I got goosebumpy when they were talking about the transition of freestyle into what would define street skating in the future because I remember that shift so well.

not trying to be a jerk but his mom kinda reminds me of some of his drawings. she's got the same mouth as the guy eating the whole cow [old graphic, possibly tv]. he really is a white trash raw jock and i'm sorry i doubted him.

Okay, that was amazing, i feel this could easily be like a 7 parter. Dill shows why he's always an interesting interview. As long as i waited for this i'm glad it took awhile because there are so many key guys to track down for interviews on this.

im really stoked for this one. it will for sure be a great series.

ed has been one of my favorites since ive started skating and has always been an inspiration of mine. i got to meet him at wild in the streets in 2012. he was a really nice guy, down to talk to everyone and answer questions. i remember him drawing on kids arms and taking lots of photos, just having a good time and handling the mob of kids really well.

i was so stoked to get this photo with him.

I have never seen pay n' play mentioned anywhere before. That place should get way more mentions or at least its own episode.

Those sessions must've been epic.

One thing I don't get is why they threw in that clip of dill talking about gonz in between that segment. Didn't seem like that happened at pay n' play.

This has to be a ten parter or something. He was literally there for everything.

this might turn out to be the best EL yet. such defining moments.

I perfectly remember looking at that sequence of Jason Lee doing a 360 flip in Transworld, and not understanding it at all.......
I also remember when I saw the local ripper do one in person, maybe a year later, with those huge 80's boards. And I still didn't get it ha!

Gotta say I sympathize with Templeton too cause I broke my fibula pretty much at the same time as him.
anyways, really looking forward to the other episodes!

I just want to emphasize that this really needs to be a particularly long episode. Eds story is our history and a lot of it is yet to be recorded.
I hope Odell or vice (or a particularly bored slapper) lines up all the sub-parts in some semblance of a chronological order, starting with part one dresden (who I think is the earliest)all the up to the present in a giant 4 hour mega video.
It would be the greatest skate doc of all time.

I was really hoping for some J. Lee commentary and still am but somehow I doubt we're gonna get it. Would be rad though. I watched an interview w/one of them a few years back. I can't remember if it was Ed or Jason but they said they were each other's nemisis so I didn't realize they were actually good friends. I thought they were more like rivals. Does anyone know if they're still close? If not it'd be interesting to hear what happened...

Ed seems fairly humble, if it wasn't in fact the first photo documented 5050 on a rail, he wouldn't make that claim.
Natas,Gonz both grinded rails about that same time frame (probably sooner)but I think circle a got the ad out before visions video came out.  Maybe not. I did google both and scrolled through dozens of pages and no prominent 5050 rail photos popped up.

you read his comment wrong. but anyways i was just on instagram and odell had posted an ad of danny sargent doing a 50/50 on a rail and in the comments you find out his ad came out in the march 1988 issue of thrasher and templetons came out in the june 1988 issue of transworld so sargent had the first one in print. damn i feel nerdy after this post.

I'm really hoping this will be on the level of the Cardiel episode (80+ minutes long, dvd release) and if it came out on dvd I'd definitely purchase it. It would be even sicker if it came with a little photobook or something but that's far fetched wishful thinking. It's been said before but this is shaping up to be legendary and I don't think they'll disappoint.

Hopefully he tells the story about meeting Deanna in the next one too, talk about a skateboarding power couple.

so they made other DVD's after that?

I'm near positive that it came out around 2011 but I could be wrong. It may have been around the time it became a four part show on vice instead of the original one with 8-10 parts. I'll look it up right now though.

edit: The DVD was only given away at skateshops that carried his shoe back in 2008, sorry for the confusion. Just checked ebay and there isnt one for sale at the moment. There was an article that mentioned it on the vans website but for some reason I'm having trouble pasting the link.

Isn't there a funny story behind it though? I saw an interview somewhere, maybe in Beautiful Losers, where they told some story about meeting in which Deanna was wearing some genie pants or something and she bought Ed a soda that his friend subsequently stole and chugged. It just stood out to me as a random, funny story that I hope they bring up.

pretty epic....

i remember wearing out the new deal promo, useless wooden toys, and 1281 vhs tapes. it was kool to hear about the hb history and it was unkool to hear about what happen to paul schmitt (one of my first real pro boards was a Lucero). funny shit is that i remember living that era in the pico union area of los angeles so we were always a little behind the times since we would get hand-me-down mags and we would be hitting up kenter elementary(wheels on fire), venice high(streets on fire), and wilshire blvd (public domain). can't wait for more episodes, big ups to patrick o'dell.

