Title: Recommendations for SNES and/or PlayStation 1 games
Post by: Madam, I'm Adam on October 08, 2021, 08:00:42 PM
Don't really know where exactly I'm going with this thread, but I started to replay my SNES and original PlayStation recently, and just wanted to hear any recommendations for good games to play.

I mean it's kind of a weird question because I know a lot of the best games for both systems already (Contra III, Mega Man X, FF7, Metal Gear Solid, etc.) but if there are any others that I should check out (or maybe you've got a copy for sale) then I'm down to hear them!

NFL Blitz or Parasite Eve for Playstation

Co-sign zombies ate my neighbors and I’ll add super bomberman.

Thanks, Sneak! Earthbound is really hard to find and expensive, but it must be worth it based on the hype.

I never really knew too much about Zombies Ate My Neighbors, I'll have to check it out As well as Super Bomberman, thanks coldbrew!

Parasite Eve sounds like it's really fun as well. My TV got fixed yesterday and even the repairmen saw my PlayStation and said that Parasite Eve and Twisted Metal were really fun.

Thank you! I played Parappa and UmJammer Lammy way back, those were fun! I'll check out those others for sure. I've heard Super Ghosts n Ghouls is hard to find, but it's probably worth it!

Just get one of those roms and play it on a computer.  I think it’s on that snes mini thing they made like a year or so ago.

I actually lucked into a copy back in the day at the bargain bin in funcoland for like $8 or something.  I didn’t even know what it was when I bought it, I just liked the label, and it turned out to be my favorite game ever.

@Hinna @willphansbiggestfan Thanks, dudes! I've got MGS but I haven't played/beaten it in like sixteen years so I'm hyped to play it again. Just waiting on the memory card, dual shock controller, and power cable.  I'll look into the Indiana Jones game as well!

Haha MGS was my shit back in the day, I had the guide and everything. I beat RE2 and RE3 as well, BUT never the first Resident Evil so I'm psyched on finding that one. The more I read your posts, the more I'm convinced that I need more Donkey Kong in my life!

Here are some other PS1 titles I thought of that are worthwhile to check out.

Fear effect (there is a Fear effect 2, but I never played it yet)
Cool boarders 2
Dave Mirra series (definitely has some rockin' tunes to nostalgia your brains out)
Championship motorcross featuring Ricky Charmichael (racing and freestyle)
Nightmare Creatures (there is a Nightmare Creatures 2, but I haven't played it yet)
Syphon Filter 2 (there is a Syphon Filter 3, but I haven't played it yet)
Tomb Raider series was pretty fun

I heard Dino Crisis is worth playing

I have Tekken 3, it's so good!

I also want to try out a game called Star Ocean, I remember hearing that was a solid game.

Dino Crisis, Chrono Cross, Tenchu, I've heard good things about those as well. All of these suggestions are gold!

My old roommates and I would do speed runs taking turns m, we had all played the game so many times we could just hand off to eachother and beat the game pretty quick

SNES - Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound (already mentioned but that shit is so fun), Terranigma, Breath of Fire.

All relatively hard games to find or expensive, but are so fun and have a lot of replay value.

Dude I got to the final boss of that game, didn't beat it, the next day the game had erased all my progress since it's old. I was pissed to no end. But this winter it's redemption time!

Me too, the learning curve in general in that game was awesome. Difficulty ramping up by forcing you to adapt to all the game mechanics with each new opponent just as they become muscle memory and you become addicted to the time trials mode. No wonder why the NES version at least is popular in speed running it seems like. There's a YouTube doco out there on people learning how to beat it blindfolded too.

Had a dope Indiana Jones game. If I still had my old PlayStation I’d play that. Had a grappling hook and all sorts of crafty shit. Don’t remember the exact name unfortunately
Found out today it was called Young Indiana Jones and it was for the sega genesis. Might’ve been released on other platforms but idk. There was no grappling hook, it was Indy using his whip as a rope to climb. And rewatching gameplay, it looks horrible and reminds me why I never even got close to beating the game even though it’s relatively short. So so repetitive and tedious. As a kid, it was the coolest game ever though.

Love symphony, own it and beat it but plan on playing through it again. Actually thinking of playing Dracula x on SNES bc of symphony!

