Title: Pros milking it
Post by: Kanye Omari West on September 18, 2021, 12:16:50 PM
Name names. Dudes that are no longer producing or had full careers that still have boards out. And go. Also at what point should pros be put out to pasture? Times have changed and does an active online presence, non skate content creation and following warrant still having products out in their name?

Crob, its time too move on. Hes established himself in a different way now. No hate its just a hard milk. If youre like cardiel, lance or grosso obviously thats like jordan status and you should have a board forever but crob isnt in the boat.

I love all the crail dudes but like half their camp should just go. They're the main ones that come to mind
Baker cleaned house and did what they had to do. Not sure why they can't either. Unless you're doing an Appleyard and still producing full parts being nearly 20 years and change into the game then it's time to go. Let somebody else shine.

I don’t know how crail keeps all of their older pros still around, monetarily. I feel like it would make more sense to have like, a crail alum series of 2-3 older riders that constantly rotates with every drop. That way the older less productive pros still get their name on a board out of respect, maybe more people buy then cause they’re “limited”, while not taking up tons of active roster space for young cats consistently laying it down.

I find it a bit strange if people here assume that "being a pro/having a name on the website" equals a monthly paycheck which is out of some hungry am's pocket... While there are pros that are milking their past fame, there's those whose name should always have a board on the wall and I have no issues when companies keep their family of skateboarders together whether or not they do the latest or greatest part every 6 months (Like Deluxe is a good example).

There's the marketability issue. Crail comes up every time with these topics. While there are tons of skateboarders who don't care whose Johnny Whatshisname board they are skating, there's a lot of people who get that Rick Howard or MC board off the wall, because they have been in skateboarding for over 30 years and certified legends/name recognition, thus keeping the company afloat. Same with Jeron and Chris, their 9club thing probably gives more eyes to Chocolate than the latest patch of pros.

Especially now in the age of everyones-a-pro, it's harder to get your name out there, but there's people like Breanna whose pro-board is cool enough thing that people choose that over some other company.

There's a lot of comments in that Emerica topic about "Spanky shouldn't be a pro because he doesn't skate on a pro-level", what ever that means. But Spanky is doing his own thing which a lot of people dig, is recognizable pro-skater and brings more value to the companies he rides for = is marketable.

I think if you don't like "pros milking it", vote with your wallet. Get that new-pros board next time you buy a board.

Anybody hating on Spanky is wild. Still produces and his footage is great. My main thing is "what is somebody contributing to the brand?" is all. If it's clips on IG then so be it but just establish that you're still out in the streets or on your board at some capacity to this day. If you're gonna ride for a skateboard company then at skateboard a little bit. Also in the topic it addresses other ways of contributing to a brand such as creating content like the 9 club squad does. There's more than one way to add to a brand in 2021 and having an active online presence might be controversial but still is one way of doing that. My question is is that sufficient enough to still warrant a permanent spot on a team?

Does Cooper Wilt still have a deck out?
Was confused/astounded to learn, YES, he does.
He must have some incriminating photos of Rodney executing a not-fully-wrapped impossible, or something.
I haven’t seen footage from dude in so long that I can’t remember if I had forgotten about him ever existing, or I thought he had died, THAT’s how long it’s been since he’s entered my thoughts.
Either way, that guy seems like he’s achieved National Dairy Council status.
Bravo, Mr. Wilt!

” The totality of available scientific evidence supports that intake of milk and dairy products contribute to meet nutrient recommendations, and may protect against the most prevalent chronic diseases, whereas very few adverse effects have been reported.” (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5122229/)

It’s good for you in that it has nutrients, and drinking it has no negative side effects.  If you’re going to claim something about the scientific consensus, it helps to actually check the scientific consensus.

I said he wasn't milking it. He's also not all that you say, sure he started his brand, he started it and didn't even tried to make a proper team or put out some footage to rep it, like it or not he's riding his legacy just like someone who's milking it, difference is he's went solo in using his fame instead of just taking some paychecks and not doing anything.

My take is Crail was established partly because after seeing Hensley & SLB prematurely retired on Plan B they didn't want the same fate. Sadly it seems they became the polar opposite where there is no need to be productive with cutting edge new footage and your bloard will still run just off your legacy alone.

Crail must have a tenure track or is laundering money through these guys.

There’s a vast difference between Justin Eldridge having a board and MJ not having a board.    I would still buy MJ shit because he was my favorite skater, is a top 5 skaters, and was consistently awesome for 20 something years.   A bunch fit in that category.   People like them and want to support them.    Eldridge was a blip on the radar, lasted about as long as a Scott Kane, but sponsored up smartly enough that he’s still in the industry

If MJ had decks that were pressed in the US (or Canada/Europe I suppose) I would exclusively skate his shit.  He's one of my favorites, if not my favorite.  Doesn't even matter to me if he's producing footage honestly.

If the boards sell why not?
I think Ed still having a board on toy, rick Howard on girl, Jamie Thomas on zero, Cardiel anti hero etc all makes sense because they did so much for those companies and had a lasting impact that must still move product.

Jordan hasn't played ball in decades but people still love repping his products.
If the boards sell why not?
I think Ed still having a board on toy, rick Howard on girl, Jamie Thomas on zero, Cardiel anti hero etc all makes sense because they did so much for those companies and had a lasting impact that must still move product.

Yeah maybe but I feel like companies are generally pretty quick to let people go if their boards stop selling.

If they don't wanna be accused of milking it and make 100k a year which isn't even that much they better start working like it's the 1920's.

Pros milking Ric Leonetti as a retirement plan

Crob, its time too move on. Hes established himself in a different way now. No hate its just a hard milk. If youre like cardiel, lance or grosso obviously thats like jordan status and you should have a board forever but crob isnt in the boat.

Crob having a board is just Craig milking his notoriety as a podcast host (albeit, a pretty shitty one) and social media presence. Crob would probably be the first person to tell you he's retired.

Pros should skate from M-F, 8-5, with an hour for a lunch. No pee breaks, just wait for lunch time man
And no smoke breaks or  If you want to smoke you can only take a 1/2 hour lunch leaving you with only  2- 15 minute smoke breaks

Yo, I’m selling this hella cheap.

I think Instagram has been a good outlet for a lot of joes n pros who really make the most of it, but it has also led to a lot of easy milking it in a couple of ways. Lifestyle posts to promote brands/their image or a slow, steady drip of casual, unremarkable warm up tricks at the park.

KB is the milker of the year though

Kirchart is the only one i can think of that bowed out on top and stayed out. Not even a guest board.

Crob has probably sold more boards now then he ever has…even in the height of his mediocre career. Half the pros on Santa Cruz haven’t touched a board for years.

Fuck it, if your boards sell, sell’em.

pro boards should only be for active pros that still skate and drop video parts just like a jersey for a sports club.
skate shoes on the other hand should be treated like basketball shoes that can drop any other year again just like a pair of Jordans. if it works for skating it works 3 years from now.
ive got a soft spot for some old nike sb and I think its a shame we might never see them drop again

Same.  As far as FA goes though, Gino is milking it.  I love the dude and he has one of the best styles ever.  But that Nike clip in conjunction with the Bruins was hard to watch.  I'd rather just see him get paid off of 101 reissues at this point.  Kevin Terpening is even worse though.  I really don't know what he's doing.  No really, what's he actually doing for FA or Nike nowadays?
