Title: David Gonzalez
Post by: HaveFunSkateboarding on November 16, 2021, 04:15:11 PM
I was never a fan when (nothing to back up why I felt this way) he was “in his prime” and ended up SOTY. I randomly started following him on Instagram a few months ago, and I must say, I’m completely in awe at how hard he skates still, the shit he’s been putting out on Instagram, and the amount of shit he puts in there as well. Almost every day, gnarly shit. Say what you want about him, but he’s skating harder and putting out more footage (even if it’s just through social media) than a lot of other skaters from when he was coming up/in his prime. Basically, I just want other people to watch his skating and appreciate it.

I actually feel like he deserved SOTY when he got it and I feel vindicated every time he posts more skating on insta. He's definitely charging as hard as ever. Globe shouldn't have dropped him.

I'm glad daveed is getting some shine finally. He's always been gnarly and he's a nice dude from my interactions with him. We chatted a bit at agenda a few years ago and he was very kind

Yeah I’ve always been stoked on him. Kid from a tough place who is clearly a skate rat, ATV ripper, does flip tricks on tranny, all stuff I dig.

He's always sat in my head as this kind of rock and roll warrior that could never appeal to the masses- but obviously fucking rips. Not really my thing but you have to respect the skating at the very least.

He skates more and creates more footage than some entire teams put together

I’m pro Daveed all the way. Don’t care if people say he’s corny, he’s such a great character. Like a metal super villain who lives off of guitar chords, weed, and whatever energy drinks they’re sending him.

I've always been into his skating, and you have to respect someone who stays that active years later.  Plenty of dudes pile out or milk it after having half as much success as he did.

Does he still wear shoes four sizes too big?

I also think he deserved soty when he got it. It used to be about doing the most for thrasher and he went on every trip and had photos in every mag and his part came out on their website.
Other skaters had great years too but filmed videos for their sponsors and had the photos and interviews ran in other mags.

Same sentiment on Luan - hated them as the new faces of Flip during Extremely Sorry but their skateboarding has grown on me. David skates some huge stuff constantly, and Luan did that amazing Nollie Heel at BATB 12, so all is forgiven.

Notable David moments:

- saying that his favourite sport is “masturbation while watching porno” in an interview when he was a kid

- holding up a dead bird and spitting on it

- the 600K incident

- that big 5050

- kickflip into the ditch

So in conclusion, if this was a perfect world then David would ride for B bandanas.

I sincerely hope FLiP can restore itself to some semblance of its former greatness. The ad direction in the new issue of Thrasher isn’t really doing it for me personally, but we have a Large Mountain (B-How TS ref, lol) on the way to my lil shop. FLiP should be up there in the ranks with Toy and Zero, for crying out loud.

David needs a gnarly skate ad or a cover, with a big ass logo tee on to grow some new community following or something maybe. They should also get Roos the gal who 50 grinded Hollywood 16, that’s the move right there if anyone from FLiP is reading this, imho.

I think flip is still pretty much level with toy and zero. They just kinda lack a clear image both as a team and graphics wise. You know a toy machine board from a mile away. Roos sure but also Aori and Pamela Rosa. Flip should of taken them at least 3 years ago. If Roos is on enjoi flow it would prob make sense to swap over to blind. That might actually lead somewhere the team is from all over and many do comps etc

Also, my first pro board was a David Flip. White people in public would stop me and ask if it was my pro board. I couldn’t even kickflip

Was a SOTY ever so quickly forgotten about? He rules, and I appreciate that he just fucked off back to Colombia rather than sticking around California to fight for crumbs with a zillion other pros. I expect that those Rockstar checks go pretty goddamn far in Medellin, and the dude is always hitting the most beautiful and gnarly spots, so it sounds like he’s got it figured out.

Maybe he's one of the few pros who was smart about his royalty checks and contest money, and got himself setup for life back home. Still getting royalties from Rockstar and Flip to keep the lights on and pay for a nice dinner once in a while, effectively retiring while still healthy and not chewed out by the industry.

Doubt Flip would ever kick him off unless they went under.

I'd have Zero above Toy, by a distance too, but both miles ahead of Flip as 'legacy brands'.  Zero at least taps (heavily) into it's heritage, and has had an abundance of ex-riders leave for modern companies, showing that Jamie has always been decent at 'recruiting', and always had his ear to the ground. Toy Machine almost did next to nothing from 2010-2019, and as a result just fell wayward, gone from being a weirdo-outsider brand to a bubblegum brand with Sinclairs DNA all over it. Flip? They have the lights on, but nobodies home.

