Title: Socks
Post by: shpongle on September 29, 2021, 03:55:42 PM
been running out of good socks. had to throw a bunch out. only got a dozen left. even some of these i should toss. i have had 1 pair of stance socks which lasted 6 years lol. (worth the money i feel) and the rest were hanes which are good for about a year or two then go bad after that. anyone else recommend good socks? are vans socks good?

I was using nothing but Active shop socks but I recently got a bunch of free smart wool socks and I can’t go back to anything else.

Vans seem to be quite tight/constricting, but I don't have dainty feet, so maybe they're pretty normal for others. I had to give mine away that I bought.
I'd recommend Volcom Vibes or True socks. They're pretty comfortable and durable. As for non-skateboarding socks, I have no idea. I haven't worn anything that wasn't Stance, DC, or Volcom in years.

I wear rainbow flip flops 95% of the time. you know what I'm talking about.

but see, my right foot is perpetually swollen/slightly larger than the left. Wearing socks with sneakers makes them too cramped most of the time.

I do buy good socks for wearing boots though. Gotta be wool. REI brand are decent, Darn Tough are good too.

Ain't cheap, but I'm rocking these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SGFHDP3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Breathable on top, heavy cushion on the ball/heel, tight around the arch (they're runner socks). They really help take up the slack on some of the iller fitting shoes (like Vans).

These are also killer: I use them for workouts and skating (summer)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G99GVPF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For slip-ons, Vans no shows.

Darn Toughs and other REI hiking socks. I’m a pretty sweaty dude and it definitely translates to sweaty feet. The lightweight wool socks help with that

yup. also, if you have an REI near you, buy em there and enjoy your lifetime of hassle free returns/exchanges for new pairs if they actual wear out.

Nike everyday socks 10 bucks for 6 pairs at the outlets whatever that % of cotton is what works for me. Anything less than whatever % those are make my feet sweat so bad

Hanes xtemp, or carhartt if youre looking for more padding.

I bought some Carhartt socks from the super market recently and they're really secure and comfy. All of my Stance socks ripped pretty quickly and all my other brands always stretch out.

I’ve been running the same Hanes black crew socks from Walmart for many years but as of recently quality seems to have taken a dip with holes forming much faster. May be time to update my sock game on some of these recommendations

I‘m a suit so I only have suit socks but they skate just fine.

Are there socks with integrated cushions/pads around and above the ankles?

Carhartt's padded socks are nice for that. Not a full blown piece of protective gear or anything, but definitely more substantial than regular socks. Socks drive me crazy since i sit in between shoe sizes, so the padding or lack thereof really affects of my shoes fit.

I'm a no socks if it's hot guy but have started wearing business style socks. if people are looking for something that feels pretty barefoot  (no extra padding, not to hot or thick) I recommend bonds cotton business socks. They are cheap but good quality I have some pairs that are a few years old now and don't annoyingly fall down but also don't leave any marks on my shins. The stitches don't fuck with my toes either.

So hard to find good socks, specifically ones that will fit the shoe I am wearing at the time without making it too baggy or too tight.
Once I’ve found the right pair, I’ll run them until they are full of holes and my wife gives me shit for wearing homeless man socks…

i really recommend wool socks for the sweaty feet folks. wool helps your body regulate temperature whether its hot or cold. i also noticed it has a natural cushioning ability.

as far as protective socks, footprint socks work pretty damn well if you just cant deal with shinners and whacks to the ankle. they were partially made of bamboo too i think? which felt a little more dry compared to cotton

Stance socks are good, the thicker ones.

Just recently got a really nice pair of adidas ones from Ross, they go super high but they are really soft and medium thickness.

Merino Wool socks are the answer. I know that darn tough and icebreaker have lifetime warranties. Depending how often you do laundry all you need are 7 pairs and you never have to buy socks again lol. Not to mention they don't hold scent at all, I've had long skates in mine and let them air out overnight and worn them the next day stank free

A good sock goes a long way. I got these Columbia ones for Xmas, these things have changed my skating I swear. And as stated before, bombas treat your feet right. I was always a cheap dollar store brand cotton sock guy before my girlfriend put me on...

If you're skating old crusties, start by going to like a TJ Maxx or Burlington and getting some quality socks for the low and see for yourself.

They make a "performance" sock for running. Might try em bc yeah, I've soaked the wool ones in the humid midwest summer more than once

Do you get them on discount/sale somewhere? The site lists the running socks for around $16 (USD) (2.2 gallons of gas... a pair.). Hella pricey.

I dont like skating those running socks. Got some Nike Multiplier socks, and they wick away sweat in a way that it feels like my feet move within the sock, within the shoe. A well made thin merino wool sock is the best.

quick socks question: so i have some socks that are black and after skating in them my whole feet are covered in black fluff/lint. why is that? these aren't even old socks i am talkinn about. i am trying to figure out what type of socks do this to avoid buying them/avoid going skating in them. anyone have similar experiences? it's kinda annoying

@somethingmustbreaknow definitely had it happen with new black cotton blend socks, but after a wash cycle they're usually all good.

@SaySo gotta jump on sales because they are so expensive, but I usually get a pair or two as gifts each year. The fuckers last forever
