What up, PALS!
It was exactly 20 year ago that skateboarding changed forever when the website for SLAP Magazine opened a public message board forum. Happy birthday SLAP Forum!
I spent a lot more time than I should have digging around the Internet Archive to gather a little history for y'all and see how things looked back in the day. This might be a long post, so get comfy...
While the exact date the SLAP Forum launched could not be determined, the oldest record that could be recovered was from July 11th, 2001. The Forum was already up and running at that time with a whopping 87 members and 42 topics in Categories like "Skate Talk" and "Brandy's Corner".
Things seemed to grow quickly. Here is one of the earliest sampling of threads I could find, from the "Website Suggestions" board:
Here is a bit of what the front page of the slapmagazine.com looked like at this time (Oct 2001):
By December of 2001, things we're rolling. The "Skate Talk" board, with multiple mods, had threads hitting plural page counts.
It is cool to see topics with themes like "Who is this kid?", "Tricks you learned today", and "Old Spitfire vids". The more things change, the more they stay the same.
By June of 2002, the Forum was up to 614 members and over 1300 topics. The color scheme had gone grey at this time, apparently.
Just for comparison (and if you haven't checked the Statistics Center on SLAP, it is fascinating (https://www.slapmagazine.com/index.php?action=stats (https://www.slapmagazine.com/index.php?action=stats))) at the time of this post I'm writing right now (and the current stats go back to 2005) there are 37640 members and 99502 topics.
And now here is how things looked in 2004:
Things start to look familiar in this 2007 screen shot (some images aren't archived, though). "Skate Talk" has turned into the "Useless Wooden Toy Banter" we know and love. "Photo/Video", "Whatever: whatevs", "Events/Classifieds", "Music" (although "from 8-Track to Ipod" is pretty dated), and "Classic SLAP" is all there.
For the next 7 or so years, the Forum is part of a well balanced SLAP website, even though the printed SLAP magazine stopped in 2008. Here are screen-shots of the website sidebar "Hot Topics from the Forum" from 2011:
At some point this may have evolved into "Forum Feeder" updates on a sidebar of other articles:
A sample of "Article Roulette" from 2013
(http://warmupzone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/SLAP_2013.png)
While it feels like the real decline of original SLAP content began with the collapse of the 2012 One In A Million season, the marked slowdown of non-forum SLAP website posts began in July of 2014. Over the next few years, there were only a handful of posts, with about a third of them related to the death of a skateboarder (Matt Reason, Jay Adams). The final SLAP front page post was on October 13, 2016, about Dylan Rieder's passing.
Sometime between September 28 - 30th, 2017, the index page of slapmagazine.com redirected straight to the Forum, thus ushering in the contemporary era.
-----
This is all just what I found digging around, but I wasn't here for most of it. Please, join in on the 20-Years-of-SLAP-Forum conversation with your fond (or loathsome) recollections of the SLAP Forum. If anybody can fill in the gaps, or correct some of my assumptions here, please do so. If anybody can convince Trippe to log back in and kick some knowledge, that would rule.
Big THANK YOU to all the Mods past present and future for volunteering their time, High Speed for keeping the Forum up and running, and everyone for contributing in one way or another.
Pour some out for the homies who focused their accounts or are no longer with us for other reasons.

we would "leak" fake info here and watch kids go to skateperception talking about my friend just told me yada yada.
or the classic "new NYC video trailer" thread with a link to a picture of a trailer on fire in BQE traffic.
was def dope when wed get real DLXSF Giant SoleTech etc catalog leaks from shop owners that didnt give a shit tho. back before you could easily see what every brand was doing for the next year and half out.
thanks for posting those real early pics and that gif with carroll and bobby. cool to see that again.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
-
I was more of a tum yeto message board guy in those times. This was cool to read through. Thanks for putting together.
-
Thanks for putting that together.
I think I started lurking here in 2006-ish. I was interning at some random company, and I sat at the back and had so much downtime.
I wonder who the longest active poster has been, and how many from the 00's are still hangin around.
-

