I really enjoyed this episode and the series so far. I do wish the episodes were longer. More time talking about Gummo and Harold would have been great.
-
the coolest dude
-
i found his speech about zines being equal to movies vindicating.
dude kinda rules and doesn't seem to take anything too serious.
wonder if he still 'skate' skates?
him and that silly neighbor seem to have fun.
'culture is up for grabs' i like that line. we're the melting pot and appropriation is bullshit. if something is rad then grab it.
thanks for posting ... and fongstarr
-
Damn O'Dell knocked it out of the park with this entire series. Great finale.
I know the Chief mentioned they were (possibly) doing an episode on him so fingers crossed for a second season.
-
So good. One of the best examples that skating is a lifestyle, and you don't have to be good on a skateboard to be one of the best in skateboarding.

this is cool too. i havent listened to it in a while, but i think he talks about david blane, trying to get beat up on film, and other neat things.
edit: ah shit. its weird. i just copy pasted from youtube to embed but still got this horseshit.
-
Now I'm trying to picture the film with Quim playing Telly instead of Leo...
-
Another good episode. I'm glad they spent a decent amount of time on Kids, but than again, of course they had to dig deep into that. It's the main reason he is associated with skate culture. Him and his neighbor are legit.

Larry Clark did a great job being the stereotypical kid creeper
-
I am a fan of O'Dell and Epicly Later'd, but this Vice series has been quite underwhelming.
Bam? Roy? Harmony $@#%ing Korine?
Give me Natas, Thiebaud, Rocco or almost anyone in skating besides those three.
-
Liked Kids and Bully but I wouldn't back Larry Clark too loudly.
When your life's work is about underage sexuality, not just a piece or two, then I have to wonder. Ed Templeton would be a better artist without so much of his influence.

I don't want to spoil anything for people who haven't watched Bully, but the "climax" to that film is still one of the gnarliest fucking things I've ever seen. It still haunts me to this day, and it was probably 8 years ago when I watched it. Sheesh!
-
Can I please punch Aaron Rose in the face? Pretty please?
Harmony needs a punch too.

Chloe Sevigny looks fucking beat :-[

anyone seen larry's the smell of us? any good?

I guess I am going to have to give Bully a watch. I assume Wassup Rockers isn't worth the time?

^^ Ken park is gnarly too
-
wouldve been good to hear his take on his letterman appearance

bully still haunts me too. made me never want to go to florida!

bully gives me anxiety. if you've ever been involved in violence and can see how it easily can go too far and you can alter your life's trajectory to one of suffering.
i mean, even if you're not the main aggressor if ya'll get on that group mentality and you put hands on someone and your man puts the boots to em or god forbid weaponry? life sentence!
just the whole talking it up beforehand and all that was realistic and how they thought they were bad ass and did in fact commit a piece of heavy violence but they're not made for that life.
shit hit close to home.
bobby kent had it coming though, should've mitigated their sentence.

I always felt that Gummo was heavily influenced by Memory Screen, cool to hear about it.

Loved the series, each episode has its own story and style. Still, the Heath episode is by far my favorite one and really impacted me the most.

Am I wrong though?
-
she's 42 or whatever so i mean, if you're expecting jenny, sure. i think she looks dope and via loyalty i would prolly say that even if it wasn't true. but it is. she's still dope.
wish they would've got rosario on there too. just to look at, i don't think she was part of the skater crew so much as someone larry clark picked out w/ his discerning eye.
-
she was never conventionally attractive really just has that relatable 90s norm core kinda cute vibe MIA 40 plus and still crushes it
-
I never said it was a bad thing either, but she looked really just burned out. I'm glad she has chosen to keep herself natural, nothing that shows sign of plastic surgery or what have you to my novice eye, not too many women with the money she has would go that route.
-
Not surprised at all that they didn't mention the Letterman thing.
But I am surprised that they didn't even show a short clip of the Mark Gonzales chair wrestling scene from Gummo. I mean, that's classic movie magic right there.

part about memory screen was really sick
more reason there needs to be an AWS episode
-
Aaron Rose has been wearing that fedora for 15 years. Time to retire that shit bro. It's holding you back.
-
I reluctantly watched it cuz I see the whole series. It was alright. I thought he was way into violence, like it's almost his kink. The kids part was interesting. Kinda want to watch it now. Overall this season was really good. Wish list for next season is Tom Penny and Suicu.
-
I wonder if the EMB girl Harmony talks about is the same one from Mike Carroll's Epicly Later'd.

