Time for new shoes. I'm looking for shoes that are grippy, light, and most importantly have heel and foot impact padding. I'm not 15 anymore, but I still skate a lot, so I need something that's functional instead of just marketing.
Is there anything newer/better than the original eS Kostons or the Vans XLT Rowley's? In terms of comfort, these are (for me) the two best shoes ever. In terms of being grippy, the XLT's are pretty terrible. Not sure if this is cause they're old (they're from 99, found them and started riding them again), or cause of the shoes themselves.
Feeling the board is nice, landing on concrete for two hours is not very fun.
-
Gel inserts for Vans = best of both worlds.
-
i started skating cupsole mids exclusively after hurting my feet too much on vulcs. it's made a big difference though it took a couple of sessions to be comfortable with losing some of the board feel. but i'm thankful because my feet aren't jacked after a few missed tricks anymore.
pretty much any brand will work, really. there's lots of good padded shoes. really for me it's all about having the mid - protects my ankles and i just feel more confident having my foot wrapped up in some padding. it's probably like 80% mental.

I tried using generic inserts on regular half cabs before, but they would slip forward and bunch up at the front. They weren't gels though, as long as gels don't slip I would like to give that a try.
-
Gels don't slip.

Haha yeah. I've been doing that in the XLT's for a few months now. I've tried the inserts in some eS', and landing without the board still feels like landing barefoot. They don't slip, I just put them underneath the normal insole.
-
Halfcab pros have a decent amount of padding throughout the shoe, and also have a removable insole, that might work for you, but everyone has a different idea of the right amount of padding so I don't know. Also, I think if you found a ten year old skate shoe, the rubber on the outsole would definitely have lost a lot of its initial grip.

Yeah, you're probably correct.
From also running a lot, there are basically different shoe types depending on how high your arches are, and if your feet roll inwards or outwards. (http://www.runnersworld.com/cda/shoefinder_description/1,,s6-240-325-329-0-0-0-0-0,00.html) I pretty much fall into the "neutral" or "high arches" category for running shoes. It would probably be better if skate shoes were labeled for "motion control" (lower arches/flat feet), "support" (most people), or "cushioned / neutral" (higher arches). What works for some people just won't work for others.
-
If you can find a pair of c1rca 404's, you'll never want another shoe again.
-
Have Accels right now. Would recommend. Basic non Vansy skate shoe, cheap, pretty comfy. eS also has a vulc version of the OG Koston out. I wanted to try em but the shop didnt have any in my size.

I'd say my ideal skate shoe would be like these (http://www.mizunousa.com/equipment.nsf/1/10run1-ftwm/410367?opendocument&div=running&cat=10run1-ftwm), but grippier sides and an upper that wouldn't get torn apart in ten seconds. Super light, foam padding... all it needs are vulcanized sidewalls.

.......

i back the emerica reynolds cruisers pretty hard. way more padding than youd expect by looking at them. the insole is filled with all this hi tech robot status stuff.
also hate to say it . . . theyre expensive and nike sucks but nike sb dunks are probably the most comfortable shoe out.
-
^
The canvas on those rips really fast. I'm not sure about the suede models though.
-
dunno if this is what you're talking about but when i skate stairs and shit i take this pad thing i ripped out of some old lakais and put them under my soles. helps with heel bruises. (http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/2056/dsc00574n.jpg)
-
Yeah my feet started hurting with the thin shoes too. I've been skating Accels a lot recently and I'm really happy with them. I don't know about that running shoe though.
-
Axion Mandela's...so comfortable its just not right. I seriously back those shoes now.
-
Nike Omars. Swear by 'em. Super grippy, enough padding without feeling ghost sole, and they're holding up decently to some wear. I went from skating Janoski's for a year to the Omars. Made big difference on those first couple of flip tricks that seem to always go primo. Best cup sole I've skated in a long time.
Get a time machine and get some 'es Creagers too. That dude made a fucking awesome shoe.

Had a pair of those back in the day and didn't like how they fit. Heard the Reed's are comfy, but I could never bring myself to buy another pair of IPaths again.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Adidas yet. Campus vulcs and Gazelles both seem to have a good combo of board feel/support. Not the longest lasting shoes, but not the worst for it either.

still running my TNT2 insoles from 3 years ago, fattest ass heel protection ever, I once skated a pair of crocs with them bitches in there

the canvas ones are fine. thats all i skate. i just sand my grip down. you dont need grippy grip when you have grippy shoes. i dont do a lot of flip tricks and these last me quite a while. also theres a second layer of stuff under the canvas that doesnt rip fast.

