Quite upsetting. De La was everything to me as a teenager. Nuts to think I was 14 when 3 Feet High and Rising came out. Completely formative for me. "Plug 2 gets all the buddy."

This one hits hard. Was really excited that their work on Tommy Boy was going to be reissued now, and I'd finally get my hands on some of my favorites on wax. Really glad I got to see them perform live once (saw them at a stacked show, and they were the standouts). Was hoping with the reissues that maybe we'd get another tour.
Sad I'll never get to them or Tribe perform live again. Also crazy to see the tributes pouring out, I saw Tony Hawk wrote a message on De La Soul's Instagram last post. Truly one of my favorite groups of all time.
-
Never have I shed tears for the death of a rapper until this. It's like I lost part of my child hood. It was sad when Phife and Guru passed but this hurts way more.
-
Seeing some great tributes on Insta. Black Thought, 9th Wonder, and Talib Kweli have had great ones.
Seems hard to find a lot of the great parts that used De La over the years on Youtube. Such as Daewon's New World Order part and Carroll's Goldfish and Finally part. Always loved how my favorite skater skated to them twice.
-
RIP Dave. De La Soul is Dead is a perennial classic.

Ain't no half steppin'!
One of my all time favorite rap songs, just doesn't get old.
Love the sample too:

Prince Paul is a straight up genius.

+1s across the board for making this a place to come and at least try to grasp the sheer scale of elation, positivity, and inspiration Dave and De La have been a source of for so many decades
have to say, i've been really digging those crazy Fe La Soul mixes i shared above, but i've forgotten how uniquely brilliant Buhloone Mindstate is too--always seemed a bit slept on to me. was hoping someone had put up "Patti Dooke" from that album, i'm not seeing it somewhere i can embed it from...maybe this...

love this one too though

Been bumping De La Soul on my way to and from work this week (listen to them fairly often, but especially this week). I love how each of their first 4 albums are uniquely great in there own ways. Personally, Stakes is High has always been my favorite but it's not like I don't have love for the other 3, and Grind Date is one of my favorite hip hop albums of the 2000s. Such a shame for a lot of fans that their music at this time isn't on the popular streaming service (I still have them downloaded and put all on to my phone into storage).
Since this is a skating forum, I'm trying to think of a rapper/rap group who has been used as much in iconic parts. De La Soul would have to be near the very top.

Still fuckin' sucks. Hardest to take since MCA passed. De Las wholesome positivity and amazing beats were such a perfect flip side to all the gangster & up tempo rap at the time, which I also loved but it all complimented each other.
Shame he didn't get to enjoy getting his rights back, but at least it happened. RIP.

amen...fucking so well put.

I haven't really watched late night tv in ages (really outside of Letterman's run down to his finale, but even before that probably since I was in high-school). But, tonight, I made sure to tune into see Jimmy Fallon with Pos and Maceo on as guests, and then performing with Roots. Two of my favorite hip-hop acts of all time working together. Really can't wait until we hopefully start seeing some re-issues on wax.

A little after Dilla's passing this dude in LA put on a live orchestra version of Dilla tunes, they did a one weekend sold out show and I was lucky to get tickets, everyone in the beat scene was there I sat a few seats from Flying lotus...had to had been around 2008
They surprised everyone by bringing out de la soul and did a 10min long version of the stakes is high...that place was on fire, seeing that reminded me of that night.

I bought the vinyl of that album that night and still haven’t opened it. That night was pretty dope, I remember chilling during the intermission with flylo and Ras G (RIP).

This is one of my top 5 de la soul tracks, remember this video as a kid was and didn't notice the shorty's shirt

Now that De La Soul has control of their music, all their albums I believe are finally on vinyl. I've been a massive fan forever. I already had Grind Date and De La Soul is Dead, but was finally able to get my hands on Stakes is High which is my personal favorite De La Soul album of all time, plus figured if I was paying a premium in shipping anyway might as well add 3 Feet High and Rising and Buhloon State of Mind which are both all time classics for me.
