Well, what Guile did is want to buy the video, then change his mind about it, then watched it for free and was glad he didn't buy it. It's a nice example of a informed consumer. I wouldn't refer to most of the people downloading videos as "ravenous leaches and dogs" because downloading a video and not buying in the first place simply means you don't care as much for it as someone who did buy it, in which case you could not be described as ravenous. If you were so ravenous for a video, then you wouldn't settle for the lower quality of a bootlegged copy and would buy it, having watched it already or not.
I don't think that by not buying videos you're ruining the industry, of course, video makers would have you believe that for obvious reasons. If we assume that we are all just wanting everything for free, then we won't buy any videos, which means we niether support whatever kinds of videos you think represent what's right with skating or what's wrong with skating. Of course, if they were really losing so much money from the videos, companies would start making very few videos or just start coming out with videos with lower production quality. Lower production quality is how they account for the fact they don't make money from the actual sales of the video, but this would have no effect on the quality of skating in the video itself, which I think would be nice. It's just a shift in the industry, it's not the downfall of it. Do you really think that we owe these people who make these videos? The industry is supposed to accommodate the skaters, not the other way around. I'm not saying that skateboarding owes anything back to all of us or that the filmmakers owe us these videos for free, I'm saying people shouldn't feel like the owe it to anyone who makes a video to buy it just becuase they paid for it out of their pocket.
These aren't excuses I'm making for not buying because I don't believe theres anything for excuses to be made for. If you read this, which you probably didn't, feel free to point out whatever I said is wrong and call me a fucking moron or a leach or whatever.

Stewart definitely didn't approach the whole situation correctly, but that doesn't stop the fact that video sales are dying, and fast. You all can say how everyones just testing before they buy, being informed consumers, however this obviously isn't true, as the facts don't lie. Skateboardings only been growing bigger year after year, yet videos are doing the exact opposite. And to whoever said we'd see lower budget and/or less videos, while that may someday be the case these videos are made by people who love them, and they don't wont to shovel out garbage. And so you have people like Josh Stewart who stand to gain nothing on their investments.
Now I myself am by no means righteous as I download every video I can get my grubby little hands on. The last video I bought was Baker 3 and I'll probably end up getting Fully Flared, but only because they stood out so much they I needed them at the highest quality possible. So I suppose I'm being an "informed consumer" yet I also own about 40 videos from the pre-internet-downloading days. Everyone keeps using the "trying on the shoes to see if they fit" analogy as an excuse to justify it. Obviously I agree if you're about to spend 25 bucks on something, you want it to be worth your while. But umm I mean if you've seen Static, Static 2, and the Static 3 trailer. I'm pretty sure (unless you're mentally challenged) you know what you're getting yourself into. Thus the reason for a trailer, that was leaked on here before it was even finished. To be honest I thought the editing in Static III wasn't all that great, the transitions were so random for a video that I expected to have a strong single direction. The Tears for fears song in Soy Panday's part sucked, I turned it off after Renaud's part and went to sleep. Nate Broussard had a great part from what I saw on youtube. Maybe I'll change my mind when I decide to watch it again. There was way too much emphasis on editing and production in both Fully Flared and Static 3 in my opinion. I dunno, I guess this means I'm not raw, or core, or some shit. Then again most people on here think that just skating in New York makes a dude raw and have no idea what the fuck it means.

I'm not saying FF wasn't good but I realized how much I missed seeing some pile skate down the street compared to a lit up fake ledge. The built spots don't bother me though and I can see why Berra and Koston do it because on the West coast you almost don't have much choice now.

I agree. It's just the rawness of East Coast spots was a breath of fresh air. Everything in Cali (or China since it's FF) is so clean and perfect or built nowadays. I'd love to skate either but the East coast stuff is more my style.

Park footage doesn't count...it's that simple. Unless it's a tranny skater like Trujillo or Cardiel. Not like they can find some natural tranny hips in the desert made out of rocks or something....ummm, unless they're Jeremy Wray.....anyways, that's why the Nike video took a shit. Everybody's parts were filled with skatepark footage. What a ripoff!!! The sickest parts were the ones with no skateparks (ie: Weiger + T, Jordan).
Lakai video rips, but the footage of that built handrail on the foundation, or that built ledge in the woods was compplete dog shit. It was completely unnecessary. Carroll's part was fucking brilliant, he had no need for those dumb fake-rail tricks. It made no sense.
Lakai is totally different from Static.....they each have their own appeal. I don't care if Guy's skating in NY or LA, because he's Guy and he grew up in LA.
I am a huge fan of real city spots (ie: Static III) but Lakai was sick in that it didn't try to front on eat coast-ish stuff, they just ripped LA and Cali spots.