I remember hearing about ehrgeiz and policenauts, should check those out. Love tekken 3, I just played it a bit using Jin for the first time in a long while. I played that one super heavy as a kid. Medal of honor, heard it was fun. I have to check out all those PS games, hell yeah.

@Hinna just beat MGS today, saved Meryl too. Brought back some good memories, I was hyped

Silent Hill is a must play game, it's the most immersive Ps1 game, I used to spend long hours chasing clues on top of feeling terrified. Gran Turismo 2 used to be my favorite by far followed by Crash Bandicoot racing.

Other fun stuff: Vagrant Story, Legacy of Cain, Vigilante 8, Valkyrie Profile, Ace Combat 2, Driver, Resident Evil 2

Definitely have to get Silent Hill, that one costs a pretty penny. Own GT2, haven't played it in so long though. Barely heard of Vagrant Story or half of the others you mentioned, thanks!

If possible Adam, try an emulator on your computer. You can really just get any game and translations of games that only came out in certain countries. I use epsxe and while configuring it can be annoying, there’s a lot of really neat things you can do with it. I’ve been really wanting to check this fan translated version out but there’s too much on my plate right now: http://youtu.be/mMs9oVMIyB4 (forgot how to link videos)

Mizzurna Falls, that's different. I never really got into or understood emulators but they're definitely being touted. I should check that out. Thank you!

This stretch in gaming is known for really good rpgs from Japan.

On SNES I would recommend Chrono Trigger, Mario RPG, and Final Fantasy 6

On PlayStation I would recommend Final Fantasy Tactics, and Vagrant Story. The were a lot of ps1 rpg bangers, but I think a lot of them aged poorly and you might’ve missed the boat on what made them special.

RE: RPGs, I own and have beat FF7 and I'm about to beat it again. I also just started FF8. Also owned and beat Legend of Legaia way back in the day.

I get what you mean about aging poorly, even FF8 does feel more geared toward teens. I was a teen when I bought it and it's a fun trip down memory lane at least (like a really long trip but still)

Super Mario World for SNES... if you like Mario 3 you'll love that too. Earthworm Jim is also top notch.

For playstation I remember loving Tenchu: stealth assassins and Metal Gear Solid... the first true stealth games. Also FF7 (you already know), and Resident Evil 2 took a lot of hours of my life

Oh man, Earthworm Jim, I really should check that one out! I think I played it once, maybe rented it from a video store? Loved EJ and Rocko's Modern Life as a kid, so for sure.

Tenchu sounds like a good one as well, it's on my list!

Thanks @rawbertson. for all the recs, yeah I looooved Bubsy as a kid, I still have the cartridge but it's not working sadly. MidEvil is one I've heard of but never played, I know you're a video game guru so your knowledge is much appreciated!

PSX - Castlevania SOTN (lost track of the number of times I've played this game)
SNES - Mega Man X & X2, Chrono Trigger, Seiken Densetsu 3 (Trials of Mana) with the English ROM patch is you're looking for a JRPG with more action and tons of replayability, Harvest Moon if you want to lose track of days and severely compromise your sleep schedule

yo for anyone who is really into Beat Em Ups... Peacekeepers on SNES is so so good + timeless. its a choose your own adventure beat em up and its pretty hard. theres a trillion endings. its much more playable than battletoads or spider man maximum carnage imo fuck them games lol so god damned hard and not in a fun way  ;D

A quick Google search or you can "take to the high seas". Probably wouldn't recommend the latter since the USA doesn't take kindly to borrowing files from a friend whose username is trustedtorrentuploader.

SNES

The Adventures of Batman & Robin
Deae Tonosama Appare Ichiban
Demon's Crest
Goof Troop
Gokujo Parodious
The King of Dragons
Majuu Ou
Metal Warriors
Pocky & Rocky
Skyblazer

PSX

Crash Team Racing
The Firemen 2: Pete & Danny
Heart of Darkness
Pu-Li-Ru-La (assuming it's a decent arcade port, only played the original)
Skullmonkeys

SNES

Demon's Crest
Goof Troop

Demon's Crest is amazing visually but the slow down is brutal at parts. And that last boss is bullshit.

Goof Troop is such a fun time, definitely highly recommended to play solo or 2 player casually. Also a great way to ruin a friendship by hoarding all the health pick ups and smashing pots on your friends head.

