Title: Things to do in SF?
Post by: ??? on September 12, 2010, 10:12:17 AM
My old lady and I will be in SF for a wedding next week and we will have about a day and a half to spend in the city. Obviously I could go skateboarding, but she might not be to into that. What should I do there? We were thinking of going to SFMoma and Haight/Ashbury, but other than that, I am a bit clueless. Any suggestions?

With the missus... have an Anchor Steam, ride the trolley, check out the gold rail, visit a taqueria in the Mission, visit the Exploratorium, walk the Golden Gate, ah... visit Deluxe and bother Jim or go to High Speed and destroy the offices of Mark and crew.  hehe

Have a shitload of Anchor Steam on the brewery tour. But you better call now and see if you can book a slot. I think they fill up quick. It's free and their tasting afterward is serious business.

Go to el farolito
get super suiza
eating is not necessary for the next 12 hours.

hit up the broken record on friday night for 50 cent pints of pabst and the best bar food in the city

Thanks for the advice, guys.

We are looking into the night time Alcatraz thing. that sounds interesting. Anchor Steam sounds rad too.

Can you actually go to the Deluxe or High Speed offices? It would be pretty rad to go to either. I was thinking of going to the DLXSF shop too. Can you find deals there?

La taquria - 25th & mission - has crispy tacos that are mind blowing
Boudins does have good chowder in bread bowls
Market street cool to walk up. From the ferry plaza to union square.
North beach for pizza at golden boy and drinks

There's so much shit

broken record is awesome. Though i think 50 cent PBR night is on Saturdays? Friday nights are 2 dollar Guinness. Although they're pretty arbitrary with those two particular drink specials (sometimes they'll charge you full price if they think you don't know what's up). And yes, DEFINITELY the best bar food in the city.

El Farolito is my favorite taqueria. I'm from Los Angeles where there's more Mexican spots than people and Farolito beats anything we have to offer.

SFMOMA sucks. No need to go there. You're better off going to Legion Of Honor imo or even the Museum of Science.

http://www.calacademy.org/ (http://www.calacademy.org/)

There is a place on Geary and Masonic called Hukilau that is really good. Hawaiian spot that has a late night happy hour from like 10-1am on Friday-Sunday. Food is good proportions and sometimes that actually have a some guys doing live music.

http://dahukilau.com/sanfrancisco/ (http://dahukilau.com/sanfrancisco/)

Also if you and your girl want to get romantical, you can check out the Candy Bar on Fulton and Divisadero. Little place that you can get desserts and get your drink on and play boardgames if you want. They have some good sangria and decent price on Sangria.

http://www.candybarsf.com/ (http://www.candybarsf.com/)

And speaking of sangria, if you head out to Haight, check out of course Cha-Cha-Cha.

yes to el farolito. yes to clam chowder.
more food:
may's sandwich shop. near market and church. best pastrami west of katz's deli.
pj's oyster bar. 9th/irving area. favorite seafood in sf.
hard knocks soul food. 3rd st/20th, near ballpark. mmmm.
hukilau. hawaiian food. geary/masonic, right across from wallenberg.
greens. vegetarian place on the water at ft mason.
stinking rose. italian food, heavy on the garlic. in north beach, think it's on columbus. go check out city lights books right nearby.
non-food:
walk along the embarcadero. if you have a car, go up to twin peaks and get the 360 view of the city. walk across the golden gate, or at least half and back. cable cars are kinda fun.
and yes, you can come to high speed, or at least to SLAP, but there isn't much to see...

if you like bourbon (and cute waitresses) this bar is worth checking out.  you gotta make a reservation

http://www.bourbonandbranch.com/ (http://www.bourbonandbranch.com/)

the Tonga Room is a fun place to have a strong tropical drink.  over the top cheesy polynesian style (it even rains in there)

http://www.yelp.com/biz/tonga-room-san-francisco (http://www.yelp.com/biz/tonga-room-san-francisco)

the drinks are really good too

i'm not from SF but gots some friends there and had fun at those places.  it's touristy as hell but you gotta check out Fisherman's warf, and the Farmer's Market down from there is really nice and has lots of good food options too like tacos and pupusas
Title: Re: Things to do in SF?
Post by: Fongstarr. on September 13, 2010, 01:47:52 PM
Haha....I went to the Tonga room not too long ago. No real crowd there when I went but it looks pretty stellar if you get drunk enough.

Man....I have to check El Farlitos again. I think I got overwhelmed with how big the burrito is. Also there is a taco truck next to Best Buy near the freeway entrance. Their tacos and burittos are tits!

legion of honor is pretty cool. i also like the Amoeba record store on Haight St. it is like the size of a costco and has cassette tapes which i like a lot. there is one on market st. too thats really big but i forget what its called, its not as good either in my opinion.

