Title: First Wall Grind (Lee Ralph story)
Post by: lurkluke on May 25, 2023, 07:34:51 PM
Any thoughts on this. Is it even possible?

Quote
. It was a tale of Lee dropping in on a mini ramp, carving the flat (backside), then grinding the same side he’d dropped in on (frontside) without hitting the opposing wall! That’s right, a first wall grind!

Quote
“Oh yeah, he always did that. It would have been a backside carve on the flat and a frontside grind on that initial wall. Yeah, he always did that. It was one of his party tricks.”

As fucked as it is, it is for sure possible. It would require crazy pumping skills though (your trucks would probably have to be very loose as well). Lee sounds like just the kind of guy who would come up with something like this and also be able to navigate transition well enough to make it possible. I think the story is probably true but I understand any skepticism due to lack of footage. Really hope to see footage of him or anyone else doing this

Definitely doable and believable that Lee Ralph was doing them regularly

John Lucero does a double frontside grind in this part. Pretty similar and insanely hard to get back up the wall into a grind

I can see it working out if someone drops in slowly on one end of the mini ramp, then immediately carves backside (the ramp would need a good amount of flatbottom) and frontside slashes the coping on the other end.

Never thought to do this before, what a clever trick. I guess that’s why he’s got a documentary about his life that’s seemingly never coming out.

Lucero doesn't get the respect he deserves for inventing the Fuckin Off style.

Sounds so crazy that I would like to try it myself. The result would be miserable though.
On a side note: Nolan Johnson did a fs carve to fs slash which looked so rad. Fs slash to fs slash?

I remember seeing this as a teen and I spent a solid hour trying it, slipped out on the flat bottom so many times before I got one. It’s feasible but I think if you had cruiser wheels it would work better. Feels a lot like surfing.

always thought Nolan johnson, jesse lindoff, Erick winkowski, ben raybourne, marcel Martinez are all in another realm of pool/ transition skateboarding of old school skating and with their own personal twist it's so fucking sick and unique.
the lee Ralph and John lucero influence is definitely there.

I'm willing to offer myself up sexually to Lee Ralph to determine whether this story is, in fact, true.

We aren't even half way though 2023 but I nominate this for post of the year.

I'm a surfer-skateboarder and did a couple of double frontside slashers on the same wall in about 2002. They were on a super-wide, 6-7ft concrete mini ramp. Didn't actually take that long to get but admittedly coming back off the bottom of a concrete ramp (vs wood like Lucero) is much easier because less slide. The first grind I pumped out of and the second, one off the bottom, I had to carry it up to the coping and more vertically because of much less speed.  Pretty fun and would have another attemp at the right place.

Lee spent time in Scotland in the late 80's and I remember hearing back then about him dropping in and carving background to grind the coping on the same side....

Add Chris Cope to your list. Seriously so criminally underrated ripper.
