a little bit. if anything, they protect that bone that sticks out. i was skating in cab high tops for a couple months because my ankles were so jacked. now those protect your ankles.

About 3 years ago I tore every ligament and tendon in my left ankle and it has never felt the same since. After any skate session I guaranteed need to eat some aleve and ice it. But with the mids I noticed an improvement at the end of the day. I also rocked the strap for more support, though it seems everyone else who wears the shoes had it dangling about.

They help protect from bumps, but not that much from rolling. I tore ligaments in my ankle and until recently I've skated nothing but Dunk Mids. They are great shoes, but I've gone back to low-top shoes now that I feel comfortable with them again.

Another shoe that had really good support but was low was the P-Rod 1. Too bad they fucked them up with the 2nd and probably the 3rd one.

mid/highs help you ankles!
just depends on the wreck.

You get protected but at the cost of mobility.

Get whatever shoes you want to skate and a cheap ankle brace

If I'm skating mini or just transition in general, I can get away with mids, but for street I have to ride highs. I've had to wear braces on both ankles (while skating) for years... they're both permanently egg'd and shot to shit. If I skate lows with braces (basically the S One's but Ace and Mueller makes some good rigid braces too) I can still roll it.

One weird thing though, since I skate with my feet pretty much immobile (no flick), when I do kickflip variants I have to sort of pop, then quickly step down in the air for the flip. I also noticed that in some cases weird contortions from bailing that might damage my ankles travel up... I'm pretty sure that's why I tore my meniscus a while back (dorking on a little portable rail). I think I would have just rolled my ankle again, but since the brace wouldn't budge, the weight I was putting down settled on the next best joint.

Bah, I fucking hate ankles.

I got clunked in the ankle bone pretty good this morning and thought about this thread. I might try out the J-Lay mids next.

I got bonked on the inner ankle bone yesterday and now the whole ankle is blue. The shitty thing is, not only can I now not skate today, but I have three pairs of hightops at home - I just wasn't wearing any! I was wearing shelltoes, which have the worst ankle support/coverage ever.
