Basically, Thelonious Monk is the man.
he's the only person who has stood out to me but i haven't really dove into the artists too much
i got into it during college working on homework in coffee shops. these days i'll usually start a pandora station based on thelonious.

Fuck yeah, glad someone made this thread! I have been needing some new jazz to listen to. I have only been listening to it for 4 years maybe so I am not really well versed on lots of artists. I have listened to a lot of material on the ones I do know about. Here are some of my favorite songs by some of my favorite artists.
Ko-ko (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_ZajJd-1kY#)
Cal Tjader - Soul Sauce (1964) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-M1teNsDT4#)
"The Pan Piper" by Miles Davis & Gil Evans (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAQ3yxNH7A4#)
Dizzy Gillespie - Manteca - 1970 - Denmark.m4v (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBWrLXDKixM#)
edit: I changed the video for "Manteca". I prefer the above recording.
Thelonious Monk - Evidence - Japan (1963) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qweSlfP6BtI

Symphony Sid was a Jazz radio DJ back in the day. My father worked under him @ a radio station in Florida during the 1970's. Sid had a wicked temper and was known for throwing vinyl records around the radio station. (If you watch the beginning of the movie "Private Parts" about Howard Stern there's a scene with Symphony Sid having a temper tantrum in a radio station.)
RIP Symphony
