I'm sure it felt really good to not only win SOTY but flex your income and fame on the less fortunate.
What's the next ad Adidas, Mark eating a 5 course meal at a refugee camp?

I'm sure they were so pissed to watch a professional skater in person

This is the city of nyc problem not marks . Tyshawn and swan used to abuse the homeless for illegal civ vids and y’all love them.

Do us all a favor and don’t watch any of the Sabotage vids.

You would think he was doing a fast plant off of one of their heads

sick blue steel rollaway
-
heard rumors of a soty trip to kensington & allegehney
def gonna be some state prop songs in the edit
-
You’d think he’d say it lacked taste to skate rails around the homeless- like backside 180s out of backside 5-0s…
-
Hey maybe they don’t have a job, but Mark’s job is getting those clips.
-
Lol good try OP

I had the strangest dream that Suciu was in a Halloween (Michael Myers) type of predicament with the actual fictional character coming after him. I got caught in the crosshairs somehow and ended up on the top of some school roof or green house or something, and was trying to help Mark get away. I might have gotten slashed, can't remember. it was wild, though! And I don't even really think about Mark Suciu much in my waking reality.
-
Homeless people should be neither heard nor seen, just relegated to some dirty Street somewhere where I don't have to see or hear them so in my mind they don't exist.
But on a more serious note, maybe Suciu and crew dealt with this as best as possible, maybe they asked if it was ok, did they want them to come back later or did they need anything and maybe the persons were like ' go for it buddy' and on that trick his board was never going anywhere near them.
-
When I saw the still photos I thought it looked pretty tacky. Like “damn bro you’re really desperate to try and get rid of that squeaky clean image huh?”
But then I saw the video clip and it looks more like the people on those stairs were enjoying the show
Now i guess I just find it surprising that the managers at adidas didn’t try to crop the photo a little closer. Guess they don’t think this is going to matter to the general public. And they’re probably right.

Also, no surprise. Bay Area liberals love pretending the homeless don’t exist
See that peninsula tunnel vision on the roll away lol

Gotta say that the guy in the walker probably had the best view of the trick out of anyone.
Wasn't too uncommon for homeless people in my city to come and watch sessions anyway, like how many options for entertainment do they really have and at least a lot of skaters will actually interact and talk to them.
-
Weak ad for suciu, that is illegal alone.
-
The only reason for him to shoot that photo is the aesthetic brought by the homeless people. Taking advantage or endangering is an overreaction, but it is corny and lame. At least do some trick worthy of an ad so it's not so obvious

What seems weird about it is it seems like such an easy trick for him on that spot. The clip looks like warmup for a harder trick. Or like they shot it and thought it was ad worthy specifically because of the lady nodding off.
-
Lol at the mugatu ass brand manager running adidas skateboarding right now

yes OP, doing a noseblunt infront of tweakers is definitely flexing income and fame

Drug problem in America could’ve been fixed decades ago if our country wasn’t so racist.
The homelessness problem won’t be fixed until we stop viewing class with this moral bell curve of rich and poor people being inherently evil but the middle class are morally just and hard working.
Not Suciu’s fault and it’s hardly his problem though, so whatever.

Using people while they literally fiend out on drugs/off reality as props or decorations for your Adidas ad to make the photo look "grittier" is perfectly fine. If anything he did them a favor, where else would they get this kind of coverage.

Yeah nah. I'm the first to enjoy a decent cancel sesh but this is merely questionable marketing decisions on adidas' behalf and a really whack attempt from Mark to get some beatnik street cred. Not sure why we're expecting anything else from a lit grad wearing white hoodies with offset blue pockets and hood in 2021.

Y’all would be super pissed if it came out Suciu or some Adidas rep swept them off the stoop so instead they just shot it raw and the man looks hyped with the front stair seat.

Fuck this thread regardless, but we all know KB is the real peoples choice SOTY anyways. Choochoo train can keep on making Venn diagrams and trying to guess the number of jelly beans in a jar.

I’d like to think that shortly afterwards Mark turned to one of the men sitting down and said “Here, have a dollar. In fact, naw brother man, here have two. Two dollars means a snack for me, but it means a big deal to you.”