Driving in SF is actually pretty easy. All you have to do is learn how to make U-turns the long way. Other then that, just watch out for crazy drivers and it's not too bad.

When I was in SF, my best day was spent skating from Haight Street to the piers with the sea lions.
Don't know what else. You could make a trip to vegas...while we're on the topic:
Ahlees crew is fourth at the moment, they need to be 1st to go to vegas.
Here's the original post, go to the left side and click "vote for this crew":
You fucking guys won me an iPad, so I know youre capable! Help send some slap pals to vegas. We would document the entire thing and I promise it'd be gold. I just got this going to were working on the challenges.. But it says you can vote once a day. Its super easy so if you guys can just hook it up, pass this shit around, whatever! that'd be so fucking sick.

yeah, that's Rasputin Music. Definitely not as awesome as Amoeba. Not even close.

another place you should maybe check out is a bar in the Mission District called Delirium. It's sorta seen as a "skater" bar in the same vein Max Fish is in new york. I danced with Dave Bachinsky with "poison" by Bell Biv Davoe playing in the background. It was weird. Really weird.

Come to think of it, almost every bar in the Mission is populated  by skaters on Friday and Saturday nights

^^I've actually never been to Delirium. Like a block away is Gestalt Haus which is another bar and I went there once after the L-R-G premiere and they happened to be filming a porno there and giving out free beers. I believe a porn company called Pinkys (I think the same building as 3 up 3 down but not sure) is around the corner on Mission St. from there too and they film that odd ass porno where it is like wresting with 2 girls and the winner like fucks the other one. I had a co-worker's baby daddy that got to check it out live. I guess they even sell tickets or allow a crowd to watch.

yeah, I missed out on that shit! I went to the premiere too and somehow didn't notice the filming of a porno a few steps away. Fuck.

and the company is kink.com  I watched the finished product of what they were filming. Prettttty hot stuff.

I hear the waiting list to get a tour of the porn studio is a mile long..

Pops on 24th and york is kinda like that too. Its the unofficial bar of potrero del sol park.
El Farolito's food isn't the best in the mission, but I would pay so much for a jar of their salsa. SO good. And the fact that its open until 4 a.m. makes it really popular. Pancho Villa is pretty fucking dope too.
City lights, and vesuvio next door in north beach are an amazing piece of beatnik history. Pretty much all of the old beatniks used to hang out at both of the places. Vesuvio is filled with douchebags now for the most part, but I had a friend who was a cocktail waitress there and she used to get me wasted for free.
Tommy's joynt on van ness is pretty dope.
Also, don't even fucking bother with anything on fisherman's wharf. Its nothing more than a shit tourist trap. Its got all the shit you see in other tourist traps like Times square in new york like "bubba gump shrimp" and maddam tusaud's wax museum, and they also got overpriced seafood. Overall though, you aren't really experiencing the city at all.

Go to Jones st. at California street (I think its California, basically, go to the top from downtown). Look down it, decide Sean Young is your new favorite skater ever for doing this:
Sean Young Hill Bomb (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pa85I_5rWBg#)
You don't know until you go. And don't worry that your girl doesn't skate, you couldn't skate it anyway (nobody can really) and telling any person a dude rode down that in a skateboard would blow their mind.

Pulled Pork sandwich from Broken Record, get some bacon fries on the side if they have them on the menu...

North Beach is nice to walk around at night...there are some really good sights of the city too

El Farolito is good, but you can't go wrong with any taqueria on the Mission

Get a Mission hot dog at night if you're in the area

Try a taco Nick's way at Nick's Crispy Tacos or Underdogs. Yelp them. The beer battered fish is too good.

Nothing worth seeing on Market Street unless you want to stop by DLXSF or you're around the piers

Go to Greens for a nice, clean vegetarian meal

I'm sure everyone has posted these already, but have fun in the City

Thanks to everyone for the good advice. Just got back yesterday (where did all these new sections come from?).

Went to DLXSF and FTC. Checked out the De Young and Sciences Center (actually didn't go in because it was too expensive, but somehow got into De Young and got to the ninth floor - Terrell Light Exhibit was bad ass). Walked in Presidio by Fort Pointe. Ate in the Mission at Gracias Madre. Went to Twin Peaks, as well as Berkeley and even Half Moon Bay. Did some cool shit. Thanks, guys.

Edit: Saw Jones St. Holy fuck!

It's always nice to get all the family together, but dynamics can be weird sometimes. My cousin, who got married, is kind of an asshole, and treats my aunt, his mom, really badly. Always takes advantage of her. I don't know. It was nice to see my other cousins and aunties though......
