There is a icons section where all those guys are. So they are all still on Element....but kind of doing what Zoo York is doing.

Yeah, it's not like he bought that lamborghini from board royalties, he's had quite a few incredibly successful TV shows & movies. Bam is rich, were the poor suckers who are fucked! I imagine Bam will always be a part of Element and is probably ok with bring moved from pro status to icon status. The guy obviously has bigger plans and aspirations than being a pro skater forever.
And congrats to Apples, always been a fan of his.

That would have been more effective if Flip wasn't the company they are today. It's like a person calling a person....a person.

Obviously Apples isn't the young AM he used to be. Not hating on the guy for getting money. I mean Arto did it as well with Burton and I think Apples is in the same category as him and should be getting some paper.

god you're a fucking piece of shit.  weren't you the guy who wouldn't stop talking about how daryl angel was an asshole even though you never meant him?  obviously your opinions have no basis in reality cause if youve ever meant daryl angel you know he is nice to everyone.  say what you will about some of the product nhs puts out, they are good to local skaters who need product, employ a ton of cool people, make the highest quality trucks in the world and do charitable work in the santa cruz area.

edit: also in santa cruz there is a connection between skating and surfing because santa cruz is great for both and kids actually like to have fun in multiple ways.  the kid surfing in the ad (austin smith ford) grew up no more than 10 miles from the nhs factory and now they are hooking him up i think that's pretty rad.

Read what Gipper wrote and think about it, he and I don't always see eye to eye, but his point is on the mark here. Why the fuck is Flop calling out Element for being a surf company when Santa Cruz, who they're now in bed with, makes surfboards? They are the pot calling the kettle black, which is complete retardation.

Unfortunately, your point about Daryl is irrelevant and I'm sure Billabong employs plenty of "good" people somewhere in the world too so that doesn't really prove anything either...

I posted this in the other thread, but this thread looks to be getting more attention, so...

http://www.thrashermagazine.com/articles/magazine/mark-appleyard-interview/ (http://www.thrashermagazine.com/articles/magazine/mark-appleyard-interview/)

What's been on your mind lately?
I'm always thinking of ways to live leisurely. Ways to, you know, get rich.

Yeah, 'cause lately every time we're hanging out you're always talking
about schemes so you'll never have
to work again.
Exactly. I don't ever want to have to work. After skateboarding I don't think I could work.

Are you worried that you're not cut out for the world of employment?
Yeah. I'm just scared that I'm going to have to work, and I don't want to. And I like nice stuff-cars and houses. I like the leisurely lifestyle, so my mind's brewing on a lot of ideas. Sometimes they work out.

What are some of your winning ideas?
I had some money in United States currency and I waited until the Canadian currency was worth the most. When it was $1.00 to $1.40 Canadian I traded a couple hundred grand and made about $70,000 in the exchange.

This is very different from the young man dreaming about crooked grinds from a few years ago.
Yeah, well, you know, as time goes by you realize that it would be nice to be rich.

In fact, the last time we did an interview you spoke specifically about how you had gotten rid of your luxury car. You said, at that time, that luxury cars were stupid. What made you change your mind? I know these days you have two luxury cars and have even purchased some men's jewelry. What changed?
I think I just woke up to it. I was like, "Shit!
I like nice shit!" The luxury cars are way better than the other ones.

no this is how it really is:

flip makes paper thin boards that feel soggy after 2 days with stupid graphics and dumb campaigns

element tries to be this really core brand through and fucking through and so many fags have repped the shit out of this backward ass brand deadly to the environment brand it is an eyesore to see that stupid logo, its like trying to avoid listening to nickelback.

nhs was at a time the top of the skateboard game, well lots of things have changed, namely the fact that over 90% of the brands in the past 10 years have cut costs extravagantly to the point where there are less than a handful of distributors competing on price and not quality and putting out the same tired graphics over and over again... it is impossible for any of these big companies to compete on those piss poor margins especially since the US manufacturing industry has been diarheaing the bed over the past two years... so they have to keep pressing bad boards and stupid graphics to stay in business...

so i dont really see how either 1 of these companies is any more "legit" or "core" or even "cool" than the other... you really have to look to those smaller brands to find the cool stuff nowadays, unfortunatly they dont have the money to put towards good wood, is there even a board brand out there that still makes boards out of good wood??? honestly i dont even really see AWS, girl, real as any different any more... i used to put those brand sorta one step higher but im pretty sure thats out the window now. please, correct me if im wrong.

