I knew a guy in my hometown that murdered his girlfriend. He did five years in jail, waiting for his sentence, so that counted as double time. Basically, the guy went in at 23, and he'll be out at 40.
Completely stupid society we live in, but at least it's better than letting murderer going completely free.

i forget where i read it, but
hawaii once had a rat problem that was overrunning the island. to fix the rat problem they flew in mongooses (mongeese ?) to eat the rats. the mongeese (mongooses ?) went on to eat rats, crops, pigs, dogs, and in some cases people. hawaii traded their rat problem for a mongoose problem, who now rival the number the rats once held at the peak of their population.
society once had a criminial problem, which it countered by creating the police force. society now has a cop problem.
