I'm a huge fan of Neurosis, Isis, Russian Circles, Pelican and the likes.
I also play in a Sludge band called HMBSM. Short for Hemelbestormer, which means stormer of heavens in dutch.
We have a small recorddeal on a cool Belgian label.
Just released 1 song online.
Expect some heavy stuff with some Drones in the middle...
PORTAL TO THE UNIVERSE:
Recorded and mixed in Hasselt by Joris Timmermans.
Mastered in Italy by VVB.

For fans of Neurosis, Cult of luna, Isis, Syndrome...
Cd out in november on COUNSOULING SOUNDS RECORDS
(Alkerdeel, Amenra, Syndrome, Aderlating etc...)

So I had an idea for a band that would require two bass' and tuned slightly different one standard but the other lower. The standard would play the higher and solo parts whereas the lower would be heavy as fuck. As most things I plan with others or I try to do it usually ends in failure
here's a band I saw recently amazing live to see

I really like the idea of acoustic black metal/doom/sludge

I know I just posted them, but the Melvins toured with two bassists and it seems like they did something similar to this.

Dang it The Melvins definitely are on to something
I have been getting more into the obscure and borderline indy post black metal shite however it gets kinda corny if you listen to The Haunted it gets whiny and sing songy. I hate absolutely abhor that deathcore screamo b.s.

That’s sick. They’ve been pumping out lots of quality records over the last decade.... they seem to have been trying new sounds....
There’s this mini doc on NOLA sludge... recommend watching all of the episodes...

These are some friends of mine that are sorta defunct now but they do something like what you were talking about. 3 piece, 2 bass players and a drummer, everybody sings. Shit still sounds pretty heavy to me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-0ZMpSmPUA
The Haunted Made Me Do It and to a lesser extent One Kill Wonder are very good. The other stuff is pretty lame to me. I think it's just the fact that those two albums have a different singer than the person on the other albums.
EDIT: Derp I forgot the link

I have forgot to post my friends doom project. I have told him for years to get something going with the doom genre. This is what he did and its pretty sick. He does it all by himself and there some great samples from the movies Falling down, Zardoz etc and a great cover of Beethovens 7th symfony-

Not typically a very heavy group (aggressive, yeah), but the first half-hour of this performance is doom/sludge at Earth/early Boris levels of slow with a three-way screech fest between Zorn, Eye (Boredoms/Hanatarash) & Kevin Sharp (Brutal Truth) and some of the tightest drumming out there (courtesy of all-time favourite Joey Baron). Nasty stuff:

here's a lesser-known one that nobody's mentioned yet: toner low, from the netherlands. very riff and drone oriented, super simplistic riffs with excellent fat tone. touches on some of the qualities i like in records like melvins' lysol or the slower cuts from boris' amplifier worship. definitely not ground-breaking, but well-executed and fills a nice underpopulated niche imo

this thergothon record is so fucking sick. they were my portal into funeral doom. found it at a time right after my dad died and the mournful quality was really what i needed.
on the topic of "mournful," surely some folks in here are hip to mournful congregation? if not, check em out, some great melodic guitar leads. a cut above most funeral doom imo.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnAZqV1DqxY
skepticism is another standout from the OG funeral doom world but they can get a little too symphonic and dorky for me at times.
and since thergothon is from finland, has anyone mentioned killer finnish death/doom band rippikoulu?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjaV-3PLXh8
i think rippikoulu is where spectral voice got a lot of their original ideas from. interestingly enough i'm pretty sure a member of mournful congregation has done bass duties for spectral voice at some point or another. but yo, is everyone hip to their first ep/demo? SO MUCH better than the LP imo, just more focused and hard as nails. less clean guitar.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mJYOTn80Jw
the spectral voice LP had a little bit of a dISEMBOWELMENT vibe to me, but disembowelment have like a whole ton of material that is arguable better, so its not like the SV demo where it expands on the rippikoulu sound that we tragically never got more of after their initial release
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-gRJ-fHDjI
disembowelment are maybe more into the death side of doom so slightly outside the scope of this thread perhaps

i think dream unending has a guy who was in both mind eraser and the death metal band inumerable forms
im gonna go full nerd on this one and say i thought the dream unending LP was kinda weak, made me feel like "ok the bandwagon has moved along and now that spectral voice is big everyone wants to start a death/doom project"
maybe i'm being unfair or jaded, idk. the test for me will be to revisit that record in a year or two and see if i've changed my mind

A+ post. Mournful Congregation are awesome, and they just released a new EP that sounds just as good as anything they've done. They've never had a misstep.
Disembowelment and Rippikolu are the cream of the death/doom crop as far as I'm concerned. Spectral Voice (whom I love) definitely capture the atmosphere that Disembowelment has, which is something most death/doom bands kinda miss.
Not sure if you've listened to Inverloch? A couple of ex-Disembowelment members, one great LP.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SO-uO9_WKgo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SO-uO9_WKgo)
Agree with you about Skepticism. I like them but Thergothon definitely has a more pummeling sound. That's kinda where my line is for Funeral Doom... when it gets too orchestral with choral vocals and string sections. When it gets described as "beautiful" I kinda tune out.
Another great death/doom album:

Most people that like Spectral Voice (BI) fuck with Primitive Man so maybe someone here will enjoy this. Doom/grind may be an oxymoron haha. It’s slightly annoying that black ceremony went from the most underground album to doom metal starter pack in a matter of a year.

nice find here, these guys nail the early khanate/burning witch style PNW tone really well. so satisfying, so heavy.
gear heads, what's the formula? i think a sunn model t and a rat pedal is kinda like the starting point, but i know there's more to it
-
@mj23 yeah that's a good start. back when I used to play in a doom kinda band I used to have a sunn concert lead and then my rat volume adjusted louder than my actual head and that nasty eyehategod dopesick feedback would ensue when I would click that puppy on lol.
I also used a few other overdrive/distortion pedals that I can't recall rn. I am by no means a gear head, the other guitarist in the band pushed me to get everything I eventually had hah

Not sure if this Waste of Space Orchestra album has been talked about here, but it’s REALLY fucking good. It’s collaborative project between Finnish bands Oranssi Pazuzu and Dark Buddha Rising that spans a lot of different metal genres. Psych, drone, doom, black, etc… It even reminds me of the Phantomas album Directors Cut (which is also amazing)

This is proper Doom with a capital D. Heaven as fuck, downtuned, slow, loud, but doesn’t make you want to stick icepicks into your ears.
Scrolled through this entire thread to see if someone had posted this as it is easily one of the greatest heavy albums recorded in the past 30 years. Haven't followed "the scene" in a long time but still love a lot of bands/albums from the mid-90's to the late aughts (won't bore you all with a list). Didn't see this posted, always liked how bleak it sounded.

Saw Candlemass last week. Sooooo damn great. I have seen them before a few years back but I think it was with a different vocalist and this time they were touring with the original dude who did vocals on epicus doomicus.
Excellent set list comprised of stuff off nightfall, epicus, and a few off their newest album
Made me really appreciate them even more
