Title: Sony AX700 + Opteka 58mm = Great Compact Setup
Post by: arewedeadyet on August 18, 2021, 09:56:01 AM
Really fun setup - fits in a small sling bag

The output is nearly identical to an HPX170 setup with the Xtreme I used to have.

I've seen a few setups on here using the Sony ax700 with a MK1 to shoot HD 4:3, but if you want to focus on shooting 16:9 and you don't want to punch in to remove all the vig, this is ideal IMO (significantly cheaper too!)

Looks sick! I would say that the microphone placement is a bit odd. Isn't that a senny stereo mic? shouldn't that be on the handle?

I keep it there when its in the bag. A bit more secure.
Move it when shooting.

Thanks for sharing I’ve been wondering what the opteka would look like on this camera as the mk1 is hard to come by. Did you have to zoom at all or crop the footage to have it look similar to the xtreme ?

I only scaled in from 100 to 109. I didn't stretch it in any way.

mic here is a good placement because if you put it on top of the handle, it gets kicked out by the skater easily.

for 16/9, MK2 and MK1 don't look so far from the xtreme when you do a side by side comparison,
but when you use them, they are far from each other, and the output is really different.

Has anyone tried the Sony ax100? Would like to know how they compare to the 700.

I love this little mic. Great sound and super compact. I don't really believe in the hype of that vx1000 re-issue mic.
If you really wanted to get things more bass-y or treble-y you can always take the time in post.

Can anyone help, I'm looking to get this setup, I have an opteka 58mm fisheye but how to I attach it to the lens as the ax700 has a Zeiss lens?

I don't own an ax700 but judging from this video and spec sheets it's a 62mm filter thread, so you'd need a 62mm-58mm step down ring and then you can mount the Opteka.

Any recommendations for where I can pick one up second hand for cheap? I've check ebay, aliexpress, amazon, marketplace and everyone seems to want to charge over $1000 for them.

Any leads would be appreciated.

I was in the market for a long time for this camera and I can say for certain you will have a hard time finding something below 1k. It's not impossible though you just have to be good about checking ebay

If you are looking for under 1000 bucks I would say go for a Sony cx900 or Sony ax100. You can find both for under a thousand bucks. I have a Sony cx900 and while the settings are a little more annoying than a Sony ax700 you can get good 1080p 60p footage. See below videos. First is my cx900 with a 37mm opteka. Next is an ax100 with a 62mm opteka. Hope this helps

Thanks man! Yeah I'm looking at the ax100 and the ax53 at the moment. The footage on the ax100 looks so good! I was hoping to get a 4k camcorder as I will be using a 58mm Opteka lens and scaling it in post

I would stay away from the ax53. I used an ax33 with an opteka and something about the stabilizer with that camera, the vig shakes a bit even when the image stabilizer is turned off. Much better off spending a little more and getting an ax100.

If anyone is looking to upgrade from an okteka with the ax700 and cant find/afford a mk1, i can highly recommend getting the nikon fc-e9. With the digital extender you hardly have to zoom through vig and it is quite a bit wider than the opteka. I think it’s a great alternative to the hpx/extreme setup.

Looks like a really cool setup! I bought one of those mke 200s for my Canon HF G26 camcorder, but I can't get any audio out of the mic. Saw a vid explaining that camcorders need battery powered mics to work https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMf4KaXDmto&t=151s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMf4KaXDmto&t=151s)

Did you have any issue getting your mic to work?

Not sure whether to replace the mic or the camera cos it works with my DSLR and iPhone.
(hopefully i've formatted this right - new to slap forum)

I figured it's easier to post in this thread then create an entire new one.  I'm also filming on the AX700 with the MK1 currently and like the camera setup, but having some difficulties when it comes to workflow process for editing.

I'm still using Mac OS El Capitan so I can run FCP7 and starting to have issues with how old the software is I think.  I can use Log/Transfer in FCP7 with the HVX and edit fine in DVCPRO codec, but for some reason cannot get the AX700 files or hard drive to work in the Log and Transfer window within final cut.

I've tried work arounds like MPEG Streamclip and a few other third party programs I found online, but nothing seems to work for setting In/Out markers on clips.  I can't even edit the raw MPEG4 file from the AX700 drive straight out of the camera in FCP7, and it doesn't open in Compressor either. I have to do a Right Click > Encode to ProRes422 currently to get it to allow for editing at all in FCP7, which leaves a lot of unnecessary footage on the clip and taking up hard drive space.  Is there a Sony import software I'm missing or something, because I did not seem to have luck with their studio I tried online also?

I'm basically getting the same results with GoPro footage also, but quicktime cannot even play GoPro files now.

Anyone else out there still on FCP7 and using an AX700 let me know if there is a secret to the workflow.  For everyone else, how is the log an transfer process when using Premiere or DaVinci on the AX700?  Do you convert the footage Codec before editing?

I really don't want to update the OS or buy a new computer with a new OS and keep this as the legacy unit.  Wondering if anyone has any special recommendations on workflow with this camera.

Thanks.

FCP7 is really old and shows its age here.
no transcode are needed with premiere pro or davinci resolve.

100% a codec issue which makes sense given FCP7 is from around 09 whereas the AX700 is from the backend of 2017 and will use newer codecs (avchd, xavc) which FCP7 wouldn't natively support. I don't know much about Mac's but this forum thread and accompanying plugin claims to have xavc importing working on FCP7:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qLvryJUJKXW3jPA--gvVwJ09-Jnko6OM/view?usp=share_link
https://fcp.co/forum/5-final-cut-pro-7-fcp7/37650-xavc-plugin-pdzk-lt2-download-is-dead-does-someone-still-have-it

That being said the majority of the other results I looked at basically boiled down to no native FCP7 support with xavc/etc codecs, so if the above doesn't work you'd have to transcode to prores etc.
