"Lilya 4-ever (or Lilja 4-ever) is a 2002 drama film. It is Swedish director Lukas Moodysson's third full length film which marks a sharp change of mood from his previous two films, the uplifting love story Fucking Åmål and the 1970s comedy Together. Lilya 4-Ever is an unremittingly bleak story of the downward spiral of Lilya (played by Oksana Akinshina), a girl in the former Soviet Union, whose mother abandons her to move to the United States. The story is based on the life of Danguole Rasalaite and examines the issue of trafficking in human beings and sexual slavery."

God Grew Tired of Us chronicles the arduous journey of three young Sudanese men - John Dau, Daniel and Panther - to the United States where they strive for a brighter future. As young boys in the 1980s, they had walked a thousand miles to escape their war-ridden homeland, and then had to make another arduous journey to escape Ethiopia.

During the five years they walked in search of safety, thousands died from starvation, dehydration, bomb raids and genocidal murder. Finally, they found relative safety in Kenya’s Kakuma refugee camp. In 2001, 3,600 lost boys, including John, Daniel and Panther, were invited by the United States to live in America. Assisted by Catholic Charities International, the three boys uproot their lives and once again embark on a journey, leaving behind thousands of other refugees who, in the course of their traumatic odyssey, have become their adopted extended family. They must now learn to adapt to the shock of being thrust into the economically intense culture of the United States, learning new customs, adapting to new and strange foods, and coping with the ordeal of getting and keeping a job, or multiple jobs, while never forgetting the loved ones they left behind in Africa. They dedicate themselves to doing whatever they can to help those they left behind in Kakuma, and to discovering the fate of their parents and family.

Definitely going to check out that Lilja 4-ever movie later.
I'd post something up but I don't think I have obscure enough movie tastes for this thread.

But here's The Science of Sleep, I liked it.

Following the death of his father in Mexico, Stéphane Miroux, a shy insecure young man, agrees to come to Paris to draw closer to his widowed mother Christine. He lands a boring job at a calendar-making firm and falls in love with his charming neighbor Stéphanie. But conquering her is no bed of roses for the young man and the only solution he finds to put up with the difficulties he is going through is escape into a dream world

I think it could easily be criticized for how predictable the plot is, everything is pretty obvious. It was really well done in all other aspects though, I enjoyed it a lot.

Here's one of my favourites.

Synopsis: Kinji Fukasaki's explosive drama takes place early in the new millennium, with Japan on the verge of societal collapse. When even the schoolchildren begin to abuse the system, the government introduces a strict new punishment whereby a randomly chosen group of students are taken to a desert island and forced to fight each other to the death. Based on Koushun Takami's novel, the film stars famous Japanese author and actor Takeshi "Beat" Kitano.

Zia (Patrick Fugit), distraught over breaking up with his girlfriend, decides to end it all. Unfor- tunately, he discovers there is no real ending, only a run-down afterlife that is strikingly similar to his old one, just a bit worse. Discovering that his ex-girlfriend has also “offed” herself , he sets out on a road trip, with his Russian rocker friend, to find her. Their journey takes them through an absurd purgatory where they discover that being dead doesn’t mean you have to stop livin’.

I just watched science of sleep. I really like the whole idea of it and how he transfered his dreams into real life. I found the end very inconclusive. Maybe I just missed something.

It seems like it falls victim to the indie movie trend where it has to have an inconclusive ending that in theory should make you think, but more often than not confuses the hell out of you.

Oh my god this sounds fucking intense. I'm gonna watch this for sure later.

So far I've watched Funny Games and Lilja 4ever. Funny Games was alright, but I really loved Lilja.
Yeah, I mean, you did pretty much know what was going to happen, but a movie doesn't need to have a surprise ending for it to be a good movie.
I downloaded a torrent of Oldboy a couple days ago, I'll try and upload it.
Google video seems to hate me, so no promises, but I'll try my best.
But yeah, great thread.

Here's a pretty universally loved movie, another favourite of mine for sure.

Brazil, 1960's, City of God. The Tender Trio robs motels and gas trucks. Younger kids watch and learn well...too well. 1970's: Li'l Zé has prospered very well and owns the city. He causes violence and fear as he wipes out rival gangs without mercy. His best friend Bené is the only one to keep him on the good side of sanity. Rocket has watched these two gain power for years, and he wants no part of it. Yet he keeps getting swept up in the madness. All he wants to do is take pictures. 1980's: Things are out of control between the last two remaining gangs...will it ever end? Welcome to the City of God.

