Woof Foys opening quote is pretty rough.   As if every school spot isn’t called the name of the school

Pretty good read of those of us into skateboarding. Surprised how deep they went. Have to think the casual LA Times reader would have very little clue WTF is going on here.

Cool read. Wish they would’ve talked to a teacher or administrator at the school. Would’ve been interesting to hear from the other side

I liked this article.
But this from Rowley:
Quote
When I started to skate all kinds of rails and big gaps and harbors, I was looking for every bit of terrain to just annihilate and go after.

I'm quite sure that he said "hubbas" and a non-skater was tasked with transcribing everything.

I always wonder at what point do the owners of the school who've paid for security, built fences, put up signs and all the rest just think oh good we have a bunch of people admitting theyve trespassed on and damaged our property and they've even provided proof, time to sue.
Even more so as it's Hollywood they can probably go after anyone who's used their location in a video or ad without permission

Woof Foys opening quote is pretty rough.   As if every school spot isn’t called the name of the school

Dashawn Jordan might have the worst quote of all of them:
"I would describe it as a 16 stair."

Interesting little piece though I will finish reading it later. I should be skateboarding while it's light out and dry.

Who tf says public school 6 ledges? Nah those are abc ledges. Not every school spot is named after the school and there's tons of other spots whose name is not related to their location. Foys comment is fine.

ive read some similar pieces to this but for other sports and compared to those this felt a little dry but was still a fun read. best part was pros saying which tricks over the years stood out. haslam getting some love was great.

Mike Plumb's fs nose has always been my favourite. simple but gnarly for that spot.

Foy comes off as a Rhodes Scholar in comparison to Dashawn Jordan saying “I would describe it as a 16 stair.”

The scouse can be hard to understand.

A better counterpoint would be the school spots like Clipper thst are named after the street.  I guess no one wanted to call it the Lick Ledge

Thanks for posting this. Great reminder of how incredibly fucked Pat Duffy was back then, this is basically still in the big pants small wheels era

I'm formally requesting a slapism glossary for newbies or oldheads trying to catchup...

There are the obvious ones even if I don't know the origin like; someone of certain brand, or your typo names like Spanly.. and I'm immediately running out of examples because I am embarrassingly intoxicated and have been out of the loop for years.

For a second I almost thought maybe it isn't lost in translation and he actually means.. yeah no, at most he did 1 or 2 harbour-type water gaps in his entire career and the rest is over that concrete piss river in LA... Even then I'm probably just imagining things

It's because there's not enough free in his dome to ditch the scouser accent even after 25+ years of living in SoCal. "Harbo(u)r" and "hubba" sound virtually the same with your tongue glued to the bottom of your mouth.

Beagle: It evolves so much. Like, Andrew Reynolds being not only the first person to kickflip the 16, but also lipslide the rail. Now lipslide is just a warmup to kids. And people are doing half cab to backside Smith grinds. It helps make the evolution of skateboarding so clear.

Last sentence. This is why iconic spots matter.

El Toro High School, LA High, Sylmar High School, Wallenberg High School, UCI rails, UC Davis gap…

I’ve lived on the other side of the high school (the in n out from the Mouse intro side) for about 8 years now and am annoyed I’ve yet to pass it and see any names sessioning it.   Just usually some lookie-loo kids rolling up on the 12 but never really giving it a go.