I've been lurking since then, I remember the change over when we had to re-register on the "new" board... just checked and I've had this one since November 2005. Somedays I think I should post more and get up to Pal but I think I will forever be heavy lurker.
-
Joined this year only but damn this is super cool OP, thanks for digging these out! Happy birthday slap!
-
I missed all of this because I already had stopped skating in 2001 (about the same time Dre dropped 2001), if I imagine how much time I could have wasted here :'(
Anyway, I am glad I found these forums, it has helped me in many ways since my comeback to skating in 2020, with trick tips, gear recommendations, perseverance and motivation. Thanks Slap and happy birthday!
-
Sweet!
The crail board went down and huphtur told me that slap is a good place … must have been around 2004-2005. Everything seems blurry.
-
Thank you for the walk down memory lane.
I was left to surf the internet to keep from murdering my shipmates when I first checked aboard my ship in the summer of 2002. I discovered this place promptly after wheelbite went extinct. My first distinct memory of slap is finding out Pepe had passed away from this messageboard.
Cheers to everyone and I hope I'm still lurking here 20 years from now.
-
Amazing history, thank you

Great post @WarmUpZone. Thanks for doing the digging!
I thought I had more stuff, but these are the only forum-related images I could find on my hd. Wish I had more.

My favorite moment was winning that signed Black Label Tony Alva cruiser in 2008.

Hah rad to see those old screenshots, thanks. I must've registered my first account around 04 and have definitely wasted years of my life lurking.
-
Happy Birthday Slap
You guys still have your Grosso contest boards right?

Here’s to another 20 years of shaloming and mudslinging.

Happy 20th, SLAP Forum!
<3 XOXOXO <3

This is my second account, just tracked down my old account and it looks like I made it in April of 2007 when I was freshly 14 years old (probably after a few months of lurking). Hard to believe I've spent literally half of my life posting here, Jesus Christ.
-
awesome!
i had a good laugh when i saw my original username, ebtravis, in the first screenshot.
pretty wild to think about spending time on here 20 years ago, but cool to be aware of.
cheers to 20 years more... i can't even begin to imagine what they state of humanity will be then.
-
Happy birthday!
-
At least this forum is now safe from the Braille crew want to fuck it
-
Wow way before my time. The old layouts looked sick. I was a Skate Perception kid so I was late to the slap game.

Joined SLAP at 40. Was having a midlife skate crisis. I always skated and watched videos but felt like I was holding on to the past. I credit SLAP Msg board with helping me stay motivated by feeling part of a community.
Also, I am a bit of a technophobe and this is the only social media I take part in.
SLAP has to be the most tight-knit msg board community in the world!
-
been here in one form or another since at least 03. made some actual good friends over the years, no regrets.

I love the pitchforks one!
HBD SLAP! Thanks OP for a walk down memory lane and showing examples of previous iterations of the site.

SHALOM to all the posters past and present
-
I spent the early-to-mid 2000s on the Emerica message board as “pad.” I think I made my fist account here in 2009. I don’t want to imagine life without this place.
-
Excellent. Definitely seeing a screen name I had forgotten about on the '02 grey boards. Changing from the original white boards to the grey boards was kind of scandalous ha ha ha
I don't remember when we had to deregister, because I think there were 3 versions of the boards. Maybe not?
We didnt have a home computer, so i slapped at school but got banned from high school internet use during the first boards after a computer tech traced back my use of the boards. Got called into headmasters office to answer questions about the language used. A thread about pussy or bitches or something. I mean, we were researching/procuring stuff thru erowid/bluelight/shroomery, watching bum fights, and I get popped for the OG slap boards.
I made a few homie connects back then, some AIM peeps and stuff. Traded CDs and some other shit. We might have done a secret santa thing, or that could have been a cd trading forum i was on. I've never used much social media, so thru this its kind of wild to be able to look see what I was thinking/doing as I grew up over the past 20 years. Its a humbling reflection and a privilege to see proof in the pudding, rather than only biased memories.
TBH, if whitely is out there, thanks, man. Regardless of how cringe SLAP was/has been/is/can be, along with everything else, you ushered us into a new age of digital skateboarding life. Good looking out. Understated legend.

