Yes and no. Shoegaze straddles a line somewhere between heavenly ethereal nirvana and self-serving faux-artistic mass produced hipster garbage. Of course, on what side of that line whatever one's favorite band is on is up to the listener. What the fuck am I talking about again? Here's a shoegaze blog with download links: http://teenshoegaze.blogspot.com/ (http://teenshoegaze.blogspot.com/)

My Bloody Valentine.

Huge fan. I agree with most of what L33Tg33k said but you can't go wrong with the classics
anything on Factory Records or Captured Tracks (for newer bands) or Sarah Records (if you're more of a twee/janglepop guy)
personal favorites:
Galaxie 500
Ride
Pale Saints
The Lilys
Jesus And Mary Chain
Pure X is pretty much my favorite of the newer bands. Big Troubles, Craft Spells, Wild Nothing are worth a listen too
Pure Ecstasy - Voices (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfWwnhdB_-U#)
-
Ride - Like A Daydream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrDHXLBtIA8#)
Slowdive - Allison (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ol787NjpBS4#)
The Jesus and Mary Chain- Darklands (Video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfyPZ6YHJpU&feature=related#)
The Field Mice - Emma's House (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIppK6kDCUM#)
-
Dif Juz - No Motion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUbQiUv1QHo#)
Sleep ∞ Over - Casual Diamond (OFFICIAL VIDEO) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_L_NN7sS_Y#)
Screen Vinyl Image - Slipping Away (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4nyjAXCuEg#ws)
The Soft Moon - Total Decay [Official Video] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlTxrlkKzyI&feature=related#ws)
-
My Bloody Valentine.
-
that's really the only one you ever need to listen to.
The Bilinda Butchers are good modern one.
Captured Tracks did a bunch of rereleases
-
Ween is definitely not a shoegaze band but this song fits the genre (at least with the fuzzy guitars)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYTpU80KYpU
-
This takes me back to the good days. Ride are my all time faves but Thousand Yard Stare, Captain America, Slowdive and Eugenious are places to start.
-
I'm a fan of shoegaze but I really think Ride are terribly overrated. They do have one or two songs that are ok but on the whole I think they just sound like an annoying brit pop band with boring songs and lyrics done up with some shoegazey guitar sounds. Am I alone in this?
I also think Lilys are pretty corny for the most part but the first 5/6 songs off this album ("In the Presence of Nothing") are pretty great.
Lilys - There's No Such Thing As Black Orchids (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJJ3ujvWoYU#ws)
Lilys - Collider (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWGhnJufmks#)
-
Fair enough. For me ginger and the rest of that album strays too far into bland '90s alt. rock territory. If you like My Bloody Valentine I don't see how you could not like that first album though.
-
Flying Saucer Attack - My Dreaming Hill (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLzjsJgIUhs#ws)
Another Sunny Day - Anorak City (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVrUTykc7Qk#)
Black Tambourine - By Tomorrow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKQNOtSl6RM#)
-
the best lilys song is ginger, worked so well in bag of suck. they have a couple of okay songs, the rest i can't get into. after hearing ginger i thought the rest of their stuff was going to be amazing.
YEAH!
-
the best

these guys are great, too:

never really considered JAMC shoegaze... if anything i guess you could say it led to that sound, but it itself isn't really. also, i love ride the best out of all the shoegazers, i couldn't disagree more about them being overrated. going blank again is a flawless album start to finish. you guys named a lot of good ones, but i'll add lush and the boo radleys. two underrated shoegazers. the boo's lightened up their sound after a bit, and got even better. when you're done droning to the early stuff, check out giant steps... it's a masterpiece!

Bump, who's excited for MBV's new album? Has anyone seen them live? They're coming to Australia next year for the first time in 20 years
Seen MBV live 3 times. Awesome, but super loud so bring ear plugs.
Fair enough. For me ginger and the rest of that album strays too far into bland '90s alt. rock territory. If you like My Bloody Valentine I don't see how you could not like that first album though.
I'll have to check it out, is it "Eccsame The Photon Band" you're talking about? I must of been listening to their later stuff.
In the Presences of Nothing and Eccsame the Photon Band are the The Lilys best albums IMHO.
After that they get kind of brit pop, which is not bad, but not shoegaze if that's what you looking for.
The last 2 albums Lilys released were mediocre at best.