Everything I’ve seen from him so far leads me to believe Marky Boy is sincere, self aware, and well-intentioned, so I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt here. Bad thread.

The title of this thread seems extreme and exaggerated. You have no proof Mark Suciu is enjoying the wealth inequality on display.

Hi Mikey!
-
Homeless people are a part of skating in a major city sometimes. This is reaching hard.
-
Not really tasteful, mark sucuk! Reminds someway me of this homeless heroin chic adverts some fashion labels did or still do.
I really wish people would be more respectful towards homeless people. This ad somehow isn't really.
Also, mark seems to me as educated and well read. He could've written something about this situation in his IG post to make things clear. But now people are speculating if he asked them to go away or even paid them. Kinda ignorant imo.

There are projects, and folks who look like that in all 5 boroughs of New York City. Everywhere is "near the projects" to people who are frightened by brown faces and think a busy area of lower Manhattan is hood. There are people who look like that sitting around outside most hospitals in the city.
Homeless people are still people and probably wouldn't agree to having their faces plastered all over the internet and print media if they had a say in the matter (which we know they don't). But who cares what the homeless, voiceless, faceless nobodies of the city think, they only exist when we need background points in photos shot by grown men who dress like 12 year olds on their way to Sunday school.
-
Black people have been underrepresented in the skate industry for so long, we finally get some extra shine and white people still mad
-
Imagine if it was just a fs feeble instead. What a peasant!
-
you people are cunts just trying to get anyone in any trouble possible ;D
-
so you're assuming those people are homeless?
-
People here were ok with Austin Kanfoush kickflipping over a homeless person because he works construction and supports his family.
Maybe Suciu can get a job sledgehammering concrete and knock up a book betty and people will forgive him for skating next to homeless folk.
-
And this is why were punished from giving medals, people like you who think a comparison is only a direct comparison & not a personal trait

On second thought I think the negative response he's getting is actually justified. I mean we can assume to mark's benefit that those two people actually did get paid model release buyouts for appearing in a commercial, which would be the proper and legal way. But from the fact that he's been silent to a multitude of people asking him this exact question on his insta, some with over 100 likes, plus the way things usually are done in the industry, it is the much safer bet that they didn't. And that makes it especially exploitative.
Plus I think we simply have to take into account who this is coming from. People need to stand up to the image they craft of themselves in the public eye and Mark Suciu is no GX1000 roughboy. Cf. this:

The fact that Suciu didn't take into account how this would be received and didn't see any need for some detailed bts info that makes it all less cringe is a baffling lapse of judgement and he deserves to have it shoved in his face. I think we all know this isn't the type of thing he'll lose sponsors over or anything. But a bit of blowback seems in order.

Impoverished humanity has been an acceptable background prop for enlightened skaters since Kenny Reed first trekked to Bangladesh back in the 90s, I don't know what y'all complaining about. Can we talk about how Berra is sitting on a stanceless genetic code that will change the industry forever?
-
The real crime here in not the ad or Suciu's response to it; it's that Twitter-brain is now infecting all levels of the skate community, including Slap. Unfortunately there is no treatment at present, and the condition is terminal.

Am I trippin or was Kalis mad at him that he shot an ad of a back nose blunt on a Jersey barrier and when asked about it Mark said something to the effect he got the idea because a back nose blunt was an easy, yet difficult looking trick to shoot?
I only mention this bc it struck me that the people on the steps weren’t incidental to the shot, but the reason for the shot.

Mark: “Hey we are going to skate this and try to shoot an ad is that OK?”
People: “Ya that’s fine we aren’t moving tho we were here first.”

How tf is this a thing? So there’s two “allegedly” homeless people in the background of the photo. There’s tons of pedestrians in skate photos and videos all the time. That was actually a really great photo.
There’s homeless people everywhere.. would you rather have them be invisible?….maybe they just wanted to watch. Did that photo really hurt your feelings that bad?
Skating needs to die again and just start from scratch. Softest generation.

I doubt any of the karens on slap are making any effort to solve the blight of homelessness. As street skaters you interact with people from all walks of life, is it really exploitation to not kick them off the stairs so you can get your skate photo? what happened to co-exisitence?

