I'm not sure if you realize how much the filming compliments the art and concept. Something like this might not even be possible without very aggressive, exciting filming. I think a lot of the effects and hidden surprises would be lost if the filming was less dramatic.

Yeah I don't get the critique. There definitely is some nausea filming out there, but although this is aggressive and close, it's controlled and thought out. Other than the kickflip that is!!!
I also realized that the bat-to-kickflip guy is Matt town from northern co. Siked cuz I love his skating

So this was insane.
Unparalleled in terms of creativity, editing, filming, concept, and soundtrack.
Oh and the skating was unreal too, duh.
Straight up skateboard video masterpiece, like a totally different league of its own.
Best surprise for me was a part from Bobby Worrest. Sprawling lines.
It's very dense and is going to require repeated viewings for me to really take the whole thing in. Can't wait to score a hardcopy in October.
If you live anywhere near a place that is having a premier, go. I drove three hours and it was positively worth it for the intro alone.

Agreed with all of this. Well done Colin! You hit a great balance of having a strong concept and idea of what you wanted to do but not making it boring or worn out. Awesome filming, awesome footage from everybody involved, and just a really well done video.

I know they were bummed cuz there was no glass allowed in the theater, and people kept kicking bottle rolling down the isles and stuff. They did give out plastic cups for purple to pour beers into but cmon there was free bottles of beer served, what else was gonna happen... They should have expected it.
I was sitting by a dude who kept refusing to move from out of the isle so I'm sure shit like that didn't help. And one dude kept like trying to fight people.
and the air conditioning felt fine to me, maybe the video made you have a panic attack haha

I just went to the Amsterdam premier and it was truly insane. Almost 90 minutes long, Bobby Worrest part and real cool filming and spots. The animations and transitions were amazing. Mind blown about every 5 seconds. Will be picking up the dvd asap.

I spoke to Colin about his back and it really is jacked. He said unless medical science takes a big leap this is probably the last skate video he can make, I sorta joked that he should wait for stem cell research to advance and then he told me the last treatment he had was along those lines and didn't do much for him. Such a bummer.

Got mine yesterday, watched it 3 times through with various people. Absolutely worth the wait. My few thoughts (Observation spoilers, no tricks mentioned):
-I wasn't expecting much from Taylor Nawrocki, his footage usually doesn't do much for me. Boy was I wrong with this one, he came through with mind melting switch tricks.
-Connor Kammerer was the most in tune and seemingly close to Colin, his part was my favorite. He fit his theme so well.
-Zach Lyons, King of the Small Banks.
-Chris Jones. Oh my. He skates seriously impossible spots.
-Vincent Touzery. Holy Crap he was shot out of a cannon. Skates fast, impeccable style and so precise with his skating. Finesse.
-This video merged how humans are interconnected to the elements, animals and architecture so seamlessly, bravo Mandible Claw. Most skate videos glorify the skaters (who all really came through) but "Spirit Quest" glorified Colin Read! Video of the year easily, and an instant classic. Just wow.

Got mine yesterday. Well worth the wait.
All the split screen slam/make shots are so great! The opening sequence is beyond words.
Some of those animal shots had me laughing so hard. Nawrocki's spinning gorilla, so good! They were perfect with the skaters movement. The wife actually came in to see what all the noise I was making was about. And even she could appreciate it.
I was not too familiar with Vincent Touzery before this. But I'm a fan now.
I want to see more of that Eby guy. His idea of a spot intrigues me.
After rewinding and watching in various speeds of slomo at least 20 times, I'm still trying to figure out exactly what Hiroki did on that double bar hippy Ollie. So crazy.
Great job Mandible Claw!
One more thing. If you wanted to be in this video, was it mandatory to do a duck down approach to a trick? Or did that just happen naturally?

I would imagine with the hype surrounding spirits quest you could push another 100+ hard copies of Tengu, for real. People that have never seen your videos before are going to want your older work as well.

Kind of both, which I love. Totally individual parts but the music is set up in a way that the tracks often bleed from one skater to another, so it feels fluid throughout. Best of both worlds in my opinion.
The Zach Lyons going into Marty Murawski and then Bobby Worrest is amazing. Actually, I could name every part and talk about how perfect it is. The intro is one of the best things ever. All of it is too good, I have been watching it over and over all weekend. Leaving it on as background as I do chores because the soundtrack if fucking amazing.