glad to see this thread exists!
Tamaryn - Mild Confusion (http://youtu.be/FHlCygXAxdM)

I am also very, very stoked on the slap community right now. this is my favorite genre easily.
i've just been listening to a shitload of no age. while it's not exactly shoegaze, i feel they took A LOT from MBV (in the best way possible, of course) in a lot of their songs
Glitter - No Age (Music Video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3_t3q1tjH4#ws)
also, dont know if it was mentioned. but A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS is my go to, ragetastic shoegaze
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_Epv7j0v8U (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_Epv7j0v8U)
this whole new album "onwards to the wall" is really good in its entirety, so is their first self titled
-
New favorites:
Pale Saint's second album "In Ribbons"
Slowdive "Pygmallion" (these guys were always my least favorite of the gazers for some reason. could be the "britpop" influence. but this is great and moves them into more of an Eno-territory)
Medicine's first two albums are essential bits of heavenly noise.
Medicine " Never Click" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73_bmAZ7B-w#)
-
I don't know if Yo La Tengo can be classified as 'shoegaze' but they always sort of gave off the same vibe
Listening to the new album 'fade' right now and it's awesome
-
My Bloody Valentine - Cigarette In Your Bed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P82V5TEEVWc&list=FLvaeayE2ZKqXOYv022H9ilg#ws)

Man, I'm loving this thing. Maybe one or two duds but the rest is just splendid. Between this and the Foxygen album 2013 will truly be a good year for music.

Man Im loving the album!!!
I would be embarrassed if I was in a MBV copy band right now.... They put them back in their place.

Songs like this make me glad I have ears.
Shameless plug: I edited a little skating clip to that song Extra 2/? on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/50047052)
The new MBV-album is kind of like loveless 2, I love it. Its empowering music.

thanks dude, penny and brady are my favs
MBV seems to be about a re-constructed romance
the lover who's idea it was becomes apathetic once accomplished
-
Deerhunter!!! As well as Atlas Sound and Lotus Plaza.
-
Fuck yeah....saw Atlas sound and Lotus Plaza last year at p4k, deerhunter there 2 years ago. I like the new lotus plaza album, but the first one was waaaay sicker i feel. More shoegazey, ambient. I guess the one dood (locket sumthin) did it all by himself, but he had had a full band on the second one.
BUT THE NEW MBV, OMFG
I knew it would be diff than loveless, but man its sooo good. haters of that shit just dont know good music or there blinded by loveless nostolgia
ive synced it up that second song with jon allies slave part, goes too good with it. Is this and yes is my fav for sure.
p.s: i was watching kids in emerica at a buddies house this past weeknd, and realized that "sometimes" is the menu screen song. i freaked out when i heard it. if i only knew about em when i was a youngyin

Dude... that was sick. So many sweet spots and i loved the editing and the apartment skating at the end brings back memories. i'm definitely beyond being able to live in a place that i can destroy by skating in, but man do i miss turning hallways into mini ramps.

I haven't had a chance to listen to Locket's new album. And I've only listened to a few tracks from Parallax. But the first two albums from Atlas and Lotus' first album are some great works.
How was it seeing Deerhunter live? They're one of the bands that I still have yet to see...
-
Lotus Plaza is fucking amazing. I saw them in Raleigh last year. One of the best shows I went to all year. I like the band Whirr, theyre pretty sick new shoegaze stuff
-
"Yellow Loveless" is a compilation of Japanese bands covering every song off loveless. This is by far my favorite track on there.

^^gtfo....lol j/k. Give it a few more listens man, you'll get it.
But mr deputy, I missed a majority of that deerhunter set. I was into em at the time, but lets just say I hadn't listened to "weird era" in its entirety yet, so I left early to go see toro y moi's set, Which was sick but I still wished I stayed. Then the following year I saw both atlas and lotus plaza and they both bout melted my face, so good. But id def check out both new ones, both good considering how awesome there predecessors were.
Anyone here into gang gang dance?

Any SF heads without anything to do tonight: there's a shoegaze show at the Hemlock. The Laurels, Fleeting Joys, and Moonbeams. I'll be there. I don't know the other two, but Fleeting Joys are amazing.

The first 2 Lush albums, when they were produced by Robin from the Cocteau Twins are my favorite shoegaze albums, also been listening to some new shit like The School of Seven Bells, they have a very 90s shoegaze sound and Grimes has some really cool stuff too.

