I can't ollie on flat for shit. I've done better ollies down gaps that I've tried scared and yet I can't ollie on flat for shit. It gives me insecurity when I try to ollie over or across stuff.
-
... what ? Flat ground ollies are so easy I don't even consider them a trick and I'm horrible on a skateboard...
-
dear thugwaffle. you're prolly going too slow because you can. when a gap presents itself you step to the plate like mark mcgwire but w/out stimuli it's harder to do your biggest ollie. let's say you can go over a trash can. it's way harder to go over an imaginary trash can. or to ollie a good distance w/ no markers that you're trying to clear.
my friend always wants to skate this court w/ perfect flat and we end up doing nollie big flips, all the 180 flips going wicked slow then we come to a street and had a hard time w/ kickflips. we'd spoiled the rod and screwed the child!
just go over stuff, manholes, crosswalks, cracks, whatever.

your mind is a powerful thing. not sure if this is what you're referring to but i've always found i can ollie higher with a proper leveling out only over an actual obstacle ie. tipped garbage cans, plastic jersey barriers, etc.
-
Same thing here. I can only Ollie when I need to.
Doing an Ollie on flat without "purpose" just doesn't work.
When a small gap, curb etc. appears, the ollie just works fine.
Someone should write an article about this phenomenon.
What about Jenkem!?

indeed man, this place is full of fat motherfuckers who cant even skate

First off, your right it is harder to bust a fat ollie on flat (I am picturing a still ollie). The momentum of thrusting over something is what gives ollies some flavor and style. What comes to mind is Quim Cardona's switch ollies. Just no matter where you are at, ollie random objects until you learn how to scrap that back foot, then you will grow wings and fly to heaven or some shit. seriously, drop what you are doing and get some, right now. Both my moms work at a strip club you don't see me sitting here do you?

Sounds like you need to build up your true comfort level on a board. The kind of comfort that only comes with time. It's a common problem with people who 1) never spent significant time skating from A to B or 2) moved on to other stuff like pop shuvits and kickflips before really mastering the basic ollie.
You can fix it by making up lost time. Find a 0.5-1 mile route that has some 2-3' flat gaps sidewalk planters are perfect) and ollie over every one, up every curb, and if there's things like curb cuts along the way then hit them, but keep it to ollies.
The idea is that you want to make it from A to B w/o missing a beat so don't try to get fancy. if it sounds like a hassle, try to remember you'll be skateboarding the whole time and cruising down the street ollieing over stuff is one if the most Zen aspects of skating.

agreed. There is this ledge at my local park that is fairly high. when I do a flat ground ollie, my ollie is way lower than the ledge even when I'm really trying hard. However when I try to grind the ledge or ollie up onto the ledge, I have no trouble getting up onto it. It's probably got something to do with your brain and that when theres no real obstacle your mind just doesn't give a shit.

I had honestly no idea that guys on slap were this bad