Gnars for life @WarmUpZone. This is awesome!
Props to all Pals and posters, past, present, and future. I came across SLAP sometime in 2010 while trying to learn as much as I could about Andrew Reynolds and a thread link came up in a Google search. Ended up being a lurker for a while until I signed up in November 2011 while procrastinating college homework. Despite its glaring faults and some shitty posters, I love this forum and have met some awesome people here.
-
Wow @WarmUpZone that was rad, haven't seen that landing page in forever! I joined in the mid 2000s, was on the skateboardcity forums for a while before lurking on here and finally posting. I recall @loophole who I knew IRL giving me the dirtiest look when I told him I was on skateboardcity instead of Slap, skating with him when he was in my neck of the woods are some of the best memories I have.
Stuff that stuck out with me were:
1) Pontoonboat - no idea who he was at the time or why his name was bought up so often
2) CotG and rawbertson - hated them in the past for posting shit but they had strong opinions and stuck to them, always respect them for that
3) Fake Fully Flared links - 2007 was fun, everyone wanted this but were rick rolled mercilessly
4) ISUCK posting on here - I believe till this day that us badgering JT to put Pete Eldridge on Mystery was successful
5) The "first" and second Slap videos - had some shitty clips on them with my boy Loophole, got to see just how amazing some of you guys are
6) Posting on here incessantly during my uni days - Slap and skateboarding helped me hold onto my fleeting youth, but I'm glad I took most of the 2010s off to try other sports and live outside skateboarding, love it as much as I did in my teens
7) The ISUCK legal battles - 17 pages documenting a fall from grace, especially riveting since I was a huge JT fanboy back in the day
8 ) Having John Cardiel read out fan question - when the magazine was still around mods would do a month pro Q&A, I submitted one shortly after the Epicly Later'd Cardiel episode, asking him which he would rather redo (Burnside drop in or 50-50 the Union Square rail in Sight Unseen), he said the rail but wanted to 5-0 it initially. Such a trip to hear my user name called out by him
Here's to 20 more years of Slap.

That was a cool thing. He answered one of my questions as well. I was hyped. There was also a cardiel haiku contest. I won one of the prizes. Autographed cardiel deck, wheels, antihero playing cards, slap/cardiel t shirt, and a grip of fireworks. Also, I think with the epicly later'd, someone was giving slap posters copies of it. Maybe i got it with the prize pack, but i rrally think there was a give-away. Except for the fireworks, I've still got all that stuff saved back at my parents home. Super cool!
There were some beasts skating here too. I remember Ali Atmaca shredding hard. Total animal.
YMHY/Greg is one of my all time least favorite posters.
Gipper could be pretty insufferable, but he had that back 5050 on the clipper, so there was respect due. Homie never had a problem talking about prostate milking either ha ha ha dude was probably a cool high school teacher.

Is @grimcity still around? @EricLogan had a great opening part too in the first video too.
I'm not sure who it was but I got send 2 Slap t-shirts, the angel logo and 1 with sanskrit-looking text. Robin from Vans mailed out a copy of Cardiel's Epicly Later'd to me with a tiny flip book. Both gifts were so rad, I'm from a tiny country in Asia and getting packages from the US blew my mind back then.

Happy 20th Birthday!
-
There was a lady who worked at Vans that was sending DVD’s of Cardiel’s Epicly Later’d to SLAP PALS. Back then it was hard to find a TV connected to the internet, so When I got the DVD I basically held watch parties with my friends.
Another notables: Meat Spin, Brooklyn Brawler, VHS copies of the television show Skate, Winter Socks
EDIT:I just realized Rocklobster already mentioned Robin from Vans
-
Happy Birthday SLAP Forum and Shalom to all the PALS and everyone who makes this board the most entertaining, knowledge filled and hilarious time of my working day.
Love ya all.

Best one I've visited for sure! Only regret is not registering years before
Cheers

COTG wow haven’t thought of that name in years. He had some great rants about being good at skateboarding.
I talk a lot of shit on this forum but most of it is in jest. This is a fun place. Weird to think how much time has gone by.

