I'm a year out from a psych degree at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. I want to do art therapy for people with PTSD. Apparently I'd be better off going for a Master's, but I think I might find a job first and then look at getting my Master's of Social Work in a year or two.
From what I've been told by friends that have MSW's (and graduate degrees in general), it is a good idea to work for a few years before going back to school. It makes sense. You gain experience and knowledge that people who go straight for their Master's don't get.

If you have the means get it asap. It's easier when you're younger and already used to writing papers and doing coursework. You might doubt yourself during the first semester, but just do it. Believe me when you graduate again you won't regret it. I guess Im the type of person who if I put something off it never really gets finished. I could see going back to school as something to change your life up again and like someone said, you will have made contacts and have experience. I still say if you can swing it financially then just get it sooner than later. Don't even take the semester off, just go back at it.

This shit ain't a fucking pop quiz and neither is skateboarding. I don't like feeling like I am a performer and I don't expect everything that comes out of me to be sprinkled with genius or anything remotely resembling that. Fuck that shit.

I used to deliver pizza for a downtown italian eatery and I used to slow down to let those drunken frat boys cross the street when I was trying to get out of downtown to deliver. Each time they would take their sweet time and piss me off in the process. Since I drove stick, I learned that the best way to deal with them was to continue careening toward them in neutral and revving my engine like I was going to plow them down. Fuckers would run each time. I learned to apply this to everything that would bother me about them.

I get paid more than that, but I work nights in a Level 1 trauma hospital. Never had to deal with fecal impactions, but I've seen some crazy shit (I work in a neuro trauma unit). I can also insert a catheter in with the swiftness. Haha

There are a lot of good people here, but the majority here are numbnutted assholes and a great representation of skateboarders on the whole.
I get a kick out of two distinct groups...the lemmings and the cool guys. Lemmings will generally 'back' anything that a worthless asshole like Jason Dill puts out. If a certain pro's name is attached, it's backed. Even though said pro is a pile of garbage. Sheep.
The cool guys will usually chime in with something completely off topic, irrelevant and/or nonsensical whenever the conversation gets too heavy about the business side of skateboarding. As if to remind everyone how lame they are for talking about the $$$ side of skateboarding. They generally hate Nike, Adidas, Converse, etc...when their 'core' brands are doing the exact same thing - in principle - as the evil empires. Then, they wonder why skateboarders get taken advantage of in big business. It's for that exact reason...because their feeble little minds can't understand that even their biggest heroes are making money from skateboarding. They can barely manage their own checking account so they can't possibly feel comfortable talking about the role of money in skateboarding.

I'm a year out from a psych degree at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. I want to do art therapy for people with PTSD. Apparently I'd be better off going for a Master's, but I think I might find a job first and then look at getting my Master's of Social Work in a year or two.
A friend of mine has an MSW, used to work with kids at juvie. Got so burned out that he now just makes custom guitars. I think he makes more money now, too.

I have a bachelor's degree in nursing and and plan to continue my studies to become a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist).

I get paid more than that, but I work nights in a Level 1 trauma hospital. Never had to deal with fecal impactions, but I've seen some crazy shit (I work in a neuro trauma unit). I can also insert a catheter in with the swiftness. Haha

Michael Housers' son was my roommate until I transferred to GSU. Athens is fun and all but I dont really like the whole crunchy heady frat boy combo thing its got going on.
Well you got lucky then cause after being there for two years I about wanted to jump off the top of the GA theatre.
What would probably throw you for a loop these days is the new breed of frat boy. The druggie jam band loving frat boy. They like to talk about crystals, fractals, and also drink and haze. Nowhere Bar is full of those types. I can only explain to so many people why I don't worship Phish like everyone else in Athens.
Who dragged you to the Nowhere Bar? Roadhouse, Engine Room (or Emergency Room as I called it), Manhattan, and 40 watt was where I frequented. My college radio buddies would get me on the guest list for pretty much any show I wanted. I usually drank at my duplex or at neighbors/friends and wouldn't buy more than a pitcher outside.
My wife and I visited Athens last year and we both agreed we were lucky we went to school when we did.

I'm sorry they got to you. I used to deliver pizza for a downtown italian eatery and I used to slow down to let those drunken frat boys cross the street when I was trying to get out of downtown to deliver. Each time they would take their sweet time and piss me off in the process. Since I drove stick, I learned that the best way to deal with them was to continue careening toward them in neutral and revving my engine like I was going to plow them down. Fuckers would run each time. I learned to apply this to everything that would bother me about them.
You're a good man and more humane than me. I had a pack of frat fucks try to pull that with me but I kept driving. One of the dudes thought he was calling my bluff and kept on coming with his brosephs in tow. I ended up taking him out with my side mirror and checked in the rearview and saw him crumpled over on his knees in the street so I stopped and got out to see if he was ok while his buddies were helping him up. We started yelling at each, he was bitching about me hitting him and I was bitching about him cracking my mirror and smearing Hawaiian Tropic all over a public roadway and a crowd started to gather. The drama ended abruptly with mutual "fuck yous" but started to feel like there might be a riot with ol' Seamus mutilated body being paraded through the streets at one point.

Nah, I was by no means a good man at that point in my life. To be perfectly honest, depending on my mood, even after they took off running, sometimes I would turn my car in the direction they were running like I really wanted to run them down because I really wanted to run them down.