I think you might be overestimating the reach of Slap. There were comments about it on the IG and some of the losers on "#skatetwitter" were weighing in. This place isn't the whole world of skateboarding and skateboard commentary.
That said, it's completely obvious that there are a lot of people who seem very eager to drag down Suciu, so a boilerplate photo which could have appeared at any time during the past ~30 years becomes the flimsiest pretext for a lot of performative outrage from terminally online skate dorks.
-
Y'all are goddamn hypocrites for arguing the 'Street angle', as if running into all kinds of people during a skate sesh is the same as making them the front row reason why your photo becomes an ad for a multibillion corporate giant. The only reason this forum is relevant are the people who made Slap an actual correctional institution in the industry that can check people for shitty behaviour. Literally no one in this thread is acting like this is on a level with Nyjah allegations etc. but Suciu, as much as I love him, deserved a slap on the wrist for this and IMO he deserves another one for just taking down his post instead of giving an honest reaction. Further cements the assumption he didn't get those people paid and might just be an entitled little whiteboy litbro instead of the considerate polymath whe wanted him to be.
Honestly judging from who is taking which angle on here, big positive rep looks like an honour badge for conservative downplaying condescending anti-progress clowns. Kinda like the 40+ guy at the park with a Chocolate board and a Dime beanie who does 5 K-grinds, 2 Nose Manuals and 6 Nollie Flips, barking and eye rolling at every kid getting in his way, then sits down to roll up and enshroud himself in a weed cloud from which emanates a steady murmur of how skateboarding once was real and street and blabla but somehow you always run into him at the park and never at the actual street spots.

You know people are good people when they tell you about the good things they do and how good of a person they are.
“Hey I caught you in this photo and I feel bad for you; Here’s some money.”
(this one does seems like they tried fitting them into the photo)
Maybe just give money to homeless people anyways if you have some extra?
Maybe sit and talk to them like they’re HUMANS?(and you don’t need to film it)
Also, do we know they’re homeless or is this just based off of appearance?
-
From the ad angle you can clearly see Mark's knowingly putting himself closer than 6 ft from these folks by grinding the rail. WTF Mark? No masks on anyone either? Cancel the lot of 'em!

The only honourable thing left for Mark to do now is to give up his SOTY award and try again this year.

This feels like such false outrage for the sake of it. As a leftist, leftist and liberals are the most annoying people.
Skate ads have always included the setting and people around them to show skating is part of the city’s environment. The people in the pic should be compensated, who’s to say how much, but I doubt those people really give a shit either way.
This reminds me when everyone shit their pants about Tyshawn and that guy just to find out they were homies.

Also, do we know they’re homeless or is this just based off of appearance?
the social workers in this thread have also somehow determined that they are "drug addicts" "nodding out" "in the projects"

Exactly. No one really cares, they're not actually angry, and if they are, they are angry at themselves. Everyone is just eager to take Suciu down a peg, and people have a good angle here because he's a wealthy white kid and they assume any black person in a public space is homeless.
-
Everyone should just chill - Adidas plants a staircase for every pair of Suciu's purchased.
-
Slap on fake outrage as usual.

its an add for skate shoes, and that trick puts the shoe right in prime view. The photo for the ad thats in the mag, you cant see the guys face, so legally speaking i dont think he needs to be paid for that. Giving them some cash from their pockets to help out would have been cool, but who says they didnt do that, we dont know. the day rate for a movie extra is $100-200 so paying him 1k for being in the shot sounds ridiculous to me.

Not sure what’s more fun taking apart someone’s hot take or piling on a SOTY…..
Questioning skaters relationships with vulnerable people is not a bad thing……we don’t necessarily have the best track record….

Who has a picture of the ad as it ran in mags and on company social media channels? Are either person's face in the ad? If so $1K for print buyouts would be on the low side.

What if this is all being coordinated by Adidas as part of Mark’s new storyline as a heel? Think about that.

In the deleted video it was clear that the woman sitting on the stairs was rocking back and forth while clutching herself. Maybe it was something drug related, maybe some kind of panic Attack. She definitely needed some at this point. The decision to film a trick next to her was really bad taste.
Yeah, skateboarding is edgy and from the streets, especially adidas and mark, but have some respect and don't act like portraying social issues in this way is helping anyhow.