Mid-2000s Slap was wild.
Seeing Johnny Layton's junk was not what I expected on a skateboarding forum. But we also endured Todd Falcon and Doug Brown so nothing fazes me (as much).
A lot of the links are dead but this was (is?) an S-tier thread

Unfortunately that video was lost to the annuls of time. I wonder if the mods have access to the magazine archives, or who has access to the digital copies of magazines, photos and video.
OIAM was a rad concept, the first few iterations were fun. I think Randy Ploesser was an ex-poster:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDqbmG3nPHw
Lastly, not sure if this was an urban legend but Alex Chalmers (Canadian Flip rider) was the first or second member ever on here. Every member has a member number and he was supposed to be the Smitty Werbenjägermanjensen on Slap.
-
He's the first member of this version of the forum, which started in 2005 (https://www.slapmagazine.com/index.php?action=mlist;sort=registered;start=0). Not sure he was the first first member, though. On a related note, Andy Stone was maybe the first pro to post on here. Sluggo was also an early Slap pro and sent RDS videos to whoever wanted one.

Cheers to another 20. I still have a few Shalom stickers from a few years ago.

Amazing stuff! Since Slap is more message board than magazine now, who controls the digital assets like magazines, videos and videos?

@Monkey_Mcpott was kind enough to mail me some a while back, can't bear to stick them on anything.

i must have started lurking around 05 or so. maybe even earlier. registered sometime 2011. but it was around the time or some time before fully flared came out when i lurked almost daily.
i love slap, it was my favorite print mag.
happy birthday and hopefully this keeps going for 20 more years.

Damn! Happy Birthday, some of those screenshots brought me some memories, thanks for posting this OP.
I think I started lurking here on 2007-2008 and as my profile says, joined on 2011. I remember I ended here because I spent a lot of time reading the comments section in every Thrahser´s web post, before the facebook thing when everyone commented anonymous with fake names. Someone mentioned the forum or put a link there and the rest is history, still here.

Gipper could be pretty insufferable, but he had that back 5050 on the clipper, so there was respect due. Homie never had a problem talking about prostate milking either ha ha ha dude was probably a cool high school teacher.
As in the Clipper hubba? Why am I only learning of this now?!?!??!
I believe that it was the Hubba hubba.
You're correct. I just remember it being kind of a big deal because homie's jaws were always flapping and clapping, so to show up with some pretty good footage at a legendary spot was legit.
@rocklobster, that's really rad that you got stuff sent to you in SE Asia! It felt like a big deal for a kid on the east coast to get mail from the SF promised land. Can't imagine the level of stoke you experienced!!!

What made Gipper eventually focus? Didn’t he have something like 50k posts? I remember him debating/arguing with a lot of people.
he didn't focus, profile is still up. just disappeared.
Dudes still lurking, for sure. He was once named Turkey Lurkey, after all :o

@DaSk8D00D was really active around the time I got on SLAP. Definitely someone people either loved or hated, but I thought he was always entertaining. Pretty damn good on his skateboard, too. Heelflip to fakie sig was the best.

International mail was much more expensive back in the 2000s, the local skate scene was still maturing at the time and me talking about Cardiel or FUlly Flared must have been like speaking Greek to my homies.
Slap may not have been the most welcoming community, but it's our private slice of the internet that I'm proud to be part of. I love and hate that it still uses HTML and lacks modern message board functionality, but that's what makes it Slap and not r/skateboarding.
Yea, I have absolutely no problem with people liking this type skating, if you want to be gay, do you. Just don't say it's a more pure form of skateboarding, when it's the same thing. That's the only thing i have a problem with people on slap.
Came across a random CotG post from the Ricky Oyola thread.

Only started lurking in 2014 or 15, but I’ve always loved the history of anything skate related so it’s really cool to see the evolution of the site over the years. Happy 20th SLAP.

Happy birthday SLAP! Started my account in 2014? I think? Something like that.
Going back to the office tomorrow so I'll be lurking and posting a lot more.