In Beautiful Losers, Deanna just explains it as she bought Ed a water and one of his teammates grabbed it out of his hand and drank the whole thing, and she thought he was cute so they went on a date. I hope she was wearing genie pants, that would make the story cooler

I think he just said it was the 1st *ad* with a 5050. I'm pretty sure the first actual photo was the one of Natas grinding the federal rail with copers  - that's definitely the first one I remember seeing. I'm not positive of the chronology there tho...
I'm pretty sure he specified ad, not photo. This also came out in '89, though I originally thought earlier:
Gonzo Goes to New York (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ppj1VNhRAI#)
Who knows which came out first...

Isn't that song about abortion?
[/quote]

i wouldn't say this song is about abortion, per se, more then it is about abandonment, loss of innocence, and loss of childhood. the song says the baby is born, "immerse the baby's head / wrap her up in the news of the world" and that the baby is given up, "dump her on a doorstep, girl." i thought the song was fitting since ed says he lost his childhood to a 20-something-year-old girl when he was 16. anyhow, that's just my take.

Well because I couldn't find the new Templeton episode I accidentally discovered Chris Nieratko's 4 episode Skinema with Belladonna.  There were so many scenes with her fully naked and him just completely awkward.  He even throws her a towel to clean herself off after a scene and she asks, "What, you aren't going to wipe me off?", and the ensuing 2 second clip was too good.  I figured this was on topic for a Templeton thread.

ed should've done the damn boardslide w/ a boner, we'd still be talking about that cover today. mike v stole jason lee's girl, bully. no offense to mike v but if that were my lady i'd be tearin that ass up! i love what a wholesome guy ed is, photos of skaters peeing notwithstanding. it's funny how he says dressen's skating was rudimentary but doesn't mention vallely's regressive tricks.

I hope this goes like 6-7 episodes. This one seems on part with the other great ones. I am learning so much about Ed that I didn't even know. Even if they end it on his whole leg getting messed up, it just seems poetic in what kind of career he had. Good job Patrick! We needed this since even Weekend Buzz is gone for now.

mike v fell off the veggie train a while ago but i see him as a sort of henry rollins and that guy hates morrissey. he [rollins] made claims he wanted to tie morrissey up and force him to learn all the lines from caddyshack amongst other things [prolly putting some meat in his mouth].

a.j.k.,

maybe you're right and i got it twisted. i wasn't that young when i read the article but for some reason i remember walking away thinking that he was homophobic. i'm sure he is probably hugging and high-fiving homosexuals with no prob. i guess his persona left me this impression since i've seen him act all alpha male at my local skate spot when i was younger. when i saw his jockish, preaching, and opinionated personality i knew i wasn't a fan. but then again, maybe his new black flag album will turn me into a fan, lol. or maybe not.

on another note, i had heard stories of ed and deanna templeton way back in the day. and next thing you know ed is photographing deanna's mouth on geoff pecker

So, I was looking through the 15th anniversary issue of thrasher that I have, and I found pretty good sources on the who 5050'd the first handrail:
Gonz interview, page 88:
"Were you the first to 5050 a handrail?
Yeah, I did one at that Savannah contest. Oh yeah, and New York at that Eighth street handrail, it was such a good handrail.  It was a perfect height. It was perfect and it was square. That was a good one. I bet somebody could probably do like, a 180 kickflip to nosegrind down that handrail"

Natas interview, page 81:
"then from railslides [on handrails] you started trying to grind?
"Well, Mark was the first one that grinded- this one in New York. He called me up, "I did a 50/50." Then I ended up in New York, and we went to the same one. It was real low, and he was trying to go up it. And I'm like "What?" he didn't really even get on it"

For the record, these were interviews from '96 and they were talking about the mid '80's.
So, yeah, hopefully this confirms that:
-Gonz is pure beast, and a god amongst men (trying to go up handrails at a time when he was the only person who could grind down them)
-And first 5050 down a rail goes to Gonz.

Where did I see the footage of him grinding that rail??

Jason Lee sounds like he was a jerk. I use to have a room mate whose sister dated Jason, my room mate hated him said he was abusive to his sister and a real asshole to everyone. I always chalked it up to a younger brother being  made at his sister's boyfriend, but after hearing Ed talk about Jason, I think he was right!

