Title: What part would you introduce to a kid?
Post by: lamfordie on July 19, 2010, 10:27:25 PM
What would be the first video or part you would show to a kid who is just learning how to skate. I would show them Mind Field or all of the Habitat vids.

an ollie trick tip. I personally wouldn't want to show a kid a part and be like" this is how you should skateboard". That's whats wrong with 90% of faggots on slap. someone else formed their opinion for them.

Basically all sorts of weird skating that they might not even realize people do. Let 'em know you can do pretty much whatever you want if you feel like it. They'll see plenty of ledges and gaps without any guidance. Besides, most people can't tell the difference between a kickflip and a nollie flip when they start.

This is actually a fair point but there's a difference between showing some young kid something just to get them stoked and showing them it while saying how good it is compared to some other type of skating.

I'd just put yeah right on. I think most kids would get into a video like that because it's got a lot going on with the whole way it was put together and all. Kids would probably love seeing that as a first full length skate video.

yeah i thought this thread was asking what you would show a kid to get them interested in skateboarding, not a kid who's already interested and is trying to learn tricks.

as such, i think baker 3 would be a good one. say what you will about showing drug abuse to impressionable children or whatever, but my whole family sat through baker 3 entertained the entire time, it made it look fun and showed what was possible in skateboarding that someone who isn't familiar with it wouldn't know. they tried to watch strictly for skaters videos with me like the black box videos and were bored to tears. most of the older parts that people have mentioned fit that description of skater only audience, i doubt anyone would want to get into skating these days watching that ricky oyola part.

For someone who's just getting into skateboarding I'd show them a nutty old Plan B Rodney Mullen part...  Those were my favorite parts to watch starting out because Rodney has always and is different than anyone else out there.  Those parts showed me that even if all I had was an empty parking lot to skate that the sky was still the limit.

the first video my friends and i got a hold of was actually the old 411vm trick tips video.   the one with kareem campbell doing kickflips, ed templeton doing grinds and reynolds doing manuals.   we watched that over and over.  we had already seen one or two actual skateboard videos at that point, but there was so much going that we were overwhelmed.  we liked the trick tips because we could actually tell what the hell was going on.  a good trick tips video is not a bad start.

this is a great topic....I wasn't sure what would be a good video part to really introduce a kid to skating....so i figured I'd see what everyone else put, and try to make a better opinion...after all was said and done, there was nothing that hit home more that that Lavar McBride "Trilogy" part.  That made my fuckin day right there.  It's one of those video parts that humbles you and at the same time makes you just want to push down the street and SKATEBOARD, rather than the 1-trick "stunt" boarding I seem to see a lot....don't get me wrong, I'm not against big gap/handrail skating, but this just seems way more pure to me.  seems like something like that would really make a kid want to start skating.  the skating is clean, but is still fuckin insane.  there's a switch 360 flip in there, about half way through, that nailed it for me....that was it.  and considering how old the video is, it made it that much sicker....just my old ass throwin in my 2 cents...

Yeah it's great because it's lots of lines, stuff you can do in your own neighborhood, and mostly low-impact (with the exception of the Hubba Hideout stuff) so you won't break your head trying it.

new signature.

With that being said, I'd have to agree with the Tiltmode videos. I love the "feel good" aspect of 'em, along with A Happy Medium. I was introduced with Dying to Live... it led me to have some of the best years of my life jumping off and down shit while my body could still handle it. I don't know if that would totally work now... kids are super stoked on all that tech wizardry.

Definately! Probably one of the krooked videos where he's just skating down the street being wacky, jumping off things and acting a fool, and actually looks like he's enjoying himself. That'd get a kid stoked to just go out and roll down the street.

On the other end of the spectrum maybe something from Heath Kirchart, TIS or Sight Unseen.

Or a tour video like Super Campion Funzone, Hot Chocolate or Tent City.

or any of the tiltmode Vids, or the jerry and Louie re edit from that osiris video, the one when boulala was on?

That's a great part, it's whole vibe is just fun. It's a shared part too which would stoke some kids out just because it shows them skating the same spots and having a good time. Everything going out to skate with your friends is about.
