Title: Da Camping Thread
Post by: All Hail Wu Welsh on May 19, 2009, 03:03:23 PM
I don't know if there has been a thread dedicated to camping yet or not, so I figured I'd start one to discuss our adventures in the wilderness and other things involving camping.  I'm also looking for a good camp site with some sweet sweet cliff jumps in the New York area for this summer, any of you upstate or PA pals got any suggestions.

I'm a big fan of The North Face jackets and camping gear. I don't personally ever go camping though.

Fuck I was in Helen a few years ago in that river sitting in an inner tube and got bit by a water snake. For such a goofy-ass place I guess Helen is pretty dangerous.

I just got back from an amazing trip through northwest Australia.  two week of four wheel drive through remote national parks.

I'm digging this out from the grave - Who likes camping here? Slight twist on the title... what's your favorite national park?

Prior to COVID-19, I tried to go camp once a month in small campgrounds around Ventura and Santa Barbara county. Camping on the beach sucks but it's nice at night.

Twice a year, I try to hit major national parks on the west. Yosemite, Sequoia, Grand Canyon and Monument Valley.

Out of all the places I've stayed, Monument Valley was the most peaceful and breathtaking place I've ever been.

Where I'd like to go between 2020-2022:
-Yellowstone
-Glacier
-Crater lake

Backpacking and kayak camping.  had a bunch of trips planned here in the southeast but they are delayed now.  hoping to paddle a river near here for about a week though soon.  there shouldn't be a lot of human contact since I believe my kayak is big enough to carry everything.

Was hoping to go camping in Zion in May during a cross country trip but that’s obviously not happening. Got a bunch of camping stuff recently which I haven’t gotten to use yet. Hoping there are still places I can camp safely however in the coming weeks.

Never been camping for real but I love cottages and RVs. I'm kinda scared of bears and wolves and not having a shower with hot water

fakie nollie you ever camp at Cachuma Lake or Casitas Lake? What about Leo Carillo?

Cachuma is the go to for my family, decent sized lake(for socal) up in Santa Barbra mountains. All the guys in my extended family get together once a year, spend a week camping and have a fishing tournament/horseshoe tournament once a year. This year is supposed to be our 40th annual (if the lake is opened back up by June).  Right now its only open for the day, till the lockdown is over.

My cousin lives in Ventura and is at Casitas all the time, its only like a 15 minute drive.  He keeps his boat docked there and fishes every weekend.  I don't go to Casitas as much, it's hard to fish that lake and have never had much luck there.  They do have a nice campground though.  I would rather drive the extra 40 minutes too Cachuma

Leo Carillo has the nicest beach camping around Malibu/Ventura area.  Its right across PCH in a little canyon at the foot of the Santa Monica mountains(but in walking distance to the beach) so its not like beach/in the sand camping.  Always had fun times camping there. Tasty waves, caves to go exploring in, hiking and tidepools.  Its so hard to get a camping spot there, you have to plan like 6 months in advance and than they are all reserved within like 15 minutes. Thats why I havent been there in like 10 years.

Nothing beats a camping/skate road trip. Camp at a new spot each night and hit up various parks/spots during the day. Do a little swimming and fishing too. Montana is my favorite place for this. Lots of fun parks even in super remote locations (thanks Evergreen!) and tons of free camping.

I like primitive/dispersed camping best. Way up forest service roads in national forests, water management areas, out on BLM land, fishing access areas, that kind of thing.

National park campgrounds usually feel too crowded to me. It's pretty easy to find much mellower places to camp in surrounding national forests and then pop into the national parks during the day. There are some phenomenal free campsites near Grand Teton as well as near the north, northeast, and west entrances to Yellowstone.

Next up on my list is a trip through the southwest. I really want to do Utah's national parks, Great Basin in Nevada, Monument Valley, Mogollon Rim, and Sedona. I'd also love to check out Big Bend in Texas if I have enough time.

I think my dream camping trip is a big loop through western Canada...Vancouver Island up to Whitehorse (maybe a side trip to Haida Gwaii) then on the Liard Highway over to Yellowknife and then down to Banff. Would need at least a month for this one. Hope to do this in the next few years.

Cachuma is my go-to as well. Get's pretty breezy in the afternoons but, if you come prepared, it's a great little escap. I never stay at Casitas because it feels too close to home and I'm not big on the general area surrounding... may be a stigma of growing up around here.

+1 on Leo Carillo but you gotta be crazy proactive on getting a spot there. I live 10 minutes away from there. I haven't camped there for years though because of how far in advance you have to book.