I certainly hope that the inference of joblessness wasn't being directed at myself - you see, I've actually created two businesses and hire a handful of people who make a living wage well above industry standard, so I am afforded the luxury of sleeping until noon if I work until 5 AM to keep things running.  If it was directed at someone else like Shark Tits, how do you know he doesn't have a similar situation, or, that he might have an employer who doesn't give two shits if you type some gibberish on a skateboarding message board during break time?  Or, that perhaps he's pounding the pavement seeking gainful employment but posts shit here that pisses you off during his downtime?  You know what they say about assumption, Gip!

But, regardless of what Shark Tits thinks (I wouldn't know, I can't read his mind nor do I feel the need to play "Thought Police" every time I feel someone disagrees with my personal ethics), I just have 4 words - who gives a shit?  I haven't seen him encouraging people to burn a cross on someone's lawn, I haven't seen him write an empassioned dissertation on the perceived need to re-implement Jim Crow, so regardless if the dude writes some shit that those with thin skins can't handle, it's his opinion and he has every right to say his shit regardless of how it offends your PC sensibilities.  People don't HAVE to all think the same, nor do they have to like each other - that's what makes life so fucking great, because it really doesn't mean shit if we don't agree, you have your opinions and I have mine, and no matter how much you'd like to frame it in a good-vs-evil manner, it's just your fucking opinion and nothing more regardless of how much you'd like to encourage everyone to jump on your bandwagon.

Honestly, how do you even leave the house when you're filled with so much outrage every time someone says anything that's not in line with your ideas on how everyone should live?  I'd swear that you should have had at least a dozen heart attacks by now from how outraged you get over everything - try for once to not seek every reason to get pissed and scream "RAAAAYCISSSST!" every time someone doesn't automatically self-depricate for not being of color or dares to make a joke that you don't find funny.  Trust me, you'll feel better that way.

I do wonder how he would handle this. I'm sure it happened like that but if they interviewed him would he state that it did happen like that and he regrets it or would he be super pissed and deny it? Pat always seems really thorough so I'm sure he at least asked Mike to interview, weather or not he accepted I guess we'll find out in the next few episodes.

mike v might prolly dodge the bullet like kareem did. don't see how he could rationalize it. i had a roommate like him one time, he did rocket flips [we call them 'brandon flips' outta disrespect] and slappy noseslides going 100 mph but couldn't really do much else. i had quit my job and moved outta my squat on savings, he conveniently lost his job. i covered rent. he went to workaday a little and brought on another roommate. then he spent his workaday money on tequila and started a fight. new roommate kicked his ass so he returns w/ a shillelagh and breaks it over his head. the fight spills outside where the cops and landlord show up.
new roommate moves out, brandon smashes his tv w/ a hammer, glasses showers everywhere. i moved out and brandon moved a girl in. dude never returned my spitfire coach's jacket so i tagged the door 'sharktits, here for my coat'. then i remembered that i could go up a tree into his 3rd floor bedroom window. broke in and stole a carton of stoges, zippo and pissed on a pile of clothing.
tried denying it later but i had forgotten i autographed the door. shtooops.
fuck brandon and mike v.

See, this is why I vibe the fuck out of this pile of garbage. He's a racist pile of shit, then he backpeddles and makes claims for why he isn't a racist all while spreading racist propaganda. Fuck him, I"m going to ruin any thread he starts. If you want to avoid it, don't post in his threads, and if it seems like something worth discussing, make another thread with the same topic. Again, don't really care if it makes me hated, if it ruins him on here.

D. Bag, it sounds like you are the classic capitalist leach. You rely on the labor of others to make your money. Good for you. It hasn't made you very intelligent. I also find that successful entrepreneurs always have a few irons in the fire, making it so that "free time" is scarce.
I talk shit on the racists that come on here because this board should be open and welcoming to all of the diverse posters who want to post on here. When racists or racism become unchecked, than douchebags like you are all that is left.

I'm not going to quote you, because you fucked it all up like an idiot, but that was my point, you idiot. I wasn't contradicting that at all, I was referring to our earlier conversation on this thread (which actually does contradict it. Danny Sargent was the first 5050 photo in an ad. Ed was #2)

For a teacher, you really do come off as a cock.

You know what they say, "Those who can, can.?  Those who can't, teach."