He spoke the voice of the boy. The son of the family. Erm I don´t know what the appropriate word is, but they recorded the movie, and the voice of the actor didn´t have the right accent to match the rest of the family (he spoke some dialect I dunno) and they did a casting and then they chose my brother to dub it (the dictionary says dub, sync, synchronize, choose your word).

Synopsis: Dreams. What are they? An escape from reality or reality itself? Waking Life follows the dream(s) of one man and his attempt to find and discern the absolute difference between waking life and the dreamworld. While trying to figure out a way to wake up, he runs into many people on his way; some of which offer one sentence asides on life, others delving deeply into existential questions and life's mysteries. We become the main character. It becomes our dream and our questions being asked and answered. Can we control our dreams? What are they telling us about life? About death? About ourselves and where we come from and where we are going? The film does not answer all these for us. Instead, it inspires us to ask the questions and find the answers ourselves.

Synopsis: Darren Aronofsky scripted and made his directorial debut with this experimental feature with mathematical plot threads hinting at science-fictional elements. In NYC's Chinatown, recluse math genius Max (Sean Gullette) believes "everything can be understood in terms of numbers," and he looks for a pattern in the system as he suffers headaches, plays Go with former teacher Sol Robeson (Mark Margolis), and fools around with an advanced computer system he's built in his apartment. Both a Wall Street company and a Hasidic sect take an interest in his work, but he's distracted by blackout attacks, hallucinations, and paranoid delusions. Filmed in 16mm black-and-white, the Kafkaesque film features music by Clint Mansell (of the UK's Pop Will Eat Itself band). Shown at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival where Aronofsky won the drama directing award. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

Starring: Sean Gullette, Mark Margolis, Ben Shenkman

synopsis: The massive labyrinthine netherworld that is the Budapest subway system provides the stunning setting for 'Kontroll,' a high-style, high-speed romantic thriller in which the lives of assorted outcasts, lovers, and dreamers intersect and collide. One handsome young hero, one mysterious maiden, and one particularly nasty killer must conduct a race against time, trains, and destiny itself in their frantic pursuit of one another.

doesn't sound too appealing, I know, but it really has a very specific feel to it. Something a lot of movies I saw, before knowing about this thread, lacked. oh yeah, and its a hungarian movie by Nimrod Antal.

When a young woman rejects her current overweight suitor in a restaurant, he unexpectedly places a curse on her. The film then moves on to her sisters. One is a happily married woman with a psychiatrist husband and three kids. Unfortunately the husband develops an unnatural fascination for his 11 year old son's male classmates, fantasizes about mass killing in a park, and masturbates to teen magazines. One of his patients has an unrequited fascination for the third sister. Meanwhile the apparently stable 40 year marriage of the sister's parents suddenly unravels when he decides he has had enough and wants to live a hermit's life in Florida. Obviously, the whole movie is slightly warped in its viewpoint and certainly presents abnormal relationships among all of its parties.

Rancher Dan Evans heads into Bisbee to clear up issues concerning the sake of his land when he witnesses the closing events of a stagecoach robbery lead by famed outlaw Ben Wade. No sooner or later, Wade is captured by the law in Bisbee and Evans finds himself one of the escorts who will take Wade to the 3:10 to Yuma train in Contention for the reward of $200. Evans quest for taking Wade to the station is not only for saving for his land but an inner battle that he can be more than just a naive rancher in the eyes of his impetuous and gunslinging son William Evans. The transport to Contention is hazardous and filled with ambushes from Indians, pursuits by Wade's vengeful gang and Wade's own conniving and surreptitious demeanor that makes the ride all more intense.

The Fountatin
Three stories - one each from the past, present, and future - about men in pursuit of eternity with their love. A conquistador in Mayan country searches for the tree of life to free his captive queen; a medical researcher, working with various trees, looks for a cure that will save his dying wife; a space traveler, traveling with an aged tree encapsulated within a bubble, moves toward a dying star that's wrapped in a nebula; he seeks eternity with his love. The stories intersect and parallel; the quests fail and succeed.

Not exactly a movie. But a mini-series that is worth a look on a rainy day. Probably 4-6hrs long.

This documentary series follows actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman on a motorcycle trip around the world. The two friends will travel through such places as Siberia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Alaska, before finally ending the journey in New York. The filming will be done by on board cameras and one ride along cameraman.

anyone who's into silent films, or film making in general this one is a must watch.

battleship potemkin (http://www.archive.org/download/BattleshipPotemkin/Battleship_Potemkin.mpg)

The Battleship Potemkin (Russian: Броненосец «Потёмкин», Bronenosets Potyomkin), sometimes rendered as The Battleship Potyomkin, is a 1925 silent film directed by Sergei Eisenstein and produced by Mosfilm. It presents a dramatised version of the Battleship Potemkin uprising that occurred in 1905 when the crew of a Russian battleship rebelled against their oppressive officers of the Tsarist regime.