Despite my pic I do not attend Penn State but I'm currently going to enter my senior year at URI after transferring from Ithaca College and I'm a double major in Secondary Education and History. Its good to know a lot of other Slappers know or are currently shearing the struggles of being a skater and being a full time student. It sucks, as most of you would probably know, that being a student or even working (I work in a construction company over the summer) you can not get a lot of skating done on weekdays. Legit during the school year I pretty much only skate weekends if weather up here is actually decent, but what I'm curious about are how much better are kids who are college age who do not go to school? There is clearly an advantage I see depending on their job hours.
Yes I have been asked by some of the student I teach in Providence if they could skate with me, so damm awkward
real talk though I selected What!!!?!?! b/c honestly speaking we are constantly learning and that is one thing I love about being a teacher. You learn even more from the students than most believe. Also I hate those people who have the smartest person in the room vibe i.e Richie Jackson and usually those people are just compensating for something most likely regarding their ego

For the college shit- I went to two UCs. The first one didn't give grades but was located in a redwood forest next to the beach, which made it easier to get into than some other UCs, but smarter to go to because redwood forests and the beach are hella cool. The one I went to for my masters was ranked 3rd in the country for my program when I got in, then became 5th while I was there, and now apparently is ranked 8th. I like to take credit for that.

For the college shit- I went to two UCs. The first one didn't give grades but was located in a redwood forest next to the beach, which made it easier to get into than some other UCs, but smarter to go to because redwood forests and the beach are hella cool. The one I went to for my masters was ranked 3rd in the country for my program when I got in, then became 5th while I was there, and now apparently is ranked 8th. I like to take credit for that.

Yeah, going to school doesn't mean you are smart. What we need to do is break down the different types of aptitudes. Also, we have to understand what it means to be intelligent in any sense. It also helps to measure the varying modes of interpretation and expression. When we've covered those variables, we will assess cognitive states in relation to extrinsic stimulus. Then because of the disconnect between our cognitive minds and our emotional instincts as well as the individual experiences that we all have, we have to keep in mind that even though we are given similar information, we are also given differing information making it impossible to create a genuine contrast. But, we can always throw out information that "smart" people use. So yeah. Science is like cool. My friend works in information technology. Philosophy is for thinking about stuff. I really fail to see how people "backpedaling" or to put it another way "Reconsidering what they previously said and being sufficiently comfortable in themselves to change their minds without getting super defensive and butthurt" is such a bad thing.
In my experience smart people don't need to spend their lives beating their chests about how smart they are or MORE IMPORTANTLY don't endlessly blather on about how dumb everyone else is which is in essence all that I've seen the Gipper do since I started lurking here who knows how long ago. I don't know how many times I've seen you respond to people's perfectly reasonable opinions with "you're an idiot" simply because they are different to your own. What I mean by backpedalling isn't changing your mind, but is making a claim, such as "if anybody can find anything wrong with my songs I will focus my account," then when being called out on it, claiming that you never really meant that at all, or claiming that your original statement was misinterpreted and attempting to redefine what it means. Saying "good point, I'll reconsider" isn't the same.

props to you man, I work in finance now, and had the opportunity to get the CFA, but i hate this industry so much. I couldn't justify memorizing math and options pricing related to exchange systems made up by human beings, math that defies nature and logic and any other application. That's why i am going for a career change, the finance world just bums me out so hard, I couldn't spend so much time learning things to not actually produce anything, working with people who claim to know exactly how economics work, yet never improve or change the system that keeps hiccupping at the expense of the working people. I spent a lot of time researching behavioral economics and the work of smart people like richard thaler, nassim taleb, paul jorion, and and robert shiller, but there is just so much misinformation and purposefully confusing reports and analysis out there and the status quo and the common debates are just all built on faulty assumptions and the wrong ideas. Props for sticking with it.

You continue to "serve your duty" as a hip hop lover and ima continue to enjoy what I do as an artist. I got alot of local people that back me, so i could care less what the kool mike has to say over the internet.
If you're curious to know who my favorite rappers are its Jay-Z, Kanye, Jeezy, 50, Luda, Fabolous...Really I can go on & on. I listen to as many different artists as possible and i listen to alot more than just rap music, despite it being my favorite genre. also I don't know why you're so surprised to see me use a song with a broad appeal as a single. You think ima use songs like Growing Pains, All Alone, & Psychedelics (songs on my album) as my lead single? nah im leavin those kinda joints to be heard as part of full listening experience. The album plays out like a movie and just like any good movie you cant just put every key scene in the trailer. Expensive Taste is some wavy lounge music than anybody who enjoys indulging some of the finer things in life can relate to. So maybe that theme may not resonate with YOU, but theres certainly a ton of people that it does resonate with, and for those who can relate (on any level), its a good song.

I really fail to see how people "backpedaling" or to put it another way "Reconsidering what they previously said and being sufficiently comfortable in themselves to change their minds without getting super defensive and butthurt" is such a bad thing.
In my experience smart people don't need to spend their lives beating their chests about how smart they are or MORE IMPORTANTLY don't endlessly blather on about how dumb everyone else is which is in essence all that I've seen the Gipper do since I started lurking here who knows how long ago. The U.S. isn't kept afloat by China at all, if anything, its the opposite. China wouldn't have the giant industrial boom they have had if it weren't for the fact that American companies invest and send production of goods over there and American consumers buy what they produce. If you are referring to China buying American currency, that actually just shows that China is dependent on the American dollar maintaining its value.

Maybe it is just me, I swear there has been a spike in dumbness around here lately.
Is that what your psychoanalysis of everyone's posts lead you to believe?
I don't think psychoanalysis is really necessary. I was thinking more about the HUF shoe thread. But, you are also a welcome addition to the Carnival of Moroni. :-*