Honestly I wasnt expecting something like this from mark. Also deleting this post for damage control instead of addressing it is not the right way of handling this in my opinion. Having an IG account posting all the books you read doesn't make you smart

How tf is this a thing? So there’s two “allegedly” homeless people in the background of the photo. There’s tons of pedestrians in skate photos and videos all the time. That was actually a really great photo.

Well, he wrote some bullshit “I’m a male feminist post” type post and at least one woman found from her personal relationship experience his behind closed doors demeanor towards women didn’t quite jibe with this post - for which he apologized for (then deleted said apology when the heat died down). At this time a few other accounts came to light where he did a lot more heinous acts than emotionally abuse his partner.
Now, if you want to justify emotional abuse as “part of being in a relationship”, take a step back and look how that reflects on yourself and your life choices and see how you could do better for yourself and those who come into contact with you

I'm not remotely offended by this picture other than why Suciu is on another 8 stair. Good form though. Surprised Adidas green-lit this ad in this polarized climate. A little tone deaf. OP is either virtue signaling or trolling.
-
admittedly tone-deaf at the very least. as others have mentioned, what exactly is the message of the ad here? the trick itself isn't especially impressive; he did a back noseblunt down a much larger rail in his most recent part, as well as some back noseblunt combos (back noseblunt shuv) on equivalently sized rails, so this trick doesn't really feel significant at all. if the message isn't specifically the impressiveness of the trick and the trick is just essentially a backdrop or focal point for the rest of the environment, then we can really only assume that we're supposed to draw conclusions from the rest of what's being portrayed here and how it interacts with Mark's trick. why was this photo chosen specifically if the trick isn't that impressive? i think that's where it gets into iffy territory, because none of our options for what conclusions we're able to draw from that are very positive and most are at least a little problematic.
it's certainly not a cancellable offense but Mark and Adidas should both know better. hopefully a learning experience for everyone involved.
p.s. i'm a huge suciu fan, for anyone who thinks that people who already dislike him are taking this as an opportunity to hate. i genuinely think he and Adidas deserve a bit of pushback on this.

Kids, and some adults, are soft as fuck.
If you are offended by this you probably haven't street skated a day in your life outside of targets parking lot. I guarantee you the skater and photographer told these people what was going on, asked if they wanted to sit and watch and that was end of story, no one upset or offended. Homeless people get treated like scum, its no stretch that they were content just being treated as humans in that time frame. Hopefully they got some free shoes, tshirt, little bit of cash. To think addidas owes them a thousand dollars for being props is absurd.
Whats next? Paying royalties to property managers after a trick was filmed on premises? This is skateboarding not Hollywood.

But seriously, I lived in SF for most of my 20's and of course it's nearly impossible to skate there without being around homeless people. But I grew up in a small suburb in WA state and even there growing up skating we were constantly interacting with the homeless. I actually have always thought it's one of the cool things about skateboarding - most people completely ignore (or try to) the homeless population but as skaters you get to see the reality of that world and over the years we had lots of regulars at various spots that we knew and would "hang out" with while we skated. If anything it was a great way to develop understanding and empathy as a young teenager. I seriously don't understand the pearl clutching about this.
-
back in vegas we used to interact w/ the homeless a lot in the early 00s. couple of my buddies took it a little further and started getting the guys rooms, buying em booze and such. they filmed a lot of it, bumboxing or bum gnar, some shit like that. one of the guys got pretty rich off it.