Couldn't resist putting that out there to rile up the Gip.

actually, it goes, "those who can, DO, and those who can't, teach."

That's what I get for posting within 15 minutes of waking up.

and those who can't teach are waking up to a busy day of posting on slap in the middle of the work week instead of looking for a job.
And sure, I'm being a dick to shark tits, but that's just because he repeatedly posts racist threads. I'm ok with you thinking I'm a dick if it gives me a chance to show how worthless he is.

wow, that hurt my feelings so bad. i'm the interesting person the teacher brings in to talk to the class [true story]. aren't jews sposedta be funny? you're one of the dryest, repetitive posters on here. i had a Jewish girlfriend for a little bit, she was no sarah silverman but she could make me laugh. were you adopted? are your parents bummed on your lack of humor? caught a light sneeze, caught a light breeze but weather permitting we'll be installing a polejam and re-cementing this rock cum bank over the wkend. don't tell me, i've nothin to do.

Victim/oppressor, victim/oppressor, blah, blah, blah, blah.....

You could well be the most unlikeable and fucking moronic judgmental cunt I've encountered in a long time.  Good work, because it takes a LOT of practice to play your role so well.

Capitalist leech because I work 10-12 hours/day 2nd/3rd shift, eh?  I forgot, if it isn't what the Gip does/thinks is correct, it's wrong and therefore needs to be lambasted with every Alinsky-esque rant known to man.

You could never run your own business, I can smell laziness and excuse making and jealousy a mile away, you're far from the first assumptive fuck I've dealt with.  Let's just say my latest employee hire was done to save a 50ish woman from being homeless in two months because I'm paying her nearly twice what she has been able to find in years. She's great, and now she won't be living in her broken-down down car as she expected to by May.  Must be all that greed that makes me actually give a fuck about others and give chances to those who might not have other opportunities while you prefer goose-stepping indoctrination of the youth through a public position where firing you would be harder than catching a Sasquatch in the middle of LA.

Please, just shut the fuck up before you look worse.  You've done enough to look stupid, for fuck's sake, for a teacher, you see to never learn a goddamned thing.

First, I love Ed, he's awesome and I've been a fan since the day I first saw that Circle A ad way back when.  He probably influenced me more than anyone back in the original New Deal days, all the way through the 90s, except during that god awful pressure flip and turtle crawl kickflip to whatever on a 2" tall curb period.  Keeping it on topic for ya with that.

Second, even if I don't agree with Shark Tits on his thoughts, I don't care if he says them because it's his right to say whatever the hell he wants - or, did the rules change to where only if The Gip and Kamltoe deem it appropriate can it be said?  He isn't changing my mind regardless - are you that fucking mentally weak that if someone says something you deem racist, it will change your perception and brainwash you and you'll be lynching people by the end of the day?  Do you really go apeshit every time someone offends you as you just did here?  Fuck you cunty "I can't hear anything that hurts my sensitive feelings" jackholes.  Life ain't always pretty and you won't agree with everyone, I deal with/see/hear bullshit every fucking day that drives me nuts, but fuck if they don't have the right to say their shit just like your mouthfull of diarrhea has done here.  Quit trying to be the knight in shining armor for the internets, or at least SLAP, because it's fucking tedious.

Lastly, it was The Gip who inferred that I was some sort of lazy leech and I merely defended myself as necessary.  As for "sucking my own dick" unlike so many, I actually have done things to be proud about and don't feel ashamed to tell the facts.  It isn't like I was raving about my income, the car I drive, blah, blah, blah, but it seems you'd rather blow The Gip than anything else.  He's the king of assumption, and considering how often he's 100% wrong, you'd think he'd wisen up a bit and stop being such a cock about everything when he frequently gets his ass handed to him with logic and facts.  Work on backtracking the conversation a bit and smarten up, buddy, I was making a joke because I knew The Gip is such a fucking hothead with no impulse control that I simply wanted to test and see if he'd take the bait.  Which he did.  And then you appeared just in time to save the sanctity of SLAP and defend the honor of all that is good and virtuous.  Congratulations. You fucking win.

hahaha, so shark tits can say whatever he wants, and that's ok, but when I call you a leach (sic)) you lose your mind and post about how you are a totally awesome person and talk about how terrible I am? What you really meant to say is "If it doesn't offend me, its ok." Which is some classic capitalist pig shit. Also, hiring somebody at double your rate because they told you a sad story?

TL;DR because you obviously did not check his threads in whatever. go there, then re-read this whole thread. until then, you cannot address anything.

Even though there wasn't any skating, I thoroughly enjoyed this episode.

i was a little bummed at first when i realized it was going to be an all art episode, but how could they not touch on that subject.

when i was growing up and first getting into photography and design, obviously i looked for inspiration in skating more than anything else. i remember having to do these little reports in highschool about artists and ed was the first person i wrote about. i always thought it was cool that he wasn't just a skater, but a photograph and a painter and a designer and i loved that he did almost all of the artwork for toy machine. i still look at him as a big inspiration for everything hes done.

the teenage smokers thing reminded me of a weird discussion i got into a while ago. i was with my girlfriend and her brother in law and we got on the subject of kids smoking cigarettes. i mentioned the teenage smokers book and i had shown my girlfriend some of the photos before because i thought it was a really awesome collection. she thought it was cool too, so we start talking about it and explain the concept to her brother in law and he says something like "so he went around and took pictures of kids smoking? thats not art at all. thats like pedophilia. you would really want that book in your house? because if i went to someones house and they had a book filled with photos of teenage kids smoking, id think that they were fucked up." i really didnt have any argument to come back with besides "well, thats like your opinion, man." i can totally get where hes coming from, and maybe because he has two young kids that he might not find a collection of photos of kids smoking to be appealing, or just that hes a pretty conservative dude who really doesnt give a shit about art, but i had no idea what to say. it was super weird.

same. they'll probably cover it next episode but not thoroughly
feels weird without kevin barnett adding his 2 cents, he's such huge part of ed as well as toy machine
maybe his kickstarter thing to make ed's documentary not reaching its goal has something to do

overall, great episode. o'dell killed it with this series

I think it makes sense because then it puts why he didn't spend as much time on toy machine into perspective and the ensuing rebuilding phase. He's got this budding art career going so its not going to give him as much time to spend on toy in the early to mid 2000s. Suffer the joy and good & evil are still great videos tho. I loved those tour vids they made too.

I sort if wished Templton's Epicly Later'd spawned into sub-episodes of other riders on Toy like how Patrick did it when he did the Beauty and the Beast tour. Just like interview riders that got on or are still on and their experience with Toy Machine. Would be kind of cool to get some insight on Diego, Jay Lay, Austin Stephens and even Trapasso.

I was really looking forward to Ed talk about the rebuilding phase of Toy.  I got goosebumps when they left off last weeks episode kind of foreshadowing the rebuilding phase and Good & Evil because that is honestly my roots of skateboarding.  I really hope they go in depth of the lows of pre Good & Evil

Wish even Senn had something to say about Toy but I guess that is asking for too much.

I actually really liked how they added that new footage of the Vans skatepark opening at the end. Kind of cool to see Vans realizing Ed when he has nothing to do with their brand. Cool to see Tosh cameo too. Wish that dude skated again.

Reminded me they used to be teammates. BTW Emerica during this time might have been the best team ever(Reynolds, Ellington, Kirchart, Marc Johnson, Strubing, HSU, Greco, Templeton, Barley, etc etc pretty much all at their peaks.

first off hsu, barley, greco and strubing weren't all on at the same time I'm not sure if you meant to write it that way or didn't know.  and vans had to show respect to templeton and tosh they were skateboarders actually from HB that repped it hard. Not transplants who stayed for a while and dipped (some of the warner ave guys).  Im sure dill would have been honored if he didn't shit on HB so hard in every interview. Besides you can't build a skatepark there without honoring those dudes especially since ed put the old HB flatbar in the park

Ed is an amazing guy. It's hard being an older skater, at 42 I often think when is the big injury coming that takes me off my board for good. I always looked at Ed and thought, he is still out there ripping, I have no excuse....

And I still think it is lame how all those folks fucked Ed over by quitting, they wanted to stand with Bam over some stupid fucking video royalties, which Ed had nothing to do with it (Tum Yeto was in charge of that), where is Bam now? A fucking drug addict that doesn't even skate!! Good choice there guys!!

I was stoked to see that Toy Machine is making a 9" board, going to order one next paycheck, Ed deserves the support! A true skaters skater!!

While some of them quitting was dumb, certain ones made sense. Its hard to see a philly based guy like Kerry turning down the opportunity to get on the ground floor of what was an east coast brand with Habitat. I back Ed and am glad to see Toy Machine back with such a sick team. But I can understand why guys who were friends with Bam would quit because they felt Tod Swank was fucking him over. If I worked at a company and my boss was a great guy and loved to hang out with him, but I believed the guy above him was fucking me over on my pay check i would probably walk away too.