PSX:
Metal Gear Solid
Twisted Metal 2
Rogue Trip
Parasite Eve 1 & 2

Metal Slug loses part of its charm when you have unlimited continues, but I'm also happy to not lose $10 in 20 minutes. 3 and 6 are really unforgiving past Level 1.

Holy shit I remember earthworm Jim but I had it on the computer

Battletoads, too, holy fuck I forgot about that game

I couldn’t ever make it past the hover motorbike level

That game was pretty hard

It was sick how you could kill those tripod things and bash cunts with it’s leg

Camel Slug

Metal Slug 6 with Ralph and Clark was the best, taking the signature wackiness to the next level with the Vulcan Punch and Clark's 2nd life.

Random but, via your slow-mo, I just noticed the 360 flip in this game is actually a 360 inward heelflip. Now the form of that trick in that game always looked off, but only realizing exactly why decades later is crazy.

Grind Session is also a mandatory play on the PlayStation.

its funny becuase i knew this skater mike crook who claimed he could do the double but never had the footage. i asked him how and he wouldnt tell me. i figured it out though.  8)

there is a exploit you can use to get speed with hills in the game. basically the way it works is when you push down a hill then quickly push back up one, you wont lose any momentum. you will gain all the speed and the effects of going back up the hill will be completely ignored.

so in this case, there are 2 hills with hubbas located near the double set kinda (off to an angle a bit). you need ot make sure you are executing your first push right at the moment you drop in to the hill going down. continue pushing the entire time - immediately turn and go right back up the hill again. i believe the exact route i take is i go down the left side of the stairset and come back up the other side of it. hug the wall and then carve in right. much easier with loose trucks + if you are using scab. also note 3 flips will send you higher than a straight ollie with little to next to no time charging triangle. might be able to make a vid later if you cant get it. keep pushing the entire time right up to the set or else i think you will lose your speed.

dont think so man i juts re watched it as well looks like the first frame you can see it , you see grip tape, which would indicate to mee kickfflip way. if it was heelflip then you would see the graphic first not the grip tape.

I rewatched just to make sure and no, it really does 360 inward heelflip although I see what you mean. It's hard to tell because of how the skater's foot moves and the angle of the camera but really try and pay close attention to the way the board flips on the slow-mo without looking at clues (maybe pretend the skater doesn't exist). If you pause on the right frames in succession and imagine yourself doing the trick, you should see it.

@rawbertson. @silhouette

Looks like silhouette was correct.  In fast motion I think they look like 360 flips.  Looks sure can be deceiving.  I think they definitely look better than the 360 flips in THPS1 though.

I hope you like doing a lot of reading becaues Xenogears has hours of cut scenes chock full of religious backstory. The Gears (mecha) are cool, but the pacing really slows in disc 2 with an unskippable 30 minutes section covering 1 character's back story.

I'll still check it out! Xenogears and Star Ocean are on my list for sure.

Maximum Carnage, shit...I still own it, the red cartridge. I played it not too long ago, I could never get past like the third or fourth level. The music and graphics are cool, it's super arcade-like which is why I like it.

I've beaten Contra 3 before, such a fun game but the second last level gives me slight motion sickness with all the spinning sand traps. Definitely recommend it, me and my cousins had a lot of fun playing that game back in the day.

Pilotwings and Myst are two I'll check out. I heard about Myst way, way back and never looked into it.

Haha, my brother and I were talking yesterday about how we both have wanted to play myst since we were small children and never got around to it all this time later but I think I’m going to take a crack at it too. I’ve just been having a blast with the games I’ve been playing lately.

Oh, sick! I never knew that much about it besides the fact that it was a popular computer game. I barely played computer games aside from Mechwarrior and fucking Shareware, haha.

Rock and Roll Racing on SNES!

Amazed they put that much money into a licensed soundtrack. It's a trip to hear Highway Star playing on a SNES game!

Super Mario RPG is another gem too, you'll have to be creative and sail the high seas for a copy.

I played the hell out of Desert Strike on Sega.  I still love that game.  They have it on SNES I believe.  I played it on an emulator a couple of years back.

EDIT:

Here is some of the game play.  It really is one of those games that you need to play.  It is really satisfying saving POWs and accomplishing missions.

If anyone knows how to access Sega emulators PM me please, I'd love to play through this again!

Thanks!