the printed ad is in the issue with Fed Gall on the cover. Its the same exact photo as the one in this thread but there is some photoshopping of a crease or folds that obscure the mans face. the woman, you cant see her full face either. so neither persons face is actually shown. Adidas knows how to cover their ass i guess. educate us; can you cite a source about the 1k print buyout, or kick some first hand knowledge? does every person in the mag that has their face shown get paid or sign some sort or release form? is the issue here that its Adidas that ran this ad and they owe because they are rich? would everyone still be bummed if this was AVE in a FA ad instead? Maybe Marks past comments about poor taste has set him up to criticized here but I feel like another skater or brand would get a pass on this.
lol to 'I dont get this ad because hes done bigger BSNBs to shove it and its only an 8 stair... Sometmes a photo is good because of the feeling it omits. not every photo has to be raising the bar of progression to be worthy of use. this photo depicts some cold weather inner city street skating, and nice looking rail, and a skater with good form. the move also puts the shoe being advertised right in view. its an ad for a shoe and not meant to be a documentation of a new achievement. I recall a really dope photo of a crooks on top of a schoolyard bench printed in the mag. not a progressive trick but the photo was vibrating with emotion and love for skateboarding. Does Mark do the production of ads? I assume he just skates in front of the lens, and other people choose what to use for ads.

As if old Anti Hero ads made any argument besides the fact that were they running these today they would deservedly get ripped to shreds for it. "This is nothing new" perfectly encapsulates this conservative argument. Yeah, it isn't new, it's fucking old. Old and dumb and a dark thing of the past.

I generally agree with your point, but brushing off what Anti-Hero was trying (keyword, and you can disagree on whether or not they succeeded) with their branding in the 90's as "ha ha bums, gnar gnar," isn't exactly accurate. If you ever get a chance to watch the Cardiel Epicly Laterd Julien talks directly about an aversion to 90's glamour culture (esp. in advertising) that sanitized a massive swath of decaying America, where homelessness and drugs and crime get glossed over for middle-class sensibilities. The approach was absolutely juvenile, and obviously more than a little corny by today's standards, but it was trying to be subversive at the time... And I'll stick by my criticism of Kanoush being a dipshit for using a homeless person as a prop for his "I'm working class!" part. A bunch of 35/40+ year old dudes running that shit now for the sole purpose of being crusty is indeed fucking tone deaf.

Hahaha never heard that one. Aversion to consumerism as an excuse to exploit homeless. I always found the black boxes over the eyes helped to dehumanize them at least.

I would wager Suciu's intentions were not at all malevolent either. Subversive might be a streeetch for a guy using Beirut for soundtrack in the 2020s but I assume it had to do with an arty type of street photography credibility which I think works fine in a mag's gallery section but is just so so misguided as an ad for a big corporation.

It's so goofy to see the "skateboarding used to be edgy" crowd defending this very obviously contrived attempt at edginess from adidas. Shit was distasteful, it having been cool when you were a teen 25 years ago doesn't mean we have to rock with it now, come on.

The ad wasn’t trying to be edgy. In fact, there was nothing unique about the ad to get this kind of response. Just a weird kind of groupthink that is very en vogue lately for people who are perpetually online and want something to feel superior about.
Skateboarding used to be the kind of hobby that fills the void this specific brand of groupthink is filling in misguided zoomers lately. No you are not going to change the world, not if you are this weak.

difference is, suciu exhibits class. if you pulled up next to fat bill at a redlight, he's not goin to give you any grey poupon. suciu always strapped w/ yuppie condiments. and he shares.
to last guy who posted, picture suciu in mid bs nosebluntslide while hungry black men sitting on the stair eye the rail. are they posed there? possibly. i'm sure suciu didn't fly around w/ them in his luggage to get foreground props. what i mean is they came w/ the spot. i can see them trying to bully marc out of the spot, perhaps resorting to 'battle rap'. what they don't know is marc suciu is a poet. battle poet. and he subdues them ot the stairs w/ his bars. after he gives them grey poupon for their gas station hot dogs.

I don’t think enough people here realize you cannot use a photo of someone for commercial purposes without them signing off on it. If this was an editorial that would be fair game, but using an image of a person for an AD is not fair game, legally speaking, and Adidas of all corporate entities should’ve known better. Is it offensive? Not to me. Should it have happened? Ehhhh anyone who isn’t lying to themselves knows this would not have been published if the people weren’t in the shot. Back noseblunt on what looks like a skatepark rail wouldn’t have been an ad 10 years ago, let alone today. It’s a cool shot in my opinion but should not have been used to promote a brand. Deleting it without comment was a bad look.
-
Not to be the word police but I think the real issue here is, shouldnt the grammatically correct title of this thread be:
"Mark Suciu is an enjoyer of enjoys blatant displays of wealth inequality and Adidas loves it him ?
-

