Whats with leaking?
« on: February 23, 2007, 05:33:10 AM »
I have never downloaded a leaked album, and I usually try to buy the album, instead of downloading it. I have nothing against downloading music, since it lets more people listen to the music. I always like to get a cd though, and check out the art, and then put the disk in and listen to it.

One thing I don't understand it leaking. It's so unfair, for the buyers, who have been waiting ages to get the cd, only to find out a bunch of people have already listened to it because it leaked.

How do albums leak anyways? Do they do it on purpose? If not, why can't they prevent it?

And where can you download leaked albums? Soul seek? Lime wire? Are they good quality?

I don't know much about leaking, so if any of you could explain some of it, it would be appriciated.

Thanks.

i understand your wanting to hold an actual cd in your hands, but usually when an album is leaked, its months before the actual release. as for being bummed that other people heard it, i don't see where you're coming from (unless you have to be the first to do whatever you do). if i download a leak, its because i was waiting forever for it and can finally LISTEN to it.

albums are almost never leaked on purpose by the artist. they can't prevent it because they don't know who had access to the unmastered album and decided to share it. plus, once an album is leaked, it's gonna spread like wildfire.

to find leaks, try soulseek and limewire, but also try torrents. i always go to a message board about the band and search to see if theres a link to a torrent.

are you interested in anything specifically?

Thanks for the nice answer man.

The reason I get bummed is because, for example I've been waiting for an album for so long, and I've seen the cd cover and all, and I'm so exited about going to the cd shop and getting it. But then you find out one week before you're going to get it, that its already on the internet.  And even worse, you have to decide if you're going to download it, and then buy the album, losing all the fun in buying the album except for the art work. Plus, you might download a version with crappy sound, and then you'll already know the tracks when you buy the album.

I like to listen to the tracks for the first time in good quality.

I probably think about it too much.

I'm interested in modest mouse, arcade fire (its not out here yet), and some others. I use a mac, so I don't know if some programs would work.

i don't see what your problem is here, no one's forcing you to download leaks. it's all about self-control. and what's the big issue with knowing other people have heard an album before you? even before the internet people like critics have had copies of albums before they're out?

as for how albums leak, it is usually done from the promo copies that are sent to critics. they usually have them a month or two before the release date, and they can easily upload an album onto the internet if they want to.

Well I guess I don't like the fact that I could just go on the internet and listen to the whole thing, when I was planning on buying the cd. After its leaked, you still want the cd, but you can get it for free, plus way earlier than expected. Its like there is no use in buying the actual cd any more.

Maybe I should be mad at the late release dates. You always hear about the artists that are already done miixing and all, and then the release dates are like 3 months after.

What are some good places to get leaks? Is it possible to dowload full albums with lime wire? Or should I go search for torrents?

thanks

leaks of basically any album, especially the stuff you say you're after like the arcade fire or modest mouse, are extremely easy to find on messageboards. people upload new albums constantly on them. soulseek is a good option as well, at least with leaks that are maybe a week or two old. your best option is to get an invite onto a torrent site like indietorrents, where leaked albums first appear before anywhere else. they're the most convinient/easy.

also, don't ever use limewire for music. awful selection, filled with crap and bad quality files.

I used Azureus. I downloaded the new modest mouse so I'm pretty happy.

I'm going to try to find a bunch of stuff that I can't find at the cd shop in my town.

Thanks guys!