Agreed. Skateboarding could be in a worse state even with Street League and corporations. Look at even rollerblading and how that shit is non existent now when it was all over the place at it's peak. I know that is sort of what could happen to skateboarding but for the most part, it's not. Small brands still exist and it's almost a good thing that we have skaters like Dylan now a days. If everyone was so likable, I would almost think that would be boring.

Listening to Denna spill her guts about Ed was extremely touching.  :'(

And confronting the fact that'll I will be too old to skate someday is scary.

So much of my identity is built upon the fact that I skate. That in itself is fucked - because what it is to be a skateboarder, to me, is largely somewhat composed of 20 years of skateboarding marketing through videos and ads.

It's a strange world - no pun intended.

No taking away from Deanna's real talk, but any loving wife will say the same thing. My wife loves to see me post-skating, how I come home with a smile on my face, but always goes on about the dangers involved, even though I'm only skating curbs. She makes it sound like the end of the world if I ever sprained my ankle. I can see Deanna getting a bit more serious about her viewpoint considering all of the slams Ed has taken over the years, though.

So good on all levels.  My Pops used to skate and years ago when he was skating with me he dislocated his knee sideways super bad doing practically nothing.  He managed to recover and started mountain biking heavy and eventually got a BMX and learned 180s, 360s, barspins, and tons of other shit around the ages of 49-51.  It is the raddest thing to be able to rip the skatepark with my Dad and watch him progress at that age on the level of the local kids, and now he is doing dirt jumps.  My Mom has had to deal with him being injured from multiple things, and she hates it, and now even I have that fear of wondering if he will push it too far and hurt himself permanently.  It is a terrible catch 22, because we would never want to take away this thing he loves so much.  Heavy shit.

There is a huge difference between stealing someones check and lying to them sending them on a wild goose chase until you have no choice but to confess that you robbed them of their pay vs having a budget cut and having to pick A rider to let go.
Maybe the industry presented A similar situation but how Ed and Mike handled it are night and day.

^Yeah.

I guess dudes try not to think about it, but I know I'm gonna be hurtin' as an old man, I couldn't imagine if I spent a decade-plus jumping down big shit how it would feel.  Of course wives are gonna worry, but it's a more salient concern for guys skating 13+ stair rails.  The Retirement Home for Pro Skaters is gonna be a grim, pain-filled place.

BUT LOOK I WAS IN A MAGAZINE!  It's hard to fault guys for cash-grabbing when you think about it that way.

I wonder what Deanna meant by not recognizing Ed after an injury?  I know when I've broken my leg I was on hydromorphone like a motherfucker, maybe she's referring to him being in a pained, dopey haze?

This was maybe the best EL yet, and it made me think about my mortality, and now I'm sad thanks Patrick.

This was maybe the best EL yet, and it made me think about my mortality, and now I'm sad thanks Patrick.
i think he had temporary amnesia and didn't recognize her immediately. like early onset alzheimer's disease. must've been awful for deanna.

This place is funny, basically Ed did to Senn what Vallelly did to him.

Without threatening to beat him up..

[close]

There is a big difference between those two things you just made up yes but less of a big difference between keeping someone's cheque for a bit and kicking someone off a team because you owe them a lot of money.

He didn't kick Senn off because he owed him money, he kicked Senn off because he wasn't going to be able to pay him going forward.  Also, Mike didn't just keep Ed's check for a bit, he never gave it to him.

I was surprised how little Todd Swank was in it....I think that Senn thing was just a bad situation....it sucks but you can see....Ed felt he lost a friend and Senn felt hosed out of money.....Ed takes it to heart that Senn would have rode for free.....yeah right.....Senn rode for Element....

So much respect for Ed....comparatively you look at Caroll and Rick....they always had their bros backing them....Ed never had anyone other than his wife.....

It's a reasonable question to ask after the age of 30.....'how are you going out?  Sunset? Curtains?'.

Definitely my favorite EL. That Senn stuff was rough. When Templeton said that Senn told him "I would have rode for you for free", I got a lump in my throat too.

I really enjoyed Deanna's thing at the end. It was a nice, honest response.

Pat did an awesome job on this one. Seriously can't wait to see what's lined up.