Slightly north of Carillo there's Sycamore Canyon. Typically has open spots, wonderful hiking trails throughout and has beach access. Only issue is, being a canyon, it can get breezy. Also, if it's high-tide, you have to run across the PCH to get to the beach.

What gear did you get?

I've used the same simple setup forever and have always been happy with it. But I've just recently gotten kind of into checking out new gear and now want a new tent, sleeping bag, stove, etc for whenever camping is back on.

I like to go camping for a week or two at a time, so I've also been somewhat interested in a simple portable power and solar panel setup like the stuff from Goal Zero.

Like I said I was planning a cross country trip this may since I'm moving from coast to coast. Figured the best/ cheapest way to do this would be to camp along the way. Over the past year been checking rei for sales and been able to procure some decent stuff for relatively cheap.

Scored Rei's quarter dome 2 sl tent, got an rei blow up sleeping pad at a garage sale, and found a Kelty cosmic 20 degree sleeping bag on sale on backcountrys website. Also the company outdoor vitals was doing a give away, all you had to do was pay shipping and they'd send you a blow up camping pillow. Picked up a few other odds and ends that I don't recall off hand.

Still have to move but was able to push it back till the end of may in the hopes that it would be a bit safer due to the virus. Also bought a jetboil and some meals so I can cut down on my interaction with people on the trip. Not sure about where would be open along the way, so if any of you have any recommendations on places to camp that would be helpful.

Sounds like you came up on a lot of good deals for quality gear.

Buy a tent that can be set up quickly. I had a great tent that was roomy but took 5-10 min for two people to set up. In that time depending where in the country you are you could get eaten alive by mosquitoes.

Get a one person like this: https://www.outdoorresearch.com/us/catalogsearch/result/?q=Bivy

And an inflatable pad to get you off the ground or you’ll wind up soaked in the morning from condensation. To me, a tent is just for sleeping. Let your homies set up large tents and visit to play cards or whatever.

I felt the same way until I got rained-in one winter and was stuck in a small tent for 14 hours, from 6a-8pm.

Unless you're backpacking and need something ultra-light, get something comfortable enough to sit-up in. Depending on your budget, REI tents are excellent and super easy to setup. I recommend the Half Dome 2.

don't buy a bivy unless you love claustrophobia and condensation.  buy a rei tent and an inflatable pad if you are car camping and find some nice state parks.  if you live near one and this all ends you can check the garage sales at rei or their used website. if you are getting into backpacking it is a whole different thing but not really that complicated.  shoutout r/ultralight

Theres also a ton of gear review videos on youtube if you're bored and willing to go down that rabbit hole. Seems like you can get relatively inexpensive ok camping gear on amazon if youre cool with supporting them right now.

How is the sky there at night? As dark and beautiful as they say it is? I heard it's one of the darkest skies on the shore in SoCal. I wanted to go there for the meteor shower a week or so ago but k ew it was closed so....

You ever been freestyle camping? Not at a campsite but just out in the woods?

Yep - the infamous Jalama Burger is located on the north side of the parking lot:
http://jalamabeach.com/restaurant.html
The food, in combination with the scenery, makes the windy drive worth it.

Light pollution is super minimal around the area, with the closest "city" being Lompoc. However, being on the coast in such an exposed area, it's hard to catch an evening without overcast conditions. See the map below:

Red flags I have about Jalama:
- From what I remember, it's first come first serve and no reservations. I've driven 2 hours at 1am to get a spot on a Wednesday just to be told I can only park for the day. If this happens, a good backup to sleep at is Gaviota (Look at map, most east point).
-There's 0 cell service. Some like it, some don't. I love it
-Walking south of the camping area, the tide can put you in some sketchy situations. Read tide maps before wandering around
-It's very exposed (Channel Islands do not protect it from wind/weather), so it can get pretty windy. This+camping on the sand= you will have sand in places you didn't imagine possible and will sleep with a shirt over your face. There are cabins available to rent but I'm sure they're both expensive and booked super far in advance
-Being that exposed to the open Pacific, the ocean wildlife is pretty gnarly. Most shark-attacks (great white) happen in that area more often than others in Southern California
-The water is pretty cold throughout the year. Be ready with a 4/3 suit and possibly a hood if you are going to surf there.

All that said, it's a beautiful place. Whether you're going to camp or just for a day trip, check it out.

