Humboldt County
« on: May 15, 2019, 09:16:42 PM »
I've got a perspective job offer in Eureka and driving up in a couple of weeks to just get a feel for the area.  I haven't been up there in almost 20 years, and I was too young to really have an opinion about the place. Thoughts on living there? From what I've been reading online, it seems kind of fucked up. I'd be coming from the Bay Area and taking a hefty paycut, but the cost of living seems worth it. I'm not really worried about a scene, I'm married and have kids. Thanks.

Theres an ok park, very mellow slow paced vibe in town. Winco is home, coffee shops are fronts, and it's not that bad. Really good nature hikes and outdoorsy shit there too. My sister went to HSU and dug life out there for the most part.

Damn I left my bubbler at my parents house

Humboldts pretty sketchy, lots of transients and tweakers looking to take advantage of decent people. Eureka is definitely a sketch city. I spent alot of time in Arcata and i always thought it was pretty meh. I’ve only lived in pretty small towns with pretty much nothing to skate, but trust me there’s absolutely nothing worth skating there. Rains a shit load and gets pretty cold. There’s cool nature stuff for sure but there are way better places imo. Cost of living is more expensive than you’d think because of growers, and you are straight up stuck in humboldt with no access to decent health care. Humboldt just wasn’t for me. I say go to the interview, but dont count on Eureka to be the promised land.

I would recommend living in Arcata and NOT living in Eureka if you can avoid it. it has the highest property crime rate in CA and you'll interact with insane tweakers on a daily basis if you live there. Eureka actually has a good park and quite a few spots though, and Arcata is only a 10 minute drive away. Arcata is really mellow and you can find cheap rent for being a college town, it doesn't rain as much as you would think, and is surrounded by redwood forest and plenty of beaches.

Allen.

I’ve spent pretty much every summer there for the last 6 or 7 years. It’s great when you’re on vacation and are able to go chill on the beach or hike. The skate scene is pretty cool, the Eureka Park is nice but there are basically no spots (maybe you’re not interested in that anyway). My view on it though is that unless you’re retiring, it would be pretty easy to lose your mind as a young-ish person living indefinitely there. There’s really not much to do. Even I would get incredibly bored after a couple of months. I would see how you like it but don’t sign any long-term contract

lived here my hole life. Here's a full length I filmed primarily in Humboldt that came out last december. Arcparktilldark is the after work chill sesh every day. come by and drink beer. The skate scene here is probably way bigger than you would expect.

Cutten/Myrtletown/Pine Hill are all pretty chill suberbs of Eureka to live in. A house will be more expensive  to rent/buy in Arcata than Eureka because of the college. Compared to the bay area though Arcata prices might not be too bad. Arcata/Mckinleyville are definitely less tweakery areas than the grid of Eureka, but there are areas of eureka that arent bad at all.

 good luck.

As long as you arent a dumb innocent college kid with money or an idiot who leaves valuables out in plain sight the tweakers are easily avoidble. theres also not as much poop on the ground as the bay area. and yes we are in california and dont have the cali tables or perfect 20 stair rails or the berrics. There is some pretty sick crusty street shit, a rad diy scene, a secret combi sized vert bowl deep in the woods, tons of nature, an epic river scene, rad art/music scene, breweries  etc.

humboldt gets a bad rap, and its usually from peoples shitty experiences working on the hill or something.  like anywhere it has its positives and negatives, but its not as bad as outsiders make it seem.

oh and "Murder Mountain" was made for TV so don't base any judgements on that.

I’ve spent my whole life in Nor Cal and more time in the streets than at parks, im into crust.  I hate what the bay area has become and but theres really only ground poop in SF :) I’m just telling him the facts that if you want to raise a family there, you’re gonna have to deal with some sketchy tweaker/grower/trimmigrant related shit. I know a ton of girls that have gotten roofied at TJ’s. I skated there a bunch and had fun but after 10-15 times would get bored pretty quickly pushing around arcata and never really found anything worth coming back to in my eyes in Eureka. Skating the indoor park never seemed worth the price and having to wear a helmet. Ampt was over-priced too and had a pretty small selection. Im not into reggae so i never vibed with the music scene, dont drink anymore, and the weed is over rated. Girls need more sun for proper outdoor.

I watched your whole video and it was honestly pretty cool. I recognized or skated about 20% of the spots and i’ve skated arcata park 25+ times. I always liked the steep banks behind the gym. Some of you guys really tear the park up and do some impressive shit. That kick flip over the pyramid is fucked. That Robby guy stood out to me, he did an insane blizzard flip on the hip one time when i was there.

Like i said, i can see the appeal but it wasn’t for me.

Thankssss..... but even still most peoples judgements are of the obvious shit that are foreign to people who aren't from here like most of the shit you just said again. A TON of girls? TJ'S? no shit... thats where you go to get roofied. TJ's and Sidelines are now being forced to close down and the buildings are being stripped of alcohol permits permanently due to a long term drug scandal. Trimmigrants are a thing i guess, but reallty they only hang out at the plaza and really are only in town in beginning of the season and random weekends. Plazoids are a thing too but you get people like that anywhere. Theres a lot of other rad music scenes here besides reggae. You dont have to wear a helmet at the indoor park anymore, but it still is a terrible design. Ampt just got new ownership by a local legend and is full to the brim with product, and their prices are all suggested retail prices and they kick down hekka deals if youre a loc. and you're right weed is over rated. i skated arcata park 25+ time last week.

But behind all peoples first judgements of the obvious shit are a bunch of normal ass people and familys that have normal ass jobs and live normal ass lives. Yah maybe its not booming land of opportunity but theres definitely tons of shittier places to live, especially in california.

we also have the cleanest tap water in the state and fresh airrrr.

Arcata and mckinlyville and Trinidad are very nice places. My sister in law is not the type of person you think would like it there (kind of a normie square) but she thrives with all the hiking, beaches, and good fresh food.

What’s the field you’re looking into?

Eureka/Arcata are great for everything you want when getting away from the bigger cities. I moved up to Humboldt from East LA about two years ago and it’s been a good run. Use SLAP as a resource if you pull the trigger on it and get some finer tuned details via the PM option on here.

Killer vid! I moved away temporarily about a month ago and I really miss Eureka, I can't wait to get back.

Are those ledges at Arcata High? The ones where the guy in shorts shoots the 3?

I wish I was a rail guy, there are rails galore in Eureka but I can't get broke off anymore. That bike path behind the mall is perfect for flat.
