Title: atiba is now part-owner of the american football house
Post by: apport on May 05, 2023, 11:34:55 AM

"Last fall we received word that 704 W High Street in Urbana might be sold soon. Shortly thereafter @americfootball, @polyvinylrecords, @chrisstrongphotography, @atibaphoto & @openhousecontemporary made a pact: we'd all buy the house together before developers could demolish it and build a condo.

Today, with sincere joy, we are excited to share that we have collectively purchased The American Football House in an effort to preserve its place and legacy within the community that built it.

Here's to keeping this landmark alive for many more years to come. 🏠"

honestly, that's a huge ass flex, hopefully i can visit before the summer ends, if i don't stay home

The Polyvinyl owner skates. They did a collab board with Girl before. Not sure exactly how he knows Atiba

they had a connection prior to this, not sure how it came to be, my guess is he was their tour photographer for a time because i saw him taking photos at a show they played here, this was in like 2016

the house didn't make the music, it's more home ownership news, but slap doesn't have a real estate section

Love this - my wife went to U of I and is in the never meant video they filmed in the house back in 09' or so - the love between Atiba and Mike is real, I share a studio space here in Chi with Bobby from Joan of Arc/Love of Everything/etc. and they're homies too. Skating got me into emo, for better or for worse so I'm here for it!

Somewhere there's an edit of me skating in a cardigan to 'honestly' in like 03' - lots of impossibles and wallies, I've always been ahead of my time. Typed between meetings, after a skate break and my afternoon adderal.

Going in halfsies on that house is probably chump change for Atiba. Now he'll get a very modest passive income as a landlord.

Super sick the house gets to stay a while longer. My roommates and I toured it in 2017 only to find the inside totally fucked with hella water damage and walls caving in :/. Maybe Atiba could fly in TJ to return the crib to it’s former glory 🙏

Saw Algernon live last fall it was wonderful. Glad to see they're playing shows again.

Also wanted to add that Atiba buying the AFB house sounds like a shitpost. Was not on my 2023 bingo card but I back it.

shout out to everyone who brought up algernon, just as important as american football to me except for riding my bike, drinking vodka and taking pictures of stars instead of adolescent makeouts

spent some very fun nights in philly at their warehouse! that was a really special time in music, I don't love a lot of 'revival' jams but they were legit. Next time listen to Ghosts and Vodka!

this is really funny to me. it's been meme'd so much that that adds to the legacy of it. pretty weird.

i love the instrumentation of american football s.t #1, but emo vocals (of all kinds)... i don't understand how anyone can stand them. i tried! nope. i respect the scene building aspect of these people, though.

atiba was at my local skatepark helping the university of oregon kids shoot some ollies over a hip. pretty cool but couldn't use that section of the park. oh well.

LoL  :D

i believe "jazz" did come from "jizz", meaning that kind of music was played in brothels. i learned that in my history of rock music class in 2006, and don't want to look up if that's true or not because i want to believe

Just listened to a couple of their songs.  For anyone curious about the band, don’t bother.  Aural torture like I can’t begin to explain.

I really wanna know what about them bothers you to the point where you gotta describe em like that. They’re basically just a depressing, catchy jazz band to me. Is it the singing? What songs did you listen to?

...is American Football what you think constitutes a jazz band?

Drumming wise, yeah. They love to play around with 5/4 and different compound time signatures. Everything else is just typical midwest emo

That's not what jazz is but ok.

I think it’s actually called “jizz” rock.

I need to look into this band.

I’m not gonna sit here and pontificate about what constitutes a jazz band. Go listen to Allan Holdsworth if you wanna be an elitist. The AF guy plays with a jazzy feel imo. Also LOL @ jizz rock

I'm not even that into American Football but some of you guys sound like you're signed in from the Footloose town.

I don't even understand this joke but still find it hilarious.

This is Jizz, according to George Lucas:
