Title: Steve Olson
Post by: smokecrack on December 29, 2010, 09:37:09 PM
one of my favorite skateboarders of all time. his Fulfill The Dream part is so classic and still sick to this day. made me love Gangstarr and Gravediggaz. here's some of his parts in order from most recent (so many people slept on Guilty. his skating and song choice were amazing once again.)

He was my first favorite skater.  I remember being really confused when I first heard that Alex Olson was the son of Steve Olson.

Let's not forget this part. Probably my favorite of his. SO good.

I remember in High School chemistry class there was an extra assignment to make a mole, and the person who had the best theme for their mole would get even more extra credit. I made "Steve Moleson" and gave him a fro, glasses, and turqoise blue shoes. I was the only skater in the school, so I lost, despite bringing a picture of the actual Steve Olson which made kids in my class laugh when they saw mine. "The mole formerly known as Prince" won by a longshot.

Never the less, Steve Olson is the shit. That switch 360 flip photo down the stairs is crazy, looks like an inward heel the way his front foot is kicked so far over.

Definitely one of the radest skateborders.

First time I saw him in Shorty's Guilty. I was like 14 or 15 then, just started skating, I was watching his part and thought "Who is this crazy guy???" Also the song was so sick, I somehow liked his part.

Some time later I saw footage or photo of him skating Slam city jam in Vancouver in orange jumpsuit, so rad.

i'd never seen that before, sick as fuck. i liked how he talked to the camera at the same spot where sheffey talked/grunted at the camera.

i remember seeing him messing around skating a car park once and being completely amazed by the stuff he was doing.

I seriously tripped out at this when I first saw it, it seemed so harebrained and ridiculous, of a shingled slanted roof onto a wooden handrail. I would say you don't see this kind of thing anymore but actually you didn't see it back then either...

shit, Steve was way ahead of his time. a lot of those tricks are so damn gnarly to this day. i had seen some of that footage, but not that whole part. thanks for finding it, Gipper.

stoked that you guys are still hyped on him too. i feel like he never got the credit he deserved.

here's the unavoidable question: what's he up to now?

Steve still lives in washington state and works at a friends small skate shop, last I heard he was focusing on his music.I've seen him pushing around downtown. He really got soured on the industry, it sounded like things ended badly with creation skateboards and satori but that was 2nd hand so who knows what really went down. I watched steve progress first hand in tacoma in the early 90s.He was doing crazy shit noone had even thought of yet.Fakie big inward heels,bs 270 flip lipslides,fs 360 ollie lateshoves(540?)and too many others.Dude was always super weird, but in a cool way.Lived in a tree house and gave all his flowed product to family and friends. He had a crazy style that you had to see in person to truly appreciate.

It probably is an inward heelflip. And he's regular so it's not switch...

I always appreciated Steve Olson back when, best ever is going a little far, but he always did sick shit with crazy style. I saw him show up at Santee skate park sometime around '98 though and must've been having a really shitty day, struggling to 50-50 a short funbox rail and doing some little switch pop shuvits. I've skated with enough pro's to not expect a demo every session, but I'd seen so much of his coverage I was hoping he'd break off some crazy stuff. Meanwhile Josh Kasper was landing practically everything he tried and the Goodtimes guys, Matt Moffett and such were destroying the place as usual. Like I said, I didn't expect anything, but was hoping to see his talent first-hand. Oh well, I hope he's happier now, it sucks when great skaters like that get burnt out and practically disappear after only a couple years.

Is there any little skate clip of him over the last, let’s say, 13 years?

Did he completely stop?
It’s crazy to me that someone with this status stops.
Then again he might have thought better to leave as a legend, when he’s not into it that much anymore anyway.

I watched some of that raw footage that the Shortys filmer posts up and couldn't believe that he did the roof drop to boardslide from Fulfil the Dream three times!! Each clip had something wrong with- a glitch, a car driving past, janky filming etc

I’ve always hoped they’d get Steve Olson (90s Foundation & Shortys). I skated with him several times in 90/91 and he was so good and truly original.

Steve Olsons ender in Guilty.  Hands down the craziest trick I've seen in person.  Not only the makes, but the misses.  He would tightrope walk down the rail every time he missed.  Not only that, he pretty much focused his back on the last kink of the rail.  He was down, we all thought he was possibly paralyzed.  Then, I shit you not, he puts his hands together in a prayer like motion, starts kind of moving around in a circle on the ground, pops up to his feet, waxes his board and lands it next try.  We were in total shock.  Later I asked him what exactly happened back there with the slam and he casually replies, "I just had to heal myself."  They don't call him the crazy monk for no reason....

lil b and Olson CAME THROUGH for Guilty. Smolik and Baptista went pretty hard too. Muskas part is decent. If they just didnt do all that goofy acting stuff that video would have held up way better. That video got really hyped up and it was impossible to top fulfill the dream unfortuantely.

Saw this guy on 3rd street by Joan’s as my girlfriend and I were driving by.  I tried to explain who that was, and how wild it is to have a living legend just walking around looking like some random guy undetected, but that’s just skateboarding for you.
