Way more core than Nakel doing an edit with Kendall Jenner for vogue and this whole clown ass board defending it.
-
If it was just the initial shot of the towers, it'd be an amazing graphic.

Dill giving hypebeast the new line preview.
All they did was re-post a couple instagram posts. Basically made a Ride Channel post.

so edgy brah ::)
-
It's kinda fucked up but it's pretty brilliant. As soon as Fox News gets the drop, FA stock is gonna skyrocket.
The only person who legitimized FA as anything remotely cool was Dylan. (still not used to referring him in the past tense)
-
I heard once you go upriver far enough you reach the top of the mountain and xenu is there.
-
"Quick quick take a picture of ME in front of the towers"

311 was an inside job
311 - Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYBIRHi5-o8#)
They'd been planning since 1990. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed financed their first albums.
Seriously though, to the guy who said FA should change their name to Gimmick (even though FA is a gimmick in itself) is pretty spot on. It's gonna piss a lot of people off and Dill's going to be jacking off at the thought of it. Also, it takes a whole lot to make me refer to something as "in poor taste" but the label definitely fits here. Fucking edgy.

it's a gimmick, in the way that putting neat pictures and words on the bottom of your skateboard so people will buy it is a gimmick.
it is not a gimmick, in that it's a genuine representation of this person's (Dill) esthetic and artistic sensibilities.
Sure it's kind of trashy, but we're not in wet willy territory here

Give me a fucking break. It's meant to inspire a response far different than seeing a graphic that you like. Dill is not an artist, despite what he thinks. It's a cheap use of a taboo meant to make himself look edgy, nothing more. But hey, if someone wants to spent $75 on a novelty deck, go for it.

Not to be combative, but I think using tragedy as an opportunity to make one's self look interesting and hip while simultaneously making money off said tragedy/personality marketing campaign is WAY more trashy than some sad cartoon graphic meant to appeal to seven year olds at Walmart.

they both could use a weed wacker. Dill (and his bush) did 9/11?

Jason dills has been whack since 23 skateboards ended.
I didn't even like his photo part, he was trying waaay to hard to be different then, and he's still trying way to hard to be different now.
gimmick, lack of substance and sub par skateboarding.
he was a good skateboarder.
try harder at skateboarding an stop trying to be an artist, you are cringe worthy Jason dill.

This graphic really bothered me. The way everyone is co-signing this is equally bumming me out.
The picture is heavy, no doubt. But to market it for sale is something else completely.
I understand the reasoning that if something moves you negatively then it's eliciting a response and that's better than being boring, or having no response etc etc; but that's often a fucking cop out.
I back their prerogative to do whatever they want artistically, but still think it's a shit move.

Only two Fa boards I own are the Dylan painting and the terminator board and those will never get skated. I wouldn't rep it In the streets but they do make for some cool art for the house. Might grab a have hate board for the wall too as I love the sticker. But beyond that I don't understand this company. I do enjoy how their boards don't feature any logos though. I could skate some of the less known graphics without feeling like I'm giving them too much love.
-
the guy must be so tired of seeing the same dull shit happen in the industry year after year, and not just with graphics..
drugs and sex aren't as shocking anymore so he did what he knew no one else would dare to do...not saying it was WORTH doing.
skateboarding deserves a better provocateur, but between him and anti-hero, there's not much happening in that department.
im just glad hockey's still heading in the right direction

How is this any different from an episode of South Park or something when they joke about horrible things within the year of them happening yet we all laugh and think its breaking taboos but everyone gets pissy over this and this isn't making a joke, its just two images.
-
This graphic is rad. It's no different than theories putting out twin towers stuff. He was there when it happened and at the time I'm sure he was just as shocked and victimized as anyone else who was in the city at the time. It's simply a before and after. Fools are tripping. Tons of people have made a ton more money off of that day than FA will on this graphic. Do you think the people that made the memorial there did it for free? Hell no!
2 cents.
-
im just glad hockey's still heading in the right direction

Guns, cigarettes and beer have all been on skateboard decks and they kill way more people than the 9/11 did. Am I supposed to be mad about that because my uncle's dying of lung cancer?

hundreds/thousands of people are dying at that moment the photo was taken. maybe a board with a photo of your uncle's last breaths would be a more accurate comparison
-

shakin my damn dick. the only way you could really pull this off is by donating all the proceeds to something to do with the tragedy/fire fighters. im not really offended, but its pretty wack to profit off that. i would respect him putting out this board. i could see him actually doing it.

That was the point I was making by saying "it's been long enough". Marty McFly getting his knickers in a twist acting like Dill had something to do with 9/11 or is disrespecting people's losses then Internet threatening to punch Dill plays into the marketing brilliantly. Sorry for you loss McFly but if this gets you so bothered I think you should seek counselling.

there is no controversy here. this is a case of a person showing the world just how self centered he can be. This is not a parody or even a political statement. it is just an asshole posing in front of people dying and now selling that image for profit. If you want to compare this to something?- How would you feel if it was 2 images, one of jay adams famous carve and one of dill posing in front of jays house with an ambulance out front and his family crying in the background. Now is it tasteless?

