i worked full time for a skateshop / park that gave me health benefits.

as for company / team rider relations, this is definitely something i want to learn / need to know more about.

this makes me really happy. I wish more companies would be like that.

i know BakerBoys/Crailtap companies take good care of their riders. pretty much any company with that true "family" atmosphere is most likely gon have their riders backs. I know Plan B has all their riders livin lavish, & that janoski would not be as rich if he were another shoe company.

DLX treats their employees right.  I've heard Blackbox does also.

I know someone who worked at Satori briefly, he said they were weird and clique-ish.

I heard DLX don't pay their riders that much. I have no actual facts, that's just what I heard. But I can believe it since most of the people on DLX get the whole package: board + wheels + trucks, so maybe you get three salaries combined into one, which is better than just one of a board company, but less than if it was paid by three different companies from diferent groups. Furthermore you can't complain too much or else you loose all your sponsors at once (i.e. Tosh Townend back in the Element Days).

Skaters are independent contractors, they are not employee's.

I heard Girl and Chocolate are awful to their employees. No one leaves because they all have Stockholm syndrome. Jereme Rogers was the only one who saw the light.

Skaters are independent contractors, they are not employee's.

But, as you know, skate companies have employees that are not professional skateboarders.

I've always wondered if these companies provide health benefits to their employees/contractors, etc...? Anyone know what the word on that? The premiums are probably astronomical if they do.

I think in the Christmas Skate Talk Jerry Hsu mentions that his sponsors pay for his health insurance, but didn't mention which sponsors.

Im guessing that isnt the case with Tim O'Connor and Adidas. He was getting surgeries and such on his ankle and they still dropped him.

I would think that DLXSF treat their employees well, and then probably Blackbox was well.

knew a few dudes who worked in the warehouse at black box, and others doing different things at the different brands, and they all had nothing but great things to say about it.

same with a guy who worked in the element art department.

You have to look at skating like it doesn't owe you anything, in that respect skate companies will hook you up.

Hasn't manager dude at DLX shop been there for 20 years?  I figure he must be getting paid OK to stay that long.
Nice dude, by the way.

i've been told them dc checks can be life changing, comparable to winning the lottery.

got a few good friends who have been with dlx for years and have been able to produce some great things.

Geez; do I look that old?  ;) Thanks, man.

I've been there 10.5 years roughly. I'm pretty content, obviously. Benefits aren't as amazing as my wife's corporate gig, but I have benefits, and there's all sorts of perks as one might imagine. I'm not a wealthy man, but I love my career and can support my family doing it, so I consider myself a very lucky man.

I think everyone's gettin it twisted, the thread is about employees for a skateboarding brand. NOT team riders, as James said team riders are independent contractors which means they literally work for themselves.

is this how the skaters feel? i feel like a lot of them would be insulted if their home companies thought of them as that interchangeable

Sorry this is long but I hope it sheds some light to people who are unfamiliar with what some of this stuff means. If you already know about or don't care about independent contractors, don't bother reading this. If you plan on being a sponsored skater, read the basic tips below and do a lot of research before signing anything. Definitely hire a lawyer to review and help negotiate the contract if you can.

Being an independent contractor doesn't mean you're interchangeable. You still enter into a work/compensation agreement with a company and sign a contract, but you are not an actual employee of that company, you're essentially freelance (but have agreed to criteria similar to that of an employee). I'd also bet that not every company uses the contractor system, some might actually be employees, I don't know.

For the contractor this means a few things- they generally invoice their work and the invoices get processed and paid out in full (no tax deductions). Because the skaters are essentially their own business entity, they are expected to claim and pay tax on their income in a lump sum at the end of the year instead of the company deducting it incrementally from each paycheck. This is why many paid skaters have tax problems. Since you are not an employee the company is not required to provide health insurance either, as it would for someone on full time payroll. This is why many skaters don't have health insurance, it's their responsibility to purchase it themselves.

A smart independent independent contractor factors these things in when negotiating pay:
1.) Tax rate. Independent contractors are taxed at a higher percentage of income. Expect to pay 30-40% of your income back at tax time. As a business entity though, you can also claim many, many more basic expenses. A smart contractor can actually do well during tax season, but most get bent over because they don't know how to make the system work for them. I hire game testers as independent contractors. Because of that I choose to offer them $14-15/hr instead of a standard $11-12 because I know they will have high taxes. However, many companies won't do that and will try to save money on people who don't understand the contractor agreement by paying them an industry standard wage.
2.) Cost of privately purchased health insurance. Don't outright say you skate for money, you would never be able to afford the premium. Use tactful wording and say something like you're an independent advertising/promotions specialist. :p

Generally speaking, companies can choose to offer insurance and other benefits to contract employees, but they're not required to, and I don't know if independent contractors would be eligible (it's different than being a "contract employee," which is generally someone filling a temporary position but they get paid and taxed like a regular employee).

I'm bumping this cause this is actually some cool shit I'd like to hear more about. I'm a designer and have worked with and for a few brands and have many friends that do the same, and I've heard lots of different things. Not to badmouth any company on here, but I've had some experiences through myself and my friends that hasn't always spoken very highly of the way companies sometimes treat their employees, or deal with the sagging sales of this economy. That being said, beyond rumors who's good to their workers? Who doesn't have the standard dope job paycut in their salaries? Where's a place where a kid can become a lifer?
