Title: an insider prospective on the skate industry
Post by: Chris Franzen on December 15, 2009, 10:45:57 PM
whats up guys. i know i havent been here in a long time and i know that a lot of you probably had questions in the past that i didnt have time to get around to and for that im extremely sorry. i dont have a lot of time with all the new projects and other things i have going on in my life right now so sorry. anyway, i wanted to come here to clear up a few misconceptions that i know a lot of you have about the skate industry. i remember a while back seeing the posts of guys like jamie thomas and henry sanchez and there "exposes" on the skate industry. i want to say that that is not the way shit is. back in my time -- im sure youve all seen my part in the la county vid -- the shit i encountered in skateboarding made me absolutely sick. i was recently talking to a friend about the videos of 2009 and which were best -- it has been a sorry year for videos. anyway, i brought up the aworkshop vid and also the flip vid, which were both terrible. my friend brought up slave and zero. i explained to him that slave and zero are not actually skate companies at all. these are mall apparel companies, just like hollister or abercrombie, and they arent apart of the world of skating and havent been for a long time. even though they make hard goods, so do companies like wal mart. are they skate companies also? no. anyway, i just wanted to throw that out there.

if anyone has any questions or comments, or wants to ask me about what ive got going on now, or anything about the la county video, or anything else, please just drop me a line on here and ill try to respond as much as i can. peace!  -chris franzen, skater in la county video

hey man whats up. first i want to say fuck all haters and naysayers. if you really want to come out here to california to see the industry for what it really is be my guest. next, i want to say that over the span of my career i have done tricks over what a lot of people would consider to be tall stuff -- the trick is basically just to suck your knees up to your chest, and kind of jump forward like you would if you were playing basketball. thanks a lot for the kind words man and keep skating - chris

Also,

My favorite shoe about 8-9 years ago was the Mariano Axions.

I believe you would also agree that shoe was amazing.  Outside of that shoe during that time frame of my skating, my favorite would've been the first Chany shoe from converse.  That shit was indestructible.  Plus, it had ankle bone pads.  That was good for me because my flip tricks have always sucked.

Some people might think I'm being sarcastic, but fuck you!!!!

I also proudly skated these, but I rolled my ankle in them

Try this one: Stick a pickle in a sock or condom. Then titty fuck yourself while you put a bottle of wine in your pussy and fuck that. It's like getting off twice at the same exact time! Or try eating yourself. I'm flexible enough to do this, and nothing tastes better than your own pussy juice! I've also fucked a cordless phone, shampoo bottles in the bathtub, soup cans, pop bottles, and the mouse to my computer.

I masturbate two to four times a day, usually with my fingers, but sometimes I grab a cold carrot and slide it in my ass. I've even rubbed my sister's teddy bear all over my pussy without telling her. It's okay, she does the same with my pillows.

Last time I went to California, I saw the industry, shook its hand, then tried to leave. It tried to rape me.

The industry later bought me flowers and a chocolate cake. I accepted.

Once everyone's finished writing and submitting Franz their questions, we should all do the right thing and offer up our own outsider's amspective on the same topic.

Last night I got really confused, and genuinely believed that manicured bonsai trees were growing around my elbow. And when I tried to scrape them off there was this black tar underneath. I put one of those ankle sprain ice packs under my pillow to keep it cold. And about 4 am I had what I thought was a brilliant idea of nailing brillo pads to a cat scratching post so I could scratch my feet without contorting myself. I don't know where these lice came from, but they are playing tricks with my mind.