Thanks, fakie nollie. I really want to go one of these days when it opens back up. I'm situated in L.A. so it's not hard for me to shoot up there. When I first got to LA, I used to take a lot of day trips out to Solvang/Chumash casino (with a stop by the Curch of Skatan of course) and I know Jalama isn't that far out of the way from those places.

I'm a fair weathered camper but just with a tent, sleeping bag and stove you can get a lot done.  I've never felt a need to get a super warm sleeping bag because I only camp in summer.  I always drive so I don't need a super light tent....I think if you're hiking around or in subzero weather, you don't need much.

I think a sleeping pad helps a lot too for comfort.  For winter/cold weather camping it helps keep the heat from being sucked out by the cold ground.  You can get a cheap foam one and it doubles as a seating pad as well.

Come August, after we get settled in the new place, I'm going to take a solo bike camping trip around the county. Lots of climbs from sea level to 3000ft

Any recommendations on camping spots in SW Montana? Been trying to plan a trip out there since before the pandemic started, but Montana is also pretty strict with their official rules for out of towners having to quarantine for 14 days. I’ve definitely seen people taking trips out there recently with no problems though. I wanna go while I’m still not working but don’t wanna pay for any official campgrounds because of the pandemic rules and stuff. Mostly just looking to hit the evergreen parks, is it cool to just camp at the park? Any Montana pals that can give some insight are appreciated

I want to take a car camping trip up Pacific Coast Highway/Highway 1 but I'm debating if it's really worth it at this point. The starting point would be Orange County and my turnaround point would be around Olympia or Seattle. My original plan was to hitchhike it for fun but that pastime is almost impossible to do in the age of COVID.

Never car camped before but it shouldn't be an issue except for buying the necessary gear and finding places to stay overnight. Most of my time would be spent wandering the beaches, bombing mellow hills, and hiking redwood forests. I don't know whats closed or not though, things are not looking bright at all for California. Also half the fun of camping is making friends and chopping it up with the locals over a beer or a joint but is that even a really a thing anymore? I wouldn't want to put others at risk as well.

Anyone else taken this PCH road trip before?

Who has suggestions for a camp cook station/table set up?

keep it simple. after eating you gotta clean up and put everything away in trees and shit anyway because of wild animals

Are you talking like car camping, or backpacking cooking setup?

no matter the offroad excursion, I cannot go without a waterproof power bank, darn tough socks and a headlamp with extra batteries

Car camping for this one. Had a little collapsible table set up for a stove, prep space and hanging some mugs but it’s pretty old and won’t make it another season.

Have this but the hinges on it are giving out.

I love camping but I'm not very hardcore about it. Mostly camp in the bed of my truck since I'm usually bringing a dirt bike or mountain bike when I can.

Did a 2 month solo trip thru the southwest last spring which was amazing.

Also if you are going miles into an area without service I cannot recommend the Gaia GPS app highly enough. You can download maps offline and the positioning still works. You can also use overlays for trails on pretty much any public land so it's easy to find a route out. Saved my ass when my bike ran out of gas in the Prescott NF

Just had to share this inflatable kayak sale:

https://www.jayshop.space/

$99.00 on a 2 person joint!
[close]

Is going cheap on a kayak the best bet?

I got two of those Intex kayaks on sale a year or so before covid. On sale they were super cheap, like $180 for both. Really great kayaks for inflatable. Very versatile for packing in small cars, probably could've fit the single on my bike too.

However they both sprung leaks randomly at the same exact time recently. Should be patchable, but even if not they were well worth it. If anything I think spending more than that would be silly because you're still limited by the physics of the vinyl material. Enough inflations, uv, sand abrasion, salt water, etc will cause failures in any inflatable.

Anyways, favorite spot was tomales bay north of SF and Point Reyes. It feels like you're on the ocean but it's very protected. Cool islands in the middle, beaches on the far side. Just far enough paddling across to feel like you're actually getting out into the wild, without having to get crazy tired.

Otherwise had some sketchy trips because we didn't check the tide/wind at china camp, and also a cool inlet at point Reyes. China camp was the longest, hardest one mile of my life trying to get back.

bump

picked up this big agnes mystic UL 15 earlier this year for a great price. it's my first 'real' sleeping bag and I have loved it. it has the sleeping pad 'locking' system with the stretch net material on the bottom so I can slide the corners of the sleeping bag over the corners of the pad to prevent rolling off. its super warm and packs down pretty small. haven't done much backpacking, mostly car camping this year but its kept me super warm and been comfy

Collapsible kettles are good space savers, or just use your pan of course.  A mug with removable coffee filter is good bit of kit, other than the usual stuff

oh the intersecting of two worlds.   way to go on the wind river high route, it always seemed amazing.
I did the first 100 miles of the colorado trail with a friend who thru hiked it.  I only had a week but am sort of glad because he said the rain got really bad and people were getting search and rescued for hypothermia.  and a chipmunk chewed through the shoulder strap of my nashville pack cutaway.

