Agreed. I expected 4 minutes of credits or to want it to end early, but no, that was truly exceptional.

So many cool aspects to this video.
1. Like several others already mentioned I was expecting a 2-3 minute part and then lots of credits and b-sides. To put out a nine minute part is really something else.
2. The way he goes about trick and spot selection -like ollieing up onto that slanted, narrow rail/ledge thing and doing a bigspin up there. He makes rough east coast spots look fluid as well as highly cinematic.
3. I really like Mulhearn's editing style as a more subtle AWS vibe. At first I was kind of disappointed to hear that Philip Glass song since Benny Maglinao already used it in an incredibly beautiful Nike/Levis Omar ad, but it also worked really well in this edit too.
4. His style areminds me of an early 2000s skater if that makes any sense? He's just really smooth and surefooted with excellent finesse and pop. His backside 180 flips should be in the 180 flip skate conversation, I think. Also, anytime I see a line that has both a fs 360 and a 360 flip one after the other I get sparked (Jason Lee, Bobby Worrest are two).
5. Towards the end I kept thinking "ok thats a real nice ender" and then he kept going and going. He had like 12 enders.
Advertising works and I'm going to go order an Alien abduction teeshirt now. I hope Adidas puts him fully on the team.

This! Very Busenitzesque. Or is it Busenitzian? It's not just the shoes. It's the speed, the quick feet. But the shoes don't make the comparison more difficult.

the arpeggios in the brass sound a lot like 'the swan theme' from sibelius' fifth symphony. worth checking out the last movement of that if you'd like the glass piece.

Would it be better if edited down to 7 minutes or so? 5 minutes? It definitely was a choice to go ahead and have 9 minutes of high-quality footage (and it's amazing they were able to do so), but as the editor i would've agonized over wanting to make it shorter, out of wanting the best tricks to pop a bit more, and some clips feel a little superfluous

Question still remains, what would one cut from this?
I get the modern attention span aspect but I think there’s an argument to be made for not breaking up this footage. The time span on these clips is at least 2017-2021 with three different board sponsors, all the while the dude dropped multiple parts between so it’s not like he was slacking. This was a dedicated project solely filmed by Mulhern that had a very specific vision....and they killed it.

Someone made a comment in the Verso thread about cutting the first song. I thought hell no, watched it, and had to admit there was some truth to it. In this case, however, I cannot even think of single tricks to be left out. Will be interesting to see how it ages for me, but so far I feel it’s just perfect.

Didn't know much about this guy. That just blew me away. I know this is quite a weird mix of skaters but he reminded me of Cairo Foster and Tom Knox at the same time, with a bit of Westagte and Tom Krangelov in there too. All coincidently related to New Balance.

I’ve commented a few times in regards to Joey O’Brien, most recently a day or so ago on an Alien Instagram post. They responded with “October.” So, doesn’t look like we’ll have to wait too long to support this dude properly.

I talked to him via Instagram the other day. His board is in the works, he skates an 8 but said he thinks it’ll also be available in 8.25. I asked because I normally skate an 8.3 but I’ll make the 8.25 work so I can support him. I think his board was supposed to drop in October but I guess it got pushed back a little.

Him or Chima are def my favorites for SOTY. This was the part of the year. Gave me a Cross-Continental vibes, where even if he doesn't win SOTY or whatever, in 5 to 10 years it will be the most remembered part from this year.

I had similar thoughts about the ender section in [Untitled] 005. It was positioned as this final rail destruction but for some pros those are contests tricks these days. I’d have appreciated to see it end on a long line or more interesting spot. Nevertheless, love the part to bits and hope another one is around the corner.

I mean, that was literally the last trick in a Nike full-length, it's insane but it's an outlier in the general caliber of stuff that's been done there. compared to most of the other tricks that have been done on that rail, Joey's stuff is really fucking nuts. maybe I'm forgetting some stuff, but most of what I've seen on that rail has been a basic 50-50 or something like that at the end of a line.

What an incredible part! I was initially intimidated by the 10 minute run time, but this was a true breeze to watch. It was over in a jif and left me stunned. The pacing was perfect. Mulhern is a champ on that front!
The flick and speed on his backside bigspin flip was phenomenal; it’s not a trick I like to see, but he did it just right. He reminded me of Dan Pensyl at times. Must be the working man burly aesthetic.
Hoping only the best for Joey going forward.

one of my favorite things about his skating is that it feels really relatable. his skating looks like he's trying his fucking ass off at all times, it doesn't look like it comes super easily to him (not that there's anything wrong with that, we all love watching dudes who look like they were born on a skateboard too). it's just cool to see someone who's clearly just a fucking skate rat and skated every single day and pushed himself to where he is now, and it's even more impressive knowing he's been working full-time simultaneously.
the battles on the switch flip and switch front heel on that gap to steep short bank thing at a playground are gnarly af. I remember Mulhern saying in an interview that those were the tricks that took the longest and were the hardest battles in the part, and you can definitely tell why. Thing seems impossible to skate lol
def gonna watch this a million times. hope to see more from Joey soon