I tried the p-rod 2's today... too narrow but otherwise semi-decent. Addidas are basically indoor soccer shoes, but without the midsole padding my old Addidas indoor soccer shoes have. Puma indoor soccer shoes were better to skate than Addidas back when I was 12.
Those tnt2's might look good, will probably try them tomorrow. Guess it's those or the xlt's. eS and Emerica are out, as the eS ladd's contributed towards a 6 month perpetual injury. eS/Emerica need to pay someone $15 to google something better than the tiny g2 gel pad and padding that gets crushed down after a week, before I'll buy their stuff again. I like them cause they're a skate company, but they're almost as regular as Independent's "super light... not stupid light" ads. They spent more time on the stilabs g2 website than cutting an oval shape out of the cvs gel inserts 12 years ago.
The running shoe thing I posted wasn't totally serious, however Mizuno's 9oz shoes are probably lighter than any skate shoe and have more functional padding than all of them. The materials are just more modern. It makes them so much more comfortable, without being bulky. I think skate shoe companies have basically taken a step backwards from when I was in high school and the K1's came out.

Oh course, board feel for days and the holes near the toes mean your toe-jam just oozes right outta there
-
i really like nike free runners, they feel really good and skate pretty good in transition and while cruising, I dont know why nike hasn't tried doing anything with it for the SB line.

What is so advanced about the K1's? If you really want some of the tech and thought that running shoes have you should get the Zoom Tres. I havent tried them though I really want to, but they seem like theyd be just what youre looking for. Everyone else is pretty much just rehashing the same shit that people have been skating for 15 years, but most people are fine with that.

Yeah probably, you're probably right about the tre's. The k1's were well constructed and had that air packet. It's not like someone couldn't duplicate or improve on it, but like you said, nobody's really been interested in doing so. In addition to skating 3 pairs of the originals, I also played tennis in a worn out pair for 4 months in hs. They fell apart, but my feet never hurt. I still have them around. Maybe I should post a photo, they're probably the most destroyed k1's ever. Also, checked out the tnt2's and the insole pad is alright, but it's just on a vulc sole.
http://www.weartested.de/ is a good site. I just found it from the forums yesterday.

The Tre AD, the Veloce, and the upcoming FP all use/used variants on the Nike free sole. Good mix of flexibility and durability.

those look like a skateable version of these

Got the nike tre ad's. They're wider than the p-rod's, so they fit well. The other nice thing about the sole is it's flexible, like my running shoes. Going to skate them with the same cvs gel inserts I have too. Those things are awesome. I would have gotten Vans, DC, Lakai, or someone, I guess they just need to step up and make a wider variety of shoes. (http://i.imgur.com/I0gnk.jpg)

plan b with tensors? those shoes? thats the harshest setup ive ever seen.
-
DVS anthems are really good with board feel/padding and the new getz 5s coming out will be amazing to skate in and are of course a cupsole. Besides that most of the nikes that look vulc are pretty much a cup sole like the harbors.
-
i recently got the newest eS McCrank shoe and there seriously like walking with pillows under your feet. most comfortable shoes ive had in a long time and good board feel

haha, no. i really like it a lot. i just switched out the bushings, i wanted to try tensors. my old trucks were super heavy, and i got tired of it. but i could like, go along with the orthodoxy or something if that would be cool.

harbors are vulcanised
-
they look big enough, but they were totally comfortable, the sole last forever.

Superskate cupsoles? Nice. I've got two pairs of the vulc version right now, holding up nicely but I had to throw extra insoles in both of them cuz they're so damn thin.
Another non-SB adidas that's made for this thread is the Tapper Evolution. Skates really good right out of the box and the support hasn't given out after wearing and skating them on/off for about 5 months.

If I could find a pair of the Koston 3's (the ones that looked like basketball shoes) I'd be in love.

Haha, the shop thats selling those is so lame. Its called Bad Boys Club, and its owned by this old guy whos never skated and is a total kook. They overprice everything. Look at all the other old ass shoes hes selling, its insane. Its because he never sells anything and just stock piles them. I used to go there when I first started skating until I realized how much it sucked.

Yes thats what i said the harbors have the vulc look but have good padding in the sole which feels like a regular cupsole.

i got the nike classic his over the weekend and they are great... cupsole with boardfeel like a pair of vans. and air in the heel.

I disagree about Vans not making good shoes anymore. I can't say anything about Estillo Quattros because I didn't skate my pair yet. It's sitting in a dusty box somewhere. Anyway, I think Vans still has a shitload of good shoes. I would recommend getting TNT IIs. And, get a Cardiel deck like GnarlesManson said.
