Title: Josh Kalis appreciation.
Post by: Ronald Wilson Reagan on February 03, 2009, 12:33:49 AM
The guy is amazing. Kalis does every trick perfectly and with the most insane pop. Whoever started the mindfield thread predicted Kalis' part would be amazing still ten years from now. I bet it will. Look at the parts below, all timeless. No matter how many people skate, and no matter how much progression occurs, seeing Kalis do a 360 flip on flat will always be amazing. He rips everything everywhere, coast to coast and across the world.
In my opinion, Josh Kalis' name should be right up there With Koston and Reynolds. He's been around forever and his skating has aged like a fine midwestern cheese. Not only that, from what I have seen, the dude is still a genuine skaterat.
video evidence.

Check out the kickflip at the end. The best kickflip EVER.

switch backtail hubba.

Classic part. the fakie flip he does on that line at that waterfront spot in NYC is amazing. Not very often I am amazed by a flatground trick.

This part redefined what I thought about him.
So many more parts too- dc, toy machine, uprise, etc.

I like what Josh said about Jerry Hsu's Curtains:

"Ain't no Jerry Hsu"
Which, meant that Jerry was performing an excellent maneuver.

This brings me to my next point, I like how he hasn't changed his style once.

when i was younger i went to a dc demo in a parking lot and kalis was there. this kid i knew from around my area was there too. kalis was trying to tre flip over this box so he was starting way back and into the crowd. he was kinda taking it slow on the attempts so this kid came up to him trying to be some fucking funny jack ass. he asked kalis if he could try a trick on his board, kalis said yes. the kid grabbed his board started doing some goofy ass walk and then rolled on his back and turned it in to some ol crazy legs break dance shit and then popped it up into a boneless and landed right in front of kalis' grill and started laughing. kalis of course was on some pro status respect shit and started going off on this guy "you think this shit's a game? you think what i'm out here doing is for your amusement? this is my fucking job and you're going to disrespect me like that? what are you? 15? i'm going to find some 15 year old before this demo's over with to come beat the shit out of you" ......the kid kinda gets shook and snickers a bit as kalis walks off...i guess kalis hears him and comes back looks him in the face then up and down, looks at the fools shoes, and then spits on the kids shoes and walks away" and it's funny as fuck because on a completely different note that kid and another kid got into a fight about a girl. and the kid that tried to play kalis got his nose busted open and every went running to kalis to tell him...all g'd out as fuck kalis didnt laugh or anything just said "yeah i knew that little prick was going to get what he deserved" and proceeded to go off and try and back tail the top of the bench. this kid hasn't skated in years and still gets dissed with that shit.

story time eh?
Wilson park in Chicago, my friend breaks his board and Kalis is there and sees him. Kalis asks him, "what trick you learn lately?"
"360 flips."
"Do one first try on my board."
My friend tries it once, lands on it, but falls off. Kalis says it was close, and gives him a rebate.
"Try once more." My friend lands it. "Hold on, I'll be right back"
Kalis goes to his car and comes back with a deck and gives it to my friend.
Different type of story, still a rad guy

Kalis was usually really cool when he lived in Dallas but did act like a dick sometimes mainly due to the influence of some of the guys he hung out with.  This was right before and a bit after he turned pro.

Later on we got the feeling he was bummed on his crew because he would give them boards or send them boxes and they would just sell the stuff.  Basically the guys he skated with stopped skating and sold the product he was giving them thinking they were skating it.

All that aside there's plenty of stories of him like The Gipper stated.

One time I showed up at Jeff Phillips Skatepark and he was in the parking lot asking anyone for Thunders since he was headed to Houston and his package didn't arrive in time.  He comes up and asks me if I have any, which I just happened to buy a new pair of that day, so he then says he'll trade me.  He went out of his way and gives me a brand new pair of eS Accels, spitfire wheels, spitfire shirt, tons of stickers, bearings, and says he'll give me another set of wheels next time.  I of course traded him but didn't plan on or worry about getting any wheels since he already gave me a shitload of stuff.

About a 2 weeks later I see him and he comes up and says thanks for the trucks but they didn't work out cuz they were 147 Hi and he skates the 145 Lo.  However, he said he remembers saying he'd give me another set of wheels which he gives me right there.  Pretty cool since around that time he was known to be hit and miss on whether he'd be cool or a dick to people.

He was 19 or 20 at the time so I just chalk it up to being young and having some thuggish friends.

He's in my top 5 of street skaters.  Totally raw and one of the few who can wear sweatpants and bulky shoes and still make it look good.

I remember that demo too.  Dyrdek did some good stuff as well but Kalis killed it.  I remember he switch b/s flipped one of those thigh high barriers like 2nd try.  AVE was there but he just stood there by the bus and didn't skate at all.  This was right after he cut his hair short, started wearing dickies, and people got the first sightings of his sleeved out arms.  He was in all black sitting by himself and I don't think anyone asked for an autograph or bothered him because the kids were probably just scared of him.

