Title: Why did rasa libre disappear?
Post by: Endless Toedrag on January 06, 2014, 11:54:15 AM
You know, the poor mans organika?  The pony wearing, peacepipin', poster boy of the grateful dead/soul skate  matt fields co?  Good board graphics, cool aesthetic, good dudes: was I the only person who agrees with that?  Matt field: come back!

Who still has the 'magical scarf' that came with the decks when it was still under deluxe?  Imagine a little skate kid riding around with a aqua colored scarf w/silver stars on it trying crush spots.  And no, that shit didn't make you skate better!

Not cool bro, but fun times anyways.

The boards came with this scarf or a logo medallion on a leather cord. For all the love Rasa Libre seems to get now, I never saw another person skating their boards.

When they were with DLX that is when they had an identity. It was when Ipath was at it's best, and Matt Field and Nate Jones definitely gave the company an image. When Rasa Libre made a comeback Ipath was dead, and being a "hippie" skater was lame again (probably always was).

I love rasa libre more than a few of my immediate family members. It was the first company that I saw that just clicked instantly like wow that's the raddest fucking thing ever. I liked other companies before then, but rasa was just that shit for me. I even loved the rebirth of rasa, bryan botelho kills it and I'm stoked he's on the northern co.

That being said, if anyone has a magic scarf, a logo pendant, t shirts or decks. PM me because I get everything that I can

I literally have a stack of 11 or 12 skated rasa boards in my closet at my parents' house in Ohio, I think I helped keep that rebirth alive for at least a year.

That's sick!! I'm the same way about The High 5. I get any sort of sticker, shirt or board I can find. I still buy a bunch of Send Help stuff because it's obviously the same thing but The High 5 just had a better ring to it.

Backing this.

I felt the same way.

DLX Rasa was honestly the last "new" company I really cared about. I loved everything about it, and even remember those first early ads, no skating just weird hippy shit, like Nate Jones' thumb with the US flag on it, or something like that. Remember the mini amp they did? All their boards were sick, and were all I skated for the duration the DLX version was around for. After that it just never felt the same. But the OG look and team were amazing.

Plus they toured London early on and Michael Leon (who's a genius for what the identity he came up with) had a sick little show in the basement of Cide.

I wish I kept more than a handful of t-shirts that are now way too small for me.

Jenkem: Where did the money go Matt?

Matt:  Look, after my sun salutations, a bird landed on my shoulder, told me a grateful dead cover band was playing in sedona, so i hitchhiked into town, and guess what? no cover band, what could this have all meant.  i found an old tab of lsd in my pocket, ate it, and realized money, skating, and the slap forum were all meaningless.  i climbed to the highest peak, set fire to all remaining magic scarfs and have been in meditation ever since.

Jenkem: so you went broke paying for hot yoga instruction?

Matt: basically.

Rasa Libre went under because they got sued by an auto detailing shop across the street from their offices. their logo was a rip off of the shops' logo so they got sued and never recovered.

Last time i saw matt field, he was giving lessons to kids at proof lab in mill valley for like 40 bucks an hour. bummed me out. hope he gets sponsored by lululemon soon

it seemed like the brand was getting pretty popular right before deluxe dropped them...but imo the team/vibe during essence of freedom era was the best.

met matt a few times after that video had came out each time it was like this

me: rasa is fantastic, thank you matt for doing what you do

matt: it would really mean so much to me if you bought a board..they're in FTC ..

that happened three times. pretty funny, i never knew if i should take it as a 'thanks for the compliment now put your money where your mouth is' or a 'i'm narcissistic and financially unstable, and you look like a sucker'. probably both.

Gotta say at 2nd look, not feeling the script either, at all tbh, really out of place looking imo. Still would be cool without out the rasta coloured "Barry Walsh" though. 65 so like 100 in Canada? thats kinda lame. Put the same graphics on some well made shop decks, with sanskrit lettering or something like that instead and i'd be down though

The art is sick but the logo placement more has to do with how graphic design is so different than plain art. It looks like some "art dude" did this more so than a designer. Still....not totally bad.

Thanks Morty. I'd be down to support and I checked out the Creation site but decks are $59 + whatever they charge for shipping. That's a little too salty for me with how I fast go through decks.

You can get 20% of your order if you sign-up to the newsletter on their site. I have the Kenny Reed Visionary deck, looks better in reality then on the picutre.

Rasa Libre was sick, hope Field will get a new board sponsor.

I still think Nilton Neves was sick. Wish there was more footage of him. I always loved this:

I use to buy Rasa Libre boards off Luke Croker for a while.

Can we get a list of riders who use to ride for Rasa Libre?

Matt Field, Mike Daher, Kenny Reed, Nate Jones, Ben Gore, Ryan Lay, Jon Newport, Dylan Rieder, Kenny Reed, Nilton Neeves, Jack Saaback, Luke Croker, Omar Salazar.
i dont think luke rode for them.

joel meinholz, brian bothelo, max van arnem, reese forbes, jesse narvaez, and nathan porter. that evan kinori or whatever guy in those magenta montages was flowed i think by both rasa incarnations.