8bitdo makes some solid looking ones. I've never splurged on 1 before but the SNES colorway with 2 analog sticks looks sick.

https://www.8bitdo.com/

I have two bluetooth ones I use with my rgb-pi and they work great. Not noticing any lag or latency issues but my hands get tired more quickly than with a dualshock controller.

Thanks!

These are god-tier and i back this fully. I want to get one i just dont have the cash right now. If I was a speed runner this is what i would get 100%. These for sure have no lag.

if you can find one, wired xbox 360 controller works really well with no lag and native to windows. it is my go-to but they can be hard to find these days apparently

but an XBONE controller i would think would be the exact same thing , they are just kinda expensive. but it will work with zero lag and you dont have to worry.

I would be wary of most things that are really cheap like $10-20 they will probably be laggy.

So many 3rd party controllers are modelled after the Xbox 360 controller, speaks to the success of the design. I'm using a MSI one that shares the same design just with more red trim. Wired works best for lag free, 2.4g is the next best followed by bluetooth, but the latter can be used with other mobile devices (phones / tablets) too.

But those 8bitdo ones look so good, especially in the SNES and PSX colors.

Logitech F310 is also a decent, reasonably priced wired controller.

The Switch Virtual Console has a bunch of dud SNES games but I really liked “Wild Guns”. Steampunk western shooting gallery type game.

Every 1-3 years setup the nes, SNES and PS1 for a bit (altho usually don't get long before I'm bored tho because ice played my games so many times over the last 25 years) anyway SNES: Mario Brothers all stars is a nicer version of all the original nes Mario Brothers games +you get the lost levels. I prefer the nes asthetic but the SNES control is a little easier on the hands.
All 3 donkey Kong county games. People talk shit on the third one but they are wrong it's fucking good. Most people are dumb and just shit out other people's opinions without knowing what they're talking about. I've seen people do playthrus talking shit and they literally just don't have the brain strength to figure out a game for 7 year olds. Donkey Kong games don't cheat they teach you what to do as you go there's nothing cheap.
Unirally a racing game with unicycles not many people bring this one up it's pretty fun.
Super Mario World/ Yoshi's island. These ones are good Mario games but not just quick blast thru the levels. A lot of depth.

PS1: Tony hawk's 4 is actually pretty decent. It's a lot like if they just gave you a bunch more levels for thps2. Thps3 is kinda chat.

i really don't know why people dislike dkc3. it was my favorite of the trilogy. i found the second one a bit too frustrating at times. i also liked how the fat baby ape controlled.

^ My "Thrasher: Skate and Destroy" part from a few years ago
Still in my PS3 i should hit that up again soon

Random but, via your slow-mo, I just noticed the 360 flip in this game is actually a 360 inward heelflip. Now the form of that trick in that game always looked off, but only realizing exactly why decades later is crazy.

Grind Session is also a mandatory play on the PlayStation.

dont think so man i juts re watched it as well looks like the first frame you can see it , you see grip tape, which would indicate to mee kickfflip way. if it was heelflip then you would see the graphic first not the grip tape.
[close]

I rewatched just to make sure and no, it really does 360 inward heelflip although I see what you mean. It's hard to tell because of how the skater's foot moves and the angle of the camera but really try and pay close attention to the way the board flips on the slow-mo without looking at clues (maybe pretend the skater doesn't exist). If you pause on the right frames in succession and imagine yourself doing the trick, you should see it.

Looks like silhouette was correct.  In fast motion I think they look like 360 flips.  Looks sure can be deceiving.  I think they definitely look better than the 360 flips in THPS1 though.

Has any game ever got a hardflip right? SaD does them almost like a weird Casper flip or the nollie fakie ones are just some shove it thing.

I don't know about other games, but I do know I learned nollie pressure flips as a kid because this game and the first Tony Hawk one made me believe that was what a nollie hardflip was for a few weeks. The nollie inward heelflip style ones, too - I would just assume all your board had to do was exactly the movement you described.

Oh yeah, Civ II is so good! I had it as well, think it's still floating around somewhere. My Grade 8 class also used to play the first Civ game altogether in our computer lab, fun times. Rented the first Spyro from Blockbuster as well, I remember it being fun. I'll look into the others for sure!

Dude, totally! Civ 2 is so good and such a time sink. Spyro 2 is also great, I feel like it the series kinda fell of at 3 though.
