Title: Gravis
Post by: Omamori on September 14, 2010, 10:20:10 PM
I've been feeling Gravis's shoes lately. How do the Arto LX, Filter, or Dylan slip on's skate?  I'm leaning more towards the Arto's.

i dont have any of those, however i do have the dylan mid which is stupidly similar to the artos (but a mid rather than a low)
and in terms of build quality and skatability i love em, would deffinatley reccomend them

my friend bought the reider slip ons as a chill shoe/work shoe and skated in them once after work (for like 5 minutes) and it fucked them up hard!!! deffinatley not designes for skating on a comercial level

IMO Gravis is taking the time to make quality skate shoes with good fits and materials in classic styling that isn't driven by logos.
On my 5th pair of arto's right now, with the poron in the shoe my body doesn't hurt as much and that keeps me skating longer. The soles are grippy as any other company if not more so.Materials vary on durability. If you can find a tech tuff shoe like the filter lx or dylan i highly advise grabbing them. Most durable shoe ever possibly. I know the burton backing scares most off but it's a small program catering only to small shops(like nike sb) they do have a lifestyle collection available to big shops but keep the IV skate stuff low key.
Theyre doing it right, and if you like skating those silhouettes (era/slip on) I have no doubts you'll be into the shoes.
And the team is pretty damn amazing.Arto, dylan, jake johnson, javier mendezibal, steve forstner.

I had the dylan mid and they did not last me more than two weeks before having hekka holes everywhere. It could be because of the wierd pleather ish material. They skated good tho I loved them honestly but did not like all the socks I went thru from them

The waxed canvas has been proven to not be so durable, which is what you had.
The suede or tech tuff is the material to look for if you want a shoe that lasts longer.

That's what it was, they skated good for sure. I'd definitely give those new Artosa try. I feel like gravis is doin stuff proper. The shoes have a good 'look down factor' and feel really good while skating extremely well

i really like my arto LXs
been skating some TechTuff Filters currently. they stretch out more then i would have imagined. so, i might stop skating them just cause my foot is slipping around more then i want. they are tuff and super grippy and flicky.

Damn it. Does anyone have a scan I can zoom in on for that page? I'm interested in reading what they say about the Dylans, but have no desire to have the entire book.

I just started wearing my black waxed canvas Dylan Mids.  Nice shoe.  Not gonna skate them though.  They run about a half size big.  The skatewarehouse sizing thing is decent for sizing purposes if you can't try them on in person.

Definitely. My heel slips out a tad bit when i push hard. But thicker/sturdier/grippy socks usually solve the problem.

anyone tried to dye the bluebird Arto's?

Seen some for cheap which I'm considering getting and then trying to dye the suede.  I know it'll come through in all the usual places once they've been skated in a bit, but if it looks hella strange I can also re-dye every now and then

i tried a pair of arto's in my normal size (11) and they felt a bit big. i'd say go a half size down

Post by: pandarelated on September 28, 2010, 02:14:24 PM
all the gravis i have worn (arto's and filters) all had to get half a size down.
10 -> 9.5 for me.

I tried on a bunch of gravis shoes today and they all feel long but quite narrow so it will depend on your foot. I went a whole size down on my Busenitz size because i like my shoes to fit really tight, but on average i'd say go half a size down.
The whole line looks really good and feels well made though. I got me some Arto LXs and they feel amazing.

I usually get them in my same size because they come to such a point and I like a little space in the toes so I don't jam my toes if I kick something or fuck up skating. But since everyone seems to say half a size down, I'll have to try that next time.

I am a true 12 and got 12's in artos.Filters are narrower so i would size 1/2 up if you can.

So just confirming, half a size down with the filters? I'm usually a 10 and I have a pretty narrow foot.

I would go a half size, but it depends on how tight you like your shoes and if your getting them to skate or chill.
I went a whole size down because vulc shoes usually stretch quite a lot and so to skate in i usually go on the small side. I went with my normal size in Janoskis but now they are too loose for me to skate in.
I got Artos in an 8.5 and I usually ride a 9 to skate in (Busenitz, Janoski (got too big) or a 9.5 for chillers.

If they made it I would get a 12.5 for a filter because I have wide feet.IMO Gravis fit true to size except the filter.Suprised to hear people sizing down instead of up.

I'm in exactly the same position. I haven't skated a leather shoe since a pair of ES Kostons (the original) but I decided to give them a go. The toe cap is Techtuff on the black ones (not really sure what that is? treated leather?) and the beige/sand/browny ones are all waxed suede The regular Arto's are suede toe cap too, so you dont have to get the leather ones..

I should have stated this in my previous post. I have the Dylan's (dress shoe), they fit long but are narrow...I bought them in a 12. I did do 3 tricks in them, they felt to big to skate. Is the Arto sizing similar to the Dylan's?

What width feet do you have? I've never tried the Janoski's. I'm sure you could stretch out the Dylan's. Have you tried the Busenitz? That's the only shoe I have to compare the Dylan's.

I'll go try them on to make sure.......if you have a medium width foot you'll be fine. The Busenitz actually have less toe room for me. I would get them, plus they have the poron (sp) sole which is comforable.

Naw, I don't care if you took it.

I found the same with Janoskis (have to go a size down because of the stretching). If you have a fairly narrow foot, I'd also go a size down in the gravis (though i haven't had the dylan slip on, had filters and artos). They fit long but slightly narrow and they also stretch, make of that what you will.

skate dylan mids the canvas ones. and they rip so fast, i decided to not flip my board but it began ripping, however there is a layer underneath the canvas to protect your feet but i didnt risk to see  how long that would last till it got to my socks.  just like with any other shoe just shoe goe them and they will last at least 3 weeks preferbaly black shoe goe.

Other than the ripping, it feels really good to skate in these gravis'.  Although ima have to disagree with their padding and poron i mean no heel bruises yet or anything like that but definitely your not gonna be jumpin down big stuff all day.  i suggest switching them with tnt soles

but overall really good shoe, not worth their price but i get mine on sale for 25 each then its worth it, padding isnt meant to jump down stuff and get suede

Yeah, it'll have a tag saying if the insole is poron or not. If you look at their shoes on their website, it says it there too. I think there's a video already posted in the topic, but poron is a compound that absorbs pressure absurdly well without distorting its shape.

and for those of you who want to get the filters dont get them.  its pretty much a vans era shoe, not really meant for skating really but you could go ahead and try it yourself
youre waiting on dylan slip ons but you dont think an era esque shoe is skateable?

got my first pair of gravis today after skating vans for the last 3 years
got the filters and skate really really good straight away
skated for about 3 hours this afternoon and very minimal wear, super grippy and nice and flexible
I was suprised on how comfortable they were for such a thin shoe too
think i mite pick up a pair of artos tommorow also now

well thats after like 15 hours skating in them so its not bad, and theyre not actually canvas theyre herringbone or something, like canvas but stronger

This is herringbone
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_6xWLlpdBq6Y/SZcxOaUy86I/AAAAAAAAABM/EjaFzomrVUM/s400/RL+Tyringham+Herringbone_Jet.jpg)

It is a pattern, not a material.

*wikipedia edit:
Actually, while the material is most probably cotton for both, normal canvas and this herringbone (twill) are woven differently, so they might behave a bit differently. Meaning canvas is not the same thing as herringbone, and you were right in stating that. So carry on....

I skated the leather Artos today. They're a little stiff this session, but I feel like once they're a bit more worn in they'll be pretty glorious - very grippy and the toe shape is nice.

Those shoes are discontinued, whatever you see on websites is all they have. Sadly, all I've found is a 10.5 size shoe.

I would not recommend them. I own two pairs and skated one once. They flick and grip the board find, but the flex and durability isn't meant for skating. It's not that the shoe is stiff, just doesn't flex like a normal shoe. If you like the look of the dress shoe, check out the Dylan vulcs.

I bought the dress shoe Dylans for work and the sole started to fall off after 2 days. I work in a hotel and don't do shit, so I was kind of bummed that my $100 shoes were falling apart after 2 days and no skating. I fixed them with super glue, but I still feel like I shouldn't have had to.

yeah ive got the grey suede ones and started skating in them, to be honest i love them. they skate really well and look even better when thrashed, the only negative point i could say about them is the complete lack of ankle support, but i gotta skate with ankle protectors anyways.

also one thing that i need to say because i found it really funny is this...

loads of people saying this shoe is not made for skating, then i see all the adds and reviews for the nike zoom fp and saying theyre the most amazing shoes ever and "you can do tricks you cant do in other skate shoes" but the dylans skate sooooo much better and are way more comfy

I wear 10s in everything. I got 10 for the pairs of Dylans I've had. Fit fine.

On the note of wearing them skating - I just don't. I wore the brown suedes to skate for a few days. They just didn't feel like a skate shoe. That's fine though - because they feel great as a "chiller" boot or shoe or whatever. Black leathers for work. Brown suedes for around the house. Probably the best fitting shoe I've owned, but I don't like it for  skating.

The dress shoe Dylan's? They're horrible. I'm skating a pair of the black suede ones (they look ugly and I bought a black leather pair). Surprisingly the shoe is durable but the grip and flex is the worst. It's too grippy and the shoe only flexes in one area. Not to mention the soles are not meant for skating, too hard.

Nah i meant the vulc ones, ive skated the dressy ones and find it weird everyone says the sole is too grippy because that was my main problem, the sole on my dressy ones are slippy as fuck. except from that i just feel stupid skating the dressy ones. The vulc ones however are probably my favourite skate shoe of 2011, along with the vans rowley svp's

Not the vulcs, the booty/dress-shoe kind. I'm sure the vulcs are good, I just haven't gotten a pair of those to try yet. They look good for skating. But the sole on the dress shoe just isn't meant for skating. I hope nobody at Gravis takes offense to that though, because these are my favorite shoes off the board.

i've skated filters back to back for the passed 6 months, such a rad shoe, the TT's last forever, the sole went through before the TT material. the dylan mids are really good too.
got a pair of the black leather dylans to chill, so comfortable, had a pair of the vulc dylans too but they felt too big so i sold them on.