I enjoy ultralight jerk,  there is only so much I can read about fleece on r/ultralight

Spent 8 days in the Port Cartier area next to the Pentecôte River on Quebec's north coast in June on a salmon/brook trout fly fishing mission with my best friend. That's about 800km east of Quebec City, so it's pretty damn deep in the wilderness.

Had a blast, only thing is the mosquitoes were out of fucking control, never seen it this bad.  Whatever deet products we had did not work whatsoever so I just gave up on it by day 2. I came out of there looking like a teen with acne.

Those are the only pictures I have, both our stoned asses forgot to bring a phone charger.

It was quite warm so conditions for salmon were tough, brook trout were a little more active but still not optimal. Nothing stocked here obviously, so it was a nice orange-bellied brookies that are hard to catch.

I used to be department manager of an outdoor gear shop, so I got well equipped for cheap.

a couple favorites from my Wind River High Route trip this past August.

Descending the 'West Gully' off Wind River Peak. A steep and very loose 3rd glass scramble.

Knifepoint Glacier view from atop Alpine Lakes Pass. Narrowly missed the incoming storm on the pass.

Heap Steep Glacier view from Blaurock Pass, a pass you couldn't pay me enough money to ever do again.

anyone got trips planned for the new year?

heading out next week to do the full Georgia (into a bit of North Carolina) section of the Appalachian Trail.

in May i'm hoping to do a skate-packing trip on the Grand-Moab Route, 140 miles of backpacking/skating.

I usually am very diligent in putting my trips on the calendar just so I secure the time on my calendar throughout the year for camping missions.  I find that when I don't do that, weekends will just pass me by and I'll do nothing.
My next one is a spring desert mission here in SoCal to Anza Borrego in early April.  I have to go do Phoenix Am as well and I usually camp on the way there in AZ for a night or two on the way just to get some early season desert stuff but I haven't planned that out just yet.
Anyone in here have a trailer?  I have been camping/backpacking my whole life since I was an infant but now that I'm 50, I was REALLY looking for an alternative to sleeping in a tent and some more comfort.  We got this overland/offroad trailer in late 2021 and it's been so nice.  Queen size bed inside, 2 burner stove outside with a 16Gal water tank, road shower on the side that heats by the sun.  It's got tires and suspension that is just as good if not better than my 4Runner and can go anywhere the rig can.  I've already put it to the test and it's held up amazing.  It really keeps myself and more importantly the wife super comfy so she's 100% down for any missions now.
There's a couple of shots of my setup here in our Baja trip we did over New Years week

id like to own a camper like that one day. my wife and i do a lot of road tripping/camping and for years have just tent camped. something feels so nostalgic about it now tho...being in a campground anywhere now and being in a tent is the minority now a days. i still enjoy waking up in a tent on crisp morning.

I didn't go camping often and enjoyed it, I plan to do it more often. But I don't like sleeping in a tent - basically I didn't get a good night's sleep and the following days of camping didn't go as well as I would like because of my fatigue. You have a nice trailer, I'll think about getting something like that

I’ve got a campsite reserved in Montauk NY the last weekend of April. Montauk is super “exclusive” (ie expensive) these days so camping is one of the only ways most average people can afford to visit, so I’m hyped I got a spot. The site is near some cool surf spots so I really hope we get swell

Does anyone here camp on snowboard trips? It would be really rad to avoid paying for a place to stay but I don’t know how you stay warm. Even in a camper, do you somehow have heat?

Hard to beat "hike in only" camp sites. I live in MN and have a handful of favorites up north. 1-5 miles max, and pure peace and quiet.

We have a newborn baby, so curious to see how this changes things!

So, for those of us above the equator, it's spring. What trips do you all have planned? I scored a permit to go back to the Enchantments in North Central Washington for the first time in six years for August. Going to definitely hit some Oregon coast action and try to get down to Crater Lake at some point because despite having lived in Portland for 20 years, I still have never made the drive down there.

Next month, I'm spending a week to 10 days camping, surfing and skateboarding the lower half of the Oregon coast. I will mostly be in State Park campsites (South Beach Newport and Humbug Mountain near Port Orford).

Probably another camping mish in mid June also but not sure where yet.
