surprised there wasn't already a thread!
being into sludge/metal/doom etc - I got into them way later than expected. I remember my first time listening to them I didn't like the vocals so I wrote them off quickly(was deep into too much crusty shit at the time lol). I have come to realize they are truly one of the best bands of all time and I am excited to slowly dig through their extensive catalog.
Also have passed up countless times to see them live over the years but I am going to see them here in a month so I am stoked. better late than never...
Houdini is my 'most listened to' and is their most popular. I dig the production. I always love this Kiss cover so much
https://youtu.be/yCOU8z0h-K8
Listened to 'stoner witch' after that. dig this album just as much as houdini
https://youtu.be/oUGcpmingqA
i am slowly going back to listen to their first couple of albums. I am excited to give bullhead a proper listen
https://youtu.be/U82sZKeqS78
some cool footage of them live at UCLA the year houdini was released. also they had Lori Black on bass at that time who is the childhood actress Shirley Temple's daughter. very random
https://youtu.be/8MRgCcYyKQk
just some general appreciation for the band and a thread to nerd out if you're a fan

If memory serves the first time I remember hearing them was in Foundation's Tentacles of Destruction video, and I remember hating the vocals.
Then I remember seeing the video for Honey Bucket on Headbanger's Ball and loved it, and have been a fan ever since. It was metal but had a tongue-in-cheekness about it that didn't take itself seriously. Hilarious that they were able to capitalize on their Nirvana connection and get a major label deal. These days I mostly just listen to Gluey Porch Treatments but I'll listen to just about anything they do.
That UCLA footage rules, especially the Pink Floyd cover.

bullhead is my favorite
boris (the opening track) is everything about the band distilled into a perfect package imo
that guitar tone on the intro is just so fucked up and ugly, not even in a scary heavy metal way, just in a dirtbag nasty way
i've always said that the melvins sound like a mean-spirited joke imitation of heavy metal. like a nasty prank an older brother would pull on the world of punk and metal. i can't quite describe it.
unfortunately that edge is kinda missing on more recent albums, buzz just cant be bothered to chase tone anymore, so it all sounds flabby imo. he's just a jaded road dog. i respect it, but 30 years as a working musician can really take a toll on a person's creativity.
whatever, the first 5 or 6 albums are basically god-tier shit

Love em, super good live; loved the Pink Floyd cover of Nile song in that live video.

One of the more influential bands in my musical history. Like alot of people, I got into them through the Nirvana connection. I downloaded Houdini and Bullhead at 14 and fell in love. I haven't cared for the albums they've put out over the last fifteen years, but I still try to go see them everytime they are in the area. I've gotten to see them 4 times now.

Incomparable and uncompromising. One of the toughest bands ever. That being said, Dale Crover is an absolute sweetheart.

Dale Crover rules…
He played drums at an eyehategod gig. Apparently they only practiced a few times together. Pretty sick considering how EHG lists the Melvins as one of their biggest influences

this band sucks and melvin is slang for a front wedgie

Thanks for the input and fun fact. You seem like you make and maintain friendships easily.

weird hill to die on but ok if you like nazis i guess

Pointing out your uncouth attitude is dying on a hill and makes me like nazis? Hilarious.
Buzz Osborne is of Jewish descent, btw.

I bought this cd in high school and Lysol was scribbled out with a marker.

That's possibly my favorite release by them. Sacrifice goes hard.

Buzz has definitely voiced some cryptoconservative talking points, but he does at least have the good sense not to go full chud, at least not publicly. It’s never been explicitly racist to my knowledge, just stuff like “anyone who doesn’t work as hard as me touring and releasing music is lazy,” ie “why don’t people pull themselves up by their bootstraps” type shit. Listen to the way he talks about various bassists he’s fired over the years and you’ll see, as well as the way he talks about people with addiction
The totenkopf is definitely bad news, and they have some other questionable shit, including album/song titles like “electroretard” and “black Santa”
I think this stuff is fully worth talking about just to keep the record straight but I also don’t think it’s fair to characterize the Melvins as a full-on nazi band.
They’re more like KISS (who Buzz is a huge fan of): Gene Simmons has some pretty offensive opinions but the music is almost completely apolitical dumb-dumb heavy rock and roll.

Melvins are not my favorite band, but they are the best band.

A classic Melvins hit, a little Melvins humor, and a Stones cover. Great combo.
-
I prefer like Upside Down Cross. Those are the homies even tho they got bonkers 80s politics.
Respect to big daddy. He’s good to our kids. I bet buzz is a similar typa 80s kook.
Keep in mind like 80s punks did not like antifa really. We was like special type of sub sub genre. Peace punks straight edge sharp.
These were negative aspects into the 90s.
-
That EHG show sounds like it was a sick one.

Thank you Melvins.

Didn't know Dale did the loud vocals on Lizzy. Made me wonder, how much of Melvins vocals are Dale? I just figured everything was Buzzo besides backing vocals, but I guess not.

Melvins are my favorite metal adjacent band, however you wanna classify them. A lot has already been said about their 80's and 90's output but I think some of their best work occurred when they temporarily combined with Big Business. (A) Senile Animal is one of their best records in my opinion, and they were an absolute juggernaut when they took that lineup on the road.

Regarding Buzz, he's a jaded libertarian contrarian. His politics kinda suck, but I'm sure we could dig through any one of our collective musical libraries and find someone worse. Likening being a fan of some 30 year old records to "dying on a Nazi hill" is intentionally obtuse and I think we all know this.

I want to know his stance on Berra's fake spots.

this video is killer. most rock bands just lose their magic terribly when filmed outdoors in blinding sunlight. they dont sound as good in an open space and they don't look as cool in daylight. but the melvins actually still bring it, at least in this era. mark of a really great live act imo
fun story: i went to a gig on the combined big business/melvins tour, but i ate too much weed and don't really remember anything from it.

Buzz (used to) routinely let(s) others take the vocals during live performances. You’ll see Dale or Steven do certain songs nowadays.
Here’s Billy Anderson doing Copache in a hotel room.

Here’s Lizzy from the same night, with vocals from both Buzz and Billy sans Dale.

I was thinking the exact same thing. They brought their dark sludgey vibe to a perfect summer day. That's impressive.