Potemkin has been called one of the most influential films of all time, and was named the greatest film of all time at the World's Fair at Brussels, Belgium, in 1958.

88 Minutes

In Seattle, the successful forensic psychiatrist and college professor Jack Gramm is in evidence since he was responsible for the condemnation of the serial killer Jon Forster, influencing the jury to sentence him to the death row. Jon accuses Jack of manipulation, inducing one witness and sister of one of his victims to testify against him. On the eve of Jon's execution, Jack receives a phone call telling him that he has only eighty-eight minutes of life, while a killer is copycatting Jon, killing women with the same "modus-operandi" and is investigated by Seattle Slayer Task Force. With the support of his former wife and associated Shelly Barnes, the FBI agent and his friend Frank Parks and his assistant Kim Cummings, Jack investigate some weird and problematic students, a security guard of the campus and the woman with whom he had one night stand.

After hard years in exile for a crime he didn't commit, Benjamin Barker now Sweeney Todd, returns to London to find his wife dead and his daughter in the hands of the evil Judge Turpin. In his anger, Sweeney goes on a murderous rampage on all London, with the help of Mrs. Lovett, he opens a barber shop in which he lures his victims in with a charming smile before casually ending their life with a flick of his razor across their neck. But not one man killed, nor ten thousands men can satisfy Sweeney's lust for revenge on those who've caused his years of pain.

Kowalski, the hero of the story, works for a car delivery service. He takes delivery of a 1970 Dodge Challenger to take from Colorado to Frisco, California. Shortly after pickup, he takes a bet to get the car there in less than 15 hours. After a few run-ins with motorcycle cops and highway patrol they start a chase to bring him into custody. Along the way, Kowalski is guided by Supersoul - a blind DJ with a police radio scanner. Throw in lots of chase scenes, gay hitchhikers, a naked woman riding a motorbike, lots of Mopar and you've got a great cult hit from the early 70's.

My namesake...

This documentary short, produced for West Virginia public TV's "Different Drummer" series, introduces us to Jesco White, a hard-living, tap-dancing Boone County resident whose repeated run-ins with the law have interfered with his dream of becoming as renowned a "mountain dancer" as his late father, D. Ray White. We meet Jesco's three distinct personalities; the gentle and loving Jesse, the violent and dangerous Jesco, and the extremely strange Elvis. We also encounter various members of Jesco's family, all nearly as eccentric as Jesco himself. You will ask, "Are these people for real?" Yes, they are. "The Dancing Outlaw" was released to videocassette after becoming something of a cult sensation through circulating "bootleg" tapes.

All I could find was this shitty youtube version--my apologies.

In the 1980s, ruthless Colombian cocaine barons invaded Miami with a brand of violence unseen in this country since Prohibition-era Chicago - and it put the city on the map. Sicko:

Documentary look at health care in the United States as provided by profit-oriented health maintenance organizations (HMOs) compared to free, universal care in Canada, the U.K., and France. Moore contrasts U.S. media reports on Canadian care with the experiences of Canadians in hospitals and clinics there. He interviews patients and doctors in the U.K. about cost, quality, and salaries. He examines why Nixon promoted HMOs in 1971, and why the Clintons' reform effort failed in the 1990s. He talks to U.S. ex-pats in Paris about French services, and he takes three 9/11 clean-up volunteers, who developed respiratory problems, to Cuba for care. He asks of Americans, "Who are we?"

Three American brothers who have not spoken to each other in a year set off on a train voyage across India with a plan to find themselves and bond with each other -- to become brothers again like they used to be. Their "spiritual quest", however, veers rapidly off-course (due to events involving over-the-counter pain killers, Indian cough syrup, and pepper spray), and they eventually find themselves stranded alone in the middle of the desert with eleven suitcases, a printer, and a laminating machine. At this moment, a new, unplanned journey suddenly begins.

Watch "Session 9" Movie

well, actually, i found this one just now. seriously, i recomend watching this one.. if you can get over the guy from csi: miami being in it, it is one of the scariest movies i've ever seen. just in the way that its really slow paced and eerie. anyway, still would appreciate if anyone finds Shallow Grave. enjoy.

session 9 is hella creepy. The atmosphere is amazing. Such a great movie.

Another movie that to me was super scary in a similar kind of way was "THE LAST WINTER" Don't know if it's posted anywhere online, but the torrent is out there. Defenitly check it out.