I think the ad is aimed at billabong and the whole world domination trip they're on.  They recently bought RVCA too. I think don't this is a stab at Apples personally. It just makes sense they make this statement on the day that the new rider is accounced considering the context. The whole not for sale thing leads me to believe flip or nhs may have been approached by Billabong.

god you're a fucking piece of shit. weren't you the guy who wouldn't stop talking about how daryl angel was an asshole even though you never meant him? obviously your opinions have no basis in reality cause if youve ever meant daryl angel you know he is nice to everyone. say what you will about some of the product nhs puts out, they are good to local skaters who need product, employ a ton of cool people, make the highest quality trucks in the world and do charitable work in the santa cruz area.

edit: also in santa cruz there is a connection between skating and surfing because santa cruz is great for both and kids actually like to have fun in multiple ways. the kid surfing in the ad (austin smith ford) grew up no more than 10 miles from the nhs factory and now they are hooking him up i think that's pretty rad.
[close]
Read what Gipper wrote and think about it, he and I don't always see eye to eye, but his point is on the mark here. Why the fuck is Flop calling out Element for being a surf company when Santa Cruz, who they're now in bed with, makes surfboards? They are the pot calling the kettle black, which is complete retardation.

Unfortunately, your point about Daryl is irrelevant and I'm sure Billabong employs plenty of "good" people somewhere in the world too so that doesn't really prove anything either...
i totally see what he is saying about the flip criticism of element and i agree with both of you.  however, to say nhs is just like billabong really just proves you two have no idea what you are talking about as did the daryl angel situation with the gipper.  im not into surfing as evidenced by my error above, but there is a huge difference between a corporation like billabong and nhs.  every company employs good people, that is a subjective term and was only one of my reasons supporting my argument.  however, look at the brands on nhs: independent, santa cruz, creature, krux, flip and ricta.  whether or not there is a surfing element attached, these companies make good product and have people who care deeply about skating working for them (ron whaley is an example at krux). billabong made tons of money off of surf related clothing and then bought a lame skate company to make more profits.  nhs began with skateboarding, still makes some of the best product on the market and is more than generous to people in the community in which they are located.  i agree that rowley has no place to be criticizing surf companies (HE RIDES FOR VOLCOM!), almost no one in the skate industry does, but saying nhs is a bad as billabong is just untrue.

also to the gipper, you can just go to mayfair plaza and tell daryl angel to his face that he is an asshole and educate everyone at the park about what an asshole he is cause i think a lot of them don't know and would be grateful to have your knowledge expounded on them.

Anyone read the interview with appleyard on the tws site. It said that Monster bought Lutzka a house as a signing bonus, if they could do that for lutzka, i wonder what kind of bonus they've done for other riders?

I like nice shit!" The luxury cars are way better than the other ones.

here are some of my favorite parts of the Appleyard TWS interview:

What inspired the move to Element? Had it been in the works for a while?
I mean, I had a lot of options and I just figured that Element best suits my vibe. It?s just a nice company and kinda earthy and nature-y and stuff. I just felt like, ?Damn that?s where I wana be.? And then I met up with the guys and they were really cool and we just clicked. I?m down?it?s sick.

On a different note, what made you tattoo ?one love? on your forearm instead of buying a Bob Marley poster like everyone else?
[Laughs.] True. Maybe I should have just bought the Bob Marley poster but I was in Finland and a friend of mine tattooed at his apartment. I guess I was just feelin? it. I dunno, ?One love? is just kinda rootsy or something. Or that?s what I was thinkin? at the time. [Laughs].

Fellow Element rider Muska once said, ?Money makes you thick.? Considering the new deal with Element, how thick should we expect you to get?
A little thicker than I am now, but not too thick.

More sushi dinners?
Yeah, some sushi dinners, but some more steak.

Just getting that Filet Mignon or what?
Yeah more Filet Mignon. [Laughs].

fuck yeah, Apples!! i'd be hyped too if i was on a board company that was more earthy and nature-y. so rootsy. hell yeah. i'm predicting some baller-ass dinner tonight!

All in all its a good move . Flip has changed ALOT . In the interview he said he wasnt happy at flip , why work with something and represent it if you aint happy with it . Also says Appleyard is married now and with marrige comes big responsibilitys , specialy if you want to have kids and shit . congrats on getting married !

Element has one of the sickest pro teams now , timtim , stranton , brown , apples . While Element might not have been the coolest company , they were doing alot for the skateboarding comunity , They have a Europen Pro and Am team , Canadian , Japanese too I belive , plus they sponsor alot of contests and building stuff in europe atleast , not counting the number of dudes they are flowing

plus they have jeremy wray

The only thing I dont get about Appleyard is that in one interview just befor the thasher one , dude was saying that he doesnt want to milk his carrer , money aint that important , and hes not one of those dudes that are above getting a regular job when his carrer is over .

Anyways , stoked for Appleyard . Dude has nice style and tricks , he says hes slowing down but every clip hes had on the berrics hes murking it .

Here is my long winded version of the event. I thought it was a great skateboard history lesson and talk. Most of you already know much of the story but for those who don't here you go.

The skateboard panel event held at NextSpace, didn?t have the full house of (90) I?d hoped for but it did have the stories. If you skateboard and wanted to know the history of Santa Cruz Skateboards, the various changes in the history of skateboard wheel since the 70?s or about all the one off skateboard machines that NHS uses to test and build the latest greatest skateboard products, you missed your opportunity. You missed Aptos local, Don Bostick who founded the World Cup of Skateboarding (with his wife Danielle Bostick), talk about his passion for skateboarding and the lumps and bumps along his career path. You missed the story behind the Maloof Money Cup?s skate event with highest money purse in skateboardings history. Don?s his first introduction to events via Tony Hawk and how he hung up on them thinking it was a crank call and how they called back and changed his life?s path. And his early days working on the X Games to present day mega ramp events that are coming in the near future.

Thursday night was the Santa Cruz Design and Innovation Skateboard Panel event at NextSpace which had a kind of high cover for this economy but it still had a crowd of around 50 people. In the audience was Jeff Kendall the VP with NHS. TC the owner of the new Santa Cruz Boardroom skate shop, and Annie Morhauser from Annie Glass with her son Taylor, and a host of others, I invited Rick Blackhart, Jimbo and Jim Phillips, Keith Meek and many other skaters though many didn?t make it.

If you every wondered what the letters NHS stands for you would of heard the full story as told by Tim Piumarta, the Director of R+D at NHS and skated for NHS back in the early days and started to work for them in his teens and has never stopped. His passion for skate and his knowledge was inspiring. Tim was the first speaker on the panel, who could have talked for the whole evening and we would have been more than happy to listen.

NHS stands for Novak, Haute and Shuirman and was founded in the early 70?s. Richard Novak still owns and runs the company with president Bob Denike, who is another true blue skater from back in the day. Doug Haute is the legendary surfboard shaper and owner of Haute Surfboards located on Swift Street on the West side. Jay Shuirman was a great counter balance and best friend to Richard Novak. Jay was an amazing person who died of Leukemia at age 42. (Read the book ?Built to Grind?by Independent Trucks and learn more about Jay?s amazing life and how his influence started a change in the skate industry that has made an ever lasting impact). The NHS brands are well known worldwide which include the following: Santa Cruz Skateboards, Independent Trucks, Ricta Wheel Dynamics, Krux Trucks, Creature Skateboards, Designarium, Nor Cal, Mob Grip, Bullet Products, Anti-Crime and Strange Notes. Some of the brands from the early days were Road Rider, OJ Wheels, Cellblocks, Park Rider and a few others.

Tim talked about the history of the skateboard wheel from back in the ball bearing days to the transition of the sealed bearing and how it changed skateboarding forever. How a man with an idea to put a bearing from a Xerox machine into a wheel for a faster and quieter ride and how he drove down 41st and stopped at the first surf shop he came across to try and sell his idea. He stopped at O'neills which at the time was managed and run by Jon Buckley and Michael Mitchell. They told their bosses who said we don?t do skateboards. Michael told the man to go to the Santa Cruz Surf Shop which was the closest one to the beach on 41st and owned by NHS. Jay and Rich worked out the deal to make the wheel design to fit the bearings and the rest is history. Maybe one day NHS will write a book about their amazing story.

Tim proceeded to show us the first wheels and it?s size to tall wheels, wide wheels, for each type of skating all the way to the present wheel which in contrast to the first wheel is surprisingly around the exact same size but with a radius edge and cores. After he spoke, next up was Connor Welles, Hard Goods Development Coordinator at NHS. His parents were in the audience and it was nice to see their big smiles. He talked about the process of getting skateboard products manufactured and working with product managers. Next was Don Bostick who?s life was guided by his skateboarding passion. Fourth on the panel was Erik Florio - CEO and Founder Whagaa/Go Learn to Skate Apple iphone application which is based in Scotts Valley. Erik talked about the early days of wanting to do apps before the iPhone and his connection with DK and how his app went to number one for a month on itunes.

I was next and talked about skateboarding and design and showed a short Powerpoint presentation. I talked a bit about when I graduated from San Jose State University back in the mid 80?s and how I worked at the Santa Cruz Surf Shop (the same shop NHS started) as manager, buyer, airbrushed surfboards and met many owners of surf and skate brands. One of my graphic design teachers, Russell Leong, encouraged me to use my action sports connections to start my own business Maximum Impact Design. During my presentation I showed an Electronic Arts ad that was a rough sketch design and then the finished product and how it was all done via oldschool mechanical art.

Last but not least on the panel was DK (Danny Keith) or Ricky Danny if you are on twitter or listen to KDON. He spoke about his Grind for Hunger non-profit, running a retail skate business and his love for skating and how it has driven his life. There was always this underlying tone of skate and passion with everyone?s talks. I hope the stories get spread around so people can tell their kids. Santa Cruz skateboard changed lives and will forever be changing lives in the future.

Thank you to all the sponsors for supporting this event. Santa Cruz Skateboard, Santa Cruz Skate Shop, NextSpace, Fringe, Khiro Skateboard Products and Parachute Design

wisdom and maturity?

thats called "the great north american way". its not about wisdom or maturity or any of that shit. he explains how he never wants to work a day in his life and will do anything to keep it that way i.e. he's fuckin lazy and never developped a proper work ethic. like i said before he woke up one day, realised that "oh shit i skate for a team that still expects gnarly shit from their riders, well that's cool i will just say "im unhappy" and move to a team where they could care about what i put out, as long as i sell boards (which i will)".

and dont give me any of this "pick your battles shit". reynolds need to beat the fuck outta of appleyard. the guy runs his own board company, HAS A FAMILY and puts out video parts that set the bar for street skating higher and higher. and here's appleyard (who's younger than reynolds) realising his timex isnt a rolex and BMW 3-series isnt a 7series. its all about getting as much money and doing as little as possible. again, fuck him.

oh and as for living with my parents, when i graduated from high school last year i moved to berlin, and currently live here, so go fuck yourself you stupid fuck.

Let me guess... you're still living with your parents, right?

What he actually said in that interview was that he loves skating so much he doesn't want to get hurt doing a bunch of carcass tossing. He's older now & has to choose his battles more. He also said that he's realized he likes nice stuff and is starting to get that if he doesn't make some wise money choices now, he's gonna end up working some job he hates after skating is over for him.

This is called wisdom and maturity.