The DC rep is one of my friends and told me later that AVE didn't really ever speak to anyone on the tour bus and he was "going through some stuff".  It was obvious by looking at him that he didn't want to be there.  Ended up being not long after that he went sober.

Post by: SFblah on February 04, 2009, 11:34:34 PM
Haha, yea him and his friends stole all kinds of stuff.  I think he was part of the group that got that guy Dreads stoned as shit one night while he was working the midnight shift back when the park was 24 hours.  Anyways, they got Dreads stoned and drunk so he passed out and they took everything from the shop that wasn't nailed down.  He woke up and I heard he had no idea wtf happened but all the boards and other hardgoods were gone and only the old school boards were still there.  I don't know how he explained that to the kook ass owner (Not Jeff Phillips because after he died it became Rapid Revolutions but we refuse to call it that).

The new owner was a rollerblading hippy who lived inside the park above the shop in a tent where he built a loft.  He was bald with a massive beard that he had braided chimes into. Fucking chimes!!  Everyone would be skating and he would walk through the middle of the park playing a flute competely oblivious to all the people skating.  He also would let his dog shit wherever it wanted.  We showed up one day after school hyped to skate the mini and his dog shit on the flat and no one cleaned it up.

After one of our friends called the city to let them know that someone was living in a commercially zoned area he disappeared, to our delight, only to show up 2 days later and park a mobile home in front of the door and run his fucking septic line through the front door of the park.

The best was when Kalis and them would turn the bowl into a boxing ring on weekend nights when they brought the gloves up there.

This was also around the time Lenny Kirk would show up in Dallas.  He was slightly killing the miniramp one day but I guess a few guys weren't impressed for someone who was supposed to be pro for Alien.  Kalis then let them know that he was skating switch the whole time.

Josh Kalis is the only pro i've ever seen skate in person.  I used to live in northern michigan and would make trips down to grand rapids on the weekends and skate purple east.  Kalis was a regular there at the time.  so many times i would just watch in aw at how fuckin gnarly this guy is.  i remember this one line he did... dropped in on the big quarter, kickflip the table top, hit the steap bank and snap the hugest nollie flip ever, like shoulder height, and come back and switch big heel the table top.  the dude's pop is unbelievable.  such a cool guy too.

you know how when you are a little kid and you just put up like random pictures from magazines on your wall, anyways, I made a whole section of my wall dedicated to kalis. It was sick. I can still remember the reflex bearing ad where he was doing a switch front crook on a handrail. That was the centre piece. So sick!

A lot of white skateboarders tried skateboarding in baggy clothing.

Most of them looked like fucking wade des shito, or des dicko, or des vagino, or whatever the fuck his name is - bad luck if you actually had a chance to witness a supreme WIGGERSHIP at it's highest point.

A few white skateboarders in baggy clothing actually look good. Kalis is one of the best. Smooth style, good tricks.

And never a fucking doo rag and a chain. No bullshit, just a proper looking skateboarder.

Fuck, here I am, a 69 - year old loud farting in public person, typing all kinds of senseless and useless shit about some guy pushing a piece of wood on four wheels, making it all look like he's a person REALLY worth typing about or ever speaking of.

I just typed a whole bunch of letters about a skateboarder. Not about a doctor, a scientist, or a teacher.

But about a fucking skateboarder.

Time to get a life.

And stop playing with my right hand.

P.S

I killed my wife last month and I raped my dog in the ass, so dog stopped barking. Now my dog is really laid back. AND MY FUCKING WIFE IS COOL AS ICE! ICE - ICE BABY! YES!

I also attach the photo of my new lover below. We used to sleep together, but he left to Afghanistan to sell his kidney and his anal to the Afghani government, so they can create a clone of a REAL PROUD AMERICAN! I mastrubate every ten minutes since my boy left. My love is gone.

APPRECIATE ME, YOU DIRTY SERVANTS! CREATE A TOPIC ABOUT YOUR EMPEROR, STOP CREATING TOPICS ABOUT SOME FUCKING PEASANTS.

i was in philly in 98, walking around south street tripping on some acid i got from a white dread that was sleeping in a graveyard... I walk up to sub zero, buy a big brother magazine, and im looking at the first page with a dc ad introducing the lynx... Kalis doing a huge 360 flip... Look up and motherfucker is sitting right there on the curb with ryan gee.  Sat and talked to him, stevie(who was inside looking like a wu member... Gold fang fronts and shit) and gee for over an hour.  Hardflipped his board, he gave me a workshop prototype that he said was too big for him(7.8 i think) amd asked if i wanted to ride out to nyc with them on a filming misson for some tws vid.  Fucking blew my mind... Nicest, realest dude ever... No pro ego, just a humble skate rat.  Kalis will always have my respect, and in my mind is what a pro skater should be.

What sponsors did Kalis have in the late 90s besides AWS and DC?
Same for Dill, if anybody knows.
