Back in the late 90's/ early 2000's, there was a publication or a rumor, one of the two, about how Brazilians used steroids to perform better on their board. Again, don't quite remember which of the two it was but I do remember having a lengthy conversation with someone who was pretty adamant about it and swore it was true. They more or less used the idea of Brazilian skaters using steroids to explain the depths of what they would do to be the best at skating, which in turn could explain their huge presence during the late 90's/early 2000's.

Coke does make you lose weight, but if you stop doing huge rails or sweet hooters you gain a lot weight on the flipside of the coin. Just be patient and wait for a part to manifest or go to med school and diagnose him either way you will stop bitching for at least a little while. I sat and watched Pops skate a curb in Carroll Gardens for about half an hour in September last year. In no way did he look like he was on drugs. He was actually really enjoying himself. I am in no way defending Converse, and the way they fucked over Pops, but just to point out: this shoe has nothing to do with Converse retaining his design.
His shoe was based off of an old 70's model (the suede All Star or Jack Star), the same model this shoe is based on.
The white and blue suede ones are a special shoe produced in very small numbers by Converse, for Inventory. Inventory chose the model, and the materials and details.
Converse paid the tab. And put them out.
And it's not in the skate line.

That said, I do enjoy all the emotional and misguided anti corporate sentiment that gets spewed when people get so charged about the Converse stuff. Because, you know, "Pops" isn't a grade A flake or anything, right? I mean, no way in hell he could have possibly flaked from his responsibilities of having his name on a shoe contract belonging to a corporate giant. He wanted to play with the big boys and he fucked that up. No one to blame but himself. Pluhowski even made mention of it, "Pops" is milking a reputation.

I don't know if you're trolling, but my saying 'fuck Cons/Nike' was in response to evidence that Converse are still using Pappalardo's name to promote their footwear (furthermore, a shoe with his name on it) while barely paying him a dime. I'm not sure how that's misguided. He did play with the big boys and get burned - but the evidence keeps piling up that the larger shoe corps will do that fairly indiscriminately and frequently (Peter Hewitt is another recent example). Pros regularly getting fucked over by company shouldn't be something we come to expect in the skateboard industry. Ergo - Fuck Cons/Nike

Since it is the Converse Mexico Twitter Account, I am guessing they are pushing the remaining stock of the Pops shoe out of the US. Yes it's using Pop's name, but the circumstances are a little different. They are working on erasing his existence at Cons (while trying not to lose money on production), not attempting to continue to use his name. Regardless, I agree - Fuck Cons, Nike, Adidas, etc., etc.

Kickflip up a curb, bs nosegrind pop out on a weird metal barrier that was propped up against the side of a building and then bs 180 off the curb. All the tricks were really close together, kinda like a quick footed thing. The nosegrind was pretty high too and the edge looked like it would have been fucking up his truck pretty bad. The edge was kinda sharp. He did it really well though.

I couldn't tell what board he was riding (I sat across the road to not look like a weird fanboy) but didn't he say he was still getting boards from Chocolate and that he wouldn't have a pro board again until he started getting coverage? That was in the 48 Blocks interview though which was about 5 months ago, so things could've changed.

Everybody on Cons seems to be doing good. And yes, Pops definitely could've been doing shit to cause Cons to kick him off the team.

I refuse to skate Nike or CONS. I used to really dig Nike up until they started selling their stuff at the mall and basically became available everywhere. I had some CTS's and they were awful. I bought the Pappalardo shoe simply to support one of my favorite pros and they were good. Eventually I began to only skate Vans Sk8 highs but once in awhile, I would skate nikes or cons. After the 48 blocks interview, I refuse to skate CONS and after the Hewitt incident, I will not be buying Nikes, regardless of the fact my local skateshop just got the black and whgite Blazer highs in again. Pappalardo may have left some stuff out, whatever that may be, but I view the whole situation as a corporation taking advantage of a vulnerable individual who showed his true nature, skating, lifestyle and basically was beat in the end.

I wish people would stop likening being a professional skateboarder to working a regular job. They are not the same, they are not even similar. That's why in so many interviews you read "I feel sorry for my friends who have had to get real jobs, it sounds like it sucks" etc. Skateboarding is the little bubble world where you can fart out a 50-50 every few months to promote plimsoles and scrape by for years, or give it your all for decades and earn hundreds of thousands. Or give it your all and never get on a team.

Fuck me for saying anything. Yes, he didn't produce, but he clearly has a huge following and was the foundation of cons launching their skateshoe program. His name, followed with footage or not is an advertising device to enter a market. His name was on all the shoes that sold in what, 15 different colour-ways or something? You're not just paying for footage, you're paying for marketability when you hire a skateboarder on any team.

That is what I am saying. If there was a contract violation, Pops should just grab every penny he has and get a lawyer. To a certain degree, I am sure he fucked up and knows it and that's why he's just bitching about it. I want to say P-Rod got help from his celeb dad. I even remember when P-Rod Sr got interviewed at some old X-Games and the only thing he kept on shouting about was how he is so proud of his son and how he was signed by Nike. Like the Nike contract is what made him see this shit was just a bummy as kids past time. I would think in some way or form, P-Rod Jr ask his pops what's up with getting a fair contract since his dad has been through them a lot.

Was that a serious post? You can't be this naive. A video part would be really easy to explain to a P and L kind of person, actually. Video part = commercial for your product. That said, I am guessing it goes beyond footage. Whatever he was expected to deliver in his contract, clearly he wasn't delivering. If anyone thinks Converse would deliberately go out of their way to screw over Anthony Poppalardo they need to give their heads a shake and wake the fuck up. He was their guy and they probably expected to build everything around him.
Anyway, to the point about Converse losing business over this...not so sure I see that. I actually bought a pair of KA One's because I fully back Kenny Anderson. He is a pro in every sense of the word, and I'll support what he's involved with.

Was that a serious post? You can't be this naive. A video part would be really easy to explain to a P and L kind of person, actually. Video part = commercial for your product. That said, I am guessing it goes beyond footage. Whatever he was expected to deliver in his contract, clearly he wasn't delivering. If anyone thinks Converse would deliberately go out of their way to screw over Anthony Poppalardo they need to give their heads a shake and wake the fuck up. He was their guy and they probably expected to build everything around him.
Anyway, to the point about Converse losing business over this...not so sure I see that. I actually bought a pair of KA One's because I fully back Kenny Anderson. He is a pro in every sense of the word, and I'll support what he's involved with.

I wanted Poppalardo to have a part so badly I flew out to NY right when we started making this thing and we brought an extra HD camera. We spent an extra $12,000, met a filmer out there, trained him how to film and introduced him to Popps, the whole deal. I tried to get that going, but it never panned out.
Why didn?t it work out?
I don?t think he was into it. Maybe he just wanted to film with Bill and maybe Bill wasn?t filming HD at that time? I would talk to him and he?d say he?s down and wanted to, and had all these spots in mind. I put everything in place there, so if he wanted to film it was there.
Did he get any footage / tricks?
With that filmer and that camera, no. Not one thing.

He seems like he will be skating whether or not he is getting paid for it. Honestly, it sounds like he would enjoy skateboarding more if he wasn't getting paid for it and did what the rest of us do and have an income outside of skateboarding. Skateboarding is a lot of fun for me, and it helps me escape the dregs of everyday work. I would imagine if he wasn't so socially awkward, he could still be getting free boards from someone out there on some kind of bro-flow, sort of like how Mike York gets Lakai shoes sent to him.
