Apparently one of the most under-appreciated pros is starting a youtube series about getting his non-everyday-tricks on lock
Nice and short, straight to the point. I subscribed

God damn that must feel good...

Definitely subscribing. Asta is one of my favorite current skaters.

that's hilarious. i'd love to see pro's making trick tip vids for insanely difficult tricks as a flex.
'okay, so for a switch hard flip back tail big spin, it's really gonna help if you've got your switch hardflips, back tails and big spins down pretty good.'

I have never forgiven Willy Santos for his trick tips on the old Birdhouse website (circa 2001) on Quicktime player.

To be fair he mentions 1 line about kickflips that was incredibly helpful: flick of the toe makes it happen
Helps to reframe your thinking of the trick, its all toe and not karate kick
But at 144p its impossible to see what his feet are doing anyway

i feel like he's just trolling us

I mean he's tried to make it strictly through core outlets and hasn't had major success. I back him going this lane. Very awkward at times talking to the camera but thats the name of the youtube game I guess. I forgot who said it ont he bunt but someone called him out as being horribly dressed and I don't get it. Seems like an inoffensive albeit basic clothing style.

I guess depends on who and when they said it. He was a touch early with the es and cargos and would wear those crazy ankle pocket cargos. Maybe something about the Jimbo Jones hair/perma beanie is hard to see on someone over 20. I'm just guessing here

Street pros struggling on transition is something I've always wanted to see. He's actually pretty good

pretty funny he just ditched his fresh shoes after he stepped in a little dog shit haha.

I'd do the same if I got free shoes. Hell, I stepped in dogshit in a pair of New Balance 306's that still have a decent amount of life in them and I left them sitting outside since October, not wanting to deal with them...
I like the videos but always skip the awkward talking, especially in that transition video where he blathers on for 50% of the running time.
-
He'S perfectly fine at transition
Sometimes I find it weird when people criticize a lack of transition skating by people who specialize in ledge / street tech. I'm sure most pros can skate transition just fine, just not at the level of pro transition skaters so it doesn't make sense to include it in their parts. It's like how musicians can generally play other instruments, but they wont include it in their recording or shows since it's not at their standard.
-
His transition skating is arguably good. His naming of tricks is very weird however. He didn't understand that he was actually doing an ollie and not an air "switch FS air and backside air". He also didn't seem to understand the concept of alleyoop despite doing it perfectly.
-
I back this (same vlog style that Caruso dude did).
Asta is so.good.

IDK how you rate success, but Tom Asta has stayed pro for top board companies when many others have fell off. He's certainly not making bank, but I think he's a perfect example of how you can thrive as pro for a long time by with consistent skating, a good head, and humble living. And not being severely screwed by a skate brand even though he survived the fallen closure and es downsize.
Dudes been my favorite since I saw him skate in person years ago.

Seems more often than not people who don't even know what everything is called are better skateboarders

So true. When I was young, I would buy local magazines (cemporcentoskatemag and Tribo), learn trick names and so on.
A friend of mine didn't know trick names and would land them easily (some he hadn't even seen a person doing it). Goes without saying he was 100 times better than me.

Yeah, he seems pretty successful to me. Smart too, still lives in the Midwest. Skaters would save a lot be moving out of California. I get it’s the spot to be to get noticed, but once I got on I’d move somehow cheaper and only go there to hang and film shit.
I really like his channel. More pros needs to start them up. I’ll take this over John Hill and all those other annoying fake-pros.

Yeah, PA isn’t technically the Midwest. Still WAY cheaper than California.

Not sure I'd consider Philadelphia suburbs as Midwest.
Aside from that I think he could benefit from filming his clips and then doing the YouTube face to camera thing at home in more of a streaming set up. Keep his commentary on the sesh a bit more streamlined and cohesive and cut down on the editing. Overall though I do enjoy watching the process so to speak of him skating.
-
I know some people will consider Pittsburgh and far western PA the Midwest, but no one has ever called Philadelphia (or its immediate suburbs) the Midwest. This one was a first and a bit of a head scratcher.
-
Loving his content. Hopefully he can have some success with it, seems like a solid dude.
He should ask for some help with it too, I’m pretty certain there are tech savvy skaters out there who’d love to help.

kinda cool to hear him acknowledge how frustrating manuals are and that they came to him a lot later. manuals are the bane of my existence and despite being able to do (shitty) fs 5-0s and nose grinds, i can't manual to save my life.
-
he films all of these videos about 20 yards from my office. i'll try to beep if i see him filming one of these
-
wish he actually tried at filming, like for the lrg 1947 video. has nollie heel back noseblunt a rail been done since then ?

imagine being so good that when you're trying to get back into skating rails your go-to thought is a kickflip front crook.

Some good tips here, it's a shame he didn't cover more tricks like he planned.

switch heel back five first try is insane. p rod free this man from santa cruz

Is it ever sunny where TA lives? Great videos, wish they lasted longer.

I think santa cruz seems like a good brand, stable. probably insurance and such.

I'd gladly take Kook status for loving these videos. I'm old, and just in awe of how good he is at skating. It's fun watching the process.

@FatGuy92 if you're interested I think Ben Degros has a couple of videos where he goes into wheelbase, steepness of kicks, trucks brands, and how all that stuff effects your manuals