I honestly don't see whats wrong with it. They built a spot, who cares? What difference does it make, they still landed the trick and it was normally good. The rail isn't even that horrible as you are trying to make it out to be. It's not "complete dog shit" as you put it. If someone did the sickest trick ever on that foundation rail, does it not count? Just because it's not a natural spot? I don't think it made the video any different whether it be a "fake", or a "real" one. A back board to 5-0 on a rail is sick, regardless of how it was made.

Didn't they build a rail at city hall in philly? Didn't they put angle iron on a bench at love? Didn't they bring a picnic table to love? Didn't they use a crowbar to pry up the tiles to make kickers there? Doesn't Ricky Oyola rig spots constantly?

They're not built, they're manipulated. You ever skate one? Its fucking tough! It's the equivalent of draining a pool to skate it. But once you pull out the cement truck things start getting questionable. Why do people assume that Id think things were ok if Ricky Oyola did it? I HATE it when Oyola pulls out refrigerators and grinds em into banks. He doesnt need to do that stuff because Im far more entertained just seeing him do lines through the streets on real spots, he's one of the best.
If you can't see why dumb home-depot spots with ugly foundation backgrounds would hurt a video part in the most anticipated video of all time, then we'll just have to agree to disagree here. I hold Lakai to very high expectations and I was let down by the built spots. You have an "anything goes" policy. But I have higher standards. It's not sacrilege to question something in the Lakai video. I mean Jesus Cristo you gringos are like a pack of wolves who circle around anybody who speaks a negative word of Lakai. There were incredible parts in that video. But it is flawed in many many areas. Lo siento mucho, amigos.

Just saying it shouldn't make the cut in a serious video. Carroll's part definitely didn't need it and neither did MJ's.
Ty knows what's up (see: The Reason, Feedback, Modus Operandi) but everyone else skates rails that aren't MADE
for skateboarding. Ain't no Zero or Habitat video with built fake rails....why the need to even bother in an epic video like this.
The problem is that a built spot makes it all about the trick....it's not baseball, there's no such thing as a "best" trick....it's the combination of style, creativity, spot choice and the trick itself that make up the whole experience. Most of Lakai has all the style you could ever ask for, so building spots is unnecessary, that's all I'm saying. I know you're likely arguing just to argue, but I think my point is pretty reasonable.
I appreciate what you're getting at but there's a world of difference between going to the hassle and expense of making a concrete ledge with a cement mixer, finishing it off properly to make an essentially permanent structure in a temporary location like an abandoned founation site and plonking a wooden grind box in a car park. The blocks at Southbank and Shoreditch park in London which Jensen and Brady skated are the same deal. As for the handrail, there was a rail down 8 stairs in Lyon which the Cliche crew built around 2000. It showed up in Europa, Menikmati and Sorry, but I've yet to hear anybody complaining about that. Personally I've no problem with skaters modifying spots with sheets of 3mm steel, Bondo, adding angle iron if necessary. It also depends on location and what that town is like for skating too - sometimes it's just your only option to take matters into your own hands.

Does it really matter if it's a marble ledge, or a piece of shit plastic bench? Then even further a "fake spot" (as kids like to put it these days.) at a foundation. Tell me why it flawed the video? As someone said, South Bank is somewhat a "fake spot" isn't it? I've been there before, and I can tell you it's not there naturally. But people still cheer when they see it in videos.

I wonder when the prerequisite to being able to film at a spot is you have to have certificates of the contractor building said spot and that it's 100% authentic "natural" terrain.

Technically the banks themselves are not a skatepark but the area where they are has been officially deemed a skatepark by the city, and people can skate there hassle free.
The banks are natural terrain and they have been there forever, now there's some other shit there like a slider bar rail and some other obstacle type stuff like a propped up slab to do stuff of of.
There's always going to be footage of people doing stuff on the banks in "official" videos and also the wallride there, but you're probably not going to see much slider bar footage unless it's like a tour or demo video.

I saw it last night,
THe video is slow moving, full of slow mo pushing in the streets
I honestly didn't like the video that much, I watched it right before bed, and fell asleep with ease.
Reneaud was great, he has the greatest style.
nothing really stood out to me. IT was boring, and predictable.
THis is only my opinion.

I got my copy a few days ago and I've only watched it once so far. Like previously mentioned, it's the type of video that gets you hyped to go skate and that's probably the most important function for a skate vid, isn't it?
On the other hand, there's nothing that really stood out for me. Nate Broussard's part I liked the best; the dude just hovers over his board, super smooth and light touch.

But, as for the video.
Some of the music is pretty awful, like Pat Steiners. That song makes me want to slowly die and cut my ears off. And the slow mo shots of buildings gets old. But the skating is sick. Josh did a good job on the skating part, but really needs to work on some of the music used and the buildings.