Don’t know where I’d be in life without it :'(

as a relatively younger person compared to you guys, i never really got to experience skateboarding as a core tenet of my childhood. i only started skating when i was 15 and before that spent a lot of time on a forum for a lego game that i used to play.
now that im a full blown skater, i love the fact that slap still exists so i can pretend im a dope skater dude from the early 2000s talking with other skaters on my dial up internet connection and talk shit with yall. thank you for still being active as this forum definitely is great for someone who wants to keep social media down to a minimum while still enjoying talking to strangers.
-
I've been on since the early days...had a different handle but lost it when board changed/updated many years ago.
I think the only fellow PAL I met in person was The General. I met up with her when I went to a trade show in Montreal.

What original PALS are still on the Board?
Was GAY an original? Does anyone know why he focused or left? What's the story there?

people used to photoshop dicks on peoples pictures quite a bit... i feel like that wouldnt fly these days idk ? the forum used to be fucking savage man i think its calmed down quite a bit. some real fuck tards. i admit i kooked it hard but got damn people went ham

Also been on here since the earlyish days (2008)... but lurked more than posted, hence why im not pal status, yet have the angel logo. Happy bday Slap! We need a "where are they now?" of posters from yesteryear. Wonder what CigBeer and Tobey are up to these days.

calmed down quite a bit is an understatement! mid 00s slap most definitely wouldn't fly, at all.
those photoshop dicks were brutal. Whose signature had gipper's face photoshopped on someone getting plowed and someone else eating turds in a toilet?

I think GAY created an account around the same time as I did. And I think he's focusing on his music more. He's popped in from time to time..

Damn, good on you for tracking all that stuff down @WarmUpZone, respect. And happy anniversary to Slap. I love this place.
Used to think this place was a cesspool but would lurk it to get inside info for my blog, and then got pulled in and realized that all the sensationalist shit talk wasn't actually the majority here and that there were tons of funny and smart people. Then I found the "Whatever" section and got hooked.
Personal favourite memories are tearing apart that Bugs dude, making Faster lose his mind over his homophobia, Nick Rix flickin' them kitties, making fun of Handsome Dallas, laughing at Bipsmound's posts, and contributing and losing my mind over so many good photoshop threads. Specifically organizing The Situation photoshop thread where Officer Caruthers took the photoshop game to whole new levels.
Shout out all the pals over the year that made me laugh. Too many of you to name.

Happy birthday slap, been on and off here for years with different accounts but first joined around 2008. Some highlights for me were jayme fortune and Henry Sanchez meltdowns, some of the first stylin on you threads, getting a fully flared link before it was out, and pontoon boat posts.
-
Happy birthday Slap!!
This is probably my fav place in the internet, and I really think it’s a lot more welcoming and chilled than people from the outside make it sound. Most of the Pals are genuinely nice people that happen to also be skateboarding nerds! I learnt a shit ton of things by spending hours upon hours here, not only about skateboarding but also about life. You can’t buy that.
One highlight I cant forget was @JB being the nicest dude ever and sending me some spare apple earphones all the way from the US, for free, to me, a broke ass teenager living in Portugal, cause I wrote about mine breaking in the “things you’re not stoked about” thread. Infinite gnars!
Also, RIP 360frip and RustyBerrings. Gone but never forgotten!
Shalom to all the Pals and long live SLAP! :-*

Happy Birthday Slap.
I forgot about that @Sk.A.T.A.N . I think I had like 3 brand new pairs of those at the time, and it still only cost like $3-5 bucks to send them over. I was happy to hook you up.
I want to thank @tobey for ruining anything with Jason Bateman for me. Also, I think I found the quote, but I remember it being "Duran Duran is gay. Confirmed.", so maybe someone kept it going in another thread. Anyway, I can't hear that band without saying that in my head now.
What can be learnt from this thread:
Being a 'successful' pro skater doesn't have much to do with ability.
Don't work for 2 years for people who promised you a contract.
TK has done nothing that is on this guys level.
Brazilian ass can end your career.
Don't do drugs.
Stay in school.
Duran Duran were Gay.
RIP FRIP
RIP RUSTY