Here's the trailer:

the director was actually charged with murder when the film came out because the italian government thought it was a real snuff film. he had to show them that the actors were still alive before they dropped the charges.

Quote
The phrase Man bites dog and the related phrase Dog bites man are used to describe a phenomenon in journalism, in which an unusual, infrequent event is more likely to be reported as news than an ordinary, everyday occurrence. This can be explained by the fact that the news media generally consider an event more newsworthy if there is something unusual about it. On the other hand, a situation which is commonplace is unlikely to be taken as newsworthy. The result is that news items carrying titles such as "Man Bites Dog" occur more often than those such as "Dog Bites Man," making it seem as though the former event is more common compared to the latter than it actually is.

Similar phrases related to this analogy include, You never read about a plane that did not crash, or You don't hear about the laws that a politician did not break.

Untraceable

A secret service agent, Jennifer Marsh, gets caught in a very personal and deadly cat-and-mouse game with a serial killer who knows that people (being what they are - both curious and drawn to the dark side of things) will log onto an "untraceable" website where he conducts violent and painful murders LIVE on the net. The more people who log on and enter the website, the quicker and more violently the victim dies.

I've never seen a movie with less emphasis on the story, but I'll summarize. Clive Owen's character 'Smith' happens upon a pregnant woman being chased by Hertz's (Giamatti) gunmen. He assists her in delivering the baby, and fights his way out. He has to ensure the kids' safety, so he drags Monica Bellucci into helping him. It knows exactly what it is, and it's probably the most ridiculous action movie I've seen. All kinds of creative deaths, it's an entertaining watch.

The Weatherman group had long held that militancy was becoming more important than nonviolent forms of anti-war action, and that university-campus-based demonstrations needed to be punctuated with more dramatic actions, which had the potential to interfere with the U.S. military and internal security apparatus. The belief was that these types of urban guerrilla actions would act as a catalyst for the coming revolution. thanks for this...its pretty wild! I can't believe how un-advanced we were technologically, the FBI in 2008 would be able to take something like that down in a week or two. I was also surprised how educated some of those Panthers sounded...the sixties really were a much different time. I'de say the cultural revolution failed, or the war was won by the corporate, backwards pigs. Our generation is so dumbed down, and this doc just made that so much more apparent to me.

When I was in high school I had to go to this turtle autopsy for marine biology. It was horrible. I was seriously standing like 5 feet away from people twisting the turtles head off and shit. Some girl next to me passed out, and the "scientists" were just like hacking away with machetes. Shit was fucked. The main song in Cannibal Holocaust is my fucking jam though. That kind of effected how I felt about some of the more violent scenes where that song was playing. I was way too busy jamming to that song instead of puking.

yeah it's no wonder why the movie is banned in some countries, the dude had some of the actors go into hiding almost for a year so people thought they actually died.

i'm pretty sure all the animals killed in that movie are legit (88% sure)

and the mud/stick rape scene was freaking disturbing.

yeah they actually killed the animals. and the director was actually put on trial in Italy on suspicion of murder because the court thought the scenes were so realistic. He had to produce the actors in court before they would drop the charges.

i don't see why it's so good. i guess the story was ok. it was pretty graphic, but i didn't have any problems sitting throught the whole thing. i was actually kind of bored and just wanted the movie to be done with. it's kind of fucked up, but the animal butchering was just that...butchering. same shit happens for the meat that we eat.

that turtle thing was kind of gross though. i'd probably get sick if i saw and smelled that in person. i've seen my grandfather cut a chicken's head off. and i've caught and gut fish. shits still moving in those when you cut into them. but that turtle was just a big mess of nasty.

....am i just really fucked up?

Nah, I think it just got kind of overhyped. It took me two days to commit to watching it, I thought I was going to be scarred for life. In reality, it's just a horror movie from the 70's. I like the point that they tried to make though, where maybe the cannibals weren't really the bad guys afterall. How touching.

pretty good advice with the cookies, thanks.

I don't see why you would want to remake the "Let the right one in" movie. It says they're doing a US remake in 2010. I already found the Funny Games remake to be not so overwhelming, but with this movie I don't see what you could do better.

For real I just watched the Swede one, and I agree completely. I guess there are some things in the book that aren't really covered in the movie, but from the sounds of it they're pretty explicit so I doubt an American remake would dare to touch on them. America needs good horror movie writers desperately, they keep butchering other countries' movies.

I went and saw "Seven Pounds" at the theatre tonight, I'd say it was one of the better films of this year for sure. Very well done and not too predictable. Lacked a Jazzy Jeff cameo though.
