Title: Skating with an iPod - yay or nay?
Post by: Mullet Man on February 09, 2009, 08:12:14 AM
Totally lame and rude or fun as hell?

if you're skating all by yourself its cool, but its annoying as hell if you're skating in a group and you have to keep yelling at your homies.

i always skate with one and if it's in a way that's rude to you, then i don't know you anyway so why would you care?

if i go to the park without one then apart from not having tunes you have to deal with all the people who are feeling uncomfortable (under 13 or over 31) starting conversations with you while you're trying to skate.

True!

if you stay skating, you never have that problem.
i don't even own an ipod but i don't find it that hard to avoid talking to people.
i just say, "i'm not trying to be rude but i'm trying to skate right now".
if they got a problem with that then its not worth talking to them in the first place.

yeah but if they are lurking where you're starting then you're coming right back to where they are and i'll usually just end up getting annoyed and going skate something else when that happens so they effectively chase you off unless you vibe them. why deal with the hassel when i can get tunes and the added benifit of some privacy.

I always skate with my ipod. Homies or no homies. I do take it off during the sesh cause after awhile. And you can't compare skating and basketball. Of course you can't play ball with headphones on cause you gotta pay attention to your tram and the other tream. Skating you just focus on your board.

Yes if I'm skating from A to B by myself, No way during a session with others. A lot of my friends hardly ever skate without an ipod and it's annoying as fuck trying to speak to them...

haha, i see your point.  if they're just standing there waiting where you're starting, they obviously don't want to skate the first place and they'll rope you into a convo the first chance they get.
but really, i just stay moving when i go skating, i rarely stop and if i do its usually away from everyone else.
i'm friendly for the most part but i keep the convos to a minimum even with the people like i skating with.
i prefer bullshitting after the session, when i'm totally relaxed with a beer in hand.

if i'm using my board as a mode of transportation, not doing any sort of tricks i'll use my Ipod.  if i'm skating at a spot or at the park even by myself i will not have my Ipod on me.

Never..
I remember one time I was with some friends downtown and 2 were wearing headphones and the other 3 "including myself" were not.
A security guard kicked us out so the 3 of us were leaving and our 2 other friends didnt hear him..
needless to say the 2 of them got grabed by the guard as he tried to stop them

pretty dumb but still

Also, I don't know how many times I've had to tell some dipshit to stop standing in the way or sitting on the ledge only to have them be skating with their iPod and be oblivious.

Or, playing skate and you say, "It's your turn", 3 times only to have them pull one earpiece out and go, "What?".  Ugh!

I usually roll up to the park with a crew 50 deep and only 4 skate, Famous x DVS Boombox in hand blastin Wu-Tang all day if someone complains I smack them then go around chanting "I like it raw." for bout 10 mins then I throw in my iPod and blast Doggystyle while nodding and pretending to know what my Kr3w is talking about.

can't stand it. skating itself isn't enough to keep you entertained?

It makes me sound horrible, but i slowed down on skating a lot and lost quite a bit of interest with it while i was ipodless for 6 months. I guess having a background beat to my skating was just enough to take me out of the grim reality that is skating prefab parks. As sleazy mentioned, fuck most of those conversations and i find music a great way to get stoked on a day where youre not completely feeling skating. Im biased because i have to rely on transit a lot, so portable music has been a bit of a way of life for me for a while. ill always grab my ipod before my wallet. The anti earphone people do have good points though. I try to keep it at half volume if im skating a park because it is hard to maintain etiquette when you cant hear jack shit and for the love of god dont ever film with headphones or hide it well.

Ipod people suck.  They get in the way and dont realize whos around them since they cant hear anything.  There no vibe from them either, put the head phones down and talk to/get psyched on your friends

i hate it but only because i dont have an ipod.

I have a feeling that's what most people's real reason is.