-true! regardless, it's so f'd up to hear and see the business-skate-side-politics from skaters you respect. when you think about it, girl skateboards was founded by young guys who thought (wrongfully) that rocco was not paying them their worth (that he owed them money), jcassanova, unfortunately, was created under a similar circumstance. the skateworld could get murky when it comes to money (regardless if it's skater owned brand or not). with the exception of the skatepark of tampa dudes, skaters are typically not good accountants. so if senn says that ed owed him money, this might be true, or it could be a distorted understanding of what was going on. senn did say he was heshing out during that period as well. anyhow, this epically later'd was epically templetits.

deanna templeton's words made me reflective about the dilemma -- old age. when i skateboarded at my prime (teen years), being 24 was old... way old. i remember asking mark gonzales how old he was and he told me "25." i was shocked because i thought he was 35 and i let him know. he was soooo bummed, but hey, it was the 90s and skateboarding wasn't as popular just yet so skating into your 30s didn't seem likely. it's cool to see it continue to happen for some but older pros do have decisions that need to be made soon.

-thanks o'dell for restoring my faith in epiclly later'd. on another note, when geoff licked ed's cut to show him brotherly love, that was some detailed-personality-shit (also the  picture of deanna licking geoff's shorts)......... now, where the f was that when you did geoff's epiclly later'd?

-just saying

Did anyone really give a fuck about Chris Senn? i know his boards didn't sell, and his video part in that one Toy Machine video got treated like the vert part. They seemed to have skipped over the whole thing bout Bam, Kerry, and Maldanado all quitting Toy because Tod Swank is a dickhead. I also so remember hearing that the reason Senn got kicked off a long time ago was that part of his deal was that Toy had to match his contest winnings, and thats when he won every park contest and it was costing them tons of money to keep him around yet he really didn't make very much for the company, maybe thats what he was talking about when he said Ed owed him money.

i guess it's settled. from the danny sargent chromeball:

Have to bring up that Ain't Dead Yet handrail 50-50, was that the first one ever published? I've always heard it was either that one or Ed's 50-50 for Circle-A? That's a good question. I think Ed's actually came out the same month as mine but his was in Transworld on a square rail and mine was in Thrasher on a round one. I thought about that today when I saw Ed's Epicly Later'd and someone said he had the first pic grinding a rail in a mag. I've always been told that I had the first pic but he can have it if he wants. Or not. I know Gonz and Natas did 'em first.

(Editor's note: Sarge was in the March '88 issue of Thrasher, Ed's was in the June '88 issue of the still bi-monthly Transworld)

Danny Sargent is hilariously modest.

Chris Senn's part in Jump off a Building was AMAZING. I used to hate Kerry Getz because Senn's part kind of abruptly transitions to Kerry Getz, and when I saw him, I knew Senn was done Shredding. Didn't he also win SOTY the year that part came out? To claim he was never that rad is crazy. I can't say anything about board sales, but he was a shredder.

Yeah, cause the ones about young guys with no stories to tell are so interesting!

I always had the idea that Toy Machine was a shitty company to ride for. Like, barely anyone had their own model - everybody was riding some 10 year old graphic and was more or less a replaceable employee in service of Ed's vision. That may or may not be wrong.

But I did like the Ed episodes a lot. He seems like a truly decent guy. I'd probably buy a Toy Machine board again if the wood wasn't so shitty.

I remember being at a few contests in the mid 90's where both the crowd and other pro's were pretty blatantly dissing Senn.
I guess for trying too hard when that wasn't cool, spending his whole run in a street contest trying 540's on the biggest quarter pipe there and being a contest pro when everyone else was trying to be street as fuck one way or another..

Obviously with the benefit of hindsight his approach was way ahead of its time.

I once questioned Senn's naming of his son Anakin (in my head, not in person, and I got over it after 30 seconds).  Why not go all in and just call him Boba Fett?

Senn was SOTY for a reason, and does not get the vert button.

He won in 95 and i think Jump off a Building was like 98/99.  But that video did help Brian Anderson get SOTY that year. Pretty wack ed had to kick off Senn to try to keep Kerry then have him ditch for Habitat, but i don't think any east coast based guy was gonna turn down an opportunity to ride for a Sect based company then, Kerry fit Habitat better than Toy in my mind.

I thought it was a skatepark opening, and the 3 of them are all Huntington Beach dudes, so I assume it has to do with that.
