Title: kanten russell nine club

halfway through, definitely a good listen/watch so far. i’m surprised it hasn’t been posted with all of the back stories i have heard of him over the years on here. he better explains the entire plan b situation in a way i hadn’t heard before and is an all around well-spoken guest who tells good stories that stay with the timeline and don’t trail off. definitely made me a bigger fan despite not having my favorite style growing up.

I agree. Such a great episode. Really good insight into race and skateboarding in 1980s/1990s SoCal.

I always remember the Jan 1993 Transworld cover of Kanten in that yellow t-shirt and blue jeans backside 180 sequence.

I still dress like that 29 years later...

So great to hear the story.

Haven't touched a Nine Club interview since a long time except the Jimmy Wilkins one.
At this point I am just over it, but I am contemplating giving this one a listen.

The guy could fake ollie and back 180 some big shit. As a kid i thought his name was so cool. Kanten was not a name I had heard before where I came from in Denmark.

This was a great show. Kanten is truly salt of the earth and one amazing skateboarder.

I was on a local committee to get a park built here a couple years back and Kanten was the Newline rep that met with us to finalize the design. He was a total delight to work with.

I can confirm this.  I brought my vhs copy of The Storm like a dork and he was pretty hyped to sign it.

This one was really enjoyable. I like that crob and them have really gotten out of their more formulaic interviews and have taken a cue from the bunt asking about certain tricks and stuff now. Gonna go watch all his parts as he was pretty much retired by the time I started skating.

Great dude.  Good interview.  Had an autographed Kanten Russell ripped out magazine ad that my friend got me from an Osiris demo in 7th grade.

Rarely listen to Nine Club these days but this one and the Scheckler one have been a treat.

I saw him do a one man demo on a four stair/curb launch spot and he broke like 3 decks in 30 minutes.  Big dude.

The storm was one of the first videos I ever got. Or like the first real video I got. I wanna rewatch now. I wonder if my mom has the vhs still.

The last hour is probably the best part of the interview.
Really interesting about skate parks, public space, litigation, access....
And his experiences of racial profiling as a skater of colour are powerful

Dude was my first demo, him and josh kasper in Ashland Oregon maybe 2001: I didn’t know demos were a thing and was shocked when my cousin told me and said we might get free shit. He tried nollie back heeling the entire pyramid to flat for probably an hour, I think he broke his board and never landed it. Every time he fell the commentator would say something like “oooooh I haaaate it when that happens!!!” As a kid I was cringing lol

I haven’t listened to the whole thing but something that stood out was when Jeron said “shout out josh swindell” D:
