Title: The coffee thread
Post by: Sony MDR V2 headphones on October 12, 2007, 07:07:58 AM
What kind of coffee do you guys drink?

Do you drink it? What do you drink it with? Do you drink it black?

I like a French roast black, and I need it to function throughout the day. I really hate lukewarm coffee.

Love the smell, but hate the taste. It always makes me bummed when I go to Starbucks with friends, and they get their fancy mocha whatevers, and I just get chocolate milk in one of those juice box looking things.

We had a "Flavia" machine at my old job.  There was like 30 different kinds of coffee, and you just pick the packet you want, put it in the machine, and 20 seconds later your coffee is ready.  It was pretty awesome.

Now that I'm poor, i just make whatever coffee is around.  Nothing beats shitty old man donut shop coffee though.

I drink it every morning since  i have to wake up at 6 in the morning for college. +cig = wide awake.

It's amazing how it could wake you up so fast.

Frenchroast black coffee, or a double espresso topped up with hot water (americano). People that buy lattes and all sorts of crap really piss me off, as they hold up the whole line with their steamed milk bullshit and make good people like myself wait forever.

whole foods brand beans. usually morning buzz, mellow flavor but with a good buzz that doesn't give a head ache too easily

i make the coffee in the best coffee invention ever

this was a wedding gift and kicks ass. you put the beans in and it grinds them up on a timer and then brews the coffee. it's really loud but in a good way that I don't mind waking up too each morning

then I pack it up for work in a cup sort of like this one that allows the morning buzz to be an all day experience

coffee stays nice and warm all day and if I find myself in some lame ass meeting where they're talking about management\marketing BS then I can just sip my coffee and zone out to some solitare on my phone.

can't do the work coffee, it's absolute shit. in college, i pretty much lived at Deidrick's coffee shop but their coffee was a bit too strong for me. used to drink the decafe. also met my wife at Cafe Artist, another coffee place I studied at in school and they probably have my favorite coffee in Houston. The brew each cup to order and you can choose from all kinds of shit.

I used to love espresso before work, but after a year, I found my hands shaking on the keyboard.

Thanks for the link, Sleazy, but I'm scared if I go into that store, I'll find Christopher Walken and my life will turn upside down and I'll start worrying about my relationship, but realizing rewinding the past isn't such a fun thing.

I feel you on the espresso BB

when i waited tables I used to make this coffee drink for me and friends before the shift that I called the eyebrow raiser. basically a glass coated with chocolate sauce and honey, a pack of brown sugar and then 3 espresso shots over ice. idea was that you'd shoot it with a straw and it'd get you going like bevis for a while. after drinking your eyebrows would raise up a few inches for a good while and that's where the name came from.

but too much jitters for me these days with espresso and the crashes are gnarly

I go to the same place every-morning,  Coffee and a Bagel.  They have a really strong and dark organic blend.  In the summer, they cold brew their own iced coffee.  Best I've ever had.

Post by: poocrusher on October 12, 2007, 10:17:30 AM
They tell me its when you use more coffee than normal and brew the coffee at a refridgerated temperature.  Lots of coffee shops use old coffee from the day before and just pour it over ice.  Therfore, diluting stale coffee.  Also when coffee is cold the flavor is stronger and burnt coffee will taste more bitter, so cold brewing insures the coffee doesn't get burnt.

I'd probably love to try that mix if I was 16. I seriously can't believe how little caffeine I can take now. Although, a double espresso short is the hot spot before a skate date.

im shamelessly addicted, i cant wake up before 2 without a coffee and a smoke. Im chilling in some basement suite for university right now where i cant keep the coffee maker beside my bed (as usual) so i make coffee, put it in a thermos, and drink it freezing cold every morning to wake up, then microwave my next cup.

without coffee i do literally nothing over the course of a day, with coffee the world is my oyster.

i've been trying to cut down lately.  usually a shot or two of espresso before class at least twice a week, depending on how tired i wake up.  on the weekends i rise around 8 or 9, get an extra hot mocha with two extra shots and hit the park for a cruise session to fully wake up.

I was content with green tea in the morning for a long time, but when I started this job I needed to drink to learn all kinds of new crap. I lasted about 2 weeks drinking the crappy coffee here before I got myself a grinder and coffee maker. If I'm going to drink it everyday I want to enjoy it. I buy various dark coffees from Trader Joes. It's like $5.00 for a big ass can of beans. I put no fat milk and honey in my coffee.

My girl got me addicted to coffee... it's bad, I drink it whenver, and I can't stop.  Anyways, we usually try to find new beans whenever we can.  It is pretty rare for a cup of coffee to really stand out to me nowadays, but....  had one singular cup at a restaurant and had to ask what the fuck i was drinking....

http://www.lacolombe.com/

Anything from them is top fucking notch.  Nizza is my favorite.  If you find yourself enough of a fan to seek out new beans, give it a try.

Coffee culture is very new here.
Instant coffee with lots of sugar rules the day.  At school that's all my
co-workers drink.  It's hideous.  We have a machine for it too...10 cents a cup.
Hideous.

I usually drink my coffee at home and drink green tea while at work.  If I need a coffee,
I have these coffee tea bag things I keep around.  They taste like diner coffee.

Back home it was all about this

(http://www.irvinefinefoods.com/graphics/kickinghorse.jpg)  Anytime I go back home I buy pounds and pounds of it.
Otherwise, I had friends that worked at JJ Bean coffee, which was nice.  Cheap diner coffee that is refiilled all day is also nice.

Here, coffee is incredibly overpriced, $12 for 200 grams.  The coffee also tends to be very low grade and completely not fresh.

I usually just buy a big bag of starbucks beans from costco...it's like $11 for a kilo and it's dark roast.  I also discoverd a hole in the wall
coffee roaster near where I live.  The dude studied coffee roasting in Japan and has wicked beans...but so pricey.  $15
/200g.
However,
it's nice to have a choice between dark and medium ethiopian, costarican, java, columbian, and brazilian.  It's also nice to have beans
that have been roasted the day before.

Plus, it's still way cheaper than if I was buying americanos at starbucks or something.

Oh yeah, some of the best coffee I ever tasted was in Vietnam.  That stuff was addictive.
Oh yeah, you guys ever hear of Coffee Luwak?  I bought a bunch from some farmers in Vietnam.
That stuff is amazing.  Apparently, it's mainly exported to Japan and the States and goes for insane
prices.  I took a half kilo back to Canada a year ago. My brother and his wife are still asking me to
go back to Vietnam just to buy some more.

Do you guys have Double Double's in the US of A?

I grew up on the canadian border, so we had timmy ho's and that was commonplace.  The concept of a double double has left many dunkin donuts employees completely lost here in boston, so I would guess it's a regional thing.

I like coffee a lot, but have a pretty weak stomach so it can end bad.  Plus, everytime I drink coffee I will guaranteed have to shit within an hour, so I use it sparingly.  Sometimes i'll get a latte or an americano because those are both less stress on the stomach, but those are also mad expensive.

Used to be an avid Dunkin Donuts coffee drinker, and I don't mind a medium cup of their delicious nectar from time to time but it doesn't do it for me since finding and drinking at a local coffee spot. It's obviously not as convenient as going to DD because it's not close to my house by any means but when I go there and get their coffee of the day, not only does it taste amazing but it still gives me the jitters as if coffee was touching my virgin lips for the first time. They have this Nicaragua coffee that absolutely kills. Recently I tried to drink Starbucks but can't make it past the taste (and yes, I know that seems like a false claim since any coffee is always going to taste bitter and somewhat harsh) but they find a way to burn their coffee and make it taste shitty. Hate their Blonde roast. I'll go with a Hazelnut Macchiato from them though.

I'll me moving there soon enough and simply cannot survive without two or three cups a day.

'good' like the kind I currently get in melbourne australia, which according to many wanky news publications is one of the best coffee/cafe cities in the world.

Mom bought herself a Keurig coffee machine a year or so ago and I have to say, it comes in handy. Fresh cup in just a few seconds. Different flavours of every taste. Different roasts. The possibilities are endless.
I usually drink a Chai latte before heading off to class. Best drink ever. Real smooth. No extra sugar needed. Tastes like cinnamon.

if you drink coffee while smoking a cigarette, you have a dirty mouth and i can't understand how you can possibly walk around with that taste in your mouth
It's fucking discusting, majority of my coworkers have brown teeth and shit breath because of this. Some try and use Dentyne ice for cover but it's no deal

When I quit drinking coffee I got migraines for 2 weeks, like the gnarliest headaches of my life.. glad it's over

Orange juice for breakfast all you need

I quit smoking over two years ago but I hated the combination of coffee and cigarettes. If you truly like to enjoy your coffee in the morning, you know damn well that the cigarette taste ruins it.  Maybe it doesn't apply to iced coffee, I wouldn't know.  But I'm absolutely baffled to hear people say "I can't have one without the other" etc...yuck.

Don't know how to use one of these but I like strong black coffee. Also, I want to fuck with some of that cold brew, so I might experiment with that.

Was watching some videos and reading some articles and dudes are talking about ratios and timers and shit, like c'mon man. Nobody's got the time for that.

This is all I ever use. The ratio/temperature/etc. can get really confusing ("cup" = 4oz?) but you learn.

My go to (I literally just finished making a cup before I logged onto SLAP)
Boil water
Grind 3 spoonfuls of the included spoon to medium coarse (you'll have to learn this too)
Fill boiling water to brim of 14-oz mug
Mix water and ground beans in press for 30 seconds with NON-METAL spoon
Sit for 3 minutes
Press and pour (will lose about 2oz to absorption, so I get a perfect 12oz to drink)

DON'T FORGET TO CLEAN AFTER USE. The cheesecloth/wheel is removable. It sucks but you don't want musty bean fragments sitting in there forever.

i have a keurig that i put my own coffee in (i stopped using the little cups because that shit gets expensive and they arent very strong). i drink one cup every morning on my way to work at about 4:30AM, it works like a charm and gets me thru my 8 hours. i've been getting coffee from my work Sprouts lately, im currently on the ethiopian and its good but i use half and half and lots of sugar anyway so... i also heard that coffee is grown with tons of pesticides so i plan on starting to buy organic once i run out of the ethiopian. i would love to get one of those fancy contraptions im seeing in here but the keurig is too convienent and quick, when you wake up at 3:30 am and have to make yourself breakfast you dont want to be foolin with long processes and whatnot.

I'd love to visit some European coffee houses.

I just love the idea of that coffee house culture. Maybe this is hyperbole, but I regard the advent of the coffee house in Europe on the same level as the reformation in terms of the impact its had on modern society. I'm talking about the worlds of art/science/finance/politics/etc colliding in these Turkish coffee houses in the great cities of western and central Europe like Vienna (or London and Amsterdam). Maybe I've been reading a little too much Neal Stephenson

but it would make a good dissertation topic now that I think about it...

Anyways, I think I'm going to buy a hand grinder and just start buying beans. Trying to get that coarser grind for my french press

I didn't put my pot under the brewer correctly last night so it didn't drip out it just sat in the brew basket for twenty minutes.  When I went to pour myself a cup at 6:30 am, it started to pour out all over.  I didn't have time to make things right.  It's nearly noon and I haven't had a proper cup of coffee today.

They really know coffee inside and out and always have great varities to choose from.

The non-metal spoon is for two reasons: 1) Obviously, metal is more likely to crack/break glass than wood or plastic. 2) Mixing something metallic in the still-brewing coffee can affect the chemical process and change the flavor.

That's fine and dandy and all, taking pride in your country's history and coffee culture. Very quaint. I'm sure, over the years, many respectable Germans have had very fine intellectual discussions over their cups of whipped cream. but actually i don't think your latin skills are that good, otherwise you must be a harvard university professor posting on a skateboard forum. If you learn latin you learn how to read old text material and how the grammar works. but actually speaking and writing it? no way.

This, My family is Austrian, I've spent a bit of time in Germany, and growing up in Melbourne means that for me, coffee is a serious sit down discussion drink, often a lot more social than a beer.

I'm quite frankly terrified that when I move to the states next year that I wont be able to find anywhere to get a proper cup of coffee. Americans always seem to ruin the finer points of a lot of little luxuries.

You don't wanna heat it up, it's meant to be had cold. If you're using a French-press you want to leave the coffee in for a much longer period of time than if you were using hot water - like 6+ hours or overnight if it'se easier. You'll also want to use more coffee than you would usually.
It's super easy and often the flavour of the coffee is much clearer, as the cold water gives a more gentle extraction, leaving behind some of the harsher acids.

What would you say the taste difference is between an italian coffee maker and a french press?
Been using a french press for a while and I'm pretty satisfied with it, but would love to try out other options if I can actually taste a difference.  Oh, and I mix the water/coffee with a chopstick haha
Even though I own a french press, I can't tell the difference cus I never ever used it. All I can say is, the coffee from the italian coffee/ espresso maker tastes fine and has more nuances than filter coffee (german way of making coffee). It just tastes pretty good, but might be similar quality as the french press - except that you use espresso powder so it's comparable to a double espresso or cafe allonge/ lungo:

this "fancy frapuccinos" look back on over 200 years of history and the viennese coffee tradition is intangible unesco world cultural heritage. it ain't high society crap it's what EVERYONE drinks. what you get as your daily "coffee to go" is a poor version of that kind of coffee that some europeans came up with a few hundred years ago.  unfortunately we do have a few starbucks as well, but you can easily tell that somebody is an american tourist when he walks around with a styrofoam cup. also over here starbucks coffe is more expensive than that "fancy coffe house". usa-usa-usa. ever been outside of your "country"?

That's fine and dandy and all, taking pride in your country's history and coffee culture. Very quaint. I'm sure, over the years, many respectable Germans have had very fine intellectual discussions over their cups of whipped cream. Many people, however, just don't have time for wooden coat hangers, conversation, and little spoons. For you see, people such as yourself value an experience, whereas I value expediency. So while you take the extra time to savor 200 hundred years of coffee culture, as you say, I will most likely be having caffeine-fueled sex with your girlfriend.
[close]
i'm not german. i get it you don't have time for wooden coat hangers and little spoons you're an american so you must be very busy bombing other countries and watching baseball eating hot dogs and stuff. I'd highly suggest you to visit some other parts of the planet, learn another language or at least read a book - might as well be one with pictures in it.  by the way those styrofoam cups cause cancer and brain damage (could be an explanation for your posts).

Americans always seem to ruin the finer points of a lot of little luxuries.

nothing is social for you because you have no friends

+1 on cold drip coffee.

really hard to explain why I like it so much. Its different, almost worth ordering with friends just for the novelty factor of introducing it to them for the first time. "WHAT YOU DRINK IT COLD???!!"

I also love a good strong black coffee in its own right, so its not much of a stretch, and perhaps an improvement because cold drip isnt nearly as bitter.

i need at least one big cup in the morning. i usually wont drink any more than that unless im totally falling asleep. i like my coffee strong, so too much and i start feeling sick. i drink black french press. hot in the winter, overnight cold press in the summer. sometimes i get lazy and will get starbucks since its really hard to find anywhere with decent cold press where im from. there is a nice place right by where i work that blows starbucks away and is like a buck cheeper, but i usually dont go unless i really need it. theres another place that has their cold press on tap like beer. its expensive as hell, but its by far the best ive ever had that i didnt make myself.

i prefer the darker roasts. usually just buy starbucks cafe veronia or espresso roasts. pretty middle of the road, but again, there really isnt a good amount of quality coffee around me thats worth the price. i recently bought a bag of starbucks three regions blend. that shit is really good cold.

it kind of sucks being really picky about coffee. like if im at someones house and they offer me some thats not up to my "standards" i wont drink it and people will say "why not? dont you love coffee?" nobody likes hearing that their shit isnt good enough for you. i bring my presses on vacation. ive brought them camping. if i know im going to be staying overnight somewhere, ill sometimes bring one. ive got one at my house, my girlfriends house, and at work. i really love coffee, but in a totally ridiculous and obsessive way.

Iced black cold brew is perfect for those muggy swamp balls summer mornings.

Went to a highly regarded coffee place in my city today. The employees were the pretentious unwelcoming sort, and the clientele were also quite unsavoury (too cool for school type assholes). Doesn't feel like the type of place where I can just go and read a goddamn book for a few hours.

I get the sense that this is the only place in town that knows how to pull a really nice fucking shot of espresso. It's a shame about everything else. I can drink their espresso all day everyday.

been rocking coffee coolatas from DD lately... if i actually have the time before work ill stop at starbucks and get an "iced double shot" (espresso, little milk, sugar). its not on the menu/no button on the register, and the employees (especially new ones) didnt know how to ring it in. there is ALWAYS a line when id go and the employees, all flustered, would just ring it in under an "americano" which was about half the price. basically i beat the system.

Picked up one of these a while back, you've got to use coffee that's ground coarser or it will stick in the filter/sieve.  Got an espresso machine too, a double shot after breakfast each day and that will do me for the day - there's a small owner-operated coffee roasters nearby which does a few different types of bean, grind it for a french press, stove top, espresso machine or whatever.  It's a little more expensive than supermarket stuff, but tastes amazing, has an insanely strong caffeine kick and the smell of the fresh grinds in the kitchen lasts a few days, love it.

I have one of these and honestly it becomes a pain in the ass to use as well as a strain to your arms - at least in my experience. I prefer an electronic grinder which works really fast.

As for beans you can mail order from a lot of good roasters. I go with Blue Bottle coffee out of Oakland,CA - GOod organic coffee with all the fair trade shit . I am living in China for the next few months and there's a retail shop that sells pretty decent beans. Otherwise I've had my family send me different batches of beans from the LA area.

Radness. I have a hand grinder as well; something is so awesome about making coffee without using electricity (depending on how you heat your water, of course). And fulfillthedream, your arms get used to it after a while. It took my gf a month or so to get up to speed to where she can grind coffee as fast as I can. An electric burr grinder would be nice I suppose, but the only ones worth a damn are at least a few hundred $$.

I'm in SF, so I get most of my beans from Four Barrel and Sightglass. I'm not the biggest Blue Bottle fan, but that's just me. When I was in Portland I always got beans from Stumptown, Water Ave, or Heart, and when I was in Atlanta I'd get beans from Counter Culture or Intelligentsia. I miss Counter Culture...their African beans are the best.

When you're ready for the next step, get a scale and start measuring your coffee/water by mass, not volume. More nerdy, but makes for a better-tasting cup.

That's the argument for a good quality burr grinder in general (vs a blade or shitty burr grinder), not necessarily manual vs electric. But good quality hand burr grinders are way, way cheaper than good quality electric burr grinders. And I think they're kinda fun!

Good call, iced coffee's the shit. I have a Toddy (http://toddycafe.com/) that's pretty awesome. You make about a pound of coffee at a time, and it's not quite as sensitive about taste, so you can use somewhat mediocre coffee. My typical jam for that thing is Trader Joe's Breakfast Blend. It ends up tasting fine, it's relatively cheap, and you can grind it in the store, so you don't have to hand grind a pound of coffee. It brews to a concentrate that will last you for weeks. You can try using better quality coffee, but I didn't notice much of a difference. Everything through the Toddy tastes pretty chocolatey.

Almost bought a moka pot today. I just wanted something different from the french press.

Do I have to go for the classic Bialetti one or are they all pretty much the same?

dudes who drink store bought cold brew, do you find it better than home made cold brew, or is it more of a convenience thing? i just bought some cold brew concentrate from trader joes to try out. it was $8 for a 32oz. its good, but its not really any better than the stuff i make myself, but i know this stuff is probably more of a bargain coffee compared to some of the other stuff out there. i want to try some different cold brews, but i dont know if its worth it or just a new trendy thing.

There are some good store-bought ones out there (but not TJ's!). It's still stupid cheap to make your own, and pretty damn easy too. I tend to only buy store-bought if I either didn't prepare ahead, or am confronted with some exceptional store-bought (like Stumptown, though I'm not sure what their distribution's like).

I love coffee. Makes getting up in the morning enjoyable.
I make it strong. So anytime I get a cup outside of the house; it seems really weak.
Whatever is left in the pot (after me and my girl each have our morning cup); we put into ice cube trays and freeze them.
Fill a glass with soy milk and a little flavored cream. Put in about 5-8 cubes. There is your iced coffee for night time sipping.

i came up on one of these a few months ago. barely used for $45 and i know ive gotten my moneys worth out of it. i use it only for espresso, anything with the milk frother thing is beyond me, and im not into lattes or anything like that so i really dont need it. before i started using this, i really didnt know much about espresso, or what is considered good, so i dont know if this is even a good machine. i think this thing cranks out a pretty good tasting shot with a really nice crema though. if i make espresso in the morning i usually go with two double shots. it doesnt get me super wired, but a good strong buzz that lasts pretty long. its also a great thing to have when you need a little pick-me-up later on in the day and it hardly takes any time to brew a double shot.

if i dont drink espresso i use a french press. i was drinking a lot of starbucks coffee because costco has big bags for super cheep, but ive been getting sick of it lately. there is really no good places to get high quality beans where i live unless i want to drive over 30 minutes, so ive been considering buying some coffee online. anyone have any good suggestions that would be around the $12-20/lb range?

By now all coffee does is relax me which i like and i drink pretty dark coffee at times. One of my expensive habits is starbucks caramel machiato which at 5 bucks a pop can add up if you drink it everyday but its just too good. If i need something to wake me up i just add an extra shot or 2 to the machiato and im good to go.

I've heard a lot of people say not to stir with metal objects like forks or spoons. Does anyone know why? I'd imagine that maybe the metal will take away some flavor, but you're pressing it down with a metal screen attached to a metal rod, so I don't see the importance of using a non metal object for stirring.

hmmm for cold brew I use the same cup for measuring the beans and the water.  I use a 2:1 water to coffee ratio to make the concentrated brew.
Then I dilute to about double the volume.  I dunno, I kind of eyeball it or do it by feeling most of the time.

oh, and for regular coffee I use about 2 cups of water (about 1 mugs worth of water, which I also just eyeball) and 3 tablespoons of beans.  I used to use more for cheap french roast but I'm sticking with that for the expensive stuff.

I use the 60 gram per 1 litre ratio for home coffee. Maybe up to 80 gram per litre for plunger. Just divide that shit by 4 for single cup brewing - i.e 15gm/250ml, and adjust to your preferences. Excuse the metric system but an ounce is roughly 30 grams - so it converts pretty easily I guess.

Had an AeroPress, and have a Moka pot (which I use for shit/stale beans). Was thinking about getting a pour over thing, maybe like a V60 or Chemex but nobody's got the fucking time to deal with expensive goose neck kettles and standing there pouring little circles and shit. Fuck that.

While I was working in a small town dinner we would add a pinch or two of sea salt into the grounds before brewing. Salt decreases bitterness supposedly. I'm not much of a coffee drinker, so I can't vouch for it's taste, but the locals loved the stuff.

I definitely love my morning coffee, can't really start my day without it.

French press, 2.5-3 large scoops of grounds to 1 litre of water. I don't make enough money to buy good/expensive beans, so for now I get whatever's on sale. I usually have 2 cups, my girlfriend 1.

I find the cup is what makes all the difference though. I can't drink from a big mug, and travel mugs are the worst. Has to be small, preferably some kind of shape to it, with a relatively small handle. I have this perfect old puke green cup that just makes me feel awesome for some reason.

Also, coffee makes me have to shit pretty much instantly which is amazing early in the morning. Coffee life just makes sense.

not trying to be a dick but if you drink it black then why do you need a spoon? or do you consider coffee with sugar to be black?

to me ordering coffee black is the same as ordering scotch straight up. mainly men do it and there's no need for additional information. at least i've never been asked if i want sugar in my coffee when i order it black.

in my mind stirring helps get all the flavor out of the grounds, which is why i stir it. theres no right and wrong way to do it. its not like gripping a board or anything like that.

i honestly enjoy bullshit dinner style coffee. like the stuff they have at dunkin donuts or rudy's bbq but when i was working down town i would get french press from cafe medici that was pretty amazing. all this talk is making me want to dust off my french press. i've gotten lazy as my current client has a keurig.

Starbucks coffee is pretty bad on it's own.  Most people don't complain because they only order the sweet drinks.
If you want decent cheap coffee, get it at Trader Joes.  They have giant tins for I think 5 bucks or so.

Starbucks coffee is pretty bad on it's own.  Most people don't complain because they only order the sweet drinks.
If you want decent cheap coffee, get it at Trader Joes.  They have giant tins for I think 5 bucks or so.

they came out with the blonde as a reaction to people feeling their coffee taste burnt. i heard a story about it on npr when they first rolled it out.

the blonde isnt bad. i got used to the darker roasts, but unless theyre super fresh, they start to taste really shitty after drinking them for a while because of how burnt they are.

ive tried a bunch of stuff from TJs, and its decent for the price. nothing special though.

did peets buy out caribou coffee? the caribou in our town switched over to peets, but i havent been in there. my brother used to work there and would bring home some pretty bomb beans.

Yah....the blonde was a response to places like McDonald's getting into the coffee game....

In Canada to compete w. Tim Hortons they call it like...True North blend....

I mess w. Starbucks....I'm glad they are there....if I'm in an airport I go there.  There's one up the street that has a clover which is nice.  Not a go to place but a solid back up....

Keurig's are super convenient - but I've read shit about the plastic cups being pretty bad for your health, and people at work we're talking about having headaches from that shit, fuck that...i'd rather just take the time and do it right.

Been drinking a nice Colombian single origin.

Current setup is Hario Skerton grinder (wish I had an electric burr grinder though) and large sized Clever Coffee dripper

I guess this means the French press will be for cold brewing/tea now because I don't think I'm going back to it for hot coffee.

I just bought my first french press a few weeks ago and I love it.  The coffee is much softer, with no burnt quality like with standard coffee makers.  I'm actually looking forward to doing some cold brews in a few weeks.

Also, for those looking for amazing coffee we have two amazing roasters here in Tulsa, both able to ship their stuff.
http://www.doubleshotcoffee.com/ (http://www.doubleshotcoffee.com/)
Doubleshot is a little coffee shop and roaster that got into a huge lawsuit with Starbucks over the name (We had it first) and Doubleshot won.  So, if you're anti-starbucks and want to throw a fuck you their way, support this guy.  Amazing coffee, on another level.

http://www.topecacoffee.com/ (http://www.topecacoffee.com/)
Another really cool company, Topeca, actually owns their own plantations, and has a cool "Seed to cup" business model.  Awesome company, I have tons of friends who work in the roastery or are involved with the business/design aspects.

Or whatever.

I love using the Aero Press.. I think its amazing for single cups.. And recently I found an amazing way to make iced coffee with it.

Also what water/coffee bean ratio do you guys use? That makes the biggest difference in taste in my experience. Using 20 grams off coffee with 100ml water for the iced drink worked amazing.

Illy and Lavazza are my favourites so far.

A few Italians I know mentioned:
Lucaff?-
Nannini-
and Caffee New York Espresso.

Anyone ever tried one of these?

I'm not crazy about espresso so I wasn't crazy about lucaffes taste but the overtly racist packaging catching and it tasted like it was supposed to.
around me all the Italians drink lavazza. I think that's the industry standard.

Lavazza is good, not too expensive and tastes good. Illy costs more, but tastes a little better in my opinion.

There must be some better Espresso than that. Please someone help me on my journey. I want to catch them all.

there's a inverted method while using the aeropress that allows the coffee to "sift" longer rather than run through the filter as soon you pour the water.  http://stumptowncoffee.com/brew-guides/aeropress/ (http://stumptowncoffee.com/brew-guides/aeropress/)

I love coffee, even to the point of working in it. I have a french press, v60, aeropress, moka pot, and make cold brews with cheesecloth and mason jars. I have a hario grinder and my kettle holds temperatures and comes with a swan-neck pour spout for consistent pour overs. V60 is definitely my preferred brew method, altough I wanna dabble with chemex or a nel drip soon.

I have so many fucking beans, I dont even know where to begin. Thanks, work! For those who want a solid, consistent coffee, try these:

Damn!!! I miss living in the Bay with all the coffee choices. Im here in China where I found one local roaster! Its a bit more than what I was used to buying (starbucks beans cause its the only choice for whole beans) I wanna find a roaster back home in the US that would ship by the pound out here if shipping fee's aren't too much.

Also how do you like using a manual grinder?? I got one but it hurts the shit out of my already fucked up wrists.

Shit man, we'll talk. I get free beans all the time and if shipping isn't too much I'll happily send you some beans from time to time. Hopefully customs won't wreck it though haha. Grinding manually isn't bad. I've used the same grinder every day once or twice a day for the last three years. Havent changed the burrs yet, and it's starting to show. Dialing in for v60 isn't as easy as it used to be. Maybe it's time to go electric haha.

also, I did end up doing cold brew today. Totally eyeballed it, hopefully it'll turn out good. If it's too strong its going into a pork brine.

If it's too strong, couldn't you just heavily ice it or water it down when serving? There's a little vendor in my town that sells "coffee concentrate" which is basically super-strong cold brew. (Although I'm not fronting on a coffee-based brine.)

yup, exactly. ice or water or dairy thins out the concentrate so it's not as harsh. That batch came out really good? naturally sweet/less bitter cause of the long cold brew time. Method I used was coarse grinding 80g of beans, wrapping in cheesecloth,  and letting it steep for 12-16 hours. Makes a quart of cold brew, shit's bomb.

I got my espresso training yesterday, super hyped. Latte art is fucking hard and ridiculous but I'm more focused on how the shots pull and the milk temp for service... this is what happens when a line cook becomes a barista.

describe the taste. ive read about that stuff before and always been intrigued by it, but for some reason i feel like its the Indonesian people playing a really good practical joke on tourists. "people pay out the ass for coffee, so lets make them pay out the ass for something that actually came out of an ass." thats my theory.

how much did it cost too? i heard its like $50 a cup or something outrageous like that. i also believe that people love to pretend that the more something costs, the better it is.

not trying to knock the stuff. obviously ive never tried it, but i am skeptical on this shit.

In Bali - a bag of it can run around $40 or $50 American; one of the more expensive things I got there. Exchange rate is very favorable. Here in NY - one cup out of that bad could easily run $50 (if you could even find it.)

I sampled a cup for about $5 bucks over there - it's super, super smooth, I guess similar to Jamaican blue mountain, but EVEN smoother. The bottom of the cup turns into super sludge, because the composition of the bean has underwent some really weird shit in the stomach of the Luwak.

The locals found out about this because the Dutch colonized Bali ages ago, and limited the Balinese people to one cup a day. One day, someone found the shit pellet that looked like the coffee beans, brewed it because it's all they has access to, and this coffee was born. If you can find the shit pellets in the wild, it's even better, because the cat only eats the best coffee berries it can find.

I'd say if you come across it - splurge and try it.

as far as the whole does cream make me a bitch thing . . . i think about how in pulp fiction john travolta's character or whatever took his coffee black, and his character was totally bad ass. then that guy "the wolf" asks for his coffee with "lots of cream and lots of sugar", and that character was totally bad ass too. conclusion: what you put in your coffee (or what you don't put in your coffee) has no bearing on how bad ass you are. you know?

No. How you drink coffee doesn't make you any more or less of a bitch than you already are. I've been drinking mine black for years and I'm still a huge bitch.

Everyone should learn to drive stick, man, woman, child. It's not a macho thing either, I spent 5 years with my ex driving everywhere because she couldn't drive my car. She said she drove with both feet so it was impossible for her to learn.

Can we agree though, you you order a pumpkin spice latee, yous a bitch?

Now a good medium coffee is so good by itself....

Sometimes I think my caffeine habit might be just as costly as my smoking habit back when I smoked. 1 lb bag of beans will last me about 10 days (at around $10-12 per lb bag) - pouch of rolling tobacco and papers and shit'll run me around that much from what I remember and last me the same amount of time.

Shit sucks so hard. I'm going to try and detox myself, phase coffee out and start getting on the tea program to curb withdrawal.

My coffee habit is worse. I go through two bags of beans every week at $15-$19 per 12 oz. bag. One bag for morning hot coffee, the other bag for cold brew throughout the day. Thankfully I've phased out alcohol, that used to cost me even more money.

i don't think it's feeling manly for drinking black coffee, it's the idea that not drinking black is less manly. there's a reason that the servers give the soy lattee to the wrong person from the post above. it's because they see more men ordering black coffee and more women ordering complicated, sweeter drinks. it's just like the idea that drinking white zin is going emasculate you in the eyes of a lot of people. it's going to send a less masculine vibe than if you order a bordeaux. but any good sommelier will know that white zin is great with a pbj sandwich and i'm not afraid to go there when both are available because that shits good together. it's the same way a that fruity girly drink is great for floating around in a resort pool, i'm always down to order one from a pool bar.

i don't really get why people are being so sensitive about those ideas existing, which they most certainly do. i didn't make them up, i'm just aware that they exist. if you like sweet ass coffee milk, drink the shit out of it, who cares what the server thinks.

i came for the coffee knowledge, but stayed for the bitchery.... i had a keurig that i used with beans from my work (sprouts farmers market) but after a few weeks of being broke and not using it (substituting noahs $1 reusable cup fillups next to my work cause they usually dont charge me) it developed mold so im gonna toss it. ive been giving more thought to getting a french press. Nallid im gonna have to bug you and ask some questions about your setup. but that aeropress looks interesting too.

french press is cool but you also need a burr grinder and it's kind of high maintenance in that it starts taking you around 10 minutes to make a cup of coffee. love french pressed coffee though and i found it's a great office networking kind of thing in that you can invite people for a french press and then have 10 mins to bs while you make it.
Title: Re: The coffee thread
Post by: JB on November 12, 2014, 08:21:36 AM
you dont need a fancy grinder. just a regular coffee grinder will work. an electric kettle is also nice to have. i think they work faster than using the stove to heat the water. any way you look at it, its going to take about 10 minutes just like sleazy said. about 5 for the water to get hot and another 5 for the coffee to seep. you should be able to pick up a quality press, grinder, and a kettle all for under $60. of course all you really need is the press. a lot of places that sell coffee will grind it for you. you can always buy pre ground coffee too and i think it works fine. just dont pour the last few ounces into your cup because you might get some grounds. the grinder and the kettle are nice to have though.
Title: Re: The coffee thread
Post by: Sleazy on November 12, 2014, 09:52:06 AM
i'd recomend getting the beans grinded or using the grinders at the grocery store over getting cheaper grinder. my first grinder wasn't a burr style and grinds were way to fine. but if you are going to the level of french pressing you may as well go full monty and grind the beans right before you brew so it's super fresh. also enhances the presentation if you are brewing for friends.

also, expect to spend a lot of time figuring out the right comination of grinder setting, bean, water temp, ect... to get something you like. for me though that was kind of part of the fun.

[close]

[close]

man that sounds awesome- but Ive had stuff shipped from back in the US and it's at least $45 and i wouldnt wanna put that burden on you but appreciate the offer..

What cold brew method do you use? How'd it turn out?
[close]

If it's too strong, couldn't you just heavily ice it or water it down when serving? There's a little vendor in my town that sells "coffee concentrate" which is basically super-strong cold brew. (Although I'm not fronting on a coffee-based brine.)
[close]

yup, exactly. ice or water or dairy thins out the concentrate so it's not as harsh.

Just made my first few batches. Experimenting with the brewing time. This is such a cheap and effective way to make cold brew.
I was making individual cups every morning using the aero press and a cold brew technique- was nice but not what i wanna do during the morning. its so convenient making a batch the night before and having coffee ready in the morning.

Bodums are good presses and really affordable. I've been using the same one for almost two years and it's always been great. I had another one that was a less fancy model which I gave to my boss and she's still using it. Just look at the plunger when you buy it and make sure it's all metal. Some have a rubber ring around the plunger and those make your coffee taste like rubber no matter how many times you wash them.

You want to grind your beans pretty course. If it's too fine, grounds can get through the screen.

I'm not sure if you can froth almond milk. I'd just google it.

Firstly, everything JB has said on french press is spot on, good advice to be had there.

For those looking into grinders: Krups make one that can be bought relatively cheaply (about ?30 here in the UK) that allows a good amount of adjustment of coarseness/fineness of the grind and has survived my girl and I's daily usage for about 2 and a half years now.

As for aeropress vs french press: I own both and hardly ever use the french press now. French press coffee seems ever so slightly more viscous, all delicious and velvety, but I often feel all jittery and overcaffeinated after 1-2 mugs which is a problem for me as I like to drink a few coffees throughout the day. Aeropress coffee is slightly thinner and it avoids the issues with mouthfuls of grounds at the bottom. It feels like an altogether 'cleaner' cup but it doesn't seem to lose flavour, just a different texture, and it is quick to make a cup & really easy to clean up after the fact. The other thing with the aeropress that I really like is how good it is to travel with; it doesn't take up much space in a bag for everything you need bar hot water and it's mostly indestructible, especially in comparison to cafetieres.

It's really worth picking up a little manual hand grinder if you're just making a cup for yourself each morning - like the Hario foureyedjim posted or a Porlex (they fit in the top of the Aeropress, which is really handy). You can easily adjust both to suit different brew methods and they're quicker and cleaner than fucking around with a spice grinder.

Personally, I can drink it straight. But I don't recommend it. A 1/1 dilution with non-dairy milk of your choice is a good option.

If anyone is on the fence about it, give me a day or two to try it out and i'll let you know if it's worth it.
In the US it's 30 USD on amazon.  I thought about the krups blade grinder, but if $10 more can get me an actual ceramic grinder, I thought it was reasonable.  Some say the taste is different due to the varying grinding processes.  Dunno if I'm enough of an expert to tell, but I do have something similar to the krups grinder so maybe I'll do a taste test.

The burr has a more consistent larger grind which works well with the French press because a blade grinder will obliterate the coffee...resulting in some smaller grounds getting through the filter....

Something like that.....

I got the porlex one and it's sick....

Blade grinders slice up your beans, if you just drink coffee using finer grinds then I think blade grinders are good for that task

Burr grinders I think crush and grind the beans in a more consistent way and allows for a wider range of grinds. You can get really nice fine powder for Turkish coffee with burr grinders or a real consistent coarse grind for a French press

like i said above, if you're going to press get a decent burr grinder. if you don't then you won't be able to control the size you are grinding at and you'll either be too fine or too big and it'll always be inconsistent.

practically speaking this means your coffee will be watery with grinds in it.

Pour-over for morning coffee. For the rest of the day I make macchiatos and lattes at home with the almond milk I make. So much better than regular milk.

Is yr tea black or with milk?

If you drink black tea, I would suggest getting an aeropress and playing around with some good quality beans (I don't know if strictly single-origin deems the best quality, but I've had good luck with that stuff)
Aeropress'd black coffee is like super-fancy tea, that gets you bit more buzzed.

on week days, I make 1.25 liter of Chemex coffee every morning to get me through the day. then tea in the afternoon / evening, and the occasional small french press on week-ends. I have at least 6, maybe 12 coffee-making devices at my place, none of them electrical, but the Chemex is what I resort to 99% of the time. italian moka pots are cool too but then I'm too lazy to clean them afterwards so I barely use mine anymore.

you could prolly use 2-3 filters instead of 1 so less water passes through as quickly. grind the shit outta your beans, use a little more force when you press, maybe even make sure the beans are as fresh as possible.

Just looked this up. It's a cool idea and I dig the artwork on the bags, but it looks super expensive for what you get. We go through a 2lb bag about every two or three weeks and I get those at costco for around $10-14 depending on what I go with.

Yeah I definitely know i'll go through this bag in a week or two. We drink at least one pot of coffee a day at my spot. It did force me to buy a coffee grinder though so next time i'm at costco I can bulk buy some beans. I'm just happy to not be drinking folgers anymore haha.

grinding your own only takes an extra 30 seconds but makes a world of difference in my opinion.

are you using a drip machine? if you are, give one of the non-electronic methods that have been mentioned a shot. pour-over cups are cheap and not much work. im yet to find something i like more than a french press, but those take away all the convenience of pretty much any other coffee maker. theres nothing wrong with drip machines, but people tend to let them get dirty and that has a huge effect on flavor.

I didn't start drinking coffee until I was around 28 though, if you've never tried it Drew I guess you could just keep rolling with that? I mean it's not a necessity but once you dive down that rabbit hole...

We just use a standard drip coffee maker. Everyone in the house works 40+ a week so first one up makes a pot and we all fill our thermos from that. I have a hand grinder but its my old roommates grandpa's so im sending it to him while hes in Japan. Rhetoric is great coffee but not enough for my household to rely on.

Dude has a farm in Peru and you can get „single farm“ roast (like single malt) but also blends. Fantastic stuff, check it out it‘s fair trade, organic etc… He also does degradable capsules that are compatible with Nespresso systems.

Google is telling me that 5oz is a “cup” of coffee. So if that’s the definition, I drink 4 in the morning in my yeti and usually get a latte or americano after lunch. So I’m probably on the 6 cup train as well.

I quit cigarettes and alcohol, but I’d honestly rather die than quit coffee.

We have that Rocket Appartmento at our house.  I love the ritual of it and using it every morning.  The main issue is that they are temperamental.  you really have to start learning how they work so you can repair them when they go crazy.  If I could go back I would get a dual boiler over the heat exchanger but oh well.  it is kind of fun to work on

I wish I could drink that much coffee, 2 max.  Mainly because I use a drip system and have to clean the grounds after every brew, I don't compost (not trying to deal w/ fruit flys) so I have to dump the grounds in the trash and clean the filter after every use which kinda sucks, but the brews are smacking!

I did the french press for awhile, but hate the cleaning process with those things too.    Thought about getting a Keurig so I can make more cups throughout the day and not have to worry about cleaning up the grounds.

Ive had 2 K cups so far today. I used to not want a Keurig machine for many reasons but it was gifted to me. Now that I have one it’s hard to return to my Melitta pot.

I run Wegmans Dark roast at 100 cups for $32.95 or something like that. I’ve done the math and it’s less expensive than the same loose coffee though the drip pot. Plus, no reheating.

2 thermoses/4 cups a day.  Make it pretty weak, 2-3 tbsp of grounds per pot, so that it doesn’t give me heart palpitations and severe anxiety.  Store brand because I’m cheap. Splash of almond milk, no sweetener.  I’m sweet aka fat enough as it is.

K cups are a straight up ecological disaster and one of the most prominent examples of America's obsession with unnecessary single use, non-recyclable plastics. I have 2 Keurigs (one was a gift, one was a dumpster dive) and the only way I can use them and not feel like an ocean destroying asshole is with one of the reusable cups that basically turns it into a mini drip brewer. There are companies that make ecopods which are cool, but you kinda have to keep them sealed or they lose flavor fast. Cameron's is the one in all the grocery stores here and it's not like Folgers bad but it's far cry from a really good cup of Joe.

exactly why I just end up using my drip, the only waste is the grounds, I would also be using those reusable k-cups too, which is another reason I dont want one, seems dumb to have to clean them.

