i'm too lazy to see if there is a similar thread...i know he--inevitably--comes up in some shape or form regularly in various threads...i can't imagine this thread will be a very long one, but i appreciate all that he has done/does, and this is my favorite for sure...

Steve Albini rules. One of the last events I went to before COVID lockdown as a talk he did at my wife's school. I always used to say Shellac was my favorite project of his but anymore Big Black is what ends up in rotation.

Also, this exchange was hilarious. I love dance music and think Albini's take is goofy, but it still makes me like him more.

I need to get into Rapeman, I think I listened to it the least out of all of Albini's projects.
I got to say I love Shellac and Big Black equally, but definitely love the rawness of Shellac's sound, especially with how they are live.
I wish more bands had that attitude.

Rapeman is a pretty embarrassing entry in his resume, but I have a lot of respect for Albini as a musician and an engineer. His dry wit is endlessly entertaining to me too.

^ How is Rapeman embarrassing? The dated lampooning of the gross Japanese fetish comic?
Personally, I’m a big fan of David Wm. Sims. Super nice guy and bassist for the best live band I’ve ever seen (Jesus Lizard). So Rapeman is a hit for me.
Albini has produced so many stellar projects, his no frills live band approach has yielded great results and pissed off several mainstream musicians and labels. Too many to name so here’s the list (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Albini_discography).
His innovations as a musician are nothing to sneeze at either. He knew real drummers weren’t as nearly helpful as one you could unplug and throw in a backpack. Plus, it was either him or Duane Denison who made Travis Beans “cool”. Songs about Fucking will always be in my top 5 albums.

pizza, old sport, the funny thing is, most of my old friends view Rapeman the same way, and i've often gotten shit for how much i've played it through periods growing up.
Shellac is definitely incredible to me, especially the first 7"s, and i'd be hard pressed to explain why Two Nuns and a Pack Mule does it for me to such a degree
and i know that this is ass-backwards in a lot of ways, but Big Black is the one i have explored the least...i know i need to

thanks for the link to that list--it's so long, that i only had time to go through about half of it, have to come back to it later...it's hard to grasp how much incredible music he has contributed to.
one band on the list that i forgot he worked with, is Mule, who have a strong history in and around Detroit. actually saw Mule and Shellac together back here before. it's easy to overlook Mule, and here's a couple from that album that i love

In Albini's own words the band name is "indefensible and a flippant choice" and he compared it to getting a bad youthful tattoo so I don't think I'm really speaking out of line here. He is seemingly more embarrassed about it than anybody.

You’re not out of line at all. That comic is severely embarrassing and gross, bringing its name to the Western world wasn’t the best move. At ease, the_unknown_soldier.

Rapeman isn't even the most poorly aged thing Albini has aligned himself with.
That said, I'm a fan of just about all his musical projects and I like him more as a grumpy old man than as an edgelord young man. I like highly opinionated people like Albini, even if I don't agree with the opinions at times. That billboard is a great example of that, it's such a funny way of clearing a sample in the most unnecessarily mean way possible.

well shucks, i actually hadn't seen that, and for some inexplicable reason i really didn't want it to end
"i'm doing my best"
edit: i'm curious pizza, old sport, regarding Rapeman...band name notwithstanding, do you dislike their music, because it's easy to read in your comment that the actual music doesn't factor much into your assessment?

Musically it has its moments but with Steve’s overall body of work I could take it or leave it.

i saw shellac open for the stooges in maybe like 2006 in their hometown of Chicago. They got booed off the stage and it was....really really funny.i think they enjoyed it too.

It being 2021, it’s really difficult to separate the art from the artist. I’m not saying Steve Albini gets a pass by any means, but I do think his imprint on music is fucking immense and I think deserving of a separate conversation.

I know it’s a live and a cover, but this was my introduction to albini and still one of the best covers I’ve ever heard.

Rapeman isn't even the most poorly aged thing Albini has aligned himself with.
Buyer's Market is the most horrific set of recordings that I've ever listened to.
Won't be linking that, but I will link some of my favourite Albini joints:

i’ve always been more into the engineer side of steve. i really dig the whole workman’s vibe he has with bands he records. i think the fact that he doesn’t take points on albums from a moral standpoint is a really respectable decision.

this documentary has a lot of really cool looks into the way steve works. “i’m really good at loading this tape machine. everything else - they did”

What are your thoughts on Albini's recording of "In on the Kill Taker?" You'd thing Fugazi and Albini would be a good match... alas...

yeah sounds a bit rough. i still like it though. walken's syndrome EDIT: sorry, meant public witness program is kind of cool, has a wall of sound to it and it sounds they played it faster. the vocals sound pretty shitty over the whole session.
the sessions/producers they ultimately went with just sound better imo.

I am a student of Steve but he doesn't know it. We have mutual friends irl. I've stolen or stumbled upon most of his engineering methods.
I wish more than anything to apprentice under him.