There was a group of directors in the late 90s like Clarke, Korine, Solondz and some who had shorter careers that seemed like they loved having poor southerners do fucked up things or get overly sexualized that just seemed like shock for shock’s sake. Berra’s 7teen Sips seemed like he was trying to go for that pseudo intellectual take on it. Recently, Sean Baker (tangerine, a Florida project) has picked up the mantle and perfected it by removing the exploitative and somewhat condescending vibe of the former
-
gummo is great though and i will debate anyone saying it's "shock for shock's sake".

what’s funny is I loved Kids when it came out, it felt like seeing a wilder, american version of my friends on the big screen. But I’d hate it if I rewatched it now….It was the same with that Belgian movie, Man bites Dog. Even Chloe Sevigny seems to have that same reaction. "watching as an adult"...
Shit maybe I’d love Spring Breakers if was 18 right now ? I fucking hated that movie.
But all in all I’m just glad EL is still going !

Do a Harold Hunter ep and have Harmony as an aside, not the other way around!
-
I remember going to see Kids when I was in Uni. I was 18 and
it felt really try hard, totally unnatural and really badly acted.
Is that an accurate portrayal of the NYC skate scene in the mid 90's?
So glad Quim was not Telly.

I thought spring breakers was great. When i saw it I was just coming out of my shitty late teen/early 20s party phase and the movie is pretty much a satire on that young naive lifestyle. The opening scene alone is gold.

I thought this was interesting but weird, not as much focused on skating as before in the series. still enjoyed the whole season, hopefully some good guests on the next one. He must be joking that some one pays hundreds of thousands of dollars for his art.

Gonz does not like Patrick O'Dell

How crazy is that? Wonder what the beef with O'Dell is. Seems personal.

explains there was no Gonz interview in the Spike episode

I love it
-
Wonder if it's because he wasn't approached by Patrick? He doesn't seem to have a reason to dislike him. Funniest part though, "He tends to blink, blocking one eye, maybe it's a mason's thing"
Serious though what's the beef
-
But does Harmony like violence?

She looks really good for 42 years old.
This was probably my favourite episode, learned a lot I didn't know. Quite a mansion he has. And Lefty is a great name for a daughter.

yeah its weird. o'dell does not seem like someone who would offend anyone. at the first sign of conflict, he's showing his belly

weird how in that video Gonz claims to not know who Patrick even is / is responsible for the show, even tho those two definitely know each other.
In addition to to shooting an ad or two of Gonz in the mid 2000s, one of Patrick's earliest Laterd episodes included a Gonz/Hosoi piece. They even ran in the same friend circles back back in NYC - Gonz would show up semi regularly on Pat's old photo blog site.
-
Gonz’s art is lazy and celebrity driven. There, I said it.
-
I always thought Clark was very judgmental and Harmony was the opposite. Felt like Clark really 'enjoyed' punishing the kids in Kids and Bully. Kind of a "look at what these jackass kids do to themselves" thing. He even played Leo Fitzpatrick's dad in Bully and condemns him and the others in the end. Ken Park was more positive with the kids' threesome being truer than their relationships with the adults. Haven't seen his more recent ones but I've been told I'd like them.
Harmony seems like the most empathetic guy. I didn't see Spring Breakers as a satire; I thought of it and Gummo as two sides of the same coin: appreciations of both the dirtiest and poorest worlds/works of culture, and the most mainstream and 'normal.' I know he actually does like all the music in Spring Breakers.

I remember on the Epicly Later'd blog, probably like fourteen years ago, there was a photo of a drunk Mark Gonzales (possibly at Max Fish?), with a caption where Odell was saying he was being obnoxious.
-
For some reason a Gonz/O'Dell beef really bums me out.
Wish I never saw that Gonz video posted on the previous page.
-
i'm intrigued. does anyone think gonz was just playing a joke? obviously he knows who odell is and he didn't shit talk his work on EL.
iceman or any new yorkers shine any light?
-
Is Gonz so respected that nobody respects his opinion?
Does O'Dell have a secret toolbox full of screwdrivers that we don't know about?
Is fat bill lurking this board right now and checking in to see whether anybody is talking about him?

I really dug the episode, tbh I never heard about him prior to this. He comes off as being a megalomanian person, but it worked out for the better for him I guess. People saying this doesn't have to do with skating are wrong I think, his whole history of skating obviously influenced the way he looks at thinks and explains why he comes off as being a child which I don't mean in a bad way.
Anyway thanks o'Dell I really liked this season!
-
I loved the series overall but honestly didn't like this episode. The reason the Spike episode worked for me is because they had anecdotes from people "in the industry" that let me learn about skateboard history and his place in it. This one I barely knew who most of the people they were interviewing were and i feel like they missed a great opportunity for some Harold Hunter stories other than something along the lines of he was crazy like the rest of us, but the lifestyle killed him... Kind of struck a nerve the way they put it, but I'm probably just a stupid schmuck.
-
I can definately see how they wouldnt get on - O'dell seems respectful and thoughtful - Gonz just doesn't let up - its tiring just listening to him babble on until he hits something of interest - its like that monkeys with type writers and shakespeare anecdote - YES! if you don't stop talking the law of averages says at some point you will either say something funny or interesting.
