There’s not a local scene around me for vert and bowl skating and my local park has one of the largest bowl features in NC. I think it’s a 12ft deep, 8ft shallow. It’s so large that most folks leave it alone or at most will cruise 4ft below the coping. Most of the mini ramp and quarter skating I come across doesn’t translate to the really big stuff. Or at least, I’m having a hard time connecting the differences.
What are some good channels, classic videos, and individuals to follow to get a better sense of where vert and bowl skating is, has been, and where it’s headed?

Jeff Grosso's channel 'love letters to skateboarding' was/is awesome for the history of transition skating, including some modern stuff. Idk if it'll link properly but this is the playlist to the entire series.

As far as where it's headed I think it's hard to say, it's certainly not very popular with younger skaters. It doesn't help when companies build parks that have 12/8ft bowls at a skatepark next to a 4ft mini ramp with nothing in-between.

As far as trick tips and advice kinda stuff... That "Big Al" (Al Brunelle @BigAlSkateTutorials on yotub) guy had some okay videos. He seems like your average socal douche though and is affiliated with that fried bozo Zack Dowdy so be forewarned. https://www.youtube.com/@trogarmy/ seems like a pretty chill guy and is more focused on beginner stuff but still skates big ramps and bowls.
I don't know this all might be total dogshit to you but some stuff I used to watch anyway.

Are you having issues because you're used to pivoting and doing stalls on smaller stuff vs carving into the coping and holding grinds?
I personally like Shin Sanbongi and the loose surfy style style apposed to like Oski more "technical" style.

I’m inspired by surf influenced styles, I’ll check out Sanbongi.
I think for me, it’s coping and airs fear. I can blast carves around but actually doing stuff is where I’m having a mental hangup.
I’m beginning to try fly outs and small hip airs to try to work up to it.

That place looks crazy big, but we don't have a whole lot of that sort of stuff here in AU.
To me, dudes like Omar Hassan, Peter Hewitt and as seen in that video Grant Taylor are always good to watch on big transition, with Omar doing a series of how to videos on some channel from a while ago.
There is also the "Transition help thread" here if that has anything you might deem useful:

For a long time it came down to insurance.
There were certain guidelines regarding heights of things, especially for some like Brisbane City Council, where they were not at all keen to relax the max 2m height restrictions for anything.
As to other places, some Councils weren't so restrictive, or at least some contractors made things bigger or deeper than was initially shown, just to have some bigger transition here in AU, but I think now things are getting a little more relaxed in that regard, as there have been some pretty big, deep bowls in recent years.
It is also down to how big the overall skateparks are too. Most just don't have the funds to make such a big or deep bowl, whereas they will just put in smaller everything as it costs less.
I am thinking of a couple of new places in Perth / WA, a few bowls in NSW or VIC and definitely a couple here in QLD that have topped out the max height restrictions and people are stoked, but there are still not that many.
Bar Beach in Newcastle is another one that comes to mind, but that is not that deep compared to some places.

Ah, this is a great thread. I’ll lurk this for a minute. That’s pretty wild about AU not having accessible large transition to skate, I always think of the Bondi bowl when I think of Aussie skating. That’s just one bowl though.
It’s atypical of the American south to have a park like Marsh Creek and I think that’s because this park is from the Tony Hawk skatepark foundation or at least it was when it was new. It’s a clone of transition focused Californian skateparks/Tony’s backyard flow and it definitely shows.

That’s pretty wild about AU not having accessible large transition to skate, I always think of the Bondi bowl as when I think of Aussie skating. That’s just one bowl though.
The funny thing with Bondi is it is such a small tight space, which would fit several times over in even just one of those bigger bowls in parks like your local.
Still enough to take out quite a few people over the years though - tight, painted so slippery and very unforgiving if you mess up on it.
There are some way better way bigger and more well set out bowls around, but that one for location and publicity sure has had some moments over the years.

There is an additional park area beside the single bowl there too, which a lot of people forget about, but again, it is a tight squeeze compared to other parks and places.

Working up to that level has got to be a challenge. It makes me wonder if you need to really build up the vert basics before you exit your 20s.
