Title: Discogs
Post by: slappies on April 27, 2017, 08:18:56 AM
Any of you use Discogs at all? It's pretty nerdy but I just started getting into it. It's fun to sit and browse through records you'll never buy. I just started slowly uploading my collection today. I'm at work so I'm going off memory right now, but over time it'll all be up.

Post yours up, I always like snooping through other people's collections.

i have one of those 2x4 cube shelves from ikea thats almost completely full, so i estimate it would take me months to log everything i have which is why ive never done it.

i like discogs a lot though. whenever i find a new album that id like to own, i always use it to see if there is a US pressing thats in my price range. that usually tells me how much of a chance i have running into it in a store and what i can expect to pay. typically ill expect the store to be selling records $5-10 more than discogs because i know they have to make money and most of the time im fine with that. i do think its a bit tacky when people whip out their phones while theyre digging to compare prices and i know a lot of store owners really hate that.

Yeah it's a pretty tedious trying to log it all, I'm going to try to get all mine up but I'm sure I'll end up just doing the ones that at least somewhat interesting. I'm not dying to get my "Best of Kenny Rogers" up there.
The Discogs dudes in record stores though do drive me crazy, it's primary use for me is just going to be cataloging my want-list. I have seen guys in stores pass over a record they wanted because Discogs has it for $8 less.

I get most of my records on Discogs, easier to find the ones i want there.
Usually i buy records for around $400-500 a month there, i also buy some at the stores around town, when they have anything i want.
I love Discogs, my wife doesn't

Here is my account, been working on logging everything on there, not even halfway done.

I got a discogs a few years ago, have a fraction of my collection up on there, but as stated by others, I can't take the time to put everything I own on there.

Discogs is an invaluable site.. whether it's for buying records or just trying to find out who released what.

I also love the fact people list the condition of the sleeve/condition of the record separate.  I've managed to get some pretty rare 70's punk and 60's garage records for a decent price due to having beat covers (collectors care about things like that, i do not).

One of these days I'll try to catalogue everything... i have a buddy who put his up on there and it's overall worth was somewhere around 10 grand.

daily wantlist email right before bed or on the pooper in the morning is one of my favorite parts of the day

i don't catalog my collection, use it to buy and sell, coupled with paypal credit it can be a dangerous game

Back when I actually made decent money and after I quite drinking/smoking, I was spending a couple hundred a week, easilly. Basically just switched addictions. I haven't spent that on records this entire year so far since I'm fucking destitute. Never tried to post my collection on there because it would take forever. I've also been selling stuff both for fat trimming/supplemental income purposes, luckily I've gotten rid of most of it, all that's left is Metalcore reissues (Botch, Cave-In, Converge) and a couple of randoms.

I buy and sell record collections and dj for a living, so i use discogs on the daily to check record prices/pressings, etc. Ocassionally shop there for myself, but i tend to hold off and hope to stumble upon items in my wantlist in person.  Always been a lazy dude, so never got to upload my collection on there, but here's the set up. A little bit of everything in there, lots of 45s.

Actually, here it is. This is merely a portion of what I have, but I am stoked on the original, sealed, VILE SOLUTION record I own. This past October, I sold the other sealed copy I had to an older guy that really wanted it. 300.00 and a vegetarian cheesesteak is how he paid me.

i've worked many a record store job
+
djed many a dive bar as well. good to see another fellow record hustler. this looked a lot like my bedroom before i sold about 90% of my collection and moved to california. where do you live? are the thrift stores rife with good stuff? i spy black saint + sinner..my fav jazz bassist

i have a discogs here but it's not even close to fully updated, and sadly looking rather sparse after the great move purge

I still have a small stack of recent purchases I haven't put in but here's my lil collection:

https://www.discogs.com/user/joke_eggy/collection

it's fun getting back into records, and having a place to keep track of stuff is cool. Plus I've found a bunch of old hardcore 7"s that I used to own but my sister gave away  ::) and they're really cheap so I've been getting some of those back

Stoked on this thread. First time this comes up in conversation with any skaters. I don't buy a lot from Discogs but I've gotten lucky before on there. Mostly good experiences. Most of my buys are from digging through my travels, at my local (Discordia Records, my friend/owner has a great selection), and of course, Ebay. I haven't uploaded much but usually what's from the top of my head. I happen to recently have counted all my records, about six months ago, it was somewhere around 1,300. Maybe about 1350 now.

Here's the little I have on Discogs. https://www.discogs.com/user/gbyfromthecc/collection

Absolutely terrible design flaws, but the vast majority of releases that I'm after are entirely dependent upon Discogs' wantlist feature, and the site is a friggin' excellent database.

I'm mostly collecting stuff in the realm of experimental/noise/sound art/whatever these days, *almost* exclusively tapes.

Mostly 90s rap with some hardcore sprinkled in. I once digitized my collection and registered everything in discogs at the same time but  I only discovered discogs when I was at the letter D so the letters A to C incl. my Cypress Hill collection are missing…