I've been really into Moon Duo lately. Not sure if they fit this category. Also Wooden Shjips. I guess they're related. Does this post belong in this thread?

Had the amazing opportunity to fly to Manchester and see My Bloody Valentine there. Was so incredibly loud indoors, people who didn't know what to expect for when they play the holocaust section for 'you made me realise' were sooo bummed. A security guard said it was the worst noise he'd ever heard.
Luckily got to see them again in Barcelona at Primavera Sound recently, was in the 1st row right in front of Kevin shields. I can check that one off my bucket list. My favorite band of all time.
Saw a bit of MBV yesterday at FYF fest in LA. Huge crowd so I didn't even bother trying to push forward. Me and the crew left after technical difficulties (we were tired as shit). But otherwise great live sound, outdoor at that. It was great hearing songs from loveless
Aw man, you should've stuck around. The rest of the set was rad. Such glorious noise on You Made Me Realise!
If it was my call, I probably would have. In any case, it's one of those bands I gotta sit in the front for at a single show, so I'll get to see a full set eventually ;D. I was perfectly fine seeing someone like YYY from the back though.

I didn't stick around for them unfortunately. It was so fucking crowded on Saturday, I was just over it. I don't like festivals in the first place, and that day was just stupid crowded.

I've been lurking on this forum for years and never clicked on the music tab til today. Such a huge Shoegaze fan and theres a ton of bands in this thread I've never heard and can't wait to check out. Glad to see people still talking about the Boo Radleys...Giant Steps and Everything's alright forever are classics for sure.
Though not 100% shoegaze, Diiv and Wild Nothing are the 2 bands I've been listening to the most over the last year and a half. My girl is in Brooklyn for the Captured Tracks festival this weekend and I'm hating that I'm not there.

I caught a few of their songs at FYF, but wasn't too worried as I knew I would get to see them in SF on Monday. They played Great American for like two hours and it was fucking awesome...and I'm from Atlanta and used to see them all the time, so that's saying something. Bradford fucking around with Frankie Broyles was hilarious.
I heard the Bill Graham MBV show wasn't great?

I saw DH from the beer tent, great stuff. Bradford was indeed pretty funny during the Breeders set :D
Damn, so I guess they're gonna be giving out ear plugs at every gig MBV plays out?
I haven't been to a festival in years, and the guys I went with were pretty much on the same boat as me. After Sunday we all agreed we hate festivals haha

Seeing them live, it's very reminiscent of MBV's live shoes. I do agree that not all of their music fits neatly into traditional shoegaze, but it's the feel and overall aesthetic.
They are one of my favorites.
-
After seeing MBV twice, once at a huge outdoor festival and once at a medium size indoor venue, I have to say that they're probably better outdoors. Seems ridiculous to say but the reverberation from all that sound bouncing off the walls tends to muddy things quite a bit.
Anyway, here's a shoegazey video for y'all. One of my favourite bands. Apparently all the sounds are made with nothing but guitars and effects.

BEST ALBUM FROM THE COOLEST BAND EVER
-
The first 2 Lush albums, when they were produced by Robin from the Cocteau Twins are my favorite shoegaze albums, also been listening to some new shit like The School of Seven Bells, they have a very 90s shoegaze sound and Grimes has some really cool stuff too.
Fuck yeah Natenola. Just saw this thread for the first time. Can't believe it took until page 3 for someone to mention Lush, and that no one mentioned them for the next two pages. They're one of the first bands considered shoegaze (and for me one of, if not the best), and I always assumed one of the most well known. Spooky is an unreal album to hump to.
Lush - Stray (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3meEXt-5NI#)
Lush - Superblast! (Official Video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uU5DU7P83E#)
-
MY FAV LUSH SONG :)
Lush - Nothing Natural (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XlP794_aCU#)
-
would always get psyched when LUSH vids were on 120 minutes
this is a classic
Pale Saints - Sight of You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbr-7D7gx9U#)
also, MBV worship, but done well
Astrobrite - Crasher (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oT8j3VY58K0#)
-
Love that Astrobrite song.
-
Skywave - All I Had (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inZf9Boq7-Q#)
This is so good.