Happy Birthday SLAP! And a very special shout to @admin and our High Speed Productions overlords who did not pull the plug on this place at various points where the content or discussions were so so hairy, or even directly critical of High Speed. I hope they understand that there is a spectrum of opinions on here, not just negative ones, and there are those of us whose skating and cultural link to it are kinda of directly tied to this place. it is not replaceable and feels a million times healthier than FB or IG.
The first couple stylin on you threads made me laugh harder than I thought was possible on the internet. I miss some of the more colorful posters for sure, COTG was on here when I first started and definitely made some of the crazier posts. Definitely miss gipper. I am so damn glad @Pete is still around and posting, imma give you your roses while you still can smell em big dogg shalom to you and free max. Consistent laughs for years, a true product of these boards but also the type of twisted shit only skating and the internet combined could create. that era where the bronze 56k vid came out and the vibe on the boards is basically the dragon im tryna chase.

I got kicked out of a zero signing tuesday
please, go on...i'm intrigued.??
I started drinking around noon, signing was at 7 at a boutique style shop in a very high rent part of town, I had already been told not to drink inside the store, anyway I cut in line to tell the chief I post on slap, the look on his face when I said that was priceless, was escorted out right after that
haha, you wish that's what happened
i walked in and gave everyone fives and you started rambling about your 'bombing hills not countries' shirt and expected me to know you were talking about being a slap poster. you mumbled for a few minutes til you finally told me that you were 'mexican spaniard' with the pretense that i should be impressed. i said cool man and gave the rest of the kids high fives.
30 minutes later you started to act 'cool' again by calling everyone that in line for autographs 'nerds'. you did this about 3 times and i called you out on it and you said some more lame shit then the shop owner walked you out.
bottom line is you were drunk and acting like a dick for no damn reason except to give everyone the impression that you were cooler than them.
oh you also said "I SUCK' all loud like you were outting me or something, i agreed that you do suck.
your crashing of the signing was a miserable fail and everyone man, woman & child thought you were a kook
that's the same story just with more details
MS, a true legend!
also, super sick that this thread got chalmchalms out of the hiding.

I bring so little to offer, yet receive so much from this place. I am truly grateful for the shared wisdom, the alternative viewpoints, the goofs & laughter, the beefs & squabbles, the many, various personalities found here, and especially the camaraderie & feeling of friendliness amongst so many strangers who may have little more in common than their shared love of dorking around on our favorite toy.
Thank you SLAP; long may you wave.

Back in those beginning days we used to "meet up" in an AOL chatroom for live convo at the end of the day. I'm sure if I could log on to my AIM account it would provide a pretty good list of OGs.
In '02 Sluggo mailed out signed VHS copies of the Red Dragons video to people on the boards, he covered the cost of shipping and everything. I'm pretty sure I still have my copy, thanks again Rob!
I vaguely remember a thread wherein I think Beans and Your Mother Hates You had been freestyle rap battle typing at one another and it got heated and there were threats to meet up for a fight, so someone suggested that Knox Godoy should be there to watch the fight and illustrate it with his stick figure drawings in order to let us know how it goes.
If my brain were a hard drive I'd probably drag that last one into the recycle bin and free up some space.
For a long time the "Whatever" board used to be my favorite thing on the internet because it was a great curation of all the best stuff out there, so it was awesome if you just wanted the good shit without having to sift through all the garbage you otherwise gotta get through, but then it sort of abruptly turned into a list of "the _____ thread" topics.
Anyway, happy 20th, Slap forum

My favorite moment was winning that signed Black Label Tony Alva cruiser in 2008.
I won a signed Cardiel deck from a poetry contest but tbh don't love Cards (much respect tho) or AH so I gave it away.
A bunch of remarkable shit has gone down on here I wish there were a way to curate a best of slap MBs. It'd be a pretty giant task but maybe we could crowd source it and people could put entries in a shared document?
-
I can't believe how long I've been on these boards. I must have come across the forum around the same time that a lot of skate videos became available on YouTube, and generally re-kindled my interest in following what was happening in skating. Slap remains the only forum I've ever visited on a regular basis.
Thanks to all who have kept it alive all these years.