Your post indicates that you're a long way from either.

i.e. he's fuckin lazy and never developped a proper work ethic.

how many covers has appleyard had?  It looks like within his profession he's had great work ethic.  It's not an accident that his name is worth so much.....and how is Flip not corporate???  You don't think they have corporate guys pulling their strings??...taking a once legitimate company and reducing it to shit by marketing it to kids (making the same mistake Blind did).  XTREMELY SORRY HAD A SOUNDTRACK CD!!! BY A SHITTY ELECTRONICA ARTIST!!!  I'd say that's pretty fucking corporate.  The only real difference between the two companies is one has WAY more money than the other.

Looks like Element is cleaning up their team and Appleyard is a nice touch.

Rowley will always be one of my favorites but that 'message from the Flip family' should of been one of thanks for Appleyards 9+ years of service, not a childish stunt like that was posted.  The lack of support on here for that proves it was flop.  Massive shame for them.

wisdom and maturity?

thats called "the great north american way". its not about wisdom or maturity or any of that shit. he explains how he never wants to work a day in his life and will do anything to keep it that way i.e. he's fuckin lazy and never developped a proper work ethic. like i said before he woke up one day, realised that "oh shit i skate for a team that still expects gnarly shit from their riders, well that's cool i will just say "im unhappy" and move to a team where they could care about what i put out, as long as i sell boards (which i will)".

and dont give me any of this "pick your battles shit". reynolds need to beat the fuck outta of appleyard. the guy runs his own board company, HAS A FAMILY and puts out video parts that set the bar for street skating higher and higher. and here's appleyard (who's younger than reynolds) realising his timex isnt a rolex and BMW 3-series isnt a 7series. its all about getting as much money and doing as little as possible. again, fuck him.

oh and as for living with my parents, when i graduated from high school last year i moved to berlin, and currently live here, so go fuck yourself you stupid fuck.

The fact that he's a talented skateboarder shouldn't mean that he has to put out x amount of footage to please you and his peers, he can do whatever he likes.

As I suspected, you've barely been on your own at all. Your attitude is pretty typical of teenagers.

In another 15 years, when you start realizing that your body isn't going to hold up as well as Reynolds and that a shitty, mind-numbing job is likely in your future, you might decide it's a good idea to sock away some dollars for doing what you love. If you're lucky enough to even be in that situation, which is unlikely.

You might also realize that taking care of yourself and your family is more important than pleasing fools on message boards who barely have their mother's tit out of their mouth.

what are you like the responsible father of slap? skateboarding is so fucking business oriented these days it fuckin sucks. youve got guys like appleyard getting these retirement packages basicly. i guess im just bummed to see the industry go this way. its great to see people getting paid for what they love, but its also giving people a chance to just use there name to sell boards and thats good enough for them.

appleyard could probably never even need to get a photo for element. his ads are all probably going to be him holding his new baord with his name on it with that stupid fucking smile on his face. appleyard could never last on a company like REAL. thank god for companies like them. REAL would kick his lazy ass off so fast if he wasnt producing quality photos and footage. he should just fucking retire. look at heath. he realized he didnt want the aches and pains and stress anymore and he retired like A FUCKING MAN. not pussy fucking bitch move like appelyard. fuck you appleyard and your stupid retirement home. its straight up isnt about skateboarding anymore for this guy. just money plain and simple. dont beleive me? read his thrasher interview posted in the upper realm of this thread. thanks for reminding us all of how shitty and corporate skateboarding has become mark. go fuck yourself.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, in our faggy new world, a bunch of chumps whining on an internet message board now qualifies as "the streets."

I was referring to shop managers and owners, as well as a large amount of skateboarders complaining, discussing and criticizing certain parts of element (ie footwear, weak team promotion etc,) to various reps and sales managers when deciding not to order from them. If these people had nothing to do with directly ordering from Element, word travels, and opinions are often shared. Element responded with TRIO, the end of their footwear line and the introduction of very well respected pros. I'm sorry that this message board is the first thing you reference when you read a comment like mine.

Did you get a boner after posting this?  Look, nobody gives a shit.  We don't want to look at photos of this long-haired kid who worships Satan.  That about sums it up.  If you want to trash corporate shmucks who think good marketing is a girly-haired Satan-worshiper, go for it, but don't pull the "I walked six miles to school back in the day" B/S on here.  We're talking about skateboarding.  It's not that important; it's not life and death.  It's a piece of wood kids push around while the rest of the world actually gets shit done.

Basically, you should reconsider your life purpose.  If you're core enough.

Once again some clueless fuck is throwing his clueless two cents in. Post up some shirtless picks of Sheck since a long haired kid who worships satan scares him so much. If all skating is to you is a piece of wood that kids push around on while the rest of the world gets shit done then you obviously don't get it and never will. Trade the board in for fruit boots, you'd be more at home on them. I've been riding a skateboard longer than I haven't and I owe everything to skateboarding. It's what keeps me sane and made me who I am today. Maybe one day you'll find the passion we all have for this piece of wood that kids push around on and dislodge your head from your buttocks.

could you at least make your stupidity a little more concise.  i get thanked by SMART people everyday for shutting up stupid people like you.  so everyone at nhs is devoted to skateboarding, so the vast majority of their companies make excellent skate product and sponsor rippers, so they are not a corporately owned business.  shit doesn't matter cause they make surfboards and snowboards so they are just as bad as billabong.  the bottom line is i am a crusader for core companies and intelligence on the slap board; it's my job to to make sure that the truth is heard and i am supremely qualified to do this because my opinion is the truth.  if you want to argue with me i can post some messages ive received from smart people thanking me for what i do.

I cant believe I just wasted my time reading this entire thread. I'm dumb founded how anyone could compare NHS and Billabong. Get a fucking clue. People are so up in arms over Flip posting that pic. Skateboarding is so PC and watered down now it hurts. Skating back in the day was full of this shit and it was funny and awesome. None of you fuck heads would know that cause like said in an earlier post you're just barley off your mothers tit. Apples bounced to get paid to a corporately owned brand, fact. Flip is a part of NHS. It is not corporately owned, fact. Whether they have some surf shit under their umbrella or not, Novak fucking owns it. Bob Denike is the CEO/President. He skated across the fucking united states back in the early 80's and could shred a pool like no body's biz. Jeff Kendall is the Vice Prez. Do I have to educate you on who he is. You do have a legitimate point. However, they do make sporting goods equipment outside of skateboards, and generally making surfboards and sponsoring a surf team puts you in the "surf industry," so if they wanted to criticize element, perhaps they should have gone a different route.
Also, if everybody lays down, arches their back, and keeps all movement below the elbow, a ripple-less circle jerk could be achieved.
And with all the shit talking on him, I still back David. Dude has too cool of a backstory to dislike him for something so minor.

i bet he is so relieved!
also could you please make a list of rules which can govern a formula that evaluates the legitness of all companies and their distributors.  for example you said billabong is no worse than nhs. so that formula could be B(billabong)=N(NHS) or possibly B>N (as your statement left open the possiblity they are better than NHS).  if we know that B<S(selfish skateboards) (this is not a gip approved opinion but rather a possible example) than we could figure out without even having you tell us that N<S.  im sure you could go even further and create complicated formulas and obviously expand on the rules (since you make them!) and this would be very helpful for idiots who want to know if their opinion is right or wrong without you telling them.  it could also save you some time in your heroic work of shutting up stupid people.

not really, 'this shit' nowadays seems to be people that are corporate but don't know what corporate means saying something is bad because it is corporate.

world didn't go at powell because it was a corporation, they did it because powell was fucking gay and embarrassing. like flip.
and a bit just because they wanted to make some money too.

This is the kind of attitude I'm talking about! DAmn. There definitely used to ads like that all the time way back in the day, those were the lifestyle ads.

[/quote]

You are so core dude.  Fucking core.

It's not skateboarding that kept you sane, it's the friends you make as a skater.  Fucking people.  How old are you?

I think I'm going to start a really ridiculously core company.  I will ask that my riders injure themselves regularly on comically large spots and I will pay them nothing. Literally nothing. The kids will love it.