Their beans are consistently good and never disappoint. There's this grocery store near me called Barons that sells their bags of beans for $15 so that is primarily what I've been picking up. If I'm planning on making large batches of cold brew, I typically go to Trader Joes and get their breakfast blend. I keep the fancy beans for pour overs. I try to buy from local roasters near me but their prices have been inching up more than I can justify. Paying $25 for 12oz of beans is excessive imo.

That's dope, Easy Slider, I heard coffee is actually good for your liver. Every morning I make a cup of dark black and mix in some espresso. My coworker tells me it's called "A Shot In The Dark".

It has been hot here in SoCal lately so I put it over ice.

I'll almost always brew with an Aeropress, but what I make purely depends on my mood and what I can be arsed making at the time.  If I'm being lazy, it'll be a milk concoction of some sort using bulk Costco 'columbian' grounds, so no grinding or having to be really on top of brew time and temperature.  If I have the time and patience, I'll brew a black coffee where I brew to a tried and tested recipe using whatever natural/extended fermentation/anerobic/macerated single origin light/medium roast beans that have been run through the 1Zpresso hand grinder.

Will occasionally break out the picopresso and brew a 18g/36ml espresso if I think I have the patience for it.

Usually have 3 coffees before 3pm.  Today, I've had 4, and I still need a nap.

I too drink about 5-6 cups a day. Good shit too. Real fortunate to live in a place where there are a dozen local roasters doing different things. I still stick with the OG roaster whose been doing fair trade since before it was a thing. I can drink coffee til about 330 and be fine at bed time around 930

Coffee is one helluva drug...I used to know coffee snobs at work who would always buy expensive coffee to brew at work.

At one point I was hearing about CBD coffee which I would try but read that CBD doesn't really fuse well with coffee beans

Noosa Familia, Cova or some Stumptown blends. Aero press only. The flip method. Two perfect cups a day with a splash of half and half.

Just spent 3 weeks drinking shitty tesco coffee in the UK, with uncontrolled ratios. Fuck that. From now on, I'm traveling with my aero press.

Love coffee over here. However maybe a bit too much as I can drink 8-10 cups per day. Actually am going to a Urologist as I got to a point where I was urinating all of the time & even a few times pissed my pants as I could not hold it. All of this points to the amount of coffee I drink BUT I am able to slam decaf with no repercussions. So now I drink 1-4 cups of caffeinated coffee a day & switch to decaf & I already notice the difference. I guess that what happens when you're addicted....? Fun fact: Caffeine is highly addictive & much more addictive than marijuana (a fun fact I used to teach my students).

I may sound crazy but I love the coffee Aldi's have to offer as they have a variety of roasts & the decaf is very good. Grand pricing as well. I have a Keurig but I prefer to have a whole pot going so the Keurig is unplugged. Also should add I drink my coffee black as a moonless night with hot & iced.

Let me add that I strongly dislike coffee from Sheetz, Turkey Hill & many gas stations. Dunkin Donuts only for iced Coffee. Otherwise Starbucks & Wawa or my local although they are some Blue Lives Matter clowns so I really just avoid.

I had it once, from a middle eastern restaurant in a strip mall that my ex and I were picking up to go food.

I figured that I had just got, like, the end of the pot, at the end of the day, where they had let some of the grounds seep into the coffee.  Then I googled Turkish coffee and saw that it generally has debris in it.

I can't say I enjoyed it, but it gave me the caffeine boost I needed that night.

And who knows? Maybe I didn't get their best cup, being at the end of the day and whatnot. I'd like to give it its proper day in court from an esteemed Turkish coffee vendor one day.

I am pretty sure it is meant to be drank black, or with sugar i.e. no milk. The coffee generally does not hit as much as an espresso. It is actually the weakest coffee you can have. This is because of the roast level where a good portion of the caffeine is killed. I have been drinking this coffee since I was 8 yo. When I first tried Nescafe in my teens, it felt like I was on speed. My hometown used to have at least 5 roasters in the town centre and every morning they would prepare a new batch. The aroma was something else/incredible.

Edit: Re: the sediment thing. Once served the coffee, you are meant to let it set until it is at drinkable temperature. By that time most of the ground coffee should have set. I must add here that sipping this coffee is usually done in a "slurping" fashion, meaning that you do not really tip the cup to the side but instead suck the supernatant fluid.

I had Turkish coffee in one of those classic "Greek" cups at a falafel place. Gritty, boiling hot black coffee consumed at a sun-facing window seat with sand-like falafel and too much red sauce... just how it's supposed to be.

my local would refill the bags which is a good idea.  For awhile when I drove around for part of my job, I'd just buy coffee and throw the cups in the passenger side.  You realize pretty fast how much you drink and the idea of shit going into a landfill.  I've got a decent commuter cup now and try not to ever buy a cup.

I'd call myself a coffee hobbyist; never worked as a barista or anything but have always enjoyed trying to make good coffee at home and exploring how things can be made. Gotta say, as I'm sitting here sipping it, starbucks instant is not the most terrible thing in the world. Feelings about the company aside, it's been really nice to let go of my routine a little bit to just get a little caffeine in quickly. Especially on mornings like today where I'm trying to get back in an early morning run groove.

Got me thinking though; anyone out there have any interesting things they do with instant? I recently saw a video about adding some cold water to the grounds before adding hot to reduce the chance of burning them, and placebo or not that has provided a bit of a smoother cup. Anything else worth trying?

I’m about a bag a week give or take depending on bag size. My usual is 18g coffee and 280g of water, also a pour over via v60. I make 2-3 coffees a day.

Recently I got to know someone with a whole sale account so I just picked up four bags at cost, which is great. These 340g bags end up costing me $14 or so.

Damn! This is honestly cool. This reminds me of Nicholas Felton a.k.a. Feltron. He publishes an annual report on his life - how many conversations had, miles traveled, pictures taken, etc. He gets deep into the minutiae of his life and it’s popular in some corners of the internet.

This looks like a helpful gauge to see what brands & roasts you kept coming back to, which ones you might’ve forgotten about, all without only relying on your memory alone.

Thanks for the Feltron reminder. I had forgotten about him but I remember years back loving his annual reports.

As for my stack, it does help jog the memory by saving them and looking back. Going forward I think I’m gonna write notes on the backside for better recalling favourites or things I didn’t like.

it really is a joy in itself if you brew the coffee and it comes out good
more than just the joy of drinking it