Unless I'm supposed to believe that people have these important conversations that need to go down, uh, during a skate session. What exactly do you dudes need to talk about? It must be important, because you seem bummed out because of this apparent lack of conversation. Maybe something like this:

"Yeah Erik Ellington, that was a sick big spin you just did over that Carlsbad gap, but FUCK YOU! I really needed someone to talk to. FUCKING iPODS!"

And not only did he get to rock his favorite tunes while floating that big spin, he also got fucked up that night!

I listen to an IPOD when I'm at the skatepark. It's a great motivator.
I try not to be a dick about it.
I hit the pause button when I'm not skating so I can talk to people.
But as soon as I put my board down I hit play.
Some people are regular when it comes to wearing IPODs.
So I understand the hate.

Hey, to each his own.

I kinda used to hate iPods before I had one, but it's become that "I don't know how I lived without it before" item for me. I could live without my cell phone, and maybe even my car, but my iPod gets love every day no matter what.

And skating to your own personal soundtrack is fucking sick. If there's a bad side to it, it's that it makes it too boring to skate without it now.

its cool man, i was just saying.
the main reason i don't want one is the fact that you almost always lose it, break it, or get robbed for it.  i watched my friend spend months uploading music into it only to have lost it 6 months later.  so he got another one and spent months uploading music all over again(he didn't back it up), finding tracks online, borrowing albums after album from friend after friend, only to have it break on him.
the amount of stress and possibility of stress just doesn't seem worth it to me, thats really the only reason i don't want one.
besides that, i can hear tunes in my head.  you don't know how many times i've had the intro to 411 playing in my head when i'm rolling up to hit something.  :P

I agree completely with those two statements.

For anyone considering getting one but are afraid of breaking it or getting it stolen buy a Ipod Shuffle

The things are practically indestructable and under 50 bucks.
I keep mine clipped to my front pocket and I have done more that few nose dives at the park.
Hell, the other day the thing fell off of me and a kid ran over it and it still works fine.

my shuffle has a dent in it, is scratched up to shit and i think it's been washed also and that ho still works and they only cost 50 bucks

plus like you said, anytime you see someone you want to talk to near by you just pause and then when you throw down you play.

i used to use a jambox but it's just too awkward unless you know everyone at the spot so i definitely prefer ipod but if i had a backyard ramp, it'd be jam box all the way.

PS. I found the Carroll quote about skating and iPods

Q   - "Do you ever skate with headphones on?"

MC - "Fuck that! Maybe if I was by myself. When someone throws the headphones on its like they're saying "I'm not skating with you." Shit’s hella rude!"

Again, Ellington is clearly wearing an iPod while doing the gnarliest hammer in his part in Baker 3.

No friends? Rude? Dangerous? He doesn't enjoy the noises of skating? Possibly... but very very unlikely.

Or does he (gasp!) just like to hear music while he's skating? Hmmmm...

I'm sure it's nothing more than that. And if it's good enough for that gnarly motherfucker, then it's good enough for me. I'm sure exactly NONE of you would call him out in person for wearing an iPod. Or any other pro for that matter. So it's pretty weird how it bums some of you out. But whatever!

yeah but hes throwing down a  hammer, he's not just with the crew and  chillin and fooling around. Obviously the music is better then trying to strike up a conversation while trying the trick  "Oh yeah man so I was totally chillin with the bros and we were getting bored so I was like....."  "brb big spin LOLOLOL" as he lands and rolls away "were getting fucked up tonight!!"

Listening to an iPod while skateboarding, around friends, is pretty scummy.

Listening to an iPod while skateboarding is personal. I don't want to get hit by a car so I don't listen to music. Also, I seem to learn new tricks quicker, if I don't have any music. But, that varies by person.

The sound of my skateboard is the best type of music. There's no cord.

There's no cord.
where the fuck do you live to where you always have to be on the lookout for cars? are there no spots behind buildings and shit where no cars come? i skate with music when i'm trying something that can psych me out, but i usually don't. i'll admit that it's anti-social when you're just messing around with friends, but not when you're trying something hard that you're not so confident in.

