Title: Been playing lots of old school hip hop
Post by: Dr. Evan on June 23, 2009, 02:23:49 PM
I gotta say, EPMD is some sick shit.  Listen to the Strictly Business, Unfinished Business and Business as Usual if you need a reminder to how awesome they are.  Early to mid 90's hip hop is some of the greatest music to come out in my opinion.

Das Efx- Dead Serious
Fu-Schnickens- F.U.

1992 i totally forgot about that Ill Biskits joint..... nice. Here's a slept on record by the crew known as The Dereliks out of SJ, very intelligent lyrics and original production
http://digginmusic.blogspot.com/2005/08/dereliks-turn-on-wheel-is-worth-more.html

I'm a huge Hip-Hop fan, crate digger and beatmaker. Sometimes on here i talk more about music then skateboarding due to all the topics being about The Berrics or who's on a shoe company.

^^^^I know man.....the only reason I mentioned it was because of that "My Style,My Steelo" joint...lots of people still have no idea where that song is from....so I had to put it out there.....and yes, that is the only "good" song on the album...and there is a reason it fades out after the Redman verse....

anyways...I'll list more soon.....I've got a ton of suggestions....stay tuned.

The Beatnuts-Do You Believe?

Haha, that makes me remember when Brian Green from Beverly Hill 90210 put out a rap album. Tre from The Pharcyde did all the production and rhymed on some of the verses, can't really blame him he was probabely getting papes out the ass and it really wasn't that bad...

anyway enough of the celebrity rap...

5 Elementz - The Album That Time Forgot (one of Dilla's first production credits)
The Pharcyde - Labcabincalifornia (you all know the first one but the second one is seriously slept on)
The UMC'S - Fruit Of Nature (silly De La esque backpack rap that'll hit close to home)
Intelligent Hoodlum - Saga Of A Hoodlum

Some newer joints that are highly reccomeneded:
Anything with J Dilla's name on including the '05 beattapes, Slum Village Fantastic Vol. 2, Illa J "Yancey Brothers"
Jake One "White Van Music"
Blu "Below The Heavens" (scorcher...)
14kt - The Golden Hour
Pacific Division - The Blend Tape
U-NI- Fried Chicken and Watermelon

This albums alright, just your standard golden age style but the production is a little muddy.

Gave this a proper listen today. Another favorite among skateboarders and Mike Carroll skated to "Lose In The End"...

Good to see "Where My Mind Is At" mentioned, I listened to that song so much after seeing that video. Definitely going to have to check out a lot of the recommendations in this thread.

Hieroglyphics vs. The Hobo Junction from the mid 90's
This is pretty hilarious. Saafir apparently had a beef with Casual which is what started it all

Tajai sounds like he drank a whole bottle of Henny and happened to pick up a microphone in the process. As much of a Hiero fan as i am, i think Saafir took it

Some slept on 80's shit. Paul C. produced this track and tragically got murdered years later. The best white hip-hop producer ever in my opinion
