So every time I plug my iphone 5 into my laptop (mac OS X) I get an error message saying something like "a USB device was drawing too much power, it has been disabled" and it wont charge, it still wont charge when i use the adapter and plug it into the wall. Is it an issue with the cord or what?

I had the same problem, it is most likely a build up of lint in the socket. I used a toothpick to clear it out, be carefully not to fuck up the pins though. However, it could be the cable they are pretty prone to breaking.

Same exact problem and did the same thing. Worked well.