Like I said, it's personal when it comes to listening to music. It works for you and like a lot of other people. As far as the car thing, it's pretty much any spot that's not in the skate park. I can't really find any good spots unless I drive around so I'll usually cruise and skate curbs and benches around my subdivision.

When I skate to work I wear headphones. But skating with people I never wear headphones that shit is lame as fuck. If I want to hear music while skating with a crew, thats why we've got cars and boom boxes. Crank that shit up so everyone can enjoy.

Skating  by myself, definetly i never blast it loud enough so i cant hear my board though its usually just ambiance to my skating to help keep me concentrated.

IF im skating with homies, sometimes ill rock the ipod but again music is usually turned down a bit, or i rock the one head phone, fucks up the equilibrium sometimes but its completely better then repeatedly having to say "what" when someone talks to you, theres nothing worse than that. Sometimes ill forget to bring my ipod or something and it wont be the end of the world either, i dont completely rely on it to skate but sometimes it nice to have biggie or some ghostface blasting in your ear when your shredding.

I doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that people may want to talk to you at a skatepark so perhaps take out an earbud when your not rolling.

Why not, instead of talking... just skate? You should try it - it's way funner that way!

But whatever!

i highly doubt ellington has any friends besides his dumb baby and jim greco

I'm not bummed at all - people can do what they want, obviously. It's just that it blows my mind that the main beef with skating with an iPod is because it makes people harder to talk to. I don't want to talk to you when I'm skating. I want you to shut the fuck up when I'm skating. I don't care what you have to say. I'm skating. Whatever it is can fucking wait.

Is this not an understandable approach? Should chit-chat take priority? I fucking hope not.

I think bull shitting with friends while skating is a good part of the fun. Not talking about asking them how many times they fucked this or that girl while they are trying a trick. Just when people are chilling or waiting while other people are skating the spot. Or if you are skating around the city and just going to random places its good to be able to call out a spot or let someone know they are about to get hit by a car etc.

I was at a bar with some friends, and my board was sitting there. I got up to take a leak. When I emerged, all my friends had gotten up and left, and my board was GONE.

just because random people are in a bar doesnt make them your friends. its sad that you couldnt put 2 and 2 together there billy. your hair/nick still isnt funny.

I love a good solo sesh with some good music.
A busy park full of tards wearing headphones can be a bit trying at times.

That's equal part funny and creepy.

Yeah, you got me. I have no friends. You are totally not creepy and brilliant at ascertaining random facts about strangers on the internet. You have the time.

Or maybe, rather than listening to my people yap while I'm skating, I'd rather just listen to the Geto Boys. And maybe, making stuff up about me just because you don't agree with me is some goofy middle school girl-ish shit. But hey, what else are you supposed to do? Man up? Psssh, yeah right.

Be proud! I'm loving how this is totally beyond you.

p.s. Shut the fuck up when I'm trying to skate. This isn't crystal meth, this is skateboarding.

Skateboarding to me is about turning up to a spot and talking about how good someone's style looks, or about about tight someone else's trucks are, or about if I have a lighter, or if my opinion about how well dude A landed his nollie heel fakie on the bank was, or if I know if the shop around the corner is still open and selling sandwiches, or if I know where dude got his board from because it wasn't from the usual shop, or where there's a good party happening tonight, or if the guy stood on the deck has a lighter because some litle bastard stole mine, or if I can have a swig of your water, or if I can ask 'where did you get that board from, I've never seen that before', or 'shit, I think if you move your feet a little bit to the right you'll be able to nail that easy'.

Skatepark banter is brilliant. You might make new friends, or you might find out new things about people you know and love. Skating around with your headphones on not speaking to anyone just gets you a reputation for being a cock around my my way. Just saying.

I used to listen a lot then just stopped caring about it. Like i used to listen to it when at skateparks whenever, then it turned into at the skatepark when i wasnt planning on meeting anyone there or going with anyone. Never listen to it while skating/reaking havoc around town.