Truly amazing! Next level editing, you really outdid yourself. I need to see it for a third or forth time to really digest it. One of the tricks that stood out was the pop shuv to BS lipslide on the other side of the bench. Don't think I've ever seen that variation before but I'm sure as hell going to try it once I find the right spot. So does this mean we have to wait three more years for the next one or is this really the last hurrah?

What Budo said, it's full-ass parts but somehow feels like it's one cohesive thing. If that makes sense at all. and yeah the Marty section was such a surprise, and then the Worrest part blew me away. I think that's one of the best things about the video, I couldn't imagine another place where Bobby Worrest could share a video with Quim Cardona, or Vincent Touzery be in a video Danny Renaud. But somehow it all works and makes perfect sense. Like rvery part is unexpected when it shows up, but then afterward it made total sense. Ok enough, I'm gonna go watch the video for the twentieth time

if the cost is the only thing that you're worried about for a reissue, let me know! i have a dvd duplicator and could make anywhere from 1-100 copies of unprotected dvds for essentially nothing.

Upon third viewing I think Hiroki has my fav part. Quick feet at it's finest. More stand out tricks are the FS flip over three trash cans on flat and half cab flip to firecracker. Fakie flip one was sick too. It's one of those rare video's that gets better and music sounds better the more you watch it. Really digging the kids hip hop song with the didgeridoo.

Last night I had a lady-friend come over to my house for the first time and she was honestly interested in watching a skate video, so of course I picked Spirit Quest. She barely knows anything about skateboarding and we skipped around the chapters but she loved it, especially the precision of the editing on the animal clips and of course the trippy night section.
I mean sure, I was hoping to get physical with her, but sitting close on the couch seeing her be genuinely stoked on watching Spirit Quest was kind of cooler.

P.S. That girl also said how she loves the sounds that skateboards make, and I don't think she said that in relation to the dubbed-skateboard Connor part but now it is hitting me. I already knew I loved skateboard sounds, but it is cool being reminded of it from a non-skater.
Spirit Quest is such a good skate video it borders on being something else. Some artistic treat I can't explain.

Wow. Absolutely amazing video Colin. Already watched 10 or 15 times and notice countless new things with each viewing. The video is on some fine art fifth dimension level shit but also has great, raw skating that makes you wanna hit the streets. As someone who's made a handful of my own full length vids, looking at the precision of the editing and well thought out filming is so insane. Like I pictured myself making a project like this while watching and I was just thinking "holy fuck this whole video is actually fucked". I loved the music/mixed skate audio in Connor's part. So subtle and so perfect. His part along with Vincent, Chris Jones and Hiroki are my favorite. Dang Taylor too! The way everything flows so well in Tengu is one of its best features and you took it lightyears further with spirit quest. Thanks for your contributions to skateboarding, however draining it may have been over the years

Very true. 80 minutes is a hell of a lengthy skate video by any standards, but you'd be hard-pressed to try and trim any fat from SQ.
On the first watch, despite how much I was looking forward to it, I was worried that the filming/editing/animations would overshadow the skating at some point, but it's in perfect balance.

Unpopular opinion time!
I went a premiere at my local shop and thought the video was too long.
The editing transition stuff and multi-camera filming were neat, but the novelty factor wore off after awhile, at least to me.
Most of the skating was pretty similiar - low-impact cutty street skating.
Which is cool, but it all starts to blend together for me after awhile. A skate video that's one hour is generally pretty excessive, but two hours? Damn.
It was definitely a good video; the care, creativity, and hard work show.
But I think the video could have easily been 40 minutes instead of two hours. I just don't have the attention span to watch skateboarding for that long.

And I thought the skating was actually super diverse. Bobby Worrest and Chris Jones and Carlos young are similar?