He does the most insane shit but I can never get behind his style. Regardless, Flip kind of fucked up by not making another full length after ES with the amount of talent they still have. It’s like after Rowley left the whole company just became a shell of itself.

I'm sceptical about how accurate this is. To really survive you have to invest your money in stuff. I don't think he retired just by not wasting money and having a couple vending machines. I think David had a pretty nice house. I suppose he could of sold that and survive for a bit.

I respect David. He skates hard, had a very rough life (he once told a story his family was going to get evicted, so he entered a contest, won and used to money to help them) and seems a nice humble guy.

Not a fan of the rockstar thing either, but fuck it - it's much more honest than some skaters who think they're smart and cult but end up being as shallow as kid's pool.

Not like Habitat, Alien, Chocolate or Girl have really maintained it either who were the biggest brands to me at that time. The brand that seems to have the longest longevity near the top is Real, and its probably because the brand lacks a dedicated image.

Heath was a top pro during the era of the biggest paychecks in skate history. I'm sure he was getting at least six-figures yearly from his shoe, deck sales and other endorsements. Some simple investments, maybe buying a house during the crash in 08-09, and you could definitely live that "FIRE" sort of lifestyle.

Agree. So crazy if you think about it though, imagine telling that to someone 10-15 years ago. That 3 of the top board companies were all just kinda mediocre now, almost b tier.

Not like Habitat, Alien, Chocolate or Girl have really maintained it either who were the biggest brands to me at that time. The brand that seems to have the longest longevity near the top is Real, and its probably because the brand lacks a dedicated image.

Real, like Anti-Hero, benefits hugely from being a DLX brand, run by the biggest players in the entire industry.

Are we back to cancelling this man?
[close]

Nah, I back him 1000%. I just can’t believe how cranked down his trucks are. Looks like the bushings on the one truck are like, exploded/cracked. For the skating he does, I find it hard to believe how tight those trucks have to be.

Yes, it is Strange. He skates bowls regularly too. How does he do it? The bushings must be Uber soft

He was dating Shane Cross’s sister for quite some time right? 600k incident is fucking hilarious. He might look like he works at Hot Topic but it’s undeniable he rips.

Yeah he did, I remember my friend told me he met her via MySpace and regularly chatted with her and did some  skype with her sometimes and Daveed was kinda jealous he sometimes pop in in during the call..

He rips for sure, as a few people said here I fell the same with the rock/throwing the horns every single minute, kinda played, but skatewise he's a legend in my book.

Also, kinda off topic, I dont follow him on IG, so I don't know his relationship status, but I remember he had some hot GF, def have good taste.

Daveed and Gurney should start a cheese metal company together called Battle Axes of boards with airbrushed Conan/Heavy Metal magazine graphics.

Who else is metal enough to be in the team?

Just noticed that Rihanna follows him on Instagram. That's a lifestyle hammer in my book

While everyone is bitching that he loves rock n roll he's out there doing crazy shit on a board while Rihanna watches. I for one am not a player hater. Go daveed!

The metal vert ramp he skates regularly is fucked. He posted a clip in his story today. So sketchy looking to me (someone who can’t skate transition for the life of me). Super tall, skinny, metal vert ramp…and he skates it’s like it’s a mini ramp.

Are you aware that Gurney is on Blood Wizard? It would be way easier to just take David in.

Cucktard is correct: he’s of the Wiz for a minute now.
Apparently Jerry has pioneered a new way of milking cows & has gone into the dairy business. He’s making fat stacks now.
In fact, using his techniques, he just helped me turn my $600 investment into $28,000!

Been following him on Insta too and I love the fact he still goes real hard on big spots, while being very far away from the industry, in Colombia. shit if you guys think the spots are crusty in Jersey, go to Colombia. Lots of big hills and rough-ass pavement.

I spent some time in Medellín a few years ago. The city is incredible. Awesome public transit, culture, and people but also hella skateparks. And good ones at that. I follow daveed simply because he hits all the spots I'd see riding around but didn't have the skill to do anything at. Like those bump to bar medians they have in several places. I always walked by those thinking someone could skate them. A couple years later I see a suggested post of him destroying those things and I had to follow him. He's a complete cornball but he rips and he keeps my connection to the city alive in my head. If anyone knows any other medellín rippers I'd love there @.