Actually, a lot of people would say that there is no such thing as that trick either. I call them nollie frontside heelflips, but don't really care if you say it the other way. But technically, your nomenclature is wrong.

he was saying that theres only one type of cab and its only done fakie, be it 180(half cab) or 360(full cab or caballerial).

when its done nollie, its a FS nollie heel or a nollie FS heel depending on where you like putting in the FS.

so technically a nollie cab doesn't exist.  i would call it a switch cab before calling it a nollie cab but i'm weird.

so some guy who i've never heard of had a part in a video i've never seen, but he's the authority on the skate industry, not the extremely successful company owner, or the living legend skateboarder.

friend, i say this with love and respect, go die in a fire
agreed.

hahaha, i love this argument..I too, have always been one to say that the word CAB/CABALLERIAL implies the word FAKIE.  therefore, there is no such thing as nollie cab, 1/2 cab or whatever...i understand what people are talking about when they say it, but to me (and like I said, to each their own), it's a nollie f/s or b/s 180, nollie f/s heel...prime example would be nollie b/s flip...it's NOT called a nollie b/s 1/2 cab flip, is it??  but you do call a fakie one a f/s 1/2 cab flip (as opposed to a regular 1/2 cab flip)...

i think i just shorted out my own brain....but yea..

this how i say it: (it is not the industry way to say thigns by any means i just think it makes the most sense cause then there is NO QUESTION as to what you are talking about.)

nollie half cab heelflip,
nollie bs heelflip

nollie cab heelflip
nollie 360 heelflip

half cab heel
fakie bs heelflip (no one else calls it that but it makes more sense. it fits with nollie bs heelflip)

and everyone will know what you are talking about. if someone says nollie half cab you obviously know what they are talking about. if you say nollie bs 180 everyone will know what you are talking about. its FAKIE that fucks with everything. everyone will call the fs verson a half cab, but then the bs version people always throw out the fucking strangest shit. they say "Frontside Halfcab Heel" or "fakie fs heel". but a halfcab IS FRONTSIDE (isnt it?).

i think this makes the most sense - when you are doing a 180 and you are going blind side that should be a backside 180, no matter which stance. i have actually been saying "fakie blindside heel" lately because that is even more precise. no one should be confused as to what you are talking about. if you dont say half cab in the name you should basically assume its the other way. its just so much easier.

i know im wrong im just saying my way would make it easier.

Fakie b/s heelflip is not the proper way to describe a f/s half cab heel.

its weird when i hear people throw the 180 in there when they're talking about a trick.
nobody says fs 180 kickflip, people say frontside flip or a frontside heel, backside flip or backside heel.
so why throw the 180 in there when its done nollie?  why not just say FS nollie heel?

i don't say the number unless someones doing a 360 even then i just say the "3" and drop the "side" like,
he did a "front 3 down" the double set yo!
he did a "back 3 nollie flip" to manual kid, it was sick!

maybe i'm just weird but one things for certain, trick names are way too long these days.

and yes its always funny when people talk about fakie, so many people get it wrong.  but the real pisser is when i bust out my buttery ass switch nollies, then nobody can step to me!

Fakie b/s heelflip is not the proper way to describe a f/s half cab heel.

but isnt a halfcab already frontside?

Yeah, fakie up the wall to backside 360 with a backside grab.

Cabs are backside by default.

The one you are talking about is actually backside, whatever it would be forward, it is fakie, so doing a frontside heel while rolling fakie is a frontside half cab heel.

the gipper is right, whatever it is going forward, it is going fakie. but you substitute BACKSIDE for HALF CAB. and if youre doing a frontside turn its FRONTSIDE HALF CAB.  thats that.

If you really want to get nerdy about it a nollie frontside 360 is callled a gazelle and a nollie backside 360 is called a hellipop. Thats what they were named when Rodney first started doing them.

I think the word caballerial should only be for fakie and for nollie tricks just called it 180, 360 or whatever.

No, because 'gazelle' just sound so infinitely gay. On par with "dolphin flip". Trick names were cooler when they were given by hard living party guys in the 70s, and not skinny kids who film all their stuff in their parent's garage.

No it's a nollie frontside 360 which is why back in the early 90's when people were doing those weird 360 pivots out of noseslides and crooked grinds they were calling it "gazelle out".

Probably the reason why the name was dropped.