I don't really know what all to get into because honestly, you've just got to see it. Parts from dudes I'm not into had a redeeming value to them. Parts from dudes I wasn't into, made me like those guys skating.
Connor Kammerer's part kind of had a similar effect on me as Dane Brady's part hit that guy that wrote the super long essay about being a child or whatever it was? So many great lines and legitimately amazing ideas put into action.
Chris Jones is my favorite skateboarder. First Vase, now this. Dude rips, creatively, with good style.
Colin man, you fucking nailed it. I hope you earn a spot editing for Nat Geo from this because goddamn 10/10.

Fucking fantastic. Footage from Carlos young, Brian DeLa, that Kyle Nicholson line he had for opening clip was fantastic, Ben Gore, Al Davis. Daniel Kim, Taylor Nawrocki. I could keep on going, footage was awesome. I have not been this hyped for a video in a longtime. Music and editing was so on point.
I have so many questions. How many VX's did he end up going through while filming, how many tapes, stupid shit like that, that makes me wonder after watching videos.

Haha, I wrote that piece on Dane's part and funnily enough just two days ago was thinking about writing something about Connor's part in Spirit Quest (well I think it's his part--the one where all of the skate sounds are utilized in the song).
I've been watching this a lot the past few days. So sick. There's just so much to take in, it's overwhelming in some ways. I am definitely the type to watch, and repeatedly rewatch a video dozens of times to take get a solid feel for it, but with Spirit Quest it seems so daunting to do that, haha. It's definitely going to take me a long time to absorb it all, but patience will be rewarding. One for the books, for sure.

Spirit Quest is the Moby Dick of skate videos.
It's almost too dense to consume it all in one viewing. The more I watch 2-4 segments at a time, the better they get.
In the current skate media climate, it's easy to miss a really great video when you straight-up marathon the entire thing.

I can't speak for Colin and I don't know for sure but what I do know is that Vincent's from Paris and is really still just a kid. It's not easy to just fly back and forth across the Atlantic to film for your homie's independent video. My guess is they finished his parts awhile ago and then Colin's been working on the rest of the video with that insane amount of people and this is how long it took for him to finish it.
On the subject of 917, I like everyone on the team but agree Vincent would be cool on something else. He did quit Polar for 917 though so it is what it is.

Just finished the video. I can't say enough good things about it. The skating, filming, editing and animations were all incredible, best skate video I've seen in at least a decade. Favorite part is a tie between Quim Cardona/Daniel Kim, Taylor Nawrocki or Chris Jones. Jones' half cab kickflip firecracker was absolutely insane. 10/10.

Rented it last night, definitely going to need a rewatch or two. Connor K and Daniel K both kill it, and was super hyped on the Bill Pierce footy. The sealife part was amazing too, and most all of the soundtrack. Only things I wasn't wild about was some of the screen-splitting sections were tough to follow, and some of the lesser skilled dudes' (Matt Town, etc) skating felt kind of like filler in such a long video.

for the split screen parts, if you've only watched it once then yeah you DEFINITELY need to watch it a few more times. it takes a while to understand what is happening in some of them, then it's like holy shiiiiiiiii
it's not a normal skate video so you can't really watch it like one

I got it for Christmas, I think it started off a tad slow but once it got going it was firing off pretty fuckin hard, there were so may bangers and the cinematography was amazing, there were at least ten tricks in there that could've easily been the ender. And it definitely didn't feel as long as it was, I'm gonna have to watch it again when I'm not as tired.

I can't stop watching this vid so good. I'm with the Vincent Touzery crowd here his part and the song were really dope. I've started watching it in reverse order watching part two: ascension first then watching part one after I like the pacing of that better and Vince gets the ender that way.

Colin, I finally saw the video....WOW! I was blown away just after the first 3 minutes! Good stuff man! I loved the ocean/water section, along with Daniel Kim. A couple things that really stuck to me was the kickflip nose manny and you flipped the VX same speed as the kickflip, along with the VX sliding down the slide haha. Good stuff man! Oh and some nice homie here sold me a copy of Tengu! Gonna watch that one soon too!

I mostly lurk here but I made an account just to echo most everyone else's praise for this project. Seriously one of the most creative and organic videos i've ever seen. Skating, music, edit - All on point. You can literally feel the care and attention to every detail. Well done, Colin.
