Title: Stoner/doom rock
Post by: Ben Throttle on August 22, 2009, 01:17:08 PM
I've been out-of-the-loop for awhile in this genre of music but of course Sabbath and Electric Wizard are amazing.
After some dude called in to Skate Talk and asked what Ethan recommended for good stoner rock he pulled out a vinyl copy of this.

Researched it a bit and found some working links. Equal parts psych rock and metal. It doesn't get much more heavier or dope fueled

Post anything new or old worth listening to that i may not be up on.
Peace

The Gates of Slumber are true doom, they are probably one of the greatest doom bands to come out in the last 10 years.
Saint Vitus - Dying Inside - Oliver's Bar - Indianapolis 1987 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhSdS9tTOFQ#)
And no lover for Saint Vitus shame on all of you.
Props to the guy that posted pentagram.  I would take them over Sabbath any day of the week for being doom metal.  Black Sabbath is to heavy metal then doom.  They were influential to the music but they are not doom.  Trouble, Pentagram, the obsessed, and Saint Vitus are the first doom metal bands.  Also does no one Earthride they are some good stoner

me and my roommate challenged our two friends to a "sabbath banger" contest. we had one month to write and record a black sabbath-y song. you can dl our song here (http://www.mediafire.com/?ew7952p31d6f1rx (http://www.mediafire.com/?ew7952p31d6f1rx)). it's called "yawning portal." hope i don't get flamed too hard for it. we had a ton of fun recording it but our set up was pretty janky and i've never really written this kind of thing before.

I have a chance to go to a big-ass stomer/doom festival in april. Pentagram will be there, but since I'm mostly into their early stuff and I know they've changed a bit over the years, could someone tell me if it's still worthwhile ? Of course, it's pentagram, it's just kickass to have seen them once in your life, but is their show still good ?

They haven't really changed there sound that much.  I think that it still would be worth it.  I wanted to see them with the Gates of Slumber but I had money issues that kept me from going.  There are tons of videos from their last tour on Youtube, sadly they canceled the show they were going to play when they came near my town.

Roadburn?  My friends band is playing the same day at the festival.

If you are needing some Dopethrone style doom, check out a band called Cough and their album Ritual Abuse.

Came through town the other day. Missed them though.

Yup, roadburn. But I'm probably not going, cause you can't go for just one day, you have to buy a ticket for the full festival or else you're not getting in. That ticket costs €150 or something, which I can not afford. I know a guy who's in the festival's organization and maybe he could fix something for us, but he already said even though he tried, there was no chance of it happening.
And I'm not really psyched to go work and save up the €150 to go to a festival for 3 days where I only know 2-3 bands that are coming. I don't doubt that it would be really great, but the money's holding me back. Bummed on missing Pentagram though

How come nobody has said QOTSA?

I don't know too much about doom/sludge stuff, but I always thought Melvins, Kyuss and QOTSA were like the prime examples of Stoner Rock. Well, I guess the new Q not so much, but the older stuff, and a couple of other songs......

1 track, 11 hours 16 minutes and 54 seconds. A bit more on the drone side of things but being stoned certainly enhances the experience

I find myself listening to Lords of Light a lot when baked. I have a lot of friends who can't get into the vocals, but fuck this stuff is awesome. The were sick live too. Try to cop their records if you ever see them used or something:
Lords Of Light - Prog For Camellia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsdwPCIWeEY#)
Lords Of Light - Return of the Lords of Light (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVFVFjJ1EQk#)

Disembowelment and Evoken. Not really "stoner-ish" but fuck it.

Evoken - Descent Into Chaotic Dream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xOuhnwXNsE#)

Putting the new Uncle Acid on now...

It's kinda polished... but I still love those guys.

They also just put their first live shows up on youtube. You still can't see their faces. So rad.

Uncle Acid - Over & over again (Second show live ever!) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MO_VFF6C0I#)

Quality is terrible but I still get chills thinking about how happy I would be to be there. Full boner show.

I felt the need to finally register as a member after reading 6 pages full of great stoner recommendations and not seeing Orange Goblin's name pop up even once. Anyway here's the band that got me into the genre along with Electric Wizard:

It IS a little more polished than I like.? ? that being said, I like that this one isn't immediately as catchy.? ? It's a slow burn and a little darker.? ? Kinda seems more like the type of songs a drugged up Satanic cult of killers would make.

it's an awesome record.  get build on their past two.

Mind Control is good but Blood Lust is so fucking dope I love how the first three tracks feel like a similar riff but played at different tempos. Maybe that's just me.

I was bummed at my first listen, figured that it might just take a bit to get into it (unlike Blood Lust, which I was hooked on immediately), and I was right.  After about 4-5 full plays, I couldn't get enough of it, been the only thing I put on at work this week other than Bongripper's Satan Worshipping Doom going back-to-back.  Good stuff.

Dopesmoker is the ultimate stoner album. Shit is so fucking epic. I  bought both album versions cause I love it so much ... but the green cover is second best.

I have a love/hate relationship with the genre. Black Sabbath was my first favorite band and I love Electric Wizard, Eyehategod, and stuff but I don't smoke and I think the fetishization of weed is particularly corny.

Anyway, this album by EW is underrated and I like it more than Dopethrone.

I agree with FrozenIndustries about the weed fetishization thing it feels vacant and boring... just get high and get on with your day

This band gives me that heroin intoxicated feeling, year's ago I'd bang a few rabbit turds of dope and write a few doom song's and it'd be great.