Little late for the 20th anniversary bash.. but I was just thinking how amazing it would be if all of Slap’s foes, or foe adjacents, banded together for a Skate Celebrity Roast of the Slap Message Board. Berra, Rog, GH, JT, etc. Just an hour of them letting their feelings about the Pals out.

Nate Jackson’s backfired attempt to out Brooklyn Brawler was some of the funniest shit at the time
That was lame. Outting him for what? Being Asian? Some people somehow thought it was funny though. BB used to skate a park I frequented, something I only pieced together after that ordeal. He was actually really good.
I think the hands-down funniest thing on here was the David Lumpkins episode. Although that was pretty unkind and juvenile as well.

Yeah somewhere in Shoes & Gear im pretty sure there was a thread of him just roasting peoples slide/grind marks. Its weird seeing some posters who focus/get banned who were here way before I was. Even seeing Gipper go was kinda crazy.

Member since 04 with 6 month hiatus in 09
gave cig beer my cellphone # in 07 and he called me drunk several times in the middle of the night.
Brooklyn brawler got robin from vans to send out the John Cardiel epicly later'd DVDs to pals and I got a copy. It was so sick. My gf at the time (current wife) and I watched it and she cried.
bipsmound was so amazingly funny
I used to try my best to stay out of mizark's way, i was not interested in getting bodied on the internet.
realizing busey and I were both from the same area and we became friends.
slap is what you make of it. Get in too deep and you'll drown, skim and pick and choose and you are going to have a great time.

I came from "skateboard rumors" around the end of '04. There was a young kid "Reed" who was like a skateboarding historian at the age of 12 here at the time.
ISUCK joining over the Albany beef (hilarious story) definitely brought a huge wave of new people in. Same with Fully Flared links.
Pals and people I've met through here:
Kilgore, Marty, Vicky, PAWL, Mark Whitely, Phelps and Tony V. Vicky and Marty put me up for a night in Philly years ago
Got to visit High Speed office before Mark left & he gave me some old mags and a couple of Cliche boards
Mizzark was wild and as well as his/her buddy YMHY. Mizzark turned out to be super cool. Child of the Ghetto, classic dude who I'm sure was a well known west coast pro.
Pontoon Boat and that gorilla character were hilarious.
There was a guy from I think British Columbia who was super smart & well respected, he focused many years ago but sent me a VHS copy of of Art Bars. Donnie Murdow? from Scotland and tonycoxhox are other memorable internationals
Perfect Cock or Perfection was the guy who had the gif of Gipper and Vegan Shawn eating shit / gettin dicked down
Definitely some wild times on AIM with pals. Trolling Corey Duffle and Jerome Rogers.
Sanch was kind of a mark on here IIRC. As was Anthony Shelter. Pretty sure Brian Brown would post on here too, defending / hyping himself
It used to be serious to get to Pal status! That was a whole separate community and came with all the links to every skate video. I recall driving nearly an hour to watch a terrible quality link of Fully Flared on someone's brand new PS3 the weekend after it was released.
Last but not least thanks to everyone who helped me when I was locked up. Can of Soup? Or Campbell's Soup sent some books, someone bought me a Thrasher sub. Rusty would send letters and photographs.
Slap really is one of the best online communities, nice to read this thread and reminisce!
-
Migrated from the SkateboarderMag message board around 2002/2003, lurked for maybe a year or 2 before registering under @methuselah (can't believe it's still active, couldn't for the life of me tell you what the password is or have access to the recovery email). Seeing all the names of past Pals really brings back a lot of memories, this place has been a constant in my life for damn close to 20 years. Hell, getting Pal status felt like I won the fucking Super Bowl at the time! While the board has changed with the times (for good or for bad), I still love this place and am thankful for the good times and people I've met along the way.
@biggums mcgee that's rad that Rusty would send you stuff while you were locked up, he used to send me stuff in the mail as well and I still have all of that stuff to this day, he was really a good guy with a big heart who suffered from something outside of his control and it was sad to see everything transpire the way it did at the time (whether it was the right decision to ban him at the time or not I cannot say). I know he's not very well liked these days but I'll give a shout out to the only other Pal I've met in real life, Shark Tits, as we had some great times skating and let's be frank here as it's no secret, doing drugs together.