Thanks to the guys here introducing me to Whirr
Whirr - Flashback (Live at Part Time Punks) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTAc1he9gHo#)

Slowdive and Asobi Seksu are some pretty good shoegaze stuff that I've been listening to on the regs lately.
-
Alcian Blue Translucent (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15kF-gApCWE#)

Feeling that Alcian Blue.
-
This one is good too
Alcian Blue - Silver's Sleep Walk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcRAfLMfE-A#)

Two pretty good forgotten 'gaze singles. From a indie UK chart show. Super nostalgia!

Here are a few gems. I don't know if anyone has mentioned the "I Was a Teenage Shoegazer" blog, but if you're trying to download rare singles and such from the era- that's your place.
Lush - Desire Lines (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyTLiMPQI8Y#)

Bleach - Trip & Slide (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiDKqSaO1Mw#)

Swallow are a gem. There were so many of these fucking bands in the UK during the 90's that time would've forgot if it wasn't for the internet
the bassist from Primal Scream fronted this one.
Spirea X - Chlorine Dream (Official Video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdVeqqKKgYs#)
not Revolver's best song but the vid is pretty cool.
Revolver - Cradle Snatch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVxjvzJ9f_M#)

I dont feel it. Too much bass and full sound for shoegaze. I like my shoegaze leaning towards punk mostly than metal.

Thanks for posting this band, Tufty. That whole Echodrone album is really good, but I can't get into their later album Synthstatic at all.

I'm bumping this because one fateful day while bored out of my mind in 1992, drawing and listening to Robert Lewis Stevenson radio, I heard "Sometimes" and it blew my mind out of my skull. I've been a daytripper ever since.
So, I'm throwing a few more on the pile:

A genre that I'm admittedly not super familiar with. Here's some stuff that may or may not have been mentioned.
Swirlies (My favorite besides the obvious masters Ride and My Bloody Valentine)
Swirlies - In Her Many New Found Freedom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3GTDg_nmPI#)
Chapterhouse (Their record "Whirlpool" is one of the best, but unfortunately the only one of theirs I like)
Chapterhouse - Breather (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YtB4kxfQPs#)
Drop Nineteens (Literally, this is the only song of theirs I like and it's from a demo, but it's so fucking good it deserves mention)

sometimes I enjoy this as much as the actual MBV album...mainly during the summer months
Japancakes Loveless: Loomer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tgp_GbYs9ZM#)
Yeah that's gotta be one of the best covers album.
I enjoy shoegaze music, but I feel like what I'm really saying is "I love MBV"
I like Cocteau Twins, Lush, Ride, Kitchens of Distinction, and some others, but I feel like what MBV did was just so above everybody else, I don't listen to the other bands nearly as much.
My favorite current acts that use shoegaze elements in their music, are Atlas Sound and The Twilight Sad
The Twilight Sad - Cold Days from the Birdhouse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79pmP4FjnXc#)
I highly recommend listening to the above song. It's got to be one of my favorite opening tracks, and is amazingly intense.

I guess this belongs in here. A good friend of mine did put out a new single.
I played in band with him in a previous project, proud to see him doing great around the Danish undergound scene by now..

I'm with you on that I always liked whirr and I liked them a bit better with the female vocalist but sadly things with them were not working out well
-
I'm friends with their guitarist Nick. He has a couple side projects as well if you liked Whirr.
He has a side project with Alexandra who used to sing in Whirr. They're name is Camera Shy. Their full length is amazing. Really nice, soft music. Kind of in the vein of Best Coast / Camera Obscura. There is one song on the album that sounds like it could have been an old Whirr b-side because the guitar riffing screams Pipe Dreams.
He is also did these dope Misfits cover songs under the name Orange Hell. Not sure if it's also the girl from Camera Shy but it's basically a Whirr side project as well. I think it's supposed to be a secret that he did that stuff though :-X When you know that it kind of starts to make sense that the guitar tones and feel of the music are the way they are.
Aside from that, he was also in Deafheaven. Not sure if you're into that kind of music! Sorry for the novel!

Wouldn't call this shoegaze but it def has elements. This track's from his (Jefre Cantu-Ledesma) Love Is a Stream LP off Type, which is goood if you've never heard. I'll add Yellow Swans (albums: Drowner Yellow Swans and Going Places) to the list if you like this sort of thing. Belong's October Language is also solid. Goodnight Sweet Prince by Grasshopper too.