The comparison I was trying to make, was about marketing. Wet Willy seemed clearly to be the result of trying to sell boards to as many kids as possible, regardless of whether they skated. With this Dill graphic, of course he hopes it sells, but it seems in line with FA overall artistic direction, rather than being a market-researched grab at mainstream success. I just don't think any focus group would tell you that kids are wanting this in their stockings. Impeccable fuschnikens reference btw

true. But I don't think it is in this case. Some healthy, young, white hipster getting a profile pic in front of the burning towers is a powerful and evocative image, a sign of the times and pretty prophetic. It's like a .gif of Nero (another famous egomaniac) playing the fiddle while Rome burns. That would be some serious viral gold, it'd be autotuned and everything.
I sympathize for real with 911 survivors, friends and family
I sympathize with this girl too, trying to survive in an Afghani refugee camp with 3 more decades of destruction coming her way.
American Photo magazine says the image has an "unusual combination of grittiness and glamour" (Wikipedia).
I think they are referring to the way the shadows make it hard to tell if she has dirt on her face, and the paradox created by the rich texture of her torn clothing.

That makes sense. Thanks for not being offended at my response botefdunn. Definitely wasn't trying to come for you. Now I am though...to give you a HUGE CHRISTMAS HUG!!!

it is not a gimmick, in that it's a genuine representation of this person's (Dill) esthetic and artistic sensibilities.
Sure it's kind of trashy, but we're not in wet willy territory here

Fuck's wrong with knee high socks my dude?
Can't imagine skating in shorts and not wearing over-the-calf socks. Makes me feel invincible.
I completely take back the knee high socks thing, was a stupid (and i was quite drunk at the time) thing to say consider always wear over the calf socks since i wear an ankle brace.

That Dill / 9-11 meme had me rolling on the floor. Good one whoever came up with that!
Did the Natas 101 "Challenger" graphic cause any controversy? I remember when that came out and I was like, "Whoa!", but I still wanted it.

Post 101 Dill can get fucked. The audacity of this kook is off the charts. I couldn't believe he said Khaki was upriver/stream whatever when he's friends with Ozzy fucking Osbourne and modeling shoots with uncle pedophile Terry. The love he's getting for that horrid 9/11 board reflects how out of touch kids are with reality these days.
Fuck you Dill, I know you love yourself enough to scour these boards. At least I know you will see this.
Worldstar.

Is it any worse than the people who made movies reenacting the events for profit? Or the companies that make and profit off all the 'Never Forget' merchandise? Except they're legitimately preying on tragedy and marketing directly to people who are emotionally effected. Dill is just selling shock value to skateboarders and people that wish they skated.

No it's not worse. It's the same. When I saw those "Let's Roll" t-shirts days after I thought the profits better fucking be going to the families, though I doubt they did. They went into some non-skating Dillweed's pockets.

How is this any different from an episode of South Park or something when they joke about horrible things within the year of them happening yet we all laugh and think its breaking taboos but everyone gets pissy over this and this isn't making a joke, its just two images.
I'm not even American and still see 9/11 memes everywhere, it's prime bait for edgy humour. But this isn't a tasteless joke, it's just two separate pictures of the towers. The only argument against the board I have is that they're monetising off tragedy, but that's nothing new...
-
Jason dill is trying too hard to be unique. we get it, you are edgy and cool. you have force fed it to us since you photo part, I never bought it.

I'm not the biggest Dill fan, and I understand why people think he's a kook. But there's a difference. All interviews and footage are sought after, he's not putting that shit out himself. As far as the board, there's nothing offensive about it. That pic of him and the towers is 15 years old, I'm surprised it took him this long to put it on a board, I knew it was inevitable. All things aside, that day was fucked up. I was in the north east at that time and I thought the world was ending...
-
I don't think people find it offensive, they just see it as a kook who is trying to hard, like I immediately think of tom green sucking a cows utter on family guy when I see this shock value shit.
dill jumped the shark yeas ago. (the shark was the fire hydrant in that etnies ad)

This. The two boards aren't even comparable.
The Zero board goes along with the reaction of most of America had at the time (revenge). It wasn't a controversial image. It was probably just Thomas/Lopez hoping to express anger and patriotism in skateboard form.
As for Dill, I doubt he is making any sort of comment with a deeper meaning. I'd bet he is just creating an image that he knows will offend others. Its possible offensiveness is its only meaning. It reminds me of the motorcycle gangs in England in the late 1950's. The bikers wore Nazi stuff, not because they understood or cared about WWII, but by wearing that garbage, they were upsetting others. No politics, no ideology, no values, just a desire to offend, which made it "cool."
My guess is that Dill knows that this board will provoke a reaction and based on someone's reaction he (and his fans) can draw a line between those "who get it" and those "who don't get it."
Or maybe Dill is trying to say something. Maybe there is some real meaning in this that we can't see. Has anyone asked him, "What were you going for with this board?" No one has seen him smoking in front of Supreme lately?

What? No, I wasn't rolling around in 1950's England, but I'd be pretty stoked if there was a 70-ish year old British dude posting on SLAP.
Check out the old BBC documentary "What?s The Truth About Hell's Angels and Skinheads." The leader of the biker gang name's himself "Hitler" just to fuck with the older generation of Brits who obviously had pretty strong reactions to this.
Note: My first post mentioned the 1950's, I meant to say the 1960's.

Isn't it 70s England. I remember Strummer and the Clash were trying to keep punk from being coopted by the nazis the way they stole skinheads name and style from the two tone kids. (By remember I mean I watched This Is England)
Also, the Bin Ladin deck added to a whole series they had running with portraits of killers. I only remember Manson
-
It could be for shock value or nostalgia, just because I don't know him personally. For me, it's nostalgic, because him and a couple AWS/Habitat dudes were trying to skate ledges by the Trade Center, according to Tim O'Connor's commentary in Mosaic (I think), when it went down. At least, it's not a shirt.

9/11 happened at 8:45am on a Tuesday morning -- seems like a rather unlikely time for anyone to be skating in downtown Manhattan especially a notorious layabout like Dill.