i think you could argue the photo was for 'artistic use' and taken in a public space where nobody would have the expectancy of privacy. meaning it could qualify as non-commercial, not needing release forms for subjects in the shot. at least this was my experience editing/publishing for magazines in 2019-20.
-
serious question: how many people defending this thing thread are actually Suciu fans vs how many are more into the anti-PC anti-woke culture-war dimension of this whole controversy?
same goes on the opposite end: how many people criticizing the photos see this as a way to hate on a skater they already disliked vs how many are actually just bummed on the homeless-exploitation dimension?
i'm just curious. personally i like suciu's skating but think this photo was in kinda bad taste. didn't expect it to get taken down or turn into a 10 page thread tho. guess i'm naive.

Suciu fan, don't like the homeless exploitation angle. But I'm on the same page as you, I think it's distasteful but nobody needs to be punished over it. More than anything it's corny to see the anti-pc/woke people defend a massive corporation like this is raw real street skateboarding.

Instead of Adidas loving the display of wealth inequality, they would now love Suciu himself.

I’m on the don’t care about the people in the pic end of the spectrum. Not a Suciu fan at all. I’m a socialist. But I’m also old so that may factor into my complete lack of offense. Seen enough real problems that this doesn’t rate.

Yes, this i believe actually ought to be the correct construction
Al Davis is a rapist and Converse loves him
Gonz is an eccentric Mexican/(maybe jewish?) dude, and skateboarding loves him.
"Tony Trujillo is a woman beater and vans loves him."

Relax guys. If they hadn't wanted to be homeless, they would've just bought a house. It's their choice
I agree with this statement. mark just did them a favor by putting them in an adidas ad. Now the world knows they are homeless and helplessly addicted to drugs with no resources, but they're in an adidas ad, which contributes literally nothing to the housing issue in nyc except a photo opp for instagram 100 emoji

Even if you personally don't find this a big deal, I think we can all admit that this is probably not the best look considering most americans are one missed paycheck away from being on those steps themselves. Dumb move!
it's really a much bigger issue than suciu and it's good that this subject can be talked about openly. The last thing you want to do is continue the suffering of someone because you're an inconsiderate douchebag. being inconsiderate is the true definition of retardation, you literally aren't even thinking. regular.

not to be that guy... cause i'm not that guy.
but there are large sections of this planet, vast regions that fall under that definition.
That's what i'm saying.

Meanwhile, has the soochster 'man'ed up and said something about this?

Last I heard, he’s a regular moron, so I’m gonna guess he’s still hush-hush on the subject.

“Yes, homeless people have appeared in skateboarding coverage numerous times before. Kevin Bradley still isn’t Skater Of The Year.”

I'm calling him a moron because he uses the word regular. After talking about being inconsiderate.
If your trying to say the word moron is as harmful as person. It's not.
I'm allowed to call oppressive people regular because that's what the word actually means. people with autism for example aren't regular regardless of the stigmas douchebags continue. People who are evil are the biggest kooks in the word.
How exactly is being oppressive a form of retardation?
Hell, the term was never intended as an insult to begin with anyway.

Just because it was once used to describe mental development issues it doesn't mean we can't use it now as an insult. I mean get fucking real, you can't call people with mental issues regular, but you can't call your dumb friends regular either? This is the exact moment when virtue signalling goes full regular, like the colloquial use doesn't even have anything to do with being born slow anymore, is just another way to call people slow.

All y’all regular let’s be real. Acting like adidas made sucio recreate Biebel riding a lime scooter past a naked homeless guy getting beat up.
Have none of y’all ever skated in a downtown area? And I don’t mean downtown Hershey Pennsylvania I mean a real city.

At this one spot in DC, archives, this homeless man was masturbating in front of everyone and another just dropped loads of empty chicken wings for the pigeons. Shit got on my board.

This. All I gotta say is that I genuinely can't believe this thread's still going
-
11 pages in and people still hell bent on acting like commercial usage of a person is no different from meeting them in the streets.
Is it still exploitation when the exploited are arguing in favour?

That sounds like something a little boy would say to his teacher.
Actually, putting people in their place is what men do.
